Dear Readers, On behalf of all at Panache Occasions Ltd, publishers of Panache-E-Magazine and host of Miss Caribbean UK, we would like to wish you all a Blessed Holiday and a Peaceful, Positive and Prosperous New Year. This month’s edition is focused, as always, on looking positively towards the future and realizing the goals that we make for the year ahead as individuals and as a community. Some goals, however, by their very nature, are not achievable in one year or even several years and so need even more focus. Getting or communities to work together to achieve economic independence is an example of one long term goal that we hope we will soon attain. We have more to tell you about how we are making advances towards reaching that particular objective in the New Year. As well as highlighting the positive endeavours of BAME individuals, our aim has always been to encourage our communities to become stronger by encouraging closer ties between communities across the UK

All 16 contestants on stage before the final 7 are announced. The event featured a VIP reception for the sponsons, judges and Diplomatic officers in attendance. The doors were then opened to the public to enjoy the bar (which I must say was very reasonably priced) whilst listening to the sounds of our live steel pan band.
With the coloumns of the building dressed in Caribbean Nation flags; cameras flashing and the sweet tinkelings of the steel pans filtering through the crowd, one felt a palpable, positive energy flowing through the air. The doors were opened to the main event.
Our MC on the night, Mr Livingstone Gilchrist, conducted the greetings and then the show started; and what a show!
Miss Caribbean UK’s very own multi-award winning choeographer and Artistic Director, Mr.Reuben P. Joseph created fabulous productions, to showcase the ladies using different scenarios. Interspersed between the varios rounds the audience were entertaind by our array of superb entertainers who kept the energy up all night.

Last year we learned a massive amount and used that experience to improve efforts in all departments, this year we learnt more and we are very much looking forward to MCUK 2016, when we will have the opportunity to again use what we have learned to improve on what is, as we have been told, already a fantastic production. Once again, we would like to thank everyone who put their energies into making Miss Caribbean UK 2015 a fabulous success!

About Amy Through my weird gift of jumping into a sandpit, I was a proud member of Antigua and Barbuda’s athletic team at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the national Long Jump record holder. I adore Caribbean food to music as well pursuing a Masters in physical education and sport science. The qualities I possess are hard work and the ability to perceive through adversity. My athletic background taught me to work hard, with the opportunity to appreciate the little things in life by sharing my experiences and giving back to those in the community. I aspire to make a difference in schools, sports and most importantly in life. I have been fortunate to travel and live the life of a commonwealth athlete, in which I want others to follow and reach higher. To be an ambassador you must make a difference and engage with those who look up to you.

Fashion Cities Africa
Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, Brighton, UK 30 April 2016 to 8 January 2017
T
he first major UK exhibition dedicated to contemporary African fashion will open at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery in April 2016. Exploring fashion and style in four cities at the compass points of the African continent - Casablanca in Morocco, Lagos in Nigeria, Nairobi in Kenya and Johannesburg in South Africa - Fashion Cities Africa will consider recent and contemporary fashion practices in these distinctive metropoles, from couture to street style. The exhibition will focus on the style choices of individual ‘fashion agents’ from each city; from designers and stylists to photographers and bloggers. Helen Mears, the Museum’s Keeper of World Art, Martin Pel, its Curator of Fashion & Textiles, Africa fashion specialists Hannah Azieb Pool and Helen Jennings and researcher Harriet Hughes visited the cities in summer 2015* to explore their fashion scenes and identify key players. Helen Mears says: “There’s been a surge of interest in contemporary African art and design in Europe and the US in recent years, but this is the first major UK exhibition dedicated to contemporary African fashion. We want to reveal the diversity that exists across the continent - and within single cities - and show that wax print is only part of the story of African fashion. “Each of the cities featured has its own fashion scene: in some cases emergent, in others
more established. Some African designers are now major players in international fashion, while others are experimenting creatively in the interface between global fashion and local identities. “The exhibition aims to provide a snapshot of fashion practices in four specific cities and an introduction to some of the stories behind the style, whether it’s the widespread practice of tailoring or the impact of the huge market for second-hand European clothes.” The exhibition will occupy three large galleries and include diverse apparel from couture to street style, alongside images, film, sound and even a reconstructed tailor’s workshop evoking the drama, creativity and dynamism of the distinctive cities. Highlights will include: • New commissions, including by Nairobibased brother and sister duo 2Many Siblings(http://2manysiblings.tumblr.com/) • Controversial high-fashion outfits worn by one of Kenya’s hottest bands, Sauti Sol (MTV Europe's Best African Act 2014) • Garments and accessories associated with The Sartists, a Johannesburg-based creative collective documenting their lives and style in post-apartheid South Africa (https:// instagram.com/thesartists) • Exquisite hand-crafted ‘caftan couture’ pieces by Casablanca-based designer Zhor Raïs • Apparel by Maki Oh (TBC), the internationally acclaimed Lagos-based label worn by figures including Michelle Obama www.panacheoccasions.com

A parallel project, undertaken by members of some of Brighton & Hove’s African diaspora communities, will explore the relationship between fashion, identity and the African continent from a local perspective. Powerful images from the project, which will be co-ordinated by Sarah Naomi Lee, will accompany the exhibition. Fashion Cities Africa is part of the wider project Fashioning Africa, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund through the Collecting Cultures programme – which supports strategic collecting projects for museums, libraries and archives. Brighton Museum & Art Gallery already holds an important collection of historical African textiles, mostly gathered 18801940. Thanks to National Lottery players, Fashioning Africa will research recent developments and establish an African textile and fashion collection representing 1960-2000. Running until 2017, the project has appointed a collecting panel from BAME and fashion communities, and will be delivered in partnership with the University of Brighton and the Sussex Africa Centre at the University of Sussex. Fashion Cities Africa will also be accompanied by a book of the same name, edited by Hannah Azieb Pool with contributions by Helen Jennings (Intellect, 2016, £20). This will showcase street styles in the four cities through images of their fashion agents by high-profile fashion photographers (Sarah Waiswa, Victor Dlamini, Deborah Benzaquen and Lakin Ogunbanwo), accompanied by profiles and essays.

6 Forces to battle for a successful redundancy transition (6/6) By Jenni Williams
T
he last E in PESTLE represents the opportunities and threats that centre on the environment; this includes climate change, environmental legislation and other trends relating to our geographical position and jobs. As with the other elements that make up this acronym, there is some degree of overlap, with for example technology and social trends. Climate Change The media continually feeds us with information about the need to reduce our carbon footprint. The government stepped in some time ago, and initiatives like recycling has become part of our daily lives. You can even find websites which encourage you to give away unwanted household items, as a way of avoiding issues around landfill. The sustainability of our environment, and being seen to be environmentally friendly have been used by the business community to lure us into buying ethically, based and ethically sourced items – often at premium prices. As a result of the importance placed on “looking after our environment”, this trend looks set to continue. If this is an area that interests you, it is worth investigating, in terms of the types of roles that may emerge, especially since any future government is likely to keep this topic high up on the political agenda.

Changing Jobs The UK is still attempting to balance its books, following the banking crash of 2007/8. We are now in the grip of austerity measures which have fallen most heavily on the public sector, and those who access state benefits. Many process driven jobs such as financial, retail and personal services have been pushed aside by the internet. In terms of making a career transition after redundancy, the opportunity to reinvent yourself is yours for the taking, especially if you consider that the upcoming areas where there is likely to be a sustained demand for work are in: energy conservation, renewable power, building, education, training, transport and insulation (of homes). There are many who believe that jobs that focus on sustaining our environment, could be a key weapon in the government’s war on unemployment. One organisation, the campaign for 1 million secure government jobs, actively lobbies the government, with a view to ensuring that such jobs emerge - www.campaigncc.org Social Responsibility Since the banking crisis many more of us are paying off our debts in order to save. Low interest rates on savings have helped to sustain this trend, alongside very low or no wage rises over the past few years. However, rising mortgage, credit card and student loan debts are ongoing features that continue to highlight the fact that average wages continue to drag far behind inflation. Earlier in this series, the polarisation of jobs, in terms of highly paid versus low paid, low skilled jobs was highlighted. In order to reduce this imbalance, reskilling and upskilling around the type of jobs mentioned above would help to bridge the gap. Roles
linked to improving the environment tend to be highly valued and are seen as trendy in today’s society, this outlook is likely to continue to sustain their appeal, and attract a good level of pay. The six PESTLE areas highlighted in recent weeks show that there are a host of interconnected trends at work that are
being played out against the demographic winds of change, and which can be used to inform your strategic plan and maximise the opportunities available to you as you map out your career transition, especially if you are looking to redesign your career. So tell me, what are you passionate about in terms of your environment, in terms of the work that you do?

Interview with Adekeye Oduneye
A
By Mr. Lekan Olujinmi
dekeye Oduneye is a Nigerian born image consultant and bespoke fashion designer; the creative mind behind “INDIVISUAL by Keye”. Offering the finest in luxury tailoring, they cater to clients of all shapes and sizes around the globe from their base in the heart of London. Indivisual by Keye has been running for over 5 years with a strong passion for growth. I must say that I am very proud of you as my young cousin for running your own fantastic collection and company, good on you. Can you tell all your wonderful fans what you have been doing over the years of being a noted fashion designer with “Indivisual Collection”? Thank you some much for the acknowledgment cuz. It’s been a roller-coaster journey through the years but my passion, family and clients have kept me inspired and focused. Over the years a lot of my time has been spent on growing the brand and establishing a true identity for the fashion line; one that people can identify with. Through all this, the brand has evolved from “Indivisual Collection” as it was initially known to “Indivisual by Keye”. Tell our international readers what keeps you in the fashion industry? What keeps me in the industry is my determination to promote an individual identity for each client I meet. I am a firm believer in promoting personal style and class rather than swagger and vanity. Can you see yourself crossing over to African designs and fabrics? Yes and No. I say this because I am doing some research in this area. However, unless I can provide a service that’s second to none and distinct from what is already out in the market then I won’t touch it. It is rather frustrating to see the lack of creativity in the use of African prints.
Who would you most like to work with or design for ie Film set, Theatre costumes, Music Video etc? Wooow! Now where do I start from, there is a very long list of people but for the purpose of this interview I would say Will Smith and Samuel L Jackson. Also, the aim is that by 2016 I would dress a few people at the Oscars, Golden globe and of course the BFATA’s. Please can you name some of the big projects you have worked with over the years fashionwise? I have designed pieces for grooms at a number of prestigious weddings. I have also featured in some well-known magazines with about 3-4 big features to follow before the end of 2015. How do you see the “Indivisual by Keye” improving? I see the brand improving by gaining a presence within the UK men’s fashion market. This will be achieved through marketing and PR initiatives. So watch this space! Did you have the support of your family when you said you wanted to be in the fashion business? Family have been amazing and pretty open-minded with me, because I have come from a creative background with a degree in Broadcasting Media and Popular Culture. They were not too surprised to be honest. What do you consider is your best season collection to-date? Because I do “Bespoke Fashion” every piece is tailored to meet each individual’s needs. I therefore do not have “collections” as we know it. Perhaps in the future….. What do you consider are your main passions in life? Making a difference and inspiring change. What are your plans for 2016? 2016 is looking very promising, the 2nd half of 2015 has been amazing with 2 award acknowledgments, 7 different fashion shoots with the 8th one in the pipeline. 2016 will be turning all the previously mentioned activity into business.

Exclusive Interview
Do you have goals regarding your profession & other hobbies? Yes, my goals motivate me and keep my drive alive. For now, all I will say is there are things in the pipeline and by God’s strength and wisdom they will come to fruition next year. What is the one thing your life experiences have taught you while working in the fashion industry that you would like to teach to the next generations? This industry is hard and sometimes lonely, people will always want things for free and promise you the world; so be careful. People will give and expect you to follow them even though you never requested it in the first place. To the next generation, I will say, have a clear idea of your audience/niche understand your design/idea and look for a mentor; this does not always have to be a real person but research someone with a similar journey/story. As an example my mentor for Business culture and Entrepreneurship is Sir Richard Branson; Fashion is Tom Ford; Motivation and inspiration are President Barak Obama, Martin Luther King and for inspiration and wisdom nuggets, the Bible What did you love most about life when you were growing up? Family, culture and running around as a kid. Too many tales and memories but I can say I have enjoyed life thus far. Plenty of treasured moments still abound in the future I’m sure. Describe in three words what is real love to you? Patience, laughter & trust If you had the chance to do things all again in life what would you do differently? Learn to have more faith in myself at early stages in my life. To stop over trusting and expecting people to mirror me. What is the message that Keye Oduneye by the way of “Indivisual by Keye” is trying to put across to your fans worldwide? That fashion is personal and not a trend as society presents it to be. Keep aspiring for better and as the famous saying goes “To thine own self be true”.

Exclusive Interview
Interview with Bakayoko Mediofo, A.K.A, Back Medio By Mr. Lekan Olujinmi
B
akayoko Mediofo, A.K.A, Back Medio is a Reggae singer, songwriter from Ivory Coast. He began his career in 1981 as vocalist with an orchestra directed by the legendary Andre Meyan. His first album ‘Marital Issues’ (Problèmes Conjugaux) released in 1994 propelled him to the forefront of the musical scene in his country and Africa. Due to censorship of his politically engaged third album (Identity Crisis), Back Medio fled his native country to find a safe haven in England in order to continue to pursue his musical career. With his 4th Album entitled TERE (the SUN) in Bambara, due to be released by studio STILNESS with the help of producer Pablo Paratchino, Back Medio has come of age by drawing inspiration from UB40, Bob Marley and Burning Spear whose lyrics and songs have had a huge positive effect on his song writing style. Medio’s new Album is an upbeat Reggae sound with lyrics centred on the thought of people living together in harmony. Looking to the future, Back Medio hopes to become a well-known and respected artist in England, Europe and the world. Can you tell all your wonderful fans what you have been doing in England over the years of being a noted African Star? Well ! To cut a long story short, I sought asylum in the UK since 2002 right after the release of my third album (Identity Crisis).
62 DECEMBER 2015 / www.panacheoccasions.com
BAKAYOKO MEDIOFO, A.K.A, BACK MEDIO
Because I became the target of a fringe of the army and politicians who did not like my message. Unfortunately if any of you have followed the news concerning Ivory Coast, the very issues I was talking about resulted in a 10 years civil war. I have tried at best to play my music since I have been here, and now I am working on my Fourth album. Tell our international readers what keeps you inspired to continue within the music industry? Music is simply able to soothe the soul. If you listen to music and understand the mesage you will not heart a fly. Can you see yourself crossing over and becoming a worldwide artiste? Of course, if you listen to my song Rasta Bongoman, you’ll realise that I should have crossed over many years ago Who would you most like to work with musically? My Idol Burning Spear Please can you name some of the projects you are currently working on? Like I said earlier I am now promoting my fourth album, TERE (the SUN) in Bambara. I am also working on a compilation with some reggae big hitters. It is due out in early 2016/ How do you see the African music industry improving on the world market? I think it is all about promotion and hard work and most of all the proper redistribution of royalties. Did you always have the full support of your family when you said you wanted to be in the music business? www.panacheoccasions.com

My father who was an army Colonel (May his soul rest in peace) never wanted me in music, but when I sold 450.000 copies in six months, he changed his mind (laughs). What do you consider is your best song & album to-date that everyone can remember? My fisrt album (Problèmes Conjugaux or Marital Issues) spoke about our daily life as humans. People enjoyed it. What do you consider are your main passions in life? I am all about music. What would you be doing if you were not in the music industry? This is what I have always wanted to be. What do you consider is you best album? It is really up to the fans, but I think they will love TERE because it is more mature. My producer did a tremendous job. What is the one thing your life experiences have taught you while working in the music industry that you would like to teach to the next generations? The industry is full of sharks. I did not see the money I made from my first album. So, I would say to anyone who wants to get into music to open their eyes and be professional. What did you love most about life when you were growing up & where did you grow up? I grew up in Abidjan (Ivory Coast). Very early on I sang in youth orchestras Describe in three words what is real love to you? PEACE AND LOVE 64 DECEMBER 2015 / www.panacheoccasions.com
If you had the chance to do things all again in life what would you do differently if anything? Of course play my music and learn the management side of the art. What is the message that your music is trying to communicate to your fans worldwide? The one message that I try to convey is that your enemy is not your fellow human being. Our true enemy is ignorance. It is ignorance that brings about hate of the unknown. We should all try to understand diversity. What great African song of another artiste would you like to cover and why? I would love to cover one of the great Fela Kuti’s songs because he advocated unity. When are you planning to put out a new album and what can we all look forward to? My album is right around the corner. My managerial team (ICM) spearheaded by Claude Djaquis based in London is at work as we speak. They are true professionals. In conjunction with my producer Pablo Paratchino. Horoscope
Horoscope for DECEMBER 2015 Between innovative proposals and solutions, which could help us out of the current turmoil, not to say deadlock on a social, political and human scale, and the conflict of interest between nations and peoples, we will probably have some difficulty in ending an extremely momentous year on a high note, to say nothing of peace. We should focus, however, on everyone’s goodwill and growing individual awareness to succeed in inspiring our leaders and everyone collectively, leading them (at Christmas?) to abandon the warpath and do all we can to raise the level of debate. A difficult aim to achieve but not impossible!
