Free Up ! By Tony Andrews

arnival. What does it mean to you? To me it means freeing up, letting go, getting loose and having the time of your life. Building unforgettable memories and living your life to the fullest, all the things that we should be doing all the time, all year round right? Carnival means to party hard because once it’s over the “party done”, at least for forty days and forty nights. Carni-val literally means meat-removal… farewell to the flesh, the flesh you eat and the flesh you enjoy! Only after Lent and the celebration of Easter do we once again become carni-vores and sink our teeth into that sweet meat that we missed so much if we so choose. For those of us in the West (Europe & the Americas) carnival signals the end of summer and once again is a last chance to free up in hopefully sun or rain! Cue Notting Hill & Labor Day! Even in parts of the Caribbean that celebrate carnival July & August (Crop Over, Spicemas) it signals the end of the holiday season and the start of hurricane season. Wherever carnival is celebrated, it’s your last chance to go all out before sobering up for Lent, an upcoming autumn/fall/winter or hurricane season. So what is the best way to enjoy carnival? No one can truly answer this question for you, it’s a process of self-discovery and finding yourself. For anyone who says they don’t enjoy carnival, I believe the majority simple haven’t found their niche within it. Carnival has something for everyone and there are very very few who won’t be able to find anything at all. In my own experience; for years I went to carnival as a spectator, on the sidelines, watching & occasionally chipping along the pavement or chilling by a sound system or food stall. Carnival, however, would not be carnival without visiting my aunty in Ladbroke Grove, hanging out her window, and soaking up the vibes with good food, good music and family.

Cover Page Feature However, after 20 years of this, I decided I wanted to try something new. Fancying myself to be a natural-born leader (not to mention, in the words of soca artist Lyrikal, “I’m just a loner, for the carnival...”) I joined the “Board of Directors” for London Notting Hill Carnival Limited. After trying to make my mum proud and beaming with pride, I quickly found out that being at the top of the organisation was not an easy place to be. The politics was intense; dealing with competing mas bands, static sound systems, street food vendors, the London Borough of Kensington & Chelsea, Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police and local residents. I prepared myself for all of these stakeholders, but what I wasn’t prepared for was the press who wanted a juicy story at all costs. I decided to step out of the limelight and into the shadows. Carnival is a time for bacchanalia, to get wild and you certainly don’t want to do that in the spotlight! Now, I enjoy mass as part of a band with my island people, representing 473 (our international dialling country code). What goes on in the band cannot be written in print and certainly not published, and that’s the essence of what carnival is all about. If you have a perfect life, you probably don’t need carnival. Eevery day is bliss, but in reality we all have reason to free up, let go, leave our troubles/ worries/concerns and simply be free. If this is something you think can benefit you (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t need a good time) then I implore you go get out, jump up, whine & go down to some good vibes before the season is over and the party done. Wishing you a safe, happy and enjoyable carnival Tony Urbansmash

CONTROL

By Patrick Lewis - YOUR FITNESS GURU

W

e hope last month’s health tips were helpful, so here are more health tips to help you with your exercise routine. We all want to be fit, lose weight and look good so let’s put these tips to action and look forward to being much healthier. So Go forward and be healthy!

HEALTH:

Part of being healthy and feeling good is ensuring your body receives everything it needs to work well. However, consuming too much of any particular food can make your body work harder to try and remedy the situation. By getting into the habit of controlling your portion sizes and not overeating, you can continue to consume all the foods you enjoy whilst also benefiting from increased energy, digestion, sleep and more effective intake of nutrients.

EXERCISE:

A common pitfall for gym-goers is returning from the gym ravenous and consuming far more food than they actually need. Latest scientific findings suggest that unlike intense exercise, moderate exercise helps to burn 24

AUGUST 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

calories and make you feel great without vastly increasing the appetite hormones in your blood. You will then have greater control over your food choices and portion sizes.

NUTRITION: Many people vastly overestimate the amount of food that constitutes a single serving. To help control portion sizes, try imagining your plate divided into four quarters; fill one quarter with wholegrain carbohydrates (a portion about the size of your fist), one quarter with lean protein (the size of your palm) and the remainder of the plate with vegetables. This approach will help you create a balanced meal without all the hassle of weighing and measuring.

Based on the NHS CHOICES eatwell plate, try to eat: The eatwell plate highlights the different types of food that make up our diet, and shows the proportions we should eat them in to have a healthy, balanced diet. It's a good idea to try to get this balance right every day, but you don't need to do it at every meal. You might find it easier to get the balance right over a longer period, like a week. Try to choose options that are lower in salt when you can. Eating healthily is about eating the right amount of food for your energy needs. In England, most adults are either overweight or obese. This means many of us are eating more than we need, and should eat and drink fewer calories to lose weight.

Plenty of fruit and vegetables Did you know that we should be eating at least five portions of a variety of fruit and veg every day? More on 5 A DAY. Plenty of potatoes, bread, rice, pasta and other starchy foods Choose wholegrain varieties whenever you can, or eat potatoes with their skins on for more fibre. More on starchy foods. Some milk and dairy foods Go for lower-fat milk and dairy foods. These are healthier options to help you get enough

protein and calcium. More on milk and dairy foods. Some meat, fish, eggs, beans and other nondairy sources of protein These are important sources of protein, vitamins and minerals, and form part of a healthy, balanced diet. More on meat, fish, eggs and pulses. Just a small amount of food and drink that is high in fat or sugar You can cut down on fat and sugar by eating fewer sweets, cakes and biscuits, and drinking fewer sugary soft drinks. More on fat and sugar.

6 Forces to battle for a successful redundancy transition (2/6) By Jenni Williams

T

he E in PESTLE stands for economic factors that could be a combination of opportunities and threats as you map out your transition after redundancy.

Weakening Threats

As you know, the economic and employment markets are a moving feast, where changes in one area impacts on others. By scanning the economic environment you can gain a helpful understanding of the broad long-term trends that could influence your career path. Take the widening balance of payments and the foreign deficits problem for example (reported to cost £80 billion a year, according to‌). This may seem far removed from your personal situation, but it has the effect of dampening business (and consumer) confidence, so that organisations are less likely to expand and hire new staff. Living standards are said to be below those we enjoyed in 2008, this suggests an ongoing yawning divide between socio-economic groups and between the regions. When you consider your next career step, your location could be a key consideration since it could have a significant influence on your earning potential. Questions have been raised about the economic recovery in the UK, since we are often reminded that the UK economy is uncompetitive, and unable to run at full throttle. The experts therefore cautiously 26

AUGUST 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

mutter that our current growth may not be sustainable, and that the economy needs to be rebalanced towards manufacturing, physical investment and exports, in order to even out historic weaknesses, strengthen the economy and satisfy business confidence. If you are thinking of transitioning to something new, understanding the threats around the economy could help you to gain some idea of where potential work opportunities may emerge, and the kind of time frame that could be involved.

Opportunity Knocks

We are currently witnessing a record level of employment at just over 30 million, of which 8 million are employed part-time. There has in recent years been a major government drive towards focusing on education and training to ensure that our labour force is ready for the new opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. This has been fuelled by regular reports of the downward trend in productivity per worker in the UK, since the economic crash, compared to other economies such as the USA, where the trend has been upward over the same period of time. As someone who is revisiting their career path, such timely opportunities to improve your skills, abilities and your expertise should be welcomed. So where should you look for the next opportunity? Well that is going to depend on your attitude to risk coupled with your thirst for opportunity, and the degree to which various economic levers affect your options. At present there are listings available of popular careers that have gained importance in the light of the latest economic, social

and technological advances, and below is a list provided by Alec.co.uk, which makes interesting reading:-

Next time we will look at the third element S, which centres on the societal forces that can impact your career transition.

• • • • • • • • • •

So tell me, how has the economic landscape influenced your thoughts in terms of what you might like to do next?

The Jam celebrated in Somerset House exhibition 2015 with Chronixx By Mr. Lekan Olujinmi

I

was truly humbled to be invited to see the man himself, Chronixx aka Jamar Rolando McNaughton at London’s gorgeous Somerset House, which played host to a series of summer music concerts again this year. Featuring George Ezra, Jessie J and Belle and Sebastian and many more. What a great Sunday evening. (Raye it was good getting back together with old friends, what a great evening we must do that again. Love the Jamrock Jerk Chicken). Chronixx aka Jamar Rolando McNaughton is one of Jamaica’s biggest selling artists, his fusion of reggae, dance-hall and clever lyrics has made him a rising star in the industry. He performed with his musical crew, ZincFence Redemption, and supported by Dre Island and recently appeared on the prestigious Jimmy Fallon Show in America. . lyrics. He will be performing with his musical crew, ZincFence Redemption, and supported by Dre Island. He recently appeared on the prestigious Jimmy Fallon Show in America. Chronixx was the 'stage' name his friends bestowed on him, replacing the name 'Little Chronicle' he was given as the 'junior' to his father, the artist Chronicle. A little star amongst his peers, he had shown a love for music and song writing from an early age. He was born October 10, 1992 and was named Jamar Rolando McNaughton. His father, a musician, recognised his talents and nurtured

him in an environment in which he could grow into whatever area of music he chose. Always accompanying him to the studio, Jamar grew up around the likes of Burro Banton, Norris Man and the legendary Gregory Isaacs. With a big smile and an engaging personality, he confidently set out to make his mark in music, by writing his first song 'Rice Grain' by the age of five and going on to be choir director and worship leader at 11. Coached by Danny Browne, he recorded his first song with him in 2003. Always displaying his versatility, Jamar, as a young man at St. Catherine High School, harmonised for gospel artistes such as Jermaine Edwards and reggae artiste Lutan Fyah.

for Maverick Records. While focusing on academics, with a special love for Visual Arts, Chronixx knew that his inner voice was coaxing him to let his own voice be heard. After his brother's death in 2009, Chronixx became more inspired to 'push out' and as fate would have it, in that same year, met some 'brothers' who have undoubtedly impacted on the promising artist he is today.

Today, Chronixx credits his versatility and his professional stage presence to the early lessons he received from his father Chronicle, who always shared his own experiences and encouraged his son to go one step beyond with each performance. Chronixx is not disappointing his father, his family or his friends who know that the 'sky is the limit' for this young man who sees 'music as his mission.'

The synergy he found with Romaine 'Teflon' Arnett of ZincFence Recordz gave birth to the creation of a singer, stepping out militantly with a unique voice and armed with lyrics and an accompanying musical sound, set to capture his place on the reggae music stage. In 2010, as if on a mission, Alty 'J.O.E' Nunes impacted on the lives of not only his brothers, Aijah & Jahnoi, but on Chronixx as well. They started working as a team and after Joe's passing in February 2011, Chronixx, in honour of the Jah Ova Evil legacy, took his career to another level. Instead of going on to Edna Manley College as planned, he, along with other members of the Jah Ova 34

The History The August 1st Emancipation Day is recognised as a national holiday in a number of countries across the Caribbean and the Americas. After the passing of the 1833 Abolition Act and full emancipation from 1st August 1838, the first week of August became a historical landmark. It has been used as time to reflect on the achievements of the brave African and Caribbean freedom fighters who stood up against the powerful institution of the Trans Atlantic slave trade which shaped our history.

Exclusive interview with film director: Daniel Ndlara Robson (A.K.A) Kool D By Mr. Lekan Olujinmi

M Betrayal.

y journey to film making by Daniel Ndlara Robson (A.K.A) Kool D, The film director for the new TV Series

I have always been interested in film from a young age. From the days of television cartoons like Superman and Spiderman. By school going age I was involved in a few plays and drama classes. I remember even playing Santa Claus and school drama. The big cinema was sort of the final push into me falling in love with film. I have to date seen hundreds of movies because I love to see expressions of different magnitudes and watching a creation come to life. 38

AUGUST 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

Being on movie shoots and television recordings at the likes of BBC gave me an opportunity to finally realize my dream of filmmaking. I did not want to do the usual film I wanted to break ground and create the film that was not the norm. Shooting with great actors and state of the art cameras like Red cameras made the experience worthwhile and very liberating. The combining of actors from different backgrounds and nationalities has always been a goal. The lack of fusion of talent from the western filmmakers and actors with their African counterparts created a gap in the market . There was also no or little synergy between various African countries in the film industry. I felt there was a need to share the markets and also talent.

With this in mind I embarked on a journey to minimise that divide between the continents and also within the African continent itself. I managed to put together a few networking events involving all aspects of the filming industry. The idea was to enlighten, learn and combine talent from the world over. Keynote speakers from across the board with vast amounts of experience shared their experiences and perspectives. This led to more to more projects but this time in the form of actual film.

accomplishment but opens up other potential markets and opportunities. The current film Betrayal is a suspense filled, emotionally gripping thriller based on young love, betrayal, lust and crime. The roller coaster of emotion makes it a worthwhile must see and I highly recommend it. Website:-http://www.betrayalmovieseries.com Email: info@betrayalmovieseries.com Also on Facebook, twitter and linkedIn

I wrote, produced and directed Broken Cross which featured talent from across 4 continents and as much as 10 different countries. It was a enriching experience to be able to put that project together. We were covered by various media houses local and international. This cultural diversity is very powerful and penetrates different markets and cultures. It’s a formula I will continue to use and also challenge my fellow filmmakers to pursue as it enriches our craft. The Current film Betrayal which is still in production, was done in the same spirit of as we call in AFRICA Ubuntu. Which is sharing opportunities and giving. We have put accomplished actors like Sean Cronin of James Bond “baddie” fame and is also the villain in the latest Tom Cruise Movie, Mission Impossible, together with South African actors like Kagiso Modupe of “Scandal” alongside student actors who would not otherwise have gotten such a golden opportunity. Also starring is T-Ann Manora, originally from New Zealand, she is well known for Spartacus TV Series. Bringing such a diverse group of talent has not only been a great privilege and

Please tell our readers around world what you have been doing over the year regarding your films? I have recently finished premiering a movie called Broken Cross and now working on a new film called Betrayal TV Series Tell our international readers what keeps you inspired to continue Directing African Films? It’s something that I do for the love of inspiring others, entertain and educate our communities through media and arts, As an African I just feel that there are a lot of stories and somebody has to do it, so it took me courage to make a difference

Do you consider directing films from the Bible with Majestic African actors in lead rolls showing our true history regarding the Bible? Indeed I do consider that ,because there is a lot of African influence in the bible but which never been portrayed in a bigger way, so I do feel that it’s important to correct and educate our future generations What is the best film you have directed to date? Dangerous Zone was the best film ever, as my first film to be directed and produced by me, I had to use two red cameras and a big crew, and it was a very ambitious film project Considering that Hollywood tends not to invest in our Film industry, do you not think it is strange that African film industries want to brand next to something wood? Yes there is some sort of belief amongst some of African’s film makers lo that of we put wood at the end of our film industry name ,we will be recognized easily, but I do disagree for instance Warner Brothers is an American independent film company which has a billion market share What can we do better to get our films marketed worldwide? We as united Africans at home and in diaspora, we should come up with our own strategies or platforms to market film industry e.g. the body should have the power to regulate and control the quality of films within Africa and all films do with Africa, also as censoring board and also a funding platform where investors and sponsors and other stakeholders can channel their funds through. Film makers can join and get all the support in all aspects of film production, marketing and distribution. 40

AUGUST 2015 /

www.panacheoccasions.com

The body will be able to work alongside the corporate world and governments, partnering with business. All talented actors and film makers are supported so that they can be able to earn a decent living, by doing so, our film industry will start to be recognized internationally and the industry will grow, also strong media coverage of our film productions will help the industry to grow. Do you think that people of African descent do not get key directing rolls in European or in the America’s? Yes I think so, simply because as Africans we should be using our stills and recourses to develop or own filming industries, just like how the Europeans and Americans did to their filming industries What would you be doing if you were not directing great films? I will be a politician because I like to see development change in quality of our lives in our society and I think politicians have the power to initiate changes and to represent the voiceless of our communities What do you consider are your main passions in life? To make a difference and to inspire others What are you currently directing for 2015? Betrayal TV Series What should we be looking out for from you film wise? More action packed movies from and better quality standards of production

What is the one thing life experiences have taught you while working as a film director that you would like to teach to the younger generations about getting on in the film industry? If you believe in your vision and you want to be a recognized film maker one day, start even shooting with your mobile phone or use any home cameras, like a 7D is so cheaper to buy and can still make better images, if you believe in your dreams they will come true but start by starting to take a first step for that journey. What did you love most about life when you were growing up & tell us where did you grow up? I used to loved acting in drama at school, people started to notice me as I always steal the attention and I used to love Mkadota Bhuru Rengozi and Mai Rwizi, these are the old films when I was in my primary school, also I used to love drawing, I remember drawing a portrait of the headmaster and I won some price for that, I grew up in Zimbabwe ,my home town is Masvingo, but I later on moved to Gweru to complete my

O-level and later Harare the capital city. Describe in three words what is real LOVE for you? Unconditional, forgiving and respectful If you had the chance to do things all again in life what would you do differently if anything? I would not leave my country of birth, and I would word hard contribute to my country’s development and spend more time with my family and friends What is it that you would like to be remembered for in life? As Social Entrepreneur, Passionate Leader, Philanthropist, Inspirator What would be your dream film to direct? An African film based on our untold African stories which will unite and make us as Africans proud, to involve different African countries and launched on a world platform

Most of The African Continent and The Afro-Caribbean Countries have gained their independence but are still very dependent on former colonial rulers and their version of our history, when do you think we will have our true version of our true stories told? I think there is not any better time like now, we have visionary leaders who are spearheading for change, promoting African countries to use their natural resources to develop their countries then to allow exports of raw materials which won’t benefit their economies, the current AU chairman president Robert Mugabe, we need more people who are brave enough like him to stand for the rights of every African, surely with that leaders who are as courageous like that, Africa’s future is so bright.

THE LOVER’S ROCK MONOLOGUES By Coral Consciouslee

O

n Saturday 18th July, I just got in from a brilliantly entertaining evening with Victor Romero Evans, Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson.

like to “rub down” by Victor Romero Evans.!! Cleverly interwoven into the humour and singing, was the message that we as women, should love ourselves as God created us and not as society dictates we should be. The men were encouraged to appreciate the women. Most importantly we were all encouraged to love each other.

The venue was packed. We made it just in time to see the play about back in the day and the music that held us together. The “Lover’s Rock Monologues” was held at the Ashcroft Theatre, Fairfield Halls Croydon. Normally the audience takes time to warm up and get into the show, but not this crowd. We were all ready as Victor Romero Evans opened the show, we laughed at every nuance, every word, every flick of his flowing locs. For me it was my first time and I was not disappointed, or bored. I listened enthralled as all three described what it was like to be a “Lovers Rocker” back in the day. The clothes that was worn, what our parent’s said/ thought, and the music we listened to, the times we fancied ourselves in love. We were even treated to a three-stage tutorial (he dare not take us any levels further) to what is was 46

We could easily have been sitting in a house on the sofa with a drink in hand, sharing experiences. It takes skills to pull something like that off!! The clapping and cheering carried on long after the singers and musicians left the stage and deservedly so. Victor Romero Evans, Janet Kay and Carroll Thompson, I commend you on thinking outside of the box; for taking your years of experience and songs and putting it altogether in a nostalgic, humorous and thoroughly engaging show. As I always say “Please continue xxx”

AFRICA FASHION WEEK LONDON 2015

ack with a bang, Africa Fashion Week was held in London Olympia August 2015.

Once again this is the one show where you will be guaranteed to be entertained not only by the rhythmic sounds of 'The New Africa' aka T.I.N.A but because the fashion is just so bold and so vibrant. The models on the runway had everyone bouncing up from their seats to get a picture and a few familiar faces that we have grown to love were present. We had special guests taking part in this this year’s fabulous show non other than “South African Fashion Council” which I think we were all delighted to see so many South African designers under this umbrella of fashion. This definitely sparked up the interest, Africans just love to see what each neighbour has to offer, after all we are all one and this can only make the creative sector stronger. South Africa seems to be one to watch out for right now with lots of Fashionistas, Bloggers and Artistic Designers in a way maybe we hadn't seen them before. Tumilla was HOTTT! hot this clothing line hooked my attention with the very modern style that I was not necessarily expecting. Vivid red and clean black and white, the style of the garments was sharp and very wearable. Geometric triangles and clear Perspex looking materials featured on most pieces. Another line with eye catching style was SAKARA no classic cut was present here and I loved that about it as you didn't feel like you missed out because it has lots of the

fabric that had African print in them, the main colours were Yellows teamed with reds white and gold. The the style and attention to detailing was fascinating in the back of some of the garments which were cut with flower style cut outs which looked amazing. LIHIYA Clothing was like a coming together of Thailand and Africa it was all very soft and serene with Thai hats to complement the garments the South African Native sister's collection looked like you could have been at a beautiful peaceful resort somewhere in the world. Asake Oge for Daviva gave us a young but very sophisticated style with slightly fitted dresses in Orange with Pink traditionally influenced style and with colours such as peach, brown and yellow and also garments that were predominately bright yellow. The silhouettes tended to be long maxi dresses or skirts and tulip A-line style dresses and peg leg style pants with cropped tops. Many of the pieces had detailed racer backs and there where dresses with cutout detailing. Sheer fabric was used and a few zip-up back detailing where visible the models backs. The patterns again very geometric and graphical, think, math class meets trend setter. LE EKHAYA was one for the fashion set with the undeniable Military style in each piece the models took hold of the stage with their serious strut which they had been taught by their talented choreographer Sola Oyebade (Mr Mahogany). Capes galore, very effective when you want to make an entrance with the silhouettes and designs reflecting power. Long line jackets and cropped jackets and dresses, nearly all had a cape style the colour palette was of a rich dark olive green hue. With some African touches with African fabric on some parts of the garments and www.panacheoccasions.com

the green fabric was also off set by the use of the contrasting white fabric. With this being the designer’s debut at AFWL she had us at hello, we salute you in style Unique Simbanda of Le Ekyhaya. VICTORIA GRACE was all about the shirt dress with oriental print with the bamboo designs and swing style dress with a nod to the 60s pockets were added to some of their dresses making them practical, cool and chic. MARY MARTIN had ruffled detailed pieces in her collection with fancy fabrics very glitzy and there was even a piece that had been inspired by the poor Lion Cecil. The guys were not left out at all with the "I know myself style garms" that would be great for any man that knows the styles that he likes, great tailoring light colours and really stylish suits with a difference and some very casual relaxed pieces in some of the designers’ collections. NOMADES the fashion line that is, was fresh and very youthful with cold shoulder tops and light and easy maxi skirts with such a beach vibe with an array of lilacs and light pastel colours any print there was, were small apart from the tie dye that some pieces had. New beautiful faces, models and personalities you may have noticed at the show such as Maggie Smith the beautiful model with stunning African eyes and the Face of AFWL 2015 that appeared on all those campaign ads for AWFL in the amazing outfits styled by CRYSTAL DEROCHE brought a chic French flavor with her style. VICTORIA MICHEALS Brand Ambassador and Model wearing her heart on her sleeve, with a good head on her 60

shoulders this young lady is tipped as one to watch. Another great Brand Ambassador for 2015 was Noella Coursais, founder of MALAIKA making it a big part of here duties along side modelling is giving back and putting back into the communities with her non profit organisation. The high caliber of hair styling was as to be expected at this show and was stunning for want of a better word, in African culture hair means everything and hair must look good for an event like this. The Hair Team have it down when it comes to their styles with lots of quiffs and big buns on the top of the head, 1920s type finger waves/pin waves with side parting and chunky braided styles with products provided by “Motions” one of the show sponsors. This year also new to the show were one of our friends and familiar favorites the long running cosmetic line “Fashion Fair” the models sported very dark almost damson tone eye shadow and fuchsia plum lip colour, this was the look that I think stood out most for me. Last but not by any means least “KZN Fashion Council” had garments that spoke a thousand words with an unapologetic African vibe. An array of beautiful garments with bright bold colourful pieces which brought out the grandeur of the models in these outfits. There was such a beautiful garment that was reminiscent of an Egyptian outfit but in baby blue so that was very different it was soft but yet made a statement all the same. Many exhibitors had came as South Africa's “KZN Fashion Council” designers such as Amanda May, LilyBlue Design and Steve Mandy accessories and clothing.

Founder of this spectacular event is African Fashion Week London's Ronke Ademiluyi 5 years running and we are loving what you do and we so look forward for what’s to come in the 2016 show. The Miss Caribbean UK 2015 Heats By Mr. Lekan Olujinmi

I

was happy to make the trip to the Midlands for the second National heat of Miss Caribbean UK 2015, which took place on Saturday 25th July 2015, at the Red Gate Chinese Restaurant and Bar, 151 Hurst Road, Birmingham. The journey took extra hours because we spent more time on the road trying to get out of London than we did on the motorway getting to Birmingham. We had thought that the energy we had felt in the Manchester Heat of Miss Caribbean UK would be difficult to re-create. But we were wrong! Chinese and Caribbean’s united to produce a show which we could all be proud off. I was the able to take some very good pictures of the beautiful young ladies which

his was such a lovely event by Sharika Miller Miss Teen Caribbean UK Director it was so nice to be recognised and honoured for all the hard work throughout the years. The Miss Guyana UK Pageant has been going for 21 years on and off believe it or not it has been a hard road to travel but the love for my country and putting a show on keeps me going. We strive with pleasure at stopping

Sharika Miller wrote: “You should always pay homage to those who paved the way! It was my pleasure to present Miss June Daley, Miss Tracey Benjamin and Miss Angela Cox an award for their contributions in promoting Caribbean Heritage through pageantry in the UK”. Sharika I would just like to say to you take heed from your elders, I too started out very young organising this pageant and am still here today enjoy what you do continue to flourish and never give up.

I am so proud of what we have achieved and what is to come and the pageant has groomed me, matured me, disciplined and shaped me into the woman I am today. Keep up the good work with Miss Teen Caribbean UK. Tracey Benjamine

dwin Broni-Mensah is a social entrepreneur who started GiveMeTap – a free water refill network in the UK. ”For every bottle that we sell, we are able to help another person get access to clean drinking water.”

Edwin is on a mission to make clean water easily accessible to every human in the world. He has begun creating a water refill network, where people can get free water refills from cafes/ shops that participant in the scheme. This will help combat the over-use of plastic water bottles, and reduce the number that get tipped into landfill. He created a stylish reusable water bottle and partnered with cafes and shops where the public can get free water refills on the go. Simultaneously, for every bottle purchased, GiveMeTap can give one person in Africa access to clean water. http://www.justbetterjobs.com/edwin-broni-mensah-givemetap/

Horoscope

Horoscope for AUGUST 2015 In August, Saturn is going to do a final lap in the sign of Scorpio and give those born at the end of the 3rd decan of all 12 signs a rather hard time. This austere planet will more or less hold them to account. It will be an opportunity for them to learn a few lessons and finally draw a line under the past! Jupiter will move into Virgo on 11th August, where he will encourage us to roll up our sleeves and stick to reality, but also to reap what we have sown. If we have acted in accordance with our souls and in awareness of the good of everyone (and ourselves), we can hope our efforts will be rewarded sooner or later. For those who have taken short cuts and sometimes defied the law or tried to escape their responsibilities, the price to pay (and frustration) could be a heavy one!

OLD GOAT

The young couple invited their aged parson for Sunday dinner. While they were in the kitchen preparing the meal, the minister asked their son what they were having. “Goat,” the little boy replied. “Goat?” replied the startled man of the cloth, “Are you sure about that?” “Yep,” said the youngster. “I heard Pa say to Ma, ‘Might as well have the old goat for dinner today as any other day.’” STOLEN CAR After shopping for most of the day, a couple returns to find their car has been stolen. They go to the police station to make a full report. Then, a detective drives them back to the parking lot to see if any evidence can be found at the scene of the crime. To their amazement, the car has been returned. There is an envelope on the windshield with a note of apology and two tickets to a music concert. The note reads, ‘I apologize for taking your car, but my wife was having a baby and I had to hot-wire your ignition to rush her to the hospital. Please forgive the inconvenience. Here are two tickets for tonight’s concert of Garth Brooks, the country-and-western music star.’ Their faith in humanity restored, the couple attend the concert and return home late. They find their house has been robbed. Valuable goods have been taken from thoughout the house, from basement to attic. And, there is a note on the door reading, ‘Well, you still have your car. I have to put my newly born kid through college somehow, don’t I?’ www.panacheoccasions.com
