Dear Readers,

T

his month’s edition of Panache magazine is show-casing London fashion week, along with all our great regular features. However, looking at events happening across the World; such as Gaza and those in Ferguson Missouri, I feel the need to comment. It seems to me that those without money are without power and those without power are essential disenfranchised. My solution; I would like to see the black community spending within its own community and by so doing, using its combined buying power to achieve economic freedom. The idea is so simple! Everyone’s doing it! Apart, that is, the black community in the UK! The idea is so simple and

logical it seems condescending to think of having to articulate it to anyone; least of all to those it may concern. We need to spend our money within our own communities! It’s as simple as that. If we spend our money within our community that money gives a small business; a start-up, or a community project the same chance of success as its competitors in other sectors of the population. Whenever I speak about this subject I distinguish Africans and Afro Caribbean’s from the minority ethnic population as a whole. That is because all other groups, within the BME umbrella, apart from those mentioned, are spending within their communities and are buying from their own people and therefore, are doing well in terms of their relative economic strength.

Everyone agrees with the diagnosis of the illness and also with the prognosis. But even though the treatment seems easily accessible and available; no one wants to be the first to take it. Why?

JOIN US:

Why do black business owners shy away from doing business with each other? Why are afro Caribbean’s especially averse to spending with black businesses? The answers to those two questions are many and go back a long way, depending on how deeply you delve. Some people believe that we were indoctrinated, through slavery, to mistrust each other and that mistrust of each other now makes up part our psyche. Be that as it may, I would suggest that now is the time we all adopt the pragmatic approach! Let’s make ourselves aware of the situation we are in and deal with it! very year we are floored by gorgeous ready-to-wear designer collections and bombarded with images of slender models wearing these apparels, but the reality of the fact is we women have different body shapes and not everyone falls into the size zero - four category. That then leaves us with this question, “What options are there for the women who are more fuller in certain areas, whether it be breast, hips, butt or thighs?” No longer shall we just sit and mutter among ourselves, we must do something, just as the popular quotes says “Be the change you want to see”. Change here in the Caribbean has been long in coming and it is high time that we see edgy designs that flatter our various shapes, coming down runways. Truth is, on the international stage, plussize fashion has already taken off with the introduction of FullFigure Fashion Week, model agencies like Wilhelmina and with designers such as Jean-Paul Gaultier and John Galliano who used plus-size models in their collections. However, in the Caribbean change has taken a bit little longer to take full flight, as both our eyes and minds have grown accustom to one standard type of body shape on the fashion scene. Over the past two years in Barbados, many plussize women came forward interested in fashion arena but it was always limiting due to their size and lack of agencies and designers catering for these shapely women. Nonetheless, change has been taking shape and the impact of plussize modelling has been slowly increasing. One of the agencies leading the forefront for plus-size models in Barbados is the Curvy Revolution Model Agency, with plus-size model and reigning Miss Plus Barbados Alicia Clarke as CEO and founder, Hugh Williams as Creative Director and Troy Arthur-Shaw as manager. From its conception the Curvy Revolution Model Agency has executed various fashion shows like Fashion Fusion and Elements just to name a few, showing shapely women that they can be fashionable and fabulous. At the Elements Fashion Show, it had an all-exclusive designer line up featuring Exquisite Designs by Lisa Badenock-Hill, Legende by Kofi Branch, Niachris by Christina Adams and Olivia Michella by Marvo White-Jessamy. The Curvy Revolution models have also been featured in an edition of the Stoma Swimwear Fashion Catalogue which is based in Scotland Great Britain. As named above designer Lisa Badenock-Hill is the CEO of Exquisite Designs, she is playing her part on the Barbadian plus-size fashion scene with her new fashion house focused on designing and retailing lingerie, formal and bridal wear. The brand gives women of color a prestigious, state-of –the –art quality products formulated and shade selected specifically for them. Getting to know the real

CORTEZ I

am of Spanish/Asian/Mediterranean decent and raised in the Philippines before moving to and starting my big adventure in the USA at the age of 8.

Mr Richard Sumner the Company Director / Exec. Creative Director at FACEON Magazine a thoroughly dedicated professional and good friend.

My interest in the arts, modelling and media started from an early age when I appeared in a Michael Jackson Pepsi advert and from that day forward I always desired more and more and strived to go as far as my passion would take me.

I have been lucky to have worked with a wide variety of professionals in many beautiful places, England, Scotland, Wales, Spain, France, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Portugal, Holland, Ireland, Philippines, Japan, China, Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Greece, Italy (Venice, Milan & Rome) to mention but a few. To use a Gallic saying picked up on my travels these adventures given me a true “Jeu de Vivre” of life.

Over the years I appeared in a few movies and also tried to develop as a model and artist and even delved into singing to add another string to my creative bow. Working and creating five singles with the legendary LA Producer Duane “Darock” Ramos. I then spent many years working with top photographers all over the globe culminating in a calendar sold in Asia and a double page spread in the brilliant FACEON magazine in UK with a reach of over 100 countries it meant I could really get my face out there. http://www.faceonmagazine.co.uk/ This was made possible by the support I received from

One of the most rewarding parts of what I do is to work with creative people and especially up and coming designers most of which I can genuinely call my friends now such as Ana Sabino Atelier in Portugal, Mary Martin of London http://www.marymartinlondon. co/ and Michelle Herbert http://www. michellehebert.com/#fashionhome Connie Borja http://www.amourluxuryswimwear. com/ both of California.

Another person I must make special mention who has always helped and supported me especially as I tried to evolve in Europe is top UK Celebrity Hairstylist Stuart Phillips http://stuartphillips. co.uk/ someone I consider not only at the very elite of his trade but a lovely guy and great friend. I like to describe myself as the consummate professional always striving for the beautiful creation not just for myself but because I love to make people happy and smile. I love to create the perfect ambiance to catch that perfect moment in a snap shot of time. My own outlook in creating the perfect pictorial/scene, you have to have on one hand a Photographer/Director who doesn’t see the subject or scene, but feels it, creating it from their minds eye, with the very fabric of their being. Then on the other hand you have a model that trusts and respects the Photographer/Director and when she is at ease, she portrays not just with her face or her body but with her heart & soul.

As each story unfolds, so does a powerful message: “Health is not a luxury of the few, but an inalienable right for all”. By following Yvonne on this journey, film audiences will hear the voices of the marginalised women and communities empowered by hope, which may not only lift your spirits, but also raise voices against the disparities that still exist around the world. This film is a call to action for nations to honour their commitments to improve the health of all Africans, especially women and children in meeting the Health Millennium Development Goals. hen we think about Fashion, no appearance is complete without having the right hairstyle to go with that special outfit. I have been fortunate over the years to have known a very professional hairdresser by the name of Jacky Christian-Guy, who owns the Hairdressing Salon called “Another DyeMention. I used this month's issue to find out some more about this very talented businesswoman. What kind of person would you say you are? I am a happy go lucky type of person. When I wake up in the morning and at the last thing at night I pray. My whole day is governed by how I feel and I always make sure that I am a happy person. I decided to be this way when I became 40. I changed and decided to be a different person than what I used to be I was no longer going to be the person that someone else wanted me to be. I am now a very happy, joyful, bubbly and grateful type of person. Who just loves life. What was your early life like? My mother showered all five of us with love. This is why I think I have a lot of love today, because of my mother. Where my mother couldn't shield us from certain things, she protected us by telling us she loves us. I remember things like going on school trips.

56 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

My mother used to make us feel special by giving us lots of food, we didn't have the money like the other children, but we had lots of food to eat - enough to give to the other children. In that sense my childhood was lovely! When I became 16 my mum gave me the choice because I didn't do too well at school: Learn something or get out. I thought "If I get out what am I going to do? Where am I going to go? I better go and learn something". I went to West Ham College in Stratford and I saw the course about Hairdressing. I decided that's what I wanted to do. I went for the interview and came back home with the form and told my mother "I'm going to be a hairdresser" and that's what I have been doing from the age of 16. Was working for yourself your original goal? I didn't set out to work for myself, but what I can tell you is what I tell all my members of staff : Work for your boss as if it's your own business, because when you do eventually have your own goal you will be able to cope. Every salon that I have ever worked in, customers always thought I was the manager, that the salon belonged to me. No one would have known that I wasn't the boss. I didn't always realise what I was doing, but what I learned helped me to run my own

business with ease. I invested a lot of time and effort into whatever I the task and made sure I did it thoroughly and well. I copied what my managers did. God had a bigger plan. I never dreamt that I would have a hair salon. It wasn't even in my thoughts. My husband was fed up of me working for someone else and asked me what I wanted to do. He gave me a choice: Go into business and I support you or vice-versa. I chose to go into business and he supported me. He gave up work for five years and looked after the children. This worked very well. I have been working for myself for 12 years. I remember a particular incident where my husband was singing at a funeral; because of this he was unable to collect the children from school. At the time my boys were ages 5 and 7 years old. When I got to the school, I realised that I didn't know what class the children were in! My 7 year old ran to me and I thought "Brilliant!" To find the class of my 5 year old I had to play a game with my 7 year old. I pretended to race him to his brother’s class and let him win! When we got to the right class, my 5 year old ran out shouting "Mummy!" His school friend said "I didn't know you had a mummy!” I started to cry. That part of my life wasn't so good. It felt like we were one of those families with a missing parent. However it wasn't because I was neglecting my children, but I was busy building the business. I was doing everything to make sure it would stand. I remember leaving late at night sometimes and waking up early and cooking dinner in the mornings to make sure the children had dinner in the evenings. All of this was behind the scene, people didn't see that part of my life. They only saw the glamorous side of things. My husband in the 58 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

meantime was busy studying to be a teacher. Anything is possible. Especially if you have good structure and teamwork. God knew what I needed.

Jacky with supportive husband

Did you or do you still have a mentor? I didn't have a mentor as such but I had what I would call a blueprint. My blueprint was in the form of a Ghanaian woman called Fulera. I worked with her for many years - we are still in contact today. She is in her 60’s and still a hairdresser. Due to personal circumstances a couple of years ago, Fulera was unable to work. I knew that I had to help, I owed her. I worked in my own salon Thursday Friday Saturday and working in her salon, Monday Tuesday Wednesday. This was just so she could keep her salon and her clients. Fulera

Flair

taught me all that I know today, the principles of hairdressing, not how it is done today. I have taught the same to my staff. No matter what I did or said she never gave up on me. Fulera is now based in Bounds Green What has been the highlight of going into business for yourself? You can do what you want. No one to answer to. For example if I have a doctor appointment I can attend a doctor appointment without thinking that I have to get my manager's permission. I have staff working for me, which means I have given something back to society by helping others gain employment. I look at what I can give. I have some working voluntary and some doing work experience. Hairdressing is not just about hair, it's about customer service, answering phones, motivating your staff. Besides my husband is my boss too, I have to answer to him. We work together as a team. He handles all the paperwork and makes sure I do everything correctly. He doesn't allow me to be slapdash. Business-wise have you achieved your aims or your goals? I would have to say no, because we intended to have two or three salons. The hairdressing business has definitely changed. There is a lot of "cutting the corners". In general the standard in hairdressing has gone down. Some hairdressers having only trained for six months and think they know everything there is to know. This is why we have a lot of baldness because of the wrong chemicals used to straighten hair for example. They haven't had enough training, they are barely scratching the surface.

I had my training 30 years ago and it was very different back then. We had to know the different chemicals in the relaxers, we even had exams on the subject! The hairdressing industry has taken a dip, but we are still here. What do you think your future holds for you and do you still want to own more salons or do you see yourself going in another direction? I don't see myself having two or three salons, I do see myself heading in another direction. I see myself opening a Hair School. That's our plan that we have put before God. I still feel I have a lot to give. I want to bring back the "Old School". I want to teach others how to relax, perm and cut hair properly. What would be your advice for those wishing to go into business for themselves? Always have a business plan and count the cost before you go into anything. Without the business plan the business will suffer. Fulera always said her business runs her and that didn't sit right with me because that meant if anything happened to her the business would suffer. I need to be in control of my business and I tell others to do the same, set up their business so they control their business. What is your favourite saying? Just do it!

frican print, more famously known as Ankara or Ntoma has made its way into mainstream fashion. African print is the collective name given to styles and designs found across Africa ranging from; Kente (Ghana), Aso Oke (Nigeria) to ShweShwe (South Africa) and various parts of Africa. Many years ago, African print was exclusive to those of African and Caribbean descent and worn during special occasions. The outfits made from these prints were mostly sewn into elaborate and exquisite designs far from every day wear. People across Africa adorn themselves with distinct and bespoke designs for parties, weddings, funerals and various occasions.

Over the last couple of years, there has been a shift in the perception of clothing made from African print material. Designers and consumers have been making wearable pieces for day to day activities; this has led to African print clothing becoming a household name. Several young and upcoming designers 62 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

have also been seen showcasing fabulous pieces that incorporate the fabric and print. Through this trend, African print has become a common sight and thus, has solidified its place in the fashion industry.

The west has been known to periodically draw inspiration from Africa, and fashion seems to be the current inspiration. Fashion brands like Givenchy, Tory Burch, Stella McCartney, Burberry and Anna Sui have all incorporated African print in their designs. Though some may view this adoption and popularity of the African print as a fad, the impact it has on the local communities that weave some of these fabric is a positive one. The high demand means that local communities in parts of Africa will be able to sell reasonably well to meet up with the demands.

The Ascent of African Print

Overall, the acceptance of African print by young people and its feature in their daily wear is positive on a number of levels. It demonstrates an acceptance of culture and exhibits pride and patriotism. It shows that young people are willing and able to support their own, and sends the message that when we accept what is ours, others will be inspired to experience it.

8 STEPS TO LAUNCHING YOUR FASHION BRAND AND GOING GLOBAL

L

by: Bukola Dagiloke

aunching a fashion brand can be a huge undertaking and it is important to map out your journey in advance if you want to launch your brand on an international level. Here are 8 steps you need to consider when launching your fashion brand. We have teamed up with Julian Hall to guide you on your journey from fashion entrepreneur to ultrapreneur. The Ultrapreneur brand is branching out into fashion this is why we have chosen for them for this article.

1. Trade Shows and networking

Your network is key when launching a fashion brand and it is important to meet buyers, potential partners and press that can help you move your brand into new markets. Trade shows take place all year round across the globe and it is in your benefit to attend the best trades shows taking place to connect with the industry insiders that can help move your brand forward. Look out for shows during London Fashion Week!

2. Social media and community

Without a community that is invested in your brand you will struggle to push your brand out to new markets. Social media is an important tool in building a community around your brand. People that love your brand ideals and concept are willing to share and repost your brand activities to a wider audience is another important step to moving your brand into new markets.

3. Message behind your brand

66 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

Ultrapreneurship is about becoming the ultimate entrepreneur. This is about your lifestyle as well as your work ethic. Many entrepreneurs who are striving for success can

Fashion

relate to this message and will be attracted to this brand. This is the basis of a good apparel line. If you have a message behind your brand that people can identify with that fits with their lifestyle choices they are more likely to endorse your brand and identify with your brand as a fashion statement.

4. Fashion weeks and seasonal trends When building your brand it's important to consider the seasons trends and design accordingly. Being in line with trends will give you the opportunity take part in fashion weeks and launch your brand to international press and media. This is a great way to get exposure for your brand and build your profile.

5. Press and buyers

When launching your fashion brand press and buyers are the key to reaching new markets. Connecting with wholesale buyers and buyers for retail outlets and department stores along with local press and media will put you right in front of your customers and help you establish your brand in the markets that interest you.

6. Artists and celebrities

Music and fashion have gone hand in hand for many years and collaborations and celebrity endorsements go really far when trying to

break your brand into a new market. Do you know any up and coming artist or minor celebrities. Connect with them and ask them to wear your garments at events and press opportunities.

7. Selling online and in markets

Having an online shop is crucial in this day and age where people want to access diverse fashion options and have variety beyond the high street. Participating in local markets can also help you building your brand awareness and community. Using these outlets along with social media can really help you build a loyal community of shoppers who come back to shop with you on a regular basis.

8. supply and demand

When you want to enter a global market it is important that you can meet the demand of your clients and buyers. It's time to start thinking about bulk orders. Where will your garments be produced and stored? Are your methods sustainable? Can you meet the orders from your chosen retail outlets? Start planning ahead and you will be assured success.

or this month I thought I would introduce myself and tell you a little about my background and my journey to becoming a contributor for this wonderful magazine. My background is as a PA working for corporate companies and the public sector. The longest I have stayed in a job is probably around four years. I did not understand why at the time but now I know it is because of my free spirit. I like to be the master of my own destiny. Anyway, fast forward 2004 my husband and I were made redundant and we then purchased an outside catering company from a friend. We built our client base in a short time, providing lunches for corporate, local authorities and private companies. We also set up building site canteens, grabbing every opportunity by the horns. We were the first company to have static canteens on the Olympic Site. Suddenly, the recession crept up on us and when we realised what was happening along with other factors we had to make the difficult decision to fold our company. Someone once asked us “What is

your exit strategy? We stubbornly replied that we were going to make it work so we did not need an exit strategy. We were left with one contract and found a local kitchen to rent and my husband fulfilled their daily requirements. As for myself I did not know what I was going to do. I attended an open day at my local university, to this day I do not know why. I was offered an unconditional place on the Creative and Professional Writing Course that day. Where did the writing come from you may ask? I had written and dreamt about being a writer from a very young age. When I left school I continued to write short stories, poems and parts of novels but never had the confidence to send them off to anyone so I packed them away in boxes. The course was therapeutic, challenging and exciting. I am so grateful to my tutors who taught me every aspect of writing, from playwriting to writing theatre for children. I graduated in 2009 and signed up for an MA course. I decided to volunteer for a while and whilst volunteering I was offered a temporary contract as a receptionist.

Live Your Dreams! Despite having two blood disorders which cause me to have severe tiredness I do not use them as an excuse. I graduate with a Masters Degree next year. Last year, during my commute to and from work I wrote my first full length play on my phone. I believe in using non-productive time productively. With the help of some very talented, committed young people and my family and friends I was able to develop and produce my play last year to take it to final draft. We will be working on taking it to the theatre sometime in the foreseeable future. I also wrote a short play in collaboration with Theatre Royal Stratford East it was performed to a sell out audience last month. I have also had several articles published and set up writing workshops. I have given you a brief outline of my story in the hope that it will inspire you to live your dreams. Anyone can transform their life, if I can do it, so can you. Be prepared to work hard, come out of your comfort zone, and overcome obstacles. Be persistent, focussed and driven. Always stay in learning mode.

I am now a playwright, novelist, screenwriter and entrepreneur. Live your dreams and enjoy every moment!

Caribbean Property

Notarising Your Caribbean Property Documents You’ve received legal documents from your attorney in the Caribbean: The covering letter states that you must sign them in the presence of a Notary Public. Huh?

W

hether you’re selling, buying or building property in the Caribbean from abroad, there are certain legal documents that you will be required to sign as part of the process. These documents will have been prepared in the Caribbean and sent to you by your attorney for you to sign in the presence of a Notary Public.

WHAT IS A NOTARY PUBLIC?

A Notary Public is someone who is specially qualified to, amongst other duties, authenticate and certify signatures to documents that have been prepared in other jurisdictions to that in which you reside. Most of the approximate 1,000 Notaries in the UK are also solicitors. Notaries are appointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury and regulated by the Court of Faculties. They are required to adhere to the same strict rules that govern solicitors. A Notary Public 76 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

must have full insurance cover to protect his/her clients and the public, hold clients’ money separate from their own, and just like solicitors, they must renew their practicing certificates annually. Notaries are required by law to keep a record of each and every document that they notarise, in addition to which, they must have arrangements in place for their records to be passed on to another Notary in the event of their death.

THE DUTIES OF A NOTARY PUBLIC

The duties of a Notary Public are many, but for the purposes of this article we will focus on their role as it relates to dealing with property documents that have been prepared in the Caribbean. The most common property documents for which notarial services are required by UK residents are the Agreement for Sale and the Instrument of Transfer or Conveyance Deed (terminology

Living

Caribbean Property

varies depending on island). It is the role of the Notary Public to authenticate and certify your signature to these documents.

DOCUMENTS TO BE PRESENTED TO A NOTARY PUBLIC

In addition to the property documents to be signed by you, a Notary Public will also be required to verify your identification. The most commonly accepted form of ID in the UK is a passport or a photocard driving licence. Proof of address will also be required, which can be a utility bill and/or bank statement which must not be more than three months old.

FINDING A NOTARY PUBLIC

You can contact The Law Society on 020 7242 1222 for details of the nearest Notary Public to your home or place of work. It is worth noting that Caribbean High Commissioners are also permitted to notarise documents that have been prepared in their respective islands. You should make an appointment to see a Notary Public beforehand, to ensure that the person is in office when you attend with your documents to be notarised.

RETURNING YOUR NOTARISED DOCUMENTS TO THE CARIBBEAN

Once documents have been notarised, they will bear a value equivalent to at least the fees paid to the Notary Public, which will vary from one Notary to another. It is therefore recommended that you return your documents to the Caribbean via courier service, and always remember to keep copies of your notarised documents for record and future reference purposes. Body Fitness Tips by Patrick Lewis Your Fitness Guru

W

e hope last month’s health tips were helpful, so here are more health tips to help you with your exercise routine. We all want to be fit, lose weight and look good so let’s put these tips into action and look forward to being much healthier. So Go forward and be healthy:

HEALTH:

We all know at times our cloths get a little tight and we go out and buy bigger sizes, next thing we know we have gain more inches and the cycle goes on and then our doctor tells us we are obese and need to lose inches round our waist. Having extra inches round your waist can lead to all sorts of problems like diabetes and not to mention the fact that you can’t get in those jeans any more.

80 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

EXERCISE:

The best way to lose those inches is to get down the gym, now; you need to use only vascular machines like exercise bike, cross trainer, tread mill and rows, we know when it comes to training and exercise we tend to want to give up, not with this training. There are no weights involved no heavy lifting what so ever. Here’s what you do, for example on Monday you get on the exercise bike set it to burn fat and go at it for thirty minutes then go on the cross trainer and set it to burn fat and again go at it for another thirty minutes, then on Tuesday you use a different machine like the tread mill and again set it to burn fat and go at it for thirty minutes, then use the rows for another thirty minutes at a steady pace, use different machines every day (alternate) for one hour a day resting for two days, you should at the end of the month see those inches round the waist come off guaranteed.

Living

Health

Lose inches in one month NUTRITION:

Ethiopian Airlines The New Spirit of Africa

I

t was in 1946, soon after the end of the Second World War that Ethiopian started giving the outstanding services to the African people for close to 70 years. It was in the spirit of pan Africanism and Ethiopian commitment to bring African nations closer to each other that Ethiopian continued serving for all of these years. Ethiopian serves 49 destinations in Africa and has the only daily and double daily east west connection in the continent. Having accomplished its goal of “Bringing Africa Together,” Ethiopian has been working to connect Africa to the rest of the world with a new motto of “The New Spirit of Africa.” Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing and most profitable airline in Africa, was ranked by IATA as the largest airline in Africa in revenue and profit in 2014. In its operations in the past close to seven decades, Ethiopian has been

a pioneer of African aviation as an aircraft technology leader providing the first jet service in the continent in 1962, and availing the first African B767 in 1984, the first African B777200LR in 2010 and the first African and second only to Japan B787 Dreamliner in 2012. Soon after the delivery of the first Dreamliner dubbed “Africa First”, true to its motto and vision, Ethiopian deployed it primarily to rotating African destinations heralding African renaissance and new spirit of the continent. By so doing Ethiopian gave precedence for African passengers to enjoy cabin features such as less noise, biggest windows in the sky, higher ceiling, higher humidity and unique lighting offered on board Ethiopian Dreamliner. Ethiopian commands the lion share of the pan-African passenger and cargo network operating the youngest and most modern fleet to more than 83 international destinations across five continents covering Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia and North America and South America. Ethiopian fleet includes ultra-modern and environmentally friendly aircraft such as the Boeing 787, Boeing 777300ER, Boeing 777-200LR, Boeing 777-200LR Freighter and Bombardier Q-400 with double cabin. umi Desalu-Vold – Among Africans excelling in the fashion and entertainment industry, the profile of former Super model, Fumi Desalu-Vold stands head and shoulders above the rest. I can recall working Fumi twice way back in 1991 where she did some modelling for me and Sheila Black for PIZZAZZ. Fumi is a former Super Model, an Actress and television host/presenter. Born in Moscow, Russia to a Nigerian father and a Gambian mother, she was raised in Scotland. Fumi was the winner of the first Super Model competition ever in West Africa in 1990 and went on to have a successful career and model for several major fashion houses and labels on the runways of Paris, Milan, London & New York. Upon her relocation from London to New York, she was accepted at the famed Actor’s Studio where none other than James Lipton declared that she was going to be a Star. Not only has Fumi found fame in Hollywood where she had parts in the popular and the number one television show at that time, Ugly Betty, she has also featured in films alongside Eddie Murphy (Norbit), Hugh Grant (American Dreamz) to name a few. Married to a Norwegian who is established in his own right, Ole Desalu-Vold who is born to a Norwegian Father and a Scottish Mother, is a former multiple national swim champion

for Norway and National Team member who has won over 200 medals. He also was team captain at the University of Iowa swim team. As a declaration of their love and honour of their different countries, when they got married, they both took each other’s last name and are fondly known as Mr & Mrs Desalu-Vold. They got married three times in three different continents, in Los Angeles, California, Lagos, Nigeria & Bergen, Norway. With her personal life blooming, she continued to have a successful acting career in Norway. She is fluent in Norwegian and has starred in national television soaps and feature films including Hotel CEASAR & VARG VEUM where she was the only actor in the film to speak three languages: English, Afrikanns and Norwegian. Just recently relocated to London, she’s has more recently starred in the American drama television show 24. How long have you been Modeling and can you recall when you started Modeling? I've been modelling professionally for 24 years. I won the Super model competition for Nigeria in 1990 & signed up with Elite model management the same year. But I started modeling at 13 when I was in high school. I was tall for my age and did a lot if school fashion shows. I was a pageant girl for many years before I focused on height fashion exclusively. http://www.imdb.com/ name/nm1962872/ Do you plan to put your fashion or beauty collection together anytime soon? of an entire make-up collection with make-up brushes, skin care (moisturizers, cleansers) and then follow it up with a range of kaftans in animal prints with a twist of Nigerian, Gambian, Norwegian & Scottish detail. How long have you been married and what is it like to be married as a working model? I've been happily married for just over five years and it's such a blessing to be married to your best friend that loves and supports you unconditionally. Being a married model is even better because my husband is also my manager and he oversees a lot of my bookings and trains me hard in the gym. He is a former multiple national swim Champion and knows what it means to be at your best to deliver peak performance. I'm blessed & a very lucky girl. http://websta.me/tag/ fumisfashionfiles What is beauty & fashion to Mr & Mrs Desalu-Vold? Beauty and fashion to us is finding balance in everything we do. To laugh, to take time off from everything, to take care of each other and ourselves, to eat right so that you're healthy. It all starts from within. If you eat well, you feel good, if u feel good, then you look good because you radiate that from within. We both love fashion but invest in timeless pieces and have fun with trends. Above all our passion for travelling the world has given us a platform to see beauty on so many different levels and appreciate it in different forms. Being open-minded for us is the most beautiful gift of all. What languages do you both speak? I speak: Russian, English, Yoruba, Wolof, Norwegian. My husband speaks: Norwegian, English, Swedish, Danish, German 92 SEPTEMBER 2014 / Visit: www.panacheoccasions.com

How do you feel working with designers around the world? Truly blessed. I'm a model, a canvas for these creative geniuses to draw upon their artistic outlets. To see myself reinvented multiple times, it's just too amazing for words. You're their muse; you're bringing their creations to life. It's a wonderful and enlightening process from conception to completion to see yourself reinvented on different platforms of beauty and culture. It's a priceless education. I feel very privileged and humbled by the designers I've worked for over the years. Were you made to feel welcomed by the Modeling world? Absolutely I was. Every new model is thought of as 'new' & 'exciting' by her agent and designers, they want to see your potential and see you grow! I lived in a model hostel in New York and the other models became friends and we had the absolute time of our lives. We were all different complexions and from different ethnic groups so there wasn't any competition which I think was smart of our agencies since we were all new and very young at the time. http://myspice.tv/qafumi-desalu-vold/ You seem to have toured, lived and modeled around the world. What country do you wish to have worked in? That's a great question. (smile). I've worked all over Europe and when I won the Modeling competition in Nigeria, I left right away to continue my career in London before I went to New York. So it would have been really great if I had worked in Lagos, Nigeria. My agent in Lagos at that time was Yemi Fawaz. (Known now as Deaconess Yemi Fawaz) she was AMAZING and really good to me. She was the BIG agent at that time scouting West

African models and working alongside Elite, Ford and Whilemina Modeling agencies in America, Milano, Paris & London. Anyway, Avon, Coca-Cola & Union Bank had gotten in touch with her to book me on their campaigns, beauty endorsements & cosmetic contracts but I had already left for London. You have to remember this was all before Social media where things might have been easier. So yes, I would love to fulfill all of those obligations and work in my home country and mentor up and coming new models. Tell us the people of Africa and around the world more about your background by the way of your mother and father supporting you being a Top Model? My father is Nigerian & my mother is from The Gambia. They met in Moscow, (Russia where I was eventually born) and the both speak fluent Russian as well as their native languages. Travelling and living in another part of the world other than the one you grew up in, opens up your mind in a way no education or classroom can give you. I say this because when I started my career; my parents were over the moon with joy that I had found my calling in life at such a young age. My father insisted that I have a university degree under my belt as a foundation for all of my other endeavors further down the line. He was right. I studied Business Administration at the University of London and that has been my foundation that has launched my other businesses. Can you explain to your many fans what the dream is for Fumi Desalu-Vold from this point on? My dream is to always be healthy and happy no matter what I do. To always be grateful for what I have and to see my brand grow with integrity and purpose, to

continue to be blessed with the ability to do what I love. www.Fumisfashionfiles.com you can follow Fumi Desalu-Vold via her different social media outlets: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/fumi.desaluvold Instagra: http://ink361.com/app/users/ig-51319459/ fumisfashionfiles/photos Twitter: https://twitter.com/FuMiDesaluVold Blog: www.Fumisfashionfiles.com YouTube: Fumi Fashion and Beauty http://www.bing.com/videos/
