Mr Paul (Barry Boom) Robinson

Mr Paul (Barry Boom) Robinson tells his story! The story of a boy living with his Mother and Father and brothers in Peckham South London. He tells how he and his brothers started off in the music industry, how they had jamming sessions in their bedroom with only a guitar and a piano whilst using the wardrobe as the bass. Then we will find out about how he started his own record label; working on stage with Maxi Priest, Freddie Mcgregor, Sly & Robbie more. We will hear about how he made recording history with his production of “Mi God mi King”, with Papa levi. He reveals his plans for now and the future and also tells us about his new Album, “Everyday Life”, which is out now and can be downloaded from ITunes and Amazon.

Panace E-Magazine talks exclusively to Mr Paul (Barry Boom) Robinson

W

hilst researching for this interview I had re-acquainted myself with some of the artist iconic music. The most memorable to me and probably to the majority of readers out there, was this tune, “I’ve got a giiiiiirrrrrrrrrrrl on the other siiiiiiiide of town, she’s waiting for me to come around and lay my body down to make loveeeeeeeee...” This tune has a bass line and lyrics made for rubadub! if you were in a club and were unable to get a dance when this tune came on, someting wrong! It was a balmy Saturday afternoon in Hither Green and I was waiting to interview one of the all time great contributors to British reggae music, but also someone who has far less recognition than he deserves; that man is Mr Paul (Barry Boom) Robinson.

last one; the wash-belly. I was rhythm guitar and used to sing a couple of the lead vocals. Well to be honest where it really first started was in our bedroom; we had a piano and we had a guitar. We had some shoe boxes and shoe polish tins for drums. We used to use the side of the wardrobe as the bass, BOOM BOOM BOOM, that was the bass. We used to do our little ting like that. That’s where we first started to have the love for music, it must be around 1975. Errol and Jerry were in a couple of other bands. One of the groups was called Black Steel that was Errol’s first band, and then Jerry joined that band as one of the keyboard players. Ewan and Trevor played with another band from Peckham called Howling Strong and also another band from New Cross called the Mighty Shades.

After greeting him and offering some refreshment I began the interview by asking Soon Ewan and Trevor left those bands and him to start at the beginning and tell his story. recruited me and keyboard player called Marvin along with Peter Newell on guitar Mr Paul (Barry Boom) Robinson. Part 1 of two. and together we created a band called the “Simeons”, which was in 1978. Myself, Ewan “Well we’re gonna have to go way back to and Trevor would rotate between keyboards, childhood days, back in Peckham at mum drums and bass because we could all play all and dad’s house. There were six kids, all the instruments. Then this guy called Lloyd boys. My eldest brother Neville was never Townsend who used to hear us rehearsing into the music; Errol was the next oldest and as he passed by, basically knocked on our was a founder member of the “One Blood” door, came in and said I’ve been listening to band and also performed as lead vocalist and you guys doing your rehearsals; would you lead guitarist. Then came Jerry who was the like to do an album? So we said, well yeah. I keyboard player; then Ewan the bass player mean we had never been to a studio so this and vocalist and Trevor who was the drummer was big excitement for us. He said we’ll do it and sang vocals. Then there was me who’s the tomorrow, and we said yeah ok. Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

We didn’t really have anything planned, no songs written whatsoever; you know we were just jamming! So we went to studio and just made up ten tracks. I was doing some scatty vocals, Jah this and Jah dat and you know that kinda ting; just making it up head-top stuff and it became a dub album called “A Dub Conference in London”, which came out on Freedom Sounds Records in 1978. Our payment was 25 copies of the album and that was it [Barry laughs/chuckles]. However, it was invaluable as it gave us experience in the business, you know. That was our first recording. The following year all of us as brothers sat down together to decide which direction we were going to go in. We were all musicians and we all loved music. Jerry used to be in a sound system called Ital Syndicate. So we sat down and we had a meeting and said what are going to do? Are we going to set up a sound system or a band; because we knew we needed to do something together. We eventually decided that we were going to start a band and we decided as we were family to call it “One Blood”. That was March 1979. Soon after, we met up with Neville King, who used to have a sound system back in the day. He put out a couple of records, but didn’t really produce his own stuff. He put out “Love The Way It Should Be” by the Royal Rasses, that was the first record he licensed and put out. That was a massive selling record and that helped to establish him as a label, do you know what I mean. So he met with us and we did our first recording which was, “ Sparkle in Your Eyes” with” Righteous Man Chant” on the B side on the same rhythm. We did that at Chalk Farm Studios up at Chalk Farm. That session was taken by Sid Bucknor who used to be an engineer at Studio One.

That was really our first time going to a studio properly, forget about the Dub Conference in London thing, that was just every man for themselves, it was basically a jam session. Whereas going into the studio and working with people that actually knew the foundations of this thing was everything. In those couple of days that we spent in the studio with Sid Bucknor, we learned so much about what is really involved in studio recording. He was quite open and giving, in terms of the knowledge that he had. He would explain why he’s using this microphone and why he’s doing this, why we position this there and why we do that and that sort of thing; so we learnt a lot from that. Especially me; cos I was very much like a sponge. I was so interested in the mechanics of making the music and how you do it; rather than the adulation that you get performing in front of crowds of screaming people or being on the radio. All that was nice, but I was far more interested in how this thing functions you know? And so; as One Blood we went on and had a couple of albums that did quite well for us. We released numerous singles and had many number ones, which was all very good. At that time reggae record sales were very, very healthy. To get a number one in the reggae charts you were selling 60-70 thousand records. Then you got a big tune if it then goes into the national charts then it takes on a larger ting. One Blood had loads of big, big tunes. We weren’t always touching number one, because we had stiff competition at that time. We were up against Gregory Isaacs, Ken Boothe, and Dennis Brown when they were at the top of their game, so it was tough in the market to get a number one. So if you were top ten it was really saying something.

In 1979 I was a fourth year in secondary school and we used to rehearse on top of Sound City Records in New Cross and I used to work part-time there in the record shop. Whilst working there I started to meet with different distributors and got to understand even more about the music industry. For example; how much records cost to manufacture; what the distributor gets it for; what the record shop sells it for; how royalties are calculated and you know; how to calculate the retail price, VAT and blah blah blah. That’s when I realised that we weren’t being treated right or getting accounted to correctly and that I could do this myself and produce myself. At that time we were doing a lot of studio work for Neville King and I was looking to not only produce One Blood, but do my own productions. At the time One Blood was doing a lot of recording with many lovers rock groups (Simplicity, Love & Emotion, Blood Sisters) to name a few, but I had begun rehearsing with my colleague Jesse James (Manager of the record shop) and it was Jesse who introduced his brother-in-law Maxi Priest who was a singer on Saxon Sound System. I had never heard of him ‘cos I’m originally from Peckham and then moved to Lewisham a bit later on when I hit my teens, so I was not familiar with everybody around. I knew Saxon lived around the corner from us; but I didn’t really know them away from what the people that you meet in the record shop would tell you. Anyway, he came along to rehearsal and I really loved his voice. Just prior to that Papa Levi had started attending at a few One Blood rehearsals. So I’m doing my thing now, there was me, Maxi, Errol, Jesse, Ewan and Papa Levi and we’d just jam and record it. But then a light came on in my head and I thought you know what; we have all the ingredients to make some good records. At the time the fast style

had just been developed among the DJ’s on Saxon Sound; but they had not actually been committed to record and so I started working with Maxi and Papa Levi and the first track that came out was Mi God Mi King’. This would be my first production and it came out on the Bad Breed Label on 7” limited edition. Sales went well, then I released it on 12” on the newly formed Level vibes label as a package with A side Maxi’s ‘Sensi’, then ‘Mi God Mi King’ and then the dub. On the B side was Maxi ‘Love In the Ghetto’ and ‘Ina Me Yard’ with Papa Levi and a dub, which I decided to put all together as a minishowcase kinda ting. Boom! It was number one here for weeks in the reggae charts. It was then licensed to Island Records who released it in Jamaica where it made history as the first British reggae record to go to number one in Jamaica and it stayed there for six weeks. That was a landmark for British reggae music in 1983. Papa Levi signed to Island Records so I shifted my focus to Maxi and went on to produce ‘In The Springtime’, ‘Throw Me Corn’ and ‘Should I’, which all went to number one. At the same time I was now producing One Blood doing tracks like ‘Get In Touch’, which was a massive number one record for us, that went on to be licensed by Universal Records. We were having success at that time, but I wanted to get One Blood to come over to my label to do what I was doing because there were a few things I was not happy with, but as we were having success with the Get In Touch thing my brothers wanted to give it a go . For whatever reason it didn’t happen, so I decided to put all my eggs into one basket with my Level Vibes Record label. I had all these ideas that I wanted to see become reality. To do that I had to be in charge; rather than going along with the notion of being the youngest and just agreeing and saying ok

we’ll do this or that. At that time I was feeling really creative so I decided to go full guns with the Maxi thing. We decided we were going to do an album and started to record that. Virgin got interested in the project so by the time we had finished the album, a deal was done and the album ‘You’re Safe’ came out on Virgin 10 Records. It was at that time in 1984 that the first Barry Boom single was released. The name “Barry Boom” wasn’t really something I sat down and said that’s what I’m going to call myself, it’s something that just sort of happened ‘cos around that period there was a lot of dub plates being done for sound systems and you got Maxi, Smiley Culture, Asher Senator and Pato Banton, who all used to do a lot of specials with me at A Class Studios downstairs in the basement of Dub Vendor Record shop in Clapham Junction.

Our Favourite BARRY BOOM Tunes: -

Making Love

They used to have a little dub-cutting studio under there, so we all used to do a lot of dubs for sound systems. So anyway you have Maxi Priest, that is a good dancehall name and Smiley Culture sounds like a good dancehall name, Asher Senator and Pato Banton, then you say Paul Robinson! It didn’t really fit in, you know what I mean? So I used to use different pseudonyms for the different vocal styles I used.

When You Smile

I would mimic some of the styles at the time and had different names for each style such as Barry, Pablo, or Barrington even Green Leaf, but people would say BOOM to all of the style dem; so Boom kinda stick, then somehow Barry got attached to the front and it just ended up as” Barry Boom.” READ PART 2 OF THIS ENTHRALLING STORY IN THE NEXT ISSUE OF PANACHE E-MAGAZINE!!!!

St Kitts celebrates its

By Michelle

After an 8-hour flight, I landed and was greeted by a warm Caribbean breeze and an even bigger St Kittian smile. Then it was a relaxing night at the luxurious Marriot Hotel. We were up early to catch the ferry to visit Island of Nevis. It’s a 30-minute journey that has to be one of the most picturesque boat journeys on this side of the Caribbean.

Stars light up the Caribbean Island at the annual music festival

W

ith the summer festival season in full swing there was one international music festival taking place on the Idyllic Island of St Kitts that continues to tick all the boxes for all the right reasons. So when the Invitation to come celebrate the festival’s 16th birthday landed in my inbox, I jumped at the chance to attend. I had been offered an exclusive 3 day access all areas pass and a chance to see the delights of what St Kitts and her sister Island Nevis had to offer. I’d heard from very reliable sources that the people of St Kitts were known to party hard. Armed with this information, I made it my mission to show the Kittians that us Brits can party hard too.

Nevis is stunning. There is a serenity and tranquility that I have yet to experience on any other Caribbean island. With only 11,200 inhabitants Nevis is the perfect destination to escape to if you want to get away from the bustle of city life. Its also the secret hideaway of the rich and famous. With the likes of Oprah Winfrey, John Travolta, Tom Cruise, Will Smith, Jay Z and Beyonce all confessing to being big fans of this sun kissed hideaway Our first stop was at the world famous Sunshine’s Beach Bar and Grill, situated on Pinney’s Beach and named after its charismatic owner. On arrival you’re urged to try the notorious Killer Bee. It’s an extra potent Rum cocktail whose ingredients are a closely guarded secret. After taking one sip I quickly realize that this drink is not for the faint hearted. I make my excuses and pass up on the opportunity to finish the cocktail. Wandering around the bar it’s clear that this place is a celebrity hangout for the rich and famous with a picture gallery that most eateries would kill for. Then it was off to lunch up at Peak Haven,

would attract broad based international participation, expose artistic excellence and promote St Kitts and Nevis as a major tourist destination.” The annual musical extravaganza comprises of a dedicated Soca night, Reggae/ Dancehall night and Soul and R&B night with past headliners including, Brian Mcknight, Nas, Gyptian, Fay-ann Lyons, Jah Cure and Fantasia Burrino. With headline acts which included Machel Montano, Krosfiyah Damian Marley, Popcaarn, Morgan Heritage, Roberta Flack, Toni Braxton and Omarion The organizers were hinting that this was one of the strongest lineups yet.

The owner of Peak Haven is former British resident Mr Edward Herbert, who left Nevis as a young man to help build post war Britain. He made a promise to return and preserve the heritage of his forefathers and develop the lives of the younger generation on the island, something he achieved with success some 30 years later.

I woke early to attend the press conference ahead of day 1, where there was some serious talk from both politicians and artists that Soca night was going to be one massive party.

After lunch, we tour the island, taking in old forts, plantations and some of the oldest churches in Caribbean. And then it was with great reluctance we returned to St Kitts for a night of rest in preparation for the start of the Festival. Created in 1996 this live music event was established by The St Kitts Tourism Authority ‘to create a world renowned festival, that

hard with all of you tonight’. Nevis’s Soca Queen Alidee announced ‘you guys better be ready to jump up tonight because tonight is the party night’. Strong sentiments which were echoed by both Krosfiyah and Machel Montano’s representative who reassured us that Soca was not dying and infact was growing worldwide.

Morgan Heritage Being a Soca virgin I was a little apprehensive at the thought of Soca all night long, but a brief Soca lesson from one of the Journalists on the trip and my fears were soon diminished and within minutes I was jumpin’ like a veteran, local acts Nisha B, and Alidee, warming the crowd up nicely in preparation for what was a high-octane performance by Bajan Favourites Krosfiyah. Then it was time for Trini Soca Warrior Machel Montano. For over two hours he performed hit after hit including One More Time and Wine on Me. At 3am the Soca star threatened to ‘take the party to 6am’ and went on to perform for another 45mins. With swollen ankles and a new found love of Soca music, I was giving the Kittians a run for their money in the partying stakes, but would I be able to party like this for the next two

nights? With that thought in my head, I head back to my room to get a couple of hours sleep ahead of day 2’s press conference and trip to the islands capital Bassetterre. Dancehall sensation Popcaan, the UK’s Courtney Pine, Morgan Heritage and a representative from Damian Marley’s camp fielded questions from the press pack and promised a night that would promote reggae and dancehall at its very best. Being of Jamaican heritage, I was looking forward to the reggae night and, I returned with my Jamaican flag wrapped firmly around my head, to the stadium where a capacity crowd waved a sea of Jamaican, Lion of Judah and St Kittian flags in preparation for headline act Damian Marley. The love that St Kitts had for Jamaica and Jamaican music is an experience that will stay with me for a long time. Saxophonist Courtney Pine came on stage in the Kittian colours performing a set that infused Jazz, soul, and reggae, he proudly proclaimed himself as an ‘adopted Kittian’ and could hardly contain his delight at being invited to perform at this year’s festival. Morgan Heritage then performed a blistering set that included Down by the River and My One and Only much to the delight of the crowd who encouraged them go over their allotted time. Popcaan came with the dancehall, jumping about the stage interjecting his set with his trademark Yeeooooooow and the female contingent in the front row had to be restrained by security during his show.

Damian Marley’s set was amazing. He effortlessly interacted with the crowd including them in song after song. Inserting St Kitts into his lyrics much to the delight of the local crowd, his performance included a musical tribute to his Iconic father, which was met with much praise.

I definitely had to get some rest ahead of the final night. But luckily for me there was a well-deserved daytrip to one of the islands most spectacular beaches.

Night 3 and R&B legend Roberta Flack took to the stage and had the audience captivated, singing along to her back catalogue which included, Feels Like Makin’ Love, and the song that had everyone singing along to Killing Me Softly.

At the press conference earlier he admitted to loving the way Caribbean women dance. This was not forgotten as he then asked for 10 girls to join him on stage and take part in a dance battle much to the delight of the male contingent in the crowd. He finished

YOU CAN! P TO MAKE EVIVAL OF HEROES A REALITY

any thanks and appreciation to everyone for your comments, messages and words of encouragement, and to all who have sent e-mails, and offers to circulate news about the revival of Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame. Unfortunately I am sworn to confidentiality and unable to publicly disclose certain details at this time, but I can reveal that there has been positive developments– developments which hopefully will in very short order materialize and act as a springboard for achieving the dream to get the show back on the road. However this is only the beginning of the mission to get the Production up and running again (this time in the best possible way and on the scale and level of production that we were able to attain during the tours of the USA) but there are many obstacles to overcome - not least the major challenges of getting the necessary assistance and funding from sponsors and the funding agencies, and especially at a time like this when just about everyone seems to be bawling out ‘economic recession’. Black Heroes is a massive production, involving a cast and production team of over 50 people, and the reasoning behind the revival is to execute it PROPERLY and to realize its’ maximum potential for the benefit of all without having to keep cutting corners, borrowing from Peter to pay Paul - and without having to compromise on quality and end up always missing out on opportunities to generate the sustainable revenues necessary to ensure its survival.

Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

What is actually needed to achieve all this might be seen by some to be ‘major’ but looking at the many other projects that seemingly managed to easily raise far much more funding for themselves only to just as easily and quickly disappear into thin air when what is required for Black Heroes is a mere drop in the ocean by comparison, and everything will be done to provide the necessary incentives to attract, accommodate and make it beneficial for everyone who is willing to support the cause and make it happen. The newly incorporated Black Heroes Foundation is a non-profit Initiative that will represent the legacy and commemorate the 25th Anniversary of Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame which was originally devised as, and started out as a voluntary Community Project to provide opportunity for young performers in the community and to celebrate the centenary of our great Black Hero Marcus Garvey (whose body was interred in the Highgate Cemetery in the Borough of Camden before being exhumed and transferred to the National Heroes Park in his native Jamaica where he was enshrined as the nation’s first National Hero). Thanks to a modest grant from Camden Council in 1987 Black Heroes in the Hall of Fame was able to set out on the mission to inform, enlighten and inspire on 3 continents, and over the 25 years it has provided a stage for over 400 talented singers, dancers, actors, musicians, technicians and other talented and creative personnel to continue to develop and display their talents in a progressive way and to the world gaining work experience and skills training and for many it has been a gateway to further employment opportunities and wider

exposure in the entertainment and creative industries. Not bad for a project that has never received any significant funding or has ever managed to secure any significant sponsorship. This is a good opportunity to publicly pay respects and say a BIG THANKS to my co-writers and producers J.D.Douglas and Khareem Jamal and to all past cast members (as well as those who are no longer here with us today) for their sterling contributions over the years. Take a bow and large up your profiles – you all have been the REAL Heroes and Sheroes of ‘our story’. The dedication, loyalty and positive attitudes you have invested in the project over the years will be hard to match by any project anywhere on earth. In order to achieve the immediate goal of getting ‘the show back on the road’ there will be other major challenges (mostly invisible to the public eye) like overcoming the high level of ‘negative behind the scenes resistance’ that is taking place among many whose only wish is to see Black Heroes fail .. and believe it or not .. even internally and closer at hand and within our midst, there are also some bad minds with personal agendas - a small pack of ‘wolves disguised in sheep clothing’ who would personally like to see ME fail. (They know who they are so I will leave it up to them to identify themselves) To them I say, first and foremost, Black Heroes has never been about me, and I will also add that failure is not a part of my vocabulary, but if I do happen to fall short of the target it will not be for a lack of trying and regardless, I will keep

Yes it’s true, there might really be an economic recession taking place (as we are constantly being told by the banks and those who control the financial purses but who themselves have never tried to assist us in any way before) - but another reality is that we have been subject to austerity conditions which have been supressing the development and advancement of our cultural potential for far too long! How far would you go to save lives? Established in 1996 by Beverley De-Gale and Orin Lewis, the parents of former Leukaemia sufferer Daniel De-Gale, the charity provides valuable support to people suffering with blood cancers and facing incredible odds in their worldwide search for a donor. Every year over 24k people in the UK are diagnosed with a blood disease and or cancer. Some are successfully treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Many don’t respond to treatment and a bone marrow transplant is their only hope of survival. There is shortage of donors on the UK Bone Marrow and Blood registers and the charity recruits potential lifesaving donors; especially from Black and ethnic minorities (BME) audiences who are under-represented on donor registers. The ACLT has increased the numbers of potential BME donors from 550 to approximately 37,000 and has found life saving matches for 40 people. Before the ACLT was formed, the odds of finding a BME donor were 1:250,000. The odds have improved to 1:100,000 but the aim is to reduce the odds further by increasing the numbers on the BME register to 60,000. Funded entirely by donations from the general public, the charity is holding a fundraising 5k Marrow-thon on Sunday 2nd September in London’s Regent’s Park (see the advertisement). Support the work of the ACLT by putting on your trainers and taking part in the 5k Marrow-thon. With your help, the ACLT can continue to aid people waiting for bone marrow transplants and potentially give them the ‘Gift of Life’. www.aclt.org - To find out more about the ACLT and to make a donation. info@aclt.org - To send a message about your registration. 0208 240 4480 - To speak to someone about your registration.

EMPOWERING YOU FROM THE INSIDE OUT Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

M

y name is Esther Austin and my remit and passion is personal transformation, healing and empowerment. My role is to reach out and touch people’s lives. I am an Intuitive Healer, an Intuitive Reader, Soul Guide, Author and Radio Presenter. I use all these mediums to inspire, empower and support individuals with an awareness and consciousness that whatever they have gone through in life, there is always a way out. Yet there are certain universal laws that help to dictate how we deal with life. I have always been innately highly intuitive, gifted at being able to pick up on and to read what is going on inside someone’s body on an emotional, physical and psychological level. I am able to give a reading of what is going on in their life and then offer guidance in a nurturing way in terms of how they can gain clarity to resolve their situations. My own personal life’s journey has been an incredibly challenging one, yet it has served me in so many ways and has defined me for who I am today and has served me for the work I now do. My main message through the work I do is this - no matter what you go through or experience in life, there is always hope, a light at the end of that dark tunnel. Yet the most difficult part for people is in the HOW do I transform my life? WHERE do I go? WHO do I turn to? And more importantly WHO do I trust to share my load with? This is where I come in. Some say we come into the world as sinners whilst others believe we were all born into pure love and are pure love. Others say we have already signed our life contracts before we were even in the womb and that our life has already been mapped out. Whichever way the reasons swing for us being down here on earth, one thing I am certain of and that is we are all here for a reason, to serve a purpose, to serve and reach out to each other in some

way and to realise and to walk in our own greatness. Yet often along life’s precarious road many often lose sight of who they truly are because of other people’s perceptions of us and judgements. We then internalise this things and self-doubt, low self-esteem and confidence then creeps in. Sometimes these so called lessons are defined as mistakes, yet stop for one brief moment to look at the bigger panoramic picture. These lessons serve to enhance the experience of our journey offering us the beauty of understanding life on a more profound level and is a chance to make transitions. Each experience can either add or detract something from each of us, depending upon how you perceive your experience. Yet it is important to understand our role, our responsibility throughout our journey and to realise that all these experiences whether they are perceived as good or bad have moulded us into who we are today and on some level we have created these experiences. Whether we are happy with that state of being in the present moment is another thing. Therefore that is why I so love the work I do because it empowers individuals to look at how they are experiencing life and then to do something about it transforming themselves into the best of who they can be, empowering them to face and deal with negative beliefs, stuck patterns of behaviour, and other underlying issues. My work also de-stresses, energises and brings about a total sense of well-being and clarity. There is nothing more amazing for me when a client looks at me and says “I can now do life again.” Yet more importantly, my work empowers a client to face the mirror of their soul without judgement so that they can honestly deal with their present moment.

I truly believe that we can experience heaven on earth, yet this depends upon how you perceive life and understand what is really going on around you. We live in a world of tangibles, people need to know they can see, touch, feel and hear what is going on around them. Yet interestingly enough, we live more in a world of the intangible, a world where the flow of energy is simply everything and in learning how to understand and negotiate that energy we actually create our lives. Napoleon Hill once said “As a man thinketh so he becomes.” Therefore my work is influenced from that paradigm that what we think and how we feel vibrationally creates our reality and my work supports this. To me it is not so much where we start along life’s precarious journey nor where we end up, but the path in between which is laced with the lessons. I now realise that everything I’ve experienced has been part of my learning, development and growth. The biggest and most important thing I have learned is to let go and work through and manage any negative emotions so I could fully step into me. That is why I love the quote by Mahatma Ghandi which says “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Responsibility for our lives and what happens is down to us, yet on a conscious or unconscious level many people do not realise this. We all have a tremendous power within us to transform our lives and live it to the fullest. I work with people on an emotional, psychological and physical basis. There is a saying that often times our life’s challenges dictate the work we do. I can empathise with pain at a very deep level because I have been there in many forms and ways. An example of someone I worked with last year and the results. A lady came to me who has 47 fibroids, was bleeding profusely and was due

to go for an operation. After 6 sessions with me the bleeding stopped, her fibroids shrunk and she no longer needed the operation. Also we went through the process of understanding why she felt she had the fibroids and after doing some more in-depth work she realised she had carried a lot of pain and negativity all her life about situations she had experienced as a child. Another client who had been abused as a baby came to me for a reading and I was able to pick up on the abuse, how it affected her and then in order to support her through the healing process of this I conducted a Hypno-analysis session with her and within four hours I was able to squash the trauma she had experienced regarding that experience. This meant that my client remembered the incident, but she no longer felt the shame, the guilt and any other negative emotions attributed to her ordeal. My belief is this. That whatever any of us go through in life, it can be healed not always an easy process to work through but certainly achievable. Over the next few weeks I will talk about the process of healing and coming to terms with aspects of yourself that you do not like or that you want to work on. I will also show you how I use my work to really transform lives and offer tools and techniques on how you too can start to move forward. We will all journey through the processes of understanding how our thoughts really do create our reality, we will look at our emotions, and explore love from many varying angles, basically I encourage you to journey with me to find your soul purpose, your inner peace, your brilliant creative expression, empowering you to fully step into you so you can be whoever and whatever you want to be. By taking personal responsibility for you, you learn to put down the blame and the hate and your world will suddenly open up into a magical Pandora’s box.

pANACHE Aging Mildred was a 93 year old woman who was particularly despondent over the recent death of her husband Earl. She decided that she would just kill herself and join him in death. Thinking that it would be best to get it over with quickly, she took out Earl’s old Army pistol and made the decision to shoot herself in the heart since it was so badly broken in the first place. Not wanting to miss the vital organ and become a vegetable and a burden to someone, she called her doctor’s office to inquire as to just exactly where the heart would be. “On a woman,” the doctor said, “the heart would be just below the left breast.” Later that night, Mildred was admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to her knee WANT TO GO TO HEAVEN? Father Murphy walked into a pub and said to the first man he met, “Do you want to go to heaven?” The man said, “I do Father.” The priest said,”Leave this pub right now!” He then approached a second man. “Do you want to got to heaven?” “Certainly, Father,” was the man’s reply. “Then leave this den of Satan!” said the priest. Father Murphy then walked up to O’Toole and asked, “Do you want to go to heaven?” O’Toole replied: “No, I don’t Father.” The priest looked him right in the eye and said, “You mean to tell me that when you die you don’t want to go to heaven?” O’Toole smiled, “Oh, when I die. Yes Father. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now.”

E JOKES Impossible to Please A group of girlfriends is on vacation when they see a 5-story hotel with a sign that reads: “For Women Only.” Since they are without their boyfriends and husbands, they decide to go in. The bouncer, a very attractive guy, explains to them how it works. “We have 5 floors. Go up floor by floor, and once you find what you are looking for, you can stay there. It’s easy to decide since each floor has a sign telling you what’s inside.” So they start going up and on the first floor the sign reads: “All the men on this floor are short and plain.” The friends laugh and without hesitation move on to the next floor. The sign on the second floor reads: “All the men here are short and handsome.” Still, this isn’t good enough, so the friends continue on up. They reach the third floor and the sign reads: “All the men here are tall and plain.” They still want to do better, and so, knowing there are still two floors left, they continued on up. On the fourth floor, the sign is perfect: “All the men here are tall and handsome.” The women get all excited and are going in when they realize that there is still one floor left. Wondering what they are missing, they head on up to the fifth floor. There they find a sign that reads: “There are no men here. This floor was built only to prove that there is no way to please a woman.”

A Jamaican Story Chapter 6 by Clayton Brown

PANACHE - story book

T

he damage to the ceiling caused by the fire had been repaired, the room redecorated and the summer holidays were over. Now came the moment I had been dreading with anticipation. My first day at Tulse Hill secondary comprehensive school. I had been dreading my first day at “big boys” school because I had been told that when you got there the older boys would throw you over the terrace. The fact that I didn’t know what a terrace was, made the thought no less frightening. Also, none of my friends from primary school were going to Tulse Hill. So not only did I not have any friends to offer me moral support, unlike most other kids I had no “big brother” to make the journey that little easier. I wouldn’t be able to utter the words, “I’m going to get my big brother onto you!” However, I had long ago accepted that when it came to life outside of the family home I was pretty much on my own. My mother and father were not any different from most parents at that time, they loved, fed, clothed and sent their kids to school and then abdicated their responsibility to the school from 8:45AM to 4PM. Jamaican families at that time(at least in my experience) were very Victorian in their attitude towards authority. Policemen, Doctors and Teachers were right and children were definitely wrong. So if you ever did dared to come home and complain that you had got the cane or been disciplined in any way, it was more than likely that you would be doubly punished. At least in my experience! I was not going to be totally alone at school, my

cousin Ash had arrived about a year previously and would be going to the same school. As I had mentioned previously my mother had three siblings who had made the journey to the UK and they had all left children with my grandmother. I was the first to be “sent for” then my sister, after that uncle Hermerd sent for his eldest son Ash and the last one to come over from my grandmother’s house was Lorna. When I heard that Ash was coming over I was very happy. We had been best friends as well as cousins and I had always thought of him as a brother. When he arrived, the four years that we had not seen each other had made a startling change to our appearance. We had been the same size when we were six, now I was about a foot taller than he was. It didn’t matter though we got on as though we had never been apart. In fact it was very rarely that you ever saw one of us without the other and if you did you would have to enquire. Ash had a rough time adapting to life in England, especially home life. He was ten years old when he came here and was even at that tender age very much set in his ways. I had lost my accent in a couple of months or less, Ash still has his! This caused him no end of problems. As I said Ash had joined a family with five siblings, all born and grown in England and all speaking perfect English of which my auntie was extremely proud. My mother never lost her Jamaican accent or stopped speaking patwa and only slowed down the speed at which she spoke when speaking to English people. This was her attempt at speaking English. My auntie, however, would never speak “patwa”, inside or outside of the house. One of the many stories he told me regarding his inability to leave the “patwa” behind makes me laugh to this day. He was at home with his mum and she had sent him to the shop to buy some cooking oil. He had gone to the shop and when he got there the shop was closed. He ran back home and told his mum, “Me go a di shop

TRADITIONAL JAMAICAN COOKERY By Norma Benghait

OXTAIL and BUTTER BEANS • • • • • • • • • •

2 lb (1 kg) oxtail jointed ¼ cup (2 fl oz, 50 ml) oil 5 cups (2 pints, 1.25 ltres) water 2 tomatoes, chopped 2 onions, chopped 1 clove garlic, chopped 1 spring thyme 3 slices of hot pepper ½ lb (250 g) cooked broad beans Salt & black pepper

1. Wash and dry the pieces of oxtail and brown them in the oil. 2. Add 4 cups (1 ½ pints)of water, bring to the boil, then lower the heat and simmer until the oxtail is tender adding more water if necessary 3. Reduce the sauce to a thick gravy by increasing the heat, then add the tomatoes, onions, garlic, thyme, hot pepper, salt and black pepper. 4. Stir for a few minutes, then add the remaining water and the broad means 5. Mix them in, lower the heat, cover again and simmer for 10 minutes or until the water evaporates leaving a thick gravy 6. Serve with rice. Another way of preparing the oxtail is to boil it until tender and then add the seasonings. Excess liquid is removed by rapid boiling. This second method of preparation gives a less thick, rich sauce but is perhaps less fattening. Send us your comments to: - info@panacheoccasions.com

Let’s pause for a second. I know what you’re thinking, how likely is that to happen! Well there are a few schools of thought which suggest so. JUNIOR GISCOMBE ‘Mama Used To Say’

J

unior first began singing in a local band at the age of 14, encouraged by the sounds of doo-wop, early Motown, soul and reggae. As the years passed however, the hobby became a full time musical career and Junior realised that his talents lay in writing and performing his own music. His first recordings date back to a cover of the ever green song “Nice and Slow “by Jessie Green, then the song which got him noticed “Hot up and Heated”. Initially signed to Phonogram Records, 1982 saw Junior hit the chart heights with the infectious anthem ‘Mama Used To Say’ which became a transatlantic hit, prompting Junior’s appearance as the first black British artist on Soul Train and earning him Billboard’s ‘Best Newcomer Award’ presented by the legendary James Brown. The U.S. hit, ‘Too late’ which reached no 8 and his auspicious debut album ‘Ji’ followed. Junior’s second album ‘Inside Looking Out’ was released in 1983 featuring the U.S. hit ‘Communication Breakdown’. Travelling throughout the U.S. for promotion, Junior teamed up with the renowned producer Arif Mardin, who was later to contribute tracks to Junior’s third album ‘Acquired Taste’ released in 1984. That same year Junior wrote ‘Do You Really Want My Love?’ for the multi platinum selling Beverly Hills Cop sound track album. At this time he was subsequently enjoying success as a songwriter with his compositions recorded by artists such as Phyllis Hyman and Sheena Easton. What followed in 1987 was Junior’s biggest European hit, ‘Another Step’, a duet with Kim Wilde, which reached number 6 in the U.K charts. A string of performances including a tour with Wilde as opening act for Michael Jackson took place.

Towards the end of 1987 Junior completed ‘Sophisticated Street’, his fourth and last album for Polygram. Recorded in Minneapolis with producer Monte Moir and in L.A. with Stewart Levine, the track ‘Yes If You Want Me’ emerged as the album’s biggest hit single, providing Junior with yet another top 20 U.S. R&B entry in the Spring of 1988. Taking time off to re-evaluate his direction, Junior felt he needed to enhance his creative control and went on to work with his choice of producers namely; Alan Glass, Blacksmith, Simon Law (ex Soul II Soul), Robbie Taylor and Greg Smith. From this collaboration of writers/producers came the album ‘Stand Strong’, released on MCA. This heralded as Junior’s most focused work since his debut album. Mixing an exciting variety of music, the album included such outstanding tracks as the sublime’ Morning Will Come’ and the nasty groove of ‘Step Off’. Although critically acclaimed by all who heard it, Junior felt the album should have achieved more. “Both I and the record company (MCA) felt that the songs on ‘Stand Strong’ were just too good to be ignored and so I wanted to do something to reintroduce them to a new audience. Finally we rested on the idea of re-working the tracks and producing a new album, which would include 6 new tracks so as to give something more to those people who bought ‘Stand Strong’. The album aptly entitled ‘Renewal’ was released in November 1992 on MCA and it saw Junior continue the relaxed theme of ‘Morning Will Come’ but taking it into the next phase. As Junior said, “on this album I became a lot more spiritual and lyrically I felt I became much stronger. On the ‘Renewal’ album are innovative tracks such as ‘Never Gonna Let You Walk Away’, You Don’t Have To Look Far’ and ‘Why’.

Health and Fitness tips for August. by Patrick Lewis your fitness guru

PANACHE - health & advice

T

his month and every month we bring you tips to help you with your fitness routine.

We all want to be fit, lose weight and look good so we thought we would help you on your way to a healthy life style and give you tips on exercise, health, nutrition. This summer month is going to be a real hot one, so here we bring you a safe and healthy way to start training and exercise, So Go forward and be healthy

Feeling hot hot hot! HEALTH: When it’s hot outside, our muscles compete with the skin for blood circulation. More blood flows near the skin to help dissipate body heat and cool the body down, but this also means that less blood reaches muscles, leading to tiredness and lethargy. So how can you stay energized as the temperatures soar? EXERCISE: Always be careful not to overdo your workout. Exercising too intensely in high temperatures could put you at risk of heat stroke or injury so be sure to wear light, loose fitting clothing, plenty of sun cream and always stay adequately hydrated. It’s especially important to keep your water levels up as you can quickly become dehydrated when heat and humidity are high. It’s imperative to drink plenty of fluids that would help hydrate

your muscles and skin adequately in order to maintain internal cooling down. Always make sure you understand how to use the equipment properly before you begin your workouts: take advantage of an induction and advice from personal trainers so that you use the equipment safely and maximize the benefits of your time in the gym. A few initial sessions may be all you need. NUTRITION: Brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are more plentiful in the summer so keep your energy up by snacking throughout the day on sliced cucumber, celery, carrots and apples. These are great hot weather picks because they contain a significant amount of water and can actually thin the blood, which has a cooling effect. Garlic has long been considered a medicinal food, with its anti-microbial powers one of the most extensively studied of any food. The key active medicinal constituent is a powerful plant chemical called allicin, which provides a variety of health-giving properties (as well as a delicious taste and aroma). Try adding raw, chopped or pressed garlic to salad dressings or olive oil to take full advantage of the benefits. PROSTATE AN EXPERT TELLS WHY TEST Dr Frank Chinegwundoh

Send us your comments to: -

P

ROSTATE CANCER is the most common cancer in men in the UK, accounting for a quarter of all male cancers. Approximately 37, 000 new cases are diagnosed each year, which is approximately 100 new cases per day. It affects mainly men in late middle age and old age. In the UK a man has a 1-in- 9 chance of being diagnosed with prostate cancer. About 10, 000 men a year will succumb to prostate cancer. The outlook for a man with prostate cancer is good, if the disease is caught early before it has spread. Unfortunately, in the UK approximately 25% of prostate cancer is diagnosed when the illness cannot be cured, although there are treatments that will prolong life. In 2006, I published a paper, which has subsequently been confirmed in larger studies, showing that black men in the UK had a three-fold greater risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer than their white counterparts. This echoed data from the USA. The reason for the racial disparity which holds true all over the world is currently unknown. Research is concentrating on genetic factors. Whether higher rates of prostate cancer translate into a higher death rate is the subject of debate. American data would suggest that black men are more likely to die of prostate cancer than white men, but preliminary UK data does not support this. Of course the health systems are different.

urinary troubles, such as a poor urinary flow, passing urine frequently or at night, or having to reach a toilet in a hurry. Recent onset of erection difficulties may also herald prostate cancer. Most men with urinary symptoms will not have prostate cancer, but it is only by seeking expert medical advice that prostate cancer can be excluded. Crucial to the diagnosis is the blood test PSA, which stands for prostate specific antigen. This is a chemical made by the prostate gland and extruded into the bloodstream. The normal PSA should be below 4 ug/l. A level above this suggests that prostate cancer may be present. Prostate cancer is also suggested by the prostate feeling “hard” on digital rectal examination as opposed to the normal “rubbery” feel. Many black men are reluctant to have a rectal examination. The author in talking to groups of men, on behalf of Cancer Black Care, reassures them that such a quick examination is nothing to fear and indeed can save their lives.

ADVISABLE Every man over the age of 50 is entitled to a blood test on request to their GP. The earlier prostate cancer is diagnosed the more the treatment options and the greater the likelihood of cure. Waiting for symptoms may be too late. As black men generally develop prostate cancer at a younger age than white men, it would be advisable to start PSA testing at age 45. Prostate cancer can be “hereditary,” therefore prostate cancer in the family should lead to a request for PSA testing from the GP. If the PSA is SYMPTOMS raised or the prostate feels abnormal, the GP It is important to appreciate that prostate will refer the man to an urologist, who is a cancer may be present even if there are no specialist in urinary system disorders. There urinary symptoms. Or it can be linked with is an obligation on the NHS to be seen by

the specialist within two weeks. The urologist will organise a biopsy of the prostate. That is called a transrectal ultrasound guided biopsy (or trus biopsy for short). Commonly 12 samples (cores) of prostate tissue obtained are sent to the pathologist for analysis. If prostate cancer is confirmed, further tests are done to gauge the extent of the disease. The tests may include a MRI scan or CT scan or bone scan. These will determine if the disease is confined to the prostate or not. Each case is discussed by a multidisciplinary team, comprising urologists, nurse specialists, oncologists (cancer experts), radiologists (imaging specialists) and pathologists, in order to recommend a treatment plan for the patient. Not all prostate cancers need treating. Especially where the cancer is small and the PSA relatively low, there is a good chance that the cancer may lie dormant and never cause a problem. Thus some cancers can be kept under surveillance. However, where the decision is to treat the prostate cancer, there are various options when the disease is confined to the prostate. Such options include radical prostatectomy surgery to remove the prostate gland altogether. This removal can be effected through a traditional open operation through the lower abdomen or by “keyhole” surgery or by the new technique of using a robot to assist the surgeon (robotic radical prostatectomy). DOSES An alternative to surgery is the use of external radiotherapy in small doses daily for seven weeks. For some patients it is possible to offer brachytherapy, which is a day case procedure implanting tiny radioactive pellets into the prostate, where they lie permanently and give off radiation to destroy the cancer. The radioactivity lasts for a few months but by then the cancer is destroyed. Other techniques of eradicating the cancer are less widely available but nonetheless sound treatments, such as high intensity focused ultrasound

(utilising heat energy to destroy the cancer) and cryotherapy (utilising extreme cold to target the cancer). The patient is advised to discuss availabilities of treatments and the advantages and disadvantages of each. Side effects do need to be considered. These may include sexual problems and urinary leakage issues. The clinical nurse specialist is in a position to further advise the man, over and above the urologist. There are also charity help lines that can assist. For those men whose cancer has already spread by the time of diagnosis (metastatic cancer) the mainstay of treatment is hormonal. This is by way of drugs (or surgical removal of the testes) to reduce the testosterone levels. This is because testosterone fuels the growth of prostate cancer; therefore lowering it stops the cancer in its tracks. There are side effects of such treatment, but these are tolerable. While hormone therapy is effective it eventually fails. DRUGS Where first line hormonal therapy fails, which can be several years down the line, the oncologists have several new drugs in the locker. Such powerful drugs, such as docetaxel, abiraterone, cabazitaxel and others, prolong survival but are unable to cure prostate cancer. Voluntary organisations such as Cancer Black Care (CBC) provide a valuable source of information and support. Such groups are an adjunct to the statutory services and are worthy of support from the community. Awareness needs to be raised in the black community about prostate cancer. Men should be encouraged to get themselves tested annually. Dr Frank Chinegwundoh is a Consultant Urologist in Harley Street, London and Chairman

of CBC.

The Voice of Sport, Rodney Hinds, on what should be a compelling London 2012 Olympic Games IT’S BEEN seven years since the announcement that London would host the greatest show on Earth. The big day is almost here and it is hoped that after all the promises and hype that the Olympic Games deliver. For many they have failed to do so as our early news pages. However, the spectacular opening ceremony will be followed by the sporting action. Team GB will be under pressure to deliver gold on home soil. Christine Ohurugu, Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah and Phliips Idowu are our best bets for the ultimate prize but there is much work to do. For me, 400m ace Ohurugu could well be the story. The local lass – who could walk home from the Olympic Stadium – is just hitting form at thev right time. More crucially, she’s been there and done that having won Olympic gold in Beijing four years ago. One thing that is in doubt that Jamaica will continue to punch above their weight. Usain Bolt could land an Olympic treble again but he has to watch out for talented team mates such as world champion Yohan Blake. Jamaica’s female sprinters will match the exploits of their men folk. Africa’s long distance maestros will take slightly longer to do their thing, but they will do so with swagger. The great thing about sport, and the Olympics in particular, is that while we are aware of many that are competing, new names will be made for their endeavour and courage. London 2012 is set to be another compellimg chapter in sporting history.

Boyle goes Bonkers

T

Kieran Etoria-King

he entire nation of Great Britain rides into August on a colossal wave of patriotism, after Danny Boyle’s awe-inspiring, hilarious, typically British opening ceremony kicked off the Olympic Games on July 27th.

Frankly, I shouldn’t have to describe the ceremony to you - if you haven’t watched it by now, you obviously have little to no interest whatsoever in it anyway. But the long and short of it is, Danny Boyle created a 3 hour event which encapsulated everything about 21st-century Britain, from Harry Potter and the NHS to us teenagers with our loud house parties and horny texting. For once, despite everything wrong with our poxy little island, everyone in Britain was able to wave a Union Jack and say “I am proud to be British” without resembling a BNP supporter. Normally, we Brits love nothing more than a good moan. “It rains too much” is a common gripe. “The police are useless” say several of my friends in the less favourable areas of London. “The buses don’t work” became my catchphrase when I used to commute to school. However, there are a lot of things we take for granted, some of which Boyle highlighted on Friday. Our sense of humour, for example, is admired the world over, as shown by the reception Rowan Atkinson received. For that matter, the entire portrayal of British life was in the sarcastic, satirical style that we do best and are famous for. Boyle also made a huge point of honouring the work done by the National Health Service, a system which, although flawed, is the envy of the world. (Just ask any American how much they spend on health insurance.)

The evening went from strength to strength. Hollywood star Kenneth Branagh was the first celebrity to make an appearance, reading an extract from Shakespeare’s The Tempest - “Be not afear’d, the isle is full of noises” before walking around the stadium in a top hat and overseeing the erection of hundred-foot-tall chimney stacks seemingly from nowhere in an awe-inspiring representation of the industrial revolution. Rowan Atkinson, in character as Mr Bean, was unexpectedly spotted playing the keyboard during the London Symphony Orchestra’s rendition of Chariots of Fire. Even the elements themselves seemed to have a sense of humour, making an empty threat to ruin the proceedings by dumping a few minutes of rain on the stadium at the 11th hour before clearing up just in time for the 9pm start.

Of course, none of this came anywhere near matching the awesome spectacle that was China’s ceremony in 2008. But then, we are not China, and the intention was never to compete with anyone else’s theatrical abilities - Olympic competition is for the athletes to settle. The opening ceremonies are about welcoming the world to your country, and displaying what you believe your country stands for. China went big, we went bonkers.

The biggest surprise, however, came as Daniel Craig, better known as James Bond, was shown arriving at Buckingham Palace in a black cab to collect the Queen - yes, the actual freaking Queen - for a helicopter ride across London which ended in a parachute jump into the stadium. 2012

into a rowing boat at all until four years ago, when she was scouted by a talent program spearheaded by the legendary Steve Redgrave.

In the run up to the Games, the entire world has been pinning it’s hopes on Usain Bolt. However, there is so much more to the Olympic fortnight than the ten seconds in which one particularly fast man runs faster than other fast men, especially from a Team GB point of view. With the track and field events not even starting until the second week, the spectacle goes on elsewhere.

The pair were placed together in 2010, and two years of hard graft later, they are not only Olympic champions, but they are going down in history as figureheads for women’s rowing.

With China and the USA already running away at the top of the medals table, Great Britain had to wait until Wednesday morning for their first gold, but in what historic fashion it came. Helen Glover and Heather Stanning rowed a stunning race in the women’s pair, leading from the very start and roaring away to finish with an entire boat’s length to spare, making them the first British women to win an Olympic gold medal, ever. As if that achievement wasn’t remarkable enough, their individual stories are inspirational too. Stanning is a captain in the British Army, who is due to be sent to Afghanistan next year. Helen Glover, meanwhile, had never gotten

Their success is a perfect example of the amateur spirit which has been at the core of the modern Olympiad ever since its inception. Their victory also came the day after Great Britain’s men had won bronze in the Team Gymnastics. Led by Beijing silver medallist Louis Smith, the young team lost out only to China and Japan to claim Britain’s first Olympic male gymnastics medal in exactly 100 years. The slogan of London 2012 is ‘Inspire a Generation’; if these success stories are anything to go by, it’s already been working. A few hours after Wednesday’s rowing triumph, Bradley Wiggins - at the complete opposite end of the amateur/professional spectrum after his Tour de France win - followed up with Team GB’s second gold, coming out victorious in the men’s cycling road race. of nail-biting, worrying, and empty-venuebemoaning, Team GB was finally on the medal table, for real, thanks to two women in a boat and a man with sideburns. The golds continued to roll in on Thursday, with Chris Hoy leading Team GB to glory in the team sprint at the Velodrome (a victory that sees him equal Steve Redgrave as Britain’s greatest Olympian), Peter Wilson emerging victorious in the men’s double trap shooting, and Tim Baillie and Etienne Scott winning the canoe-slalom. There have been notable stories elsewhere too. 15 year old Ruta Meilutyte beat some of the world’s best to claim gold for Lithuania in the pool, despite...being fifteen. the exceptional Brazil in front of a capacity crowd at Wembley - probably the largest crowd these players have ever or will ever play in front of - to cap a 100% winning record in their group. However, no-one so far has epitomised the Olympic spirit quite like 35 year old gardener and rower Hamidou Djibo Issaka, from Niger. Egged on by dangerously homophonic cheers of “Come on Niger!” and “You can do it, Niger!” from the enthusiastic crowd at Eton Dorney, Issaka finished the men’s single sculls nearly 2 minutes after the winner. Despite being visibly underprepared and in pain by the final 100 metres, Hamidou “The Hippo” Issaka put in a valiant effort to cross the line, and was met with huge roars of approval from the stands. TICKET-GATE

arlier on, I briefly mentioned the scandal surrounding the vast areas of empty seats which appeared at several events during the first few days of the games, particularly the swimming. Having been told that the Games were sold out, the sight of half-empty venues enraged fans who had spent hours grappling with the confusing online ticketing system in vain. As it turned out, these seats had been allocated to sponsors such as Visa, who had respectively failed to fill them.

practically blasphemous error, count to 10 and move on. The one positive of Ticket-gate (Wow, finally a -gate that actually works as a word!) was that the public reaction showed a genuine desire to be involved. The main fear in the run-up to the Games had been that the modern British apathy would lead to a mass of people watching lethargically from their sofa’s, but in fact the enthusiasm and keen interest with which athletes have been greeted has been described as ‘overwhelming’ by several, with the reception of the home crowd leading many medallists to ecstatic tears on the podium.

As someone who usually loves nothing more than a cynical rant, I have been doing my best not to moan about anything to do with the Olympics. So, I’m going to ignore this
