In The interview below, Julius not only reveals to Panache-e-Magazine that he is set to launch to the World his AW 2016 Collection but also gives an insight into what makes this talented individual who he is today.

In a nutshell, who is Julius Reuben?

I’m a British Tanzanian born, London based performing and creative artist. I work as art director, runway choreographer, stylist, actor, producer, supporting artist, and semiretired dancer/model. However, I’m ever so excited as I have just recently become a garment designer and will be launching my

When you were a child what did you dream you would be doing when you grew up?

People wouldn’t believe me when I say that I wanted to be a priest when I was young.

I felt that I had so much more in common with priests as I observed that they are tremendously spiritual, they wear dress-like garments, and they don’t get intimate with women. At a young age, I became an alter boy and started working on the wedding services at my church. I developed a fascination with the brides and idolised their symbolic attire.

How long have you been doing what you do & when did you start?

It was then that I realised that there was something much deeper and stronger about me which needed to be uncovered. There was no one else like me, I was unique.

However, due to the ignorance of our society, I struggled with my identity and therefore, unknowingly used fashion and art to express myself in order to succeed.

What did you love most about life when you were growing up and where did you grow up?

I loved my utter determination and tenacity in combating my obstacles that I faced. My sexuality didn’t create a picturesque life. I moved around and grew up in varieties of cities and an assortment of boarding schools around Asia and Africa and then later on in London.

Who is your favourite designer and why?

As a rule, I tend not to have just one designer / brand as my favourite. Variety is the spice of life so I love: Givenchy, McQueen, Balmain, Versace and Walter Van Beirendonck. Lately though, the designer; J-W Anderson has caught my eye. He has a very innovative, very forward thinking, very androgynous, very futuristic and yet very now brand.

Tell our readers what keeps you inspired to continue within the fashion business?

I love creating. I love to see what I come up with next and for it contribute in what makes me happy. You have to be in love with fashion/art otherwise you’re doomed.

Do you think that your choice of business has changed you for better or worse?

Well, it is like a yoyo with its up’s and down’s.

It takes and it gives. I make a living out of my choice of business although I’m not living the millionaire lifestyle yet but so far I’m good.

Ask me the same question in 6 years time.

What do you consider are your main passions in life?

My first passion is fashion/art. However, I have developed a very strong desire to educate some people who display their ignorance towards people like me. I would like to help them to recognise how their lack of understanding can be very damaging and cause distress.

You were privileged to be invited to have tea with HRH Prince of Wales. How did you feel?

At first I was a mumbling wreck, but I managed to pull myself together very fast and had a quick few minute’s chat with him and nice laughter.

What would be your best choice of where to live in the world and why?

LONDON, always, minus the weather.

Compared to many places that I have travelled to, London has the best and much more variety than the rest of the world. You will never get bored in London as there is always something happening and something to do.

What advice would you give to others trying to get into the fashion industry?

Be yourself as you are the best form of uniqueness. Create from the heart and most of all, do it with love. www.panache-e-magazine.com /

What are your plans for the 2016 and beyond?

Just to keep doing what I do and take the lessons that I have learned from 2015 to 2016. I have a few projects lined up… fingers crossed they all go to plan then I will be happy but I will also allow the year to surprise me. Like Bowie said “I DON’T KNOW WHERE I’M GOING FROM HERE BUT I PROMISE IT WONT BE BORING” Did you have New Year’s Resolutions regarding your profession & other hobbies?

Yes, to finish my driving lessons and then learn how to play the piano, as I really want to buy one.

What has been your biggest challenge to success in your career?

My Race and Sexual Identity. My former agent once said; “For someone on your structure honey you could have gone so far and you would have become so big if only you were a bit straight and bit lighter”

What has been your most inspirational book and why?

If it is not work related or a script, I intend not to spend my precious time reading as I just want to live it. Do books still exist? We live in a modern world where every thing is accessible at the click of a button and most

books have now been summarised in to a small paragraphs or quotes. So I will be lying if I said that I have read a book lately. I don’t really get inspired by books. What really inspires me are inspirational quotes like: “Be the best of what you know now and when you know better then be better” “Live and dress everyday like it’s your last day on earth” What is the must do social media activity for greater impact in your career?

I’m crap when it comes to social media. I’m not the right person to ask.

What do you see as the most powerful emerging trend in your professional life at the moment?

Bohemia Retro with a twist. But what I’m loving at the moment is embroidery and the heavy knitting as it has proven to be at its best in 2016!

If you were to travel back in time to when you were 8 years old, what advice would you give to yourself?

“Chillldd!!! You better tighten up your belt as you will have the ride of your life and most won’t be pretty but fear not, as you will come through it strong as ever.”

Why is the world a better place because of what you do in your career?

Like the creators, for some people fashion and art is a form of relaxation and a form of quick healing. It makes them feel good about themselves. If that makes me a contributor of the world’s peace for a better place hoooorayyy!

unny Dolat, 2 Many Siblings and Sauti Sol are the Kenyan “Agents of Influence” who will be featured in the first major UK exhibition dedicated to contemporary African Fashion. Exploring fashion and style in four cities at the compass points of the African continent Casablanca in Morocco, Lagos in Nigeria, Nairobi in Kenya and Johannesburg in South Africa - Fashion Cities Africa will consider recent and contemporary fashion practices in these distinctive metropoles, from couture to street style at Brighton Museum & Art Gallery from April 2016.

The Stylist: Sunny Dolat is a Kenyan fashion stylist, creative director and production designer. His background in visual arts set the stage for a career in evolving concepts in beauty and design, from fashion shoot mood boards to luxury hotels of international repute. He was the creative director of the fashion film “To Catch A Dream”, starring renowned Kenyan model Ajuma Nasenyana, and firmly believes in the role of film as both an extension and disruption of the catwalk. His online fashion intervention, Chico Leco, has grown from high fashion editorial work into a holistic brand representing the bold, eclectic aesthetic of an eternal Africa, shifting the narrative and expectation of Kenyan fashion beyond Ankara, Kikoy and Kanga, and making unapologetic statements about the dignity of black skin. The Siblings: Nairobi-based brother and sister duo Velma Rossa and Papa Petit (aka Oliver) are the founders of trendsetting Tumblr 2ManySiblings: ‘a curation space for art & photography’, inspired by the diverse city of Nairobi, a thriving thrift culture and a rich emerging community of young African artists and designers. The Musicians: Sauti-Sol is an internationally renowned afro-pop group formed in Nairobi by vocalists Bien-Aimé Baraza, Willis Chimano and Savara Mudigi. Their unique sense of style have created a stir across Kenyan media. Outfits from the group will be on display at the exhibition.

African textiles, mostly gathered 18801940. Thanks to National Lottery players, Fashioning Africa will research recent developments and establish an African textile and fashion collection representing 1960-2000. Running until 2017, the project has appointed a collecting panel from BAME and fashion communities, and will be delivered in partnership with the University of Brighton and the Sussex Africa Centre at the University of Sussex.

Fashion Cities Africa will also be accompanied by a book of the same name, edited by Hannah Azieb Pool with contributions by Helen Jennings (Intellect, 2016, £20). This will showcase street styles in the four cities through images of their fashion agents by high-profile fashion photographers (Sarah Waiswa, Victor Dlamini, Deborah Benzaquen and Lakin Ogunbanwo), accompanied by profiles and essays.

ne thing I love about my people is that they have style. It permeates every facet of their lifestyle, including the way they love.

In this article I break down the various ways in which we love, what it could mean for your relationship and gain a deeper insight into that person who could be your perfect match!

EROS STYLE

This is the most traditional love style. We discuss it first and give it a little more TLC and attention‌ The Lighter Side of Eros The most typical and obvious style of love is what we call 'Eros'. It is hot & passionate.

You cannot keep your hands off each other.

It is full of longing and lust. Yet the bonds this style creates can make you fall deep and dizzy in love. Like a potion or a drug, the Eros style of love is addictive! People in long term relationships often refer to this phase as the 'beginning' phase of a relationship or the honeymoon phase. People in casual relationships may describe this style as the hot & steamy love affair. Some people may say they're looking for no strings attached, but those who fall into the Eros style of love form such strong bonds and feelings that they can't help having more strings attached than a full concert orchestra.

Not only is the Eros style of love highly carnal and physical, it is also very deep and emotional. It is the style of True Romance and essence of Valentine's Day. It is mostly out of your control, you have been struck

by Cupid's arrow. The intense feelings are a result of chemistry, it feels right and you go with your intuition. Love at first sight and acting on impulse, trusting your feelings and leading with your heart are the ultimate hallmarks of the true Eros style. If Eros style lovers get married, it's because they've 'found the one', they don't want to lose this feeling, they don't want to lose each other and they want this to go on forever, until death do us part. It goes without saying that the sex is absolutely mind blowing. It's intensely physical, but at the same time it's beyond physical.

Your soul mate can never do anything to hurt you, it would be like hurting themselves. They are your other half, your better half, and if you cry, they cry, 'we cry' together. Being away from your lover for too long causes agony & despair. However the intensity of emotion can feel draining.

Sometimes you just want a break. There are times during 'Netflix and Chill' where you just actually want to watch Netflix and chill!

The sex becomes predictable and routine.

You wonder if your partner is just using you to get his or her needs met. When you take sex out of the relationship, you may find out that actually you're people on different journeys. This is why it's common for Eros lovers to grow or drift apart, even after a short time.

Pragma is very cerebral and deals with practical concerns such as lifestyle, security, career goals.

Here’s what you need to know about Pragma WAGS (wives and girlfriends) of celebrities and athletes. Gold diggers. Marriage of convenience. Being of service. Rational.

Realistic. Sincere. Performing a role. Function.

Looking for value, desirability, compatibility, traits. Relationship must achieve a goal.

21 TIPS FOR SELLING, BUYING OR BUILDING PROPERTY IN THE CARIBBEAN By: Maureen Smith

S

tart as you mean to go on for a happy outcome! Whether you’re selling, buying or building property in the Caribbean, getting it right will depend on doing it right. The following tips are provided as a guide on some of the things you should and should not do as you embark on your sale, purchase or construction of property in the Caribbean.

SALE TIPS

1. A poorly presented property will deter potential buyers, so de-clutter and ‘stage’ your home for sale. Flowers and a scented candle or two will often give your home a ‘good feel’.

2. The sign reads ‘Land for Sale’, but all potential buyers can see is an area that resembles a jungle. A cleared lot will

enable buyers to envisage the best position for building that dream home.

3. The sale price of your property should be determined by a qualified valuer (aka valuator in the Caribbean) as opposed to an emotional or sentimental valuation.

PURCHASE TIPS

1. If you are not a cash buyer, first establish whether or not you will qualify for a mortgage from a Caribbean lending institution before commencing with your property search.

4. Annual property taxes should be paid up to the end of the current tax year that applies, as most Caribbean islands will not allow titles to be transferred to new owners if taxes are outstanding.

5. Having to apply for a lost Title Deed in the Caribbean can be a lengthy and costly process, so make sure you know the whereabouts of your Title Deed before your property is listed for sale.

6. Sellers of property in Jamaica are required to have Taxpayer Registration Numbers (TRNs), which is a unique 9-digit number that is similar to National Insurance or ID number.

7. The transfer of title to property in St. Lucia cannot proceed if you owe personal income tax.

2. The location chosen for your property should be determined by the purpose for which you are buying it.

3. Sending your purchase funds to the Caribbean will usually see you getting a better rate of exchange than those given

4. A check should always be carried out by a surveyor to ensure that there are no encroachments affecting the property that you intend to buy.

5. The legal process for buying property in the Caribbean is different to buying property in the UK so always retain the services of an attorney to deal with the legal formalities on your behalf.

6. Some Caribbean islands require nonnationals to have an Alien Landholding Licence before they can purchase property. These include, but are not limited to, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago and St. Lucia.

7. Ingoing funds from overseas residents buying land or homes in Barbados should be registered with Central Bank,

as otherwise you will be prevented from bringing out the full net proceeds in one transaction from subsequent sale.

BUILDING TIPS

1. How suitable is the land for building a home in the Caribbean? Seek advice on this.

2. Always have a contract in place between yourself and the builder before any construction work commences.

3. It is advisable to retain the services of a suitably project manager when building a home in the Caribbean.

4. If you are asked by a contractor to hand over the full costs to build your dream home in the Caribbean run a mile and don’t look back.

5. Some contractors will have accounts with different suppliers that allow them to buy materials and fixtures and fittings at better prices than if bought by you. It’s worth discussing with your contractor.

6. There will be many choices to be made by you when building a home in the Caribbean. For example, type of roof, windows, doors, walls, kitchen units, tiles and the list goes on. Discuss ALL with your contractor before construction commences and make sure that your choices are noted in writing by them and you.

7. Building a style of home to suit YOU can be a wonderful experience, but remember that every change made by you to the original drawings and fixtures and fittings will attract additional costs.
