Cover Page Feature We took this opportunity to ask Sherika a few questions: Do you think that your choice of business has changed you for better or worse? My decision to create a business that will engage, facilitate and requires community assistance has definitely impacted how I view life. For the most part I would say it has change me for the better as I have gained a lot more understanding for different attitudes. Did you have the support of your family when you entered the Miss Jamaica UK Beauty Pageant? Yes, my entire family supported my Journey in the Miss Jamaica UK pageant. My father, sisters, friends and sponsors attended the show in London, whilst my mother, cousins and family overseas in New York, Jamaica, Germany pushed my campaign online. What do you consider are your main passions in life? A balanced lifestyle is my biggest passion and I try to achieve balance in everything I do.

Do you have any real fears in life? I do, one fear would be not making time to build a family of my own. Describe in three words what is real love to you? Real love is “showing unconditional support” If you had the chance to do things again in life what would you do differently? I would speak less and Listen More.

What would be your best choice of where to live in the world and why? I once visited the Muscat, in the Middle East and that intrigued me. Overall I would say somewhere in the countryside in England would be my choice if I thought it through. I need to travel more. What is the one thing your life experiences have taught you while working that you would like to teach to the younger generation? Be patient and concentrate on your own journey in life, never look at someone else’s pace or speed. 10

The Story of Menelik Shabazz

M

enelik Shabazz is an Award winning film director, producer, and writer – known as a key pioneer in the development of contemporary black British cinema. Born in St. John, Barbados in 1954, he has lived in the UK since the age of five. From an early age Menelik watched mobile cinema in his village in Barbados, but didn’t entertain the idea of making films until age 18. This was when he was introduced to the first portable video technology whilst studying at North London College. This revolutionary technology, the Sony port-a-pack, demystified filmmaking and made the filmmaking process accessible. Thereafter, Menelik enrolled at the London International Film School. Unfortunately, he was only able to attend for a short period, as his local Borough Council Haringey refused to give him the ‘discretionary grant’ required. However within that short period, he was able to grasp important knowledge, confidence and inspiration to move forward as a filmmaker. Menelik is best known for his acclaimed debut feature “Burning An Illusion”, which won the Grand Prix at the Amien International Film Festival in 1982. The film also won the lead actress, Cassie Macfarlane, the Evening Standard Award for ‘Promising Actress’ (1982). “Burning An Illusion” was only the second feature film by a black director produced in the UK. The

film continues to be shown today on media courses at Universities and Colleges and has become a cult classic. Menelik, along with other individuals, founded Ceddo Film Video Workshop in 1982. It was Menelik’s vision to empower black film production, training and film screenings. Funded by Channel Four and the British Film Institute, Ceddo created groundbreaking film production and community training initiatives, and hosted a number of screenings with filmmakers including Spike Lee’s “School Daze”. Despite attempts to produce further drama projects, Menelik was unable to raise funding from within the film and television industry. In frustration, he withdrew from filmmaking in 1998. Menelik then channelled his energies into publishing Black Filmmaker (BFM) magazine to assist the next generation of filmmakers. The publication was the first of its kind and was distributed in UK nationally, as well as to readers in Europe and North America. The publication lasted nine years. Soon after publishing BFM magazine Menelik founded the BFM International Film Festival in 1999. The Festival provided a significant platform for black world cinema and British talent. A foundation template for the screening of black cinema, inspiring future generations, the BFM International Film Festival became the biggest of its kind in Europe and lasted eleven years. In 2007, Menelik went to Nigeria to work with investors to produce film projects in the burgeoning industry known as Nollywood. This experience lasted only eight months but the experience and change of scenery rekindled the passion in Menelik to return to www.panacheoccasions.com

filmmaking. The digital technology experience in Nigeria offered a way back into filmmaking on his own terms.

“LOOKING FOR LOVE”

In 2008 Menelik started to film a feature length documentary project that became known as “The Story of Lover’s Rock”. It became one of the highest grossing documentaries in UK cinemas in 2011. It also won the Jury award for Best Documentary at the Trinidad International Film Festival in 2012.

Menelik’s story continues as he is currently about to release his next feature length documentary “Looking For Love”. The film is looking at black male/female relationships in the UK, and will be released in the UK on 21st August. Some of the cinemas include Tricycle in Kilburn. Fat Burning Machine Vs the Sugar Burning Machine By Tony Andrews

I

n this article I discuss the Fat Burning Machine versus the Sugar Burning Machine and what we can do to turn our bodies into burning the fuel source we most want to lose. Whether we’re embarking on that long awaited summer holiday, at home or abroad, or simply looking forward to the BBQs and the long bank holiday weekend in August, the time to enjoy, free up & unwind in the sun is here! Most people will concede that the time to get in shape for summer has passed. However, it’s not too late to shift that last, often stubborn, 10 lbs. If we can add feeling better, healthier & more energised to boot, then so much the better! But first of all, let’s cut to the chase and look about what we’re doing about that beach body. The reason why we get fat, is because we’re not burning it. Simple. Not too simple, such as the oversimplified “calories in versus calories out”. We will see that what you put in is much more closely related to what you put out, than previously thought. The body’s preferred fuel source is fat. This is true for preferred consumption (why do you think fatty foods taste so nice), storage (why do you think the body ‘converts’ sugar and muscles into fat) and usage (at rest 70% of what the body burns for fuel is fat).

16

JULY 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

Sugar is not the preferred fuel source for the body. It’s second in line to the throne, but fat is preferred. Why, because chemically it makes sense. For example, is oil a carbohydrate, protein or fat? Oil is fat.

What is our primary source of energy for electricity, vehicles and virtually everything that requires power? Oil. Why do we go to war and fight in the Middle East? Oil. Why? Because it’s a great fuel source. How many calories do protein and carbs contain? 4 calories per gram. How many calories does fat contain? 9 calories per gram. Why does fat contain more? Because it’s a great fuel source.

whether that’s dedicating oneself to a career or a business. However, giving the wonderful summer weather we’re having, I want to talk about what I’ve learned in my previous career as a fitness instructor: how to become a fat-burning machine.

Fat is your source of power if you know how to use it. However, in modern civilisation, most people’s quality of life has improved so much that we can easily acquire fat, we just don’t know how to use it properly once we get it. A bit like money really. In the West, we don’t have much problem getting money, a person on the average salary has more than £1million pass through their hands in a lifetime, it’s just that we don’t use it in the best way possible. In the same way money is power economically, fat is power metabolically.

Prior to mass-farming, food was pretty expensive. Meat and dairy products were not cheap. Poor people survived on vegetable broths, soup and fruit where they could get it. Bread was something that you had to steal if you were poor, not get two for £2 at your local supermarket. However grains, especially wheat and corn, have become the most mass produced foodstuffs in the world. Breakfast cereals, such as cornflakes and Weetabix, were originally developed for mental health patients in psychiatric wards. It was horrible food: bland, tasteless cardboard, but it was cheap. Surely mental health patients didn’t mind, after all, they were crazy. However, when the masses got hungry and food was scarce, someone came up with the great idea of pouring on top of it a newly discovered ‘wonderdrug’ that would give you a great high, a drug that millions of people would kill and die for. That drug: sugar.

As an accountant, I study money making machines, namely companies and the business models they employ. I may talk about becoming a money-making machine in a future article,

Since the industrial revolution of the 18th century, the primary food source available to human beings has been something new and revolutionary: grain. This is why it’s called the industrial, or more specifically in this case, the agricultural revolution.

Sugar is worth killing people for. So addictive and so profitable that it’s worth dangerous expeditions, capturing and enslaving nations and going to war over. Sugar is cocaine for the diet. You have to be gangster to produce sugar (even though slavery is now outlawed) www.panacheoccasions.com

JULY 2015

Living

Life

pretty much how you have to be gangster to produce narcotics. Sugar raises glucose in the blood which raises insulin. However, sugar has a much darker effect on the brain. It increases serotonin and dopamine, the same thing drugs do. Have you ever heard of a ‘sugar rush’ and a ‘sugar high’? What about the come down effect of the drug, known as a ‘sugar crash’? What about the addictive properties of a narcotic when you just need your next fix? Ever heard of a ‘sugar craving’? Yes, you might as well snort it through your nose, it’s that bad. Grains, such as wheat, corn, rice and oats, as well as potatoes, apples and grapes are all carbohydrates. They all get converted into sugar. Are they bad? Not exactly. Fruits on the whole are much better for you than almost any other carb, apart from veg, which is the best. All of the carbs just mentioned: wheat, corn, rice, oats, potatoes, apples, grapes can all have the same effects as sugar, but usually on a milder scale. Wholegrains take longer to have a hit, these complex carbs are broken down more slowly, and the effect is not as intense. However, all these carbs mentioned can be fermented to produce whiskey, vodka, brandy, cider and wine. In fact, if you add yeast to just about any carb, you can shortcut and intensify the intoxication, by turning it into alcohol. Of course this discussion would not be complete without mentioning the yeast that is added to sugar cane juice or brown sugar molasses that is distilled and converted into one of my own personal poisons: rum. Who needs illegal drugs when we have sugar and rum! Cocktails anyone? A week ago, I was invited to drinks with a 18

JULY 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

client who I had helped deliver their first financial results after listing on a major stock exchange. I decided to be sensible and stick to one drink. I will sip on mojitos. Over the course of the evening I had sipped on 10 mojitos, from late afternoon to the early hours of the next morning. That was 2 litres of the rum and mint beverage with 250g (a quarter of a bag/an entire glass full) of sugar. Suffice to say a week later my head is still bad, not recommended! So what does all this have to with being a fat burning versus sugar burning machine? Well, it is very possible for your body to metabolise or ‘burn’ sugar. Your brain loves it, it will make you feel high. Is it good for you? Socially and recreationally you’ll feel great for a while. But no, not physically. Sugar is empty calories. Like virtually all other drugs, it has no nutritional benefit and provides a psychological hit, but very little else. You can turn your body into a sugar burning machine by consuming sugar and its complex cousin: starch. But by doing so, you’re not burning fat. Every time you consume carbs (sugars and starches) you’re giving fat burning a back seat. Does that mean you should never touch carbs? No. I’m not saying abandon carbs altogether. I recently had my birthday cake and I ate it. In the same way, I can enjoy a sugar filled drink now and again. But these occasions are rare (once every 365 days would be ideal, but I’m happy with about once per month). For milder carbs such as rice or pasta, or even the occasional pizza, once per week I find is fine: this is what most people call their ‘cheat day’ or ‘day of rest’ from willpower and self-control. However, that doesn’t mean you have to go crazy (save

Living

Life

that for once per year!). Part of the game is actually enjoying what you do, and what you eat, on your regular days, the days you don’t cheat. Often, I don’t even cheat on ‘cheat day’ simply because I don’t want to. If you find happiness, in your relationship, with the food you already eat, why would you want to stray elsewhere? I’m in love with meat, fat, veg and protein. It’s a nutritional fact that the body can survive 100% without any carbohydrates at all. For example from the Alaskan Eskimos to the East African Masai, many ancient and existing tribes from all over the world survive happily, and in tune with nature, with virtually no carbohydrates at all, a predominately protein and fat diet. And it’s proven to be very healthy. The common ailments we suffer in the West are virtually unheard of: diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, cancer. Many people are switching to a diet that reduces the carbs that were only introduced to our diet when mass production and factory farming became more and more common. By going back to the natural way, we are seeing not only the loss of fat, but the increase of health, vitally and energy on almost every measure. One of the biggest mistakes we make to our diet is to reduce fat. How are you going to become a fat-burning machine, if you don’t consume the fuel that you wish to get efficient at burning? Low fat food means low-burn food when it comes to the fat in our bodies. When it comes to calories, it’s not just how much you eat and burn, but what you eat and burn. You can’t consume high-carbs (even wholegrain and fruit) and then neglect fat (by only consuming low-fat food) and expect to become a lean-mean fat-burning machine. 20

JULY 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

Wholegrains and fruits are the very best and healthiest carbs you can eat. But they’re still carbs and we still eat too much of them. I’m not saying never to have these great foods, I’m just saying that your body is used to being a sugar-burning machine and that to burn fat, you have to change your chemistry, that is change fuel. Your body will adapt, you’ll feel fuller on less. Cutting fat makes you hungry. But cutting carbs and replacing it with veg and protein will make you feel full for longer. My Mistake and My Breakthrough One big mistake that I made was to drop carbs, seek lean meats and stuff my face with veg. I hated it. Dry chicken breast and extra lean beef everyday was horrible. And I could not stand the vinegar that was the only salad dressing permitted. I was miserable, and miserable people do not keep their weight off. Dieting does not have to be painful. It doesn’t have to be a sacrifice. What you eat should energise you and make you feel strong. You want to love what you eat and find it totally delicious and fulfilling and I have found that, without eating junk. My secret: fat! When I eat chicken now, I don’t worry about darker fatty pieces, that is, the leg and wings. I eat these first and eat the lean breast last. When I do eat dry chicken breast, I douse it with generous helpings of tasty full fat chicken gravy. When I eat my salad, I drizzle it with creamy cheesy full fat Caesar salad dressing. You may think that all that fat sent my calories through the roof! I was generous with my helpings, but when I carefully measured how much I was taking, I was surprised to find that my overall calories for the meal was well under all expectations. Why? The mountain of salad was virtually no calories and full of energy

giving nutrition. It was delicious because it was flavoured with a serotonin boosting fat: oil. However, unlike the sugar that gave you a rush on your breakfast cereal, the fat contains many nutritional benefits. The biggest benefit to come from fat is the effect it has on your hormones. Your sex hormones (oestrogen, testosterone) and human growth hormones (somatotropin) are made, stored work alongside your fat cells with the glands of your endocrine system. Just like sugar, happy hormones (endorphins, serotonin, dopamine) are released when fat is consumed, but fat has a much better nutritional benefit on the body, especially when sugar is removed. The reason why people get fat, is not because they eat fat. If you ate fat alone, it would be used for energy. The reason why people get fat, is because they eat sugar and starches. The carbs must be utilised because they are more toxic in the blood and body than fat. Fat can be stored within the body in large amounts (ask any obese person). This makes reasonable amounts of fat safe for storage. Not so with sugar. If sugar is not used, detoxified or otherwise removed from the body, big problems occur. Insulin is the body’s way of dealing with too much sugar. When the body gets overloaded with sugar too often, Type II diabetes occurs. Diabetes is worse than just being overweight. Sugar is worse than fat. Diabetes is a blood sugar problem, not a body fat problem. Now, there are problems with too much body fat: pressure on the heart, clogged up veins and arteries, and the fact is, being overweight (too much fat) is often linked with diabetes (problems with detoxifying sugar). However, when sugar is drastically reduced (virtually all carbs) from the body, it gives

fat a chance to ‘breathe’ that is, fat can be oxidised: used for fuel. Fat should not be avoided. Here’s the irony: people on high-fat, full-fat diets, with virtually no carbs, eat less (consume less calories), lose weight (less fat, more protein, more muscle especially with exercise and resistance training even in low amounts), increase in health and vitality and feel much better than they have done in a long time. I can attest to this. By eating mostly fat and protein, the weight has dropped off, I feel full (never hungry) and I have a lot more energy and stamina. So if you’re looking to lose a few pounds over the coming summer weeks, try cutting the metabolic cocaine that is carbohydrates. Add them back slowly and sparingly, just for fun, once you’ve reached your desired weight. Carbs are the parents of alcohol, and just like their children, should be enjoyed moderately. 6 Forces to battle for a successful redundancy transition (1/6) By Jenni Williams

B

eing made redundant is a challenging life event that many of us will face during the course of our working lives. It is a disruptive occurrence that can hit you like a tsunami and send your emotions into wavelike overdrive. You may find your feelings tossed around as you experience shock, denial, anger, depression and detachment, bargaining, grief and acceptance in various combinations and measures. Managing and working through your feelings is one thing, but what about the external challenges that are also lurking? A handy tool which could help you as you redesign your future is a PESTLE analysis. Each letter stands for a specific element, and together the six elements form a framework to audit the external environmental challenges. Each element could be seen as either an opportunity or a threat depending on your options for moving forward. The results of the analysis should be taken into account as you plan your future career route. Throughout this series of six blogs, we will briefly touch on the impact each element can have on the direction you plan to take. This may be a tricky undertaking since all the elements link together to a certain degree. The first letter P, refers to the political environment and the government’s influence on the economy. As you are aware interest rates are still at an all-time low, this means that the incentive to save has not been as attractive as it was in the past.

26

JULY 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

This factor might be a key consideration in your game plan because you will need to decide what to do with for instance your redundancy payment, especially if you received a decent sum of money. Interest rates could impact your thinking about whether you wish to save some or all of it, and what type of savings vehicle would work best for you. Then there’s your pension. Recent political interventions have made it easier than ever to first of all regularly save towards a pension, and secondly for those of you in the 50 plus age group, the government has recently revolutionised access to pensions, making it easier than ever to access your pension pot. Decisions about your pension could have a significant effect on how you move forward, depending on your age bracket. For the 50 plus, it could also mean the difference between early retirement versus working longer. This political move could open up more choices for those of a certain age who wish to explore career alternatives. For example someone who has been made redundant, is in the right age range, and who has a healthy pension pot, or who can top it up with their redundancy payment, may for instance, be in a position to consider further training or take a lower income while transitioning to another career; influenced by government interventions that have taken place around recent changes in the pensions landscape. Thoughts about the security of your home is often one of the first places that your mind races to when you become aware that your role is to be made redundant. Once you are on the other side – transitioning to something new, the current historically low rates of

interest will impact on how you work out what risks you are or are not prepared to take, in terms of ensuring that this key asset remains secure. Next time we will look at the second element E in terms of the impact the economy can have on your redundancy transition plan.

What steps have you taken to analyse the Political landscape as part of your plan for moving your career transition forward? http://www.jenniwilliams.co.uk/free-ebook-be-the-change-you-want-to-be/

BEAT the HEAT

By Patrick Lewis - YOUR FITNESS GURU

W

e hope last month’s health tips were helpful, so here are more health tips to help you with your exercise routine. We all want to be fit, lose weight and look good so let’s put these tips to action and look forward to being much healthier.

NUTRITION: Pure water isn’t the only defence against dehydration and hot weather - food is too! To keep cool, aim for nutritious foods with a high water content. Melon, oranges, tomatoes and celery are perfect choices to incorporate into meals and snacks in hot weather, as they are low in calories but packed full of water to keep you hydrated on the go.

So Go forward and be healthy!

HEALTH:

During summer, it can be harder to stay in good shape. The rise in heat makes working out more uncomfortable and can also increase your risk for heat stroke, a life-threatening condition caused by prolonged exposure to heat and severe dehydration. So what can you do to stay cool as the temperatures soar?

EXERCISE:

Aside from just putting a strain on your body, dehydration can also prevent you from working out at full strength. In order to properly hydrate your body you need to ensure you drink plenty of water in the hours (rather than minutes!) leading up to your workout. Keep a bottle handy and make sure that you’re taking in water at a consistent pace to help replace any lost in sweat. 30

LORRAINE CLARKE-MCGHIE SINGS THE GOOD NEWS By Coral Consciouslee

I

t is with a tender smile that I write this interview. I am writing about Gospel Singing Sensation Lorraine Clarke-McGhie who is married to a very dear friend of mine. The world is small. I begin by asking Lorraine about her origin. I was born in Camberwell, South East London. My mother was born in St Lucia and my father in Barbados - two beautiful Caribbean islands. I grew up with my mother and two brothers. As my brother’s were much older, I missed not having a sibling closer to my own age, but was grateful to be a little sister. I am a Secondary school music teacher and teach privately also From where did she get her Godly influence? My mother used to take me to church with her all the time as a child. When I once said to her that I was not going to church that was my first and last time saying so. 'Don't you ever tell me that! You are not staying at home on a Sunday morning - get your clothes on!' I decided to get ready for church because I did not want to reap the consequences of my mother’s punishment! I always saw and heard her praying, and grew up thinking that praying was the way to find answers and solutions. My mother frequently read her bible and used the word of God as an ordained minister to pray for people's healing at church. The first time I saw God as being a healer was when a lady that had trouble with her eye, come to my mother for prayer. The top half of her face

was literally black due to her eye problems. She wore large black sunglasses to cover her eyes not only as protection from the sun, but also to cover her defects. My mother put oil over her eyes whilst praying for her during a Sunday service. I was amazed that this lady walked into church the following week with her eyes completely healed. She had no need to wear sunglasses and her skin tone matched the rest of her face perfectly. From then I saw many people healed when my mother prayed. My praying mother increased my faith and belief immensely. I asked Lorraine when did her interest in singing begin? There was never a particular day but it was a gradual process. I have always enjoyed singing from being in Primary School. I can remember a friend at the age of 7 years old, who always wanted to sit next to me in assemblies to hear my singing. I have always had a loud singing voice and heads would always turn in my direction when I opened my mouth to sing. I came to the full realisation that people enjoyed my singing when frequently I was asked to sing a solo in church services as a teenager. My singing as a soloist started in church and I would like to continue singing both in and out of church. My greatest influences are Mary-Mary, Yolanda Adams, Kim Burrell and Karen ClarkSheard. I think these women are fantastic anointed vocalists who have touched and reached many lives. They sing with a wide vocal range without holding back in a great diversity of styles. They are very successful in what they do. I have never wanted to give up singing this has always been a great passion of mine. There have been times I have been

discouraged and wanted to give up recording when I saw how tough it was to get my music in the UK heard, especially after my first album in 2005. The music industry needs people to promote gospel artists here in the UK. There is so much talent here and we continue to promote those in America and overlook the great talent we have in our own land. A change needs to happen. Meeting my husband who is also my manager - Clive McGhie - gave me that extra push to move forward. I thank God for his life. I want everyone in the world to be inspired by my music. This response warms my heart. I have known Clive McGhie since he was a little boy, so it was nice to hear his wife speaking about him so honourably. How then, did they meet and eventually get married? I met Clive through a Christian online dating agency. My decision did not come easy - he would tell you I was a tough cookie. Sorry he just told me to say I was tough like leather! I always knew there was a possibility that he could have been the one from our very first conversation. I sought God's face and Godly council before making my final decision. I also wrote down many years ago what I expected in a husband - he met practically every criteria.

decisions and is good at what he does. We are still very young in our marriage but I do know that setting time for ourselves away from business is very important. Is there anything she would change if she could? I would change the lack of support that we have as UK gospel artists in Great Britain. There are too many of us that get support from elsewhere other than the UK. I close by asking what plans she has for the future? My plans for the future, is to record more of the music that myself and my husband are working on. I plan to be travelling across the world and filling up arenas with my music! Everyone keep your eyes and ears peeled... Lorraine Clark-McGhie has some Good News to share!!

Our relationship is getting stronger as the months go by when I see how God's plan and purpose for our unity is revealed more and more. We laugh a lot and enjoy teasing each other. Our openness helps us get through the toughest of times. I ask her how she balances being married to her manager? I have learnt to trust his judgement as a manager since he is usually right with his

Exclusive Interview

Exclusive interview with Saloum N’Jie the next Best Thing in FILM By Mr. Lekan Olujinmi

y exclusive interview with a man I consider to be the next best thing in film, you heard it from me first. I (Lekan Olujinmi) and Saloum N’Jie meet in Whitechapel for the interview.

Lekan Olujinmi and Saloum N’Jie

Saloum N'Jie, born in London, of Gambian and Guyanese origins, a graduate of a LAMDA course at Springboard Islington College, was the first ever black assistant director to work on a 007 Bond movie since the franchise began in the 1960s, when he worked on "Tomorrow Never Dies." The first feature film he worked on was "The Man That Knew Too Little," which was directed by Jon Amiel and starred Bill Murray. Saloum, an accomplished musician, has played for the most successful steelband in Europe : The Ebony Steel Band, for 20 years as a percussionist. In his spare time he has participated in Cineclub, which is an after school program teaching children the art of filmmaking from pre-production through to the finished film.

Please tell the people around world what you have been doing over the year regarding your films to date? The past year has been great for me. My short film had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and if you want a film to have its first screening that's the place for it to happen. Moving on from that, the film has been invited to the Portobello Film Festival, it will also run on the world film festival circuit. I have also directed the 2nd unit on Luther season 4 starring Idris Elba and co Directed the 2nd unit on the hit Fox TV show called Legend starring Sean Bean. Tell our international readers what keeps you inspired to continue Directing Films? My passion for films stems from an very early age. My Mother took me to see The Empire Strikes Back and that was the moment I knew I wanted to direct movies. Apart from being a great movie that was the first time I saw a Black Man in space it was Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. It had a big effect on me and I remember leaving the cinema thinking I wanna make movies. Directing films is my way of communicating ideas on a global level, it allows me the freedom to escape in a world that I created and gives me access to visualise and create - portraying characters and themes from anywhere be it fact, fiction or anything that I think of. Have you ever considered directing films from the Bible with Majestic actors in lead rolls? Of course. I believe that the world is more than ready to see black actors in leading roles, portraying Moses, Jesus, Mary, ancient Egyptians as Pharaohs and not just slaves. We have a vast number of historical Black characters that need to come to the screen and portray our stories to the world. www.panacheoccasions.com

What is the best film you have directed, the one that you enjoyed most? This has to be My Fare Lady. The whole experience of working with a group of talented individuals like the writer/cinematographer Oli Kember and my Producer Nick Bain. I also had a very talented cast, Sean Brosnan and Stephanie de Giorgio were fantastic. The screenplay was funny and dramatic with a great ending. http://myfareladyfilm.com/ At the end of another long shift in his London cab, single father Ben begrudgingly accepts a last fare from a pregnant lady. Name some of the key projects you have worked on over the years? I have worked on some of the biggest movies in the world as an Assistant Director like World War Z with Brad Pitt, Pirates of The Caribbean, Luther, Wrath of the Titans, Heart of the Sea, Sherlock Holmes, Maleficent and Bond. I've learnt how to put films together, seen how production works and learnt firsthand from some of the biggest directors in Hollywood. What University did you attend? Westminster College. Do you think that people of Majestic colour do not get key directing rolls in Europe, America etc? How can we improve on this issue? African Directors in America have it a lot easier simply because they have a longer history in the movie world than we do in England. From my experience the British film scene is difficult because there is a nexus of affluent white men in control of the industry's finances also there is a culture of coming up through the ranks you have to earn your way up, serve your time just like the military I guess. In America if you have talent regardless of where you come from they will give you that break. However, things are improving with the success of Steve McQueen who won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave. Also if you look at Idris Elba and Chiwetel Ejiofor, that went to America and returned as huge stars showing the world that there is a pool of Black British talent. But we need more black directors to break on through to tell our stories our way and that's what I intend to do.

What would you be doing if you was not directing films? I have no idea, I haven't even thought about it. What do you consider are your main passions in life? My Children, being positive and my ever evolving creativity. What are your Directing plans for 2015 & beyond? I'm working on a slate of films that are at the development stage which I'm excited about, my plans is to go big!!!!! What are your main passions & hobbies? I play for the Ebony Steelband so music opens up all kinds of ideas in me that allow me and gives me the energy to do what I love doing. What is the one thing life experiences have taught you while working as a film director that you would like to teach to the younger generations about the film industry? Endurance. From my experience being a director can be tough, you have to work with so many departments. You will be asked so many questions that you have to answer but at the end of the day it's your vision that's important and you have to be loyal to that. What did you love most about life when you were growing up & tell us where did you grow up? I grew up in Ladbroke Grove West London which was a massive playground for me, always seeking adventure I was pretty much free to do as I pleased. Growing up in the late 70s early 80s before video games and mobile phones forced me to create my own entertainment. My Mother and Grandmother have both been a major

influence in making me the Man I am today. My Mother at one time was the chairwoman of the Steelband Committee and my Grandmother is a pioneer in the Notting hill Children's Carnival movement so I have always been surrounded by creativity. Describe in three words what is real LOVE for you? Real love to me is my wife and children, but for the sake of three words it's Commitment, Honesty & Trust. If you had the chance to do things all again in life what would you do differently? Nothing!! I have learnt so much with my journey, learning from my mistakes and at times failing is how you grow. What is it that Saloum N'Jie would like to be remembered for? I would like to be remembered for being a positive role model for always doing the best I can, and to be remembered as one of the world’s greatest Film Directors. What would be your dream film to direct? A Sc-Fi film like The Empire Strikes Back. I like a big ambitious movie that takes the audience on a journey that would entertain and educate at the same time. Most of The African Continent and The Afro-Caribbean Countries have gained their independence but are still so dependent on former colonial rulers and their version of our history, when do you think we will have our true version of our stories told? We will only have a true vision of our stories when we are able to finance and have distribution of our movies it's as simple as that. www.panacheoccasions.com

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BLACK AND WHITE SKIN

By Crystal Kassi

E

thnic Skin: How is it different? When shopping for black natural skin care products, it’s important to take into consideration the differences between black skin and mixed race skin. Skin of colour, also known as ethnic skin, traditionally refers to that of persons of African, Asian, Native American, Middle Eastern, and Hispanic backgrounds. There are notable differences in skin disease incidence, presentation, and treatment based on skin type.

skin, which rarely burns and can tan, but only a little. “As a generalisation mixed race skin is a combination skin type. Why? Because mixed race people get different characteristics from each of their parents. Black skin tends to be oily on the face and dry skin elsewhere,

white skin tends to be ‘normal’ or oily. Each mixed race person is different, even between siblings. So it is possible that some ethnic skin care brands may work well on this type of skin whilst others may not.

(ROOPAL V. KUNDU, MD, and STAVONNIE PATTERSON, MD, Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, Chicago, Illinois)

The Fitzpatrick Scale was devised in 1975 to classify the response of different skin types to ultraviolet light. It divides skin into six tones; from people of type I who have red hair and very fair skin which burns easily, through to type VI black

Mixed race skin ages at a slower rate than white skin, but ages at a faster rate compared to black skin. This is due to the extra protection provided by melanin, which protects against UV along with mixed race skin usually being oily due to sebaceous glands being more active. (Tanaha Hairston, MBA, Dr. Jennifer T. Haley, MD)

At skin level, the structures and cells are identical regardless of the colour of our skin. Only the melanin formation and its distribution to surrounding cells changes. www.panacheoccasions.com

“People who are a four or above have more melanin in their skin, which protects them from the sun,” says Columbia University dermatologist Monica Halem, MD. People who have darker skin often look younger than their lighter-skinned peers. “A black African with skin type VI, for example, doesn’t feel the aging effects of the sun as much as a blond-haired, blue-eyed, lightskinned person of Scandinavian descent at a level one,” Dr. Halem says. When trying to choose the best cosmetics for black skin remember the darker your skin, the larger the pockets in skin cells known as melanosomes, and these contain the sticky pigment melanin. Very pale skin produces almost no melanin, while Asian skins produce a yellowish type of melanin called phaeomelanin, and black skins produce the darkest, thickest melanin of all – known as eumelanin. It’s not just the size of these pockets in skin cells that differs, but also the density of melanin packed within them. In black skin the melanin is packed so tightly that it absorbs and scatters more light, giving you more protection from the sun’s ultraviolet rays. So these are important factors to be aware of when buying natural facial products for afro-caribbean skin or sun screen lotions. What Happens to Aging Skin There are two factors that cause skin to age: chronological ageing and photoageing according to ethnic skin care specialist Crystal. Chronological ageing – like it or not, we cannot stop the passing of years from leaving their mark. 60

The crowning of Miss Guyana UK’s Zena Althea Bland MUA Karen Salandy, hairstylists Hype Coiffure, jewellery designer La Bella Collections and photographer’s Papa Ray from Corrodus Photography and Karlton Chambers from Hotshots Multimedia. 25 year old Zena Althea Bland from the Croydon Borough was born in St. Helier’s Hospital, Sutton, but at the age of three, migrated to South America where she lived in a small village called Melanie Damishana, which is formally known as Elizabeth’s Hall. This village is located on the East Coast of Demerara in Guyana.

Zena Bland, crowned Miss Guyana UK

n Friday 26th June 2015, a coronation ceremony was held to re-crown the 1st runner-up Miss Zena Bland as the new Miss Guyana UK queen. The prestigious event took place at the Guyana High Commission, 3 Palace Court, Bayswater Road W2 4LP in the presence of acting High Commissioner Miss Herbert. Miss Bland was recognise for her consistent work as the 1st runner-up and was delighted to be presented with the official sash by the acting High Commissioner Miss Herbert and then crowned by the pageant Director Tracey Benjamin. A special arrangement of flowers was presented by the Miss Teen Caribbean UK beauty queen Gabrielle Joseph. The ceremony was witnessed by Zena’s brother and sister, close friends and members of the Miss Guyana UK team. Special appreciation to Miss Bland’s sponsor’s: dress designer; Mr Francis of AgyeFrance,

As a young girl growing up in Guyana, she was involved in a lot of community building activities. She is captivated by the poetry of Dr Maya Angelou but her main inspiration is her deceased father Mr. Oswald Llewellyn Bland who repeatedly gave her the following advice: ‘In everything you do, make sure you do your best!’ Zena firmly believes that she has kept to his word which has helped her to achieve her goals and entering Miss Guyana UK in 2012 where she was crowned 1st runner-up would have certainly made him proud. Since taking on the title, Zena has taken part in various charitable and social activities in the Guyanese community and the Ugandan community also. I’ve gained confidence to also represent Croydon in the Miss Borough UK 2013 beauty pageant. Her most recent achievement was when she graduated at Middlesex University in her chosen subject in journalism. Zena’s ultimate dream is to follow in her father’s footsteps and become a fully qualified teacher and launch her own cancer awareness/support charity.
