Is it really July already?

I

Debbie and Larry Lieberman, D.D.S.

t seems like we just celebrated ringing in the New Year. The older I get the faster the time goes. Summer plans that we were going to get to are here. Everything we longed for at the beginning of the year has arrived- including the warm weather. Some of you will be participating in graduations or weddings, others will be heading out of town, and I hope most of us will be enjoying outdoor family activities. As we anticipate all of the plans we have for the summer, I’d like to propose that it can be made easy knowing that your dental checklist has been pulled together for you. And

yes, that does sound like something a dentist would say! But seriously, with so many things to think about, it’s easy for the details to get away on you. Here are a few things to check off your list... • Insurance Opportunities - Your dental insurance will likely expire December 31st. Call now to make the most of your benefits this year. Summertime gives us an excellent opportunity to plan your treatment over the next six months. • Back To School- Book your hygiene visits for your kids now ... before school starts. And for college kids, ensure they see us before they end up too far away for care. • Recare - We’re learning more and more about how healthy gums equal a healthy body. Have you had a recare appointment in the past six months? • Esthetics- Do you have dental work you’ve been putting off? Take advantage of the time off you may have this summer to get it done. Do you want to whiten, brighten, and shine up your smile for those summertime photos! Did you know we offer a quick,

easy, affordable way to immediately change and improve the appearance of your smile? The SNAP-ON-SMILE offers a simple life changing solution for many patients of all ages enhancing everything from crooked and missing teeth to an alternative for those not eligible for implants. The snap-on appliance simply snaps in and out over natural teeth. It is made of a strong resin material that looks and feels great. It’s that simple! If you’re looking for something more- the summer is a good time to get started or make a plan for your dental treatment. Give us a call at 727-785-8017 and receive $50 off of your first visit to our office . Now you can check dentistry off your to-do list, then get back to summertime fun! This summer I look forward to spending time visiting my sons who are scattered throughout the country. I hope this summer allows you the time to visit and spend time with your family as well. Wishing you a safe, wonderful summer, Dr. Larry Lieberman

SLIP YOUR ROOMS

Into Something Cool for Summer ROSE BENNETT GILBERT

Q: My grandmother still switches her house from winter to summer. She puts on white slipcovers and takes down the heavy draperies. It’s a lot of work, but the house does feel refreshed and cooler. My grandmother is from the Old Country. Do people still make seasonal changes? Not my generation. A: We have Willis Haviland Carrier to thank for that. He who invented air conditioning has lightened the seasonal load for housekeepers ever since. Actually, Carrier called it his “Apparatus for Treating Air,” when he patented his splendid invention in l906 (soon after winning a master’s in engineering at Cornell University). That “apparatus” not only lets all of us live in year-round comfort today, it has made home life possible at all in extreme areas like Florida, Houston and Arizona. 14

PANACHE VUE’

Still, there’s something to be said for decorating cool, too. Even in these days of “all-season” fabrics, doesn’t it give us a spiritual lift to switch our personal wardrobes from dark and thick and winter-cozy to whites and pastels, crisp linens and summer-fresh gauzy sheers? Visual air conditioning works the same magic in our homes. The living room we show here is cool in every sense of the word. And no wonder: It’s designed by Mariette Himes Gomez (www.mariettehimesgomez.com, one of the most applauded interior designers in the U.S. That she is also an architect (who trained with the likes of Edward Durell Stone) is easy to see in her clean lines, calm colors and the classic style of her furniture, which, by the way, is available through Hickory Chair Furniture Co., an American classic since 1911 (hickorychair.com). Summer-izing ideas to be gained from this room: light colors, uncluttered surfaces and uncomplicated window treatments. Slick and shine, as on the tabletops, effectively lowers the visual temperature, too. Q: What’s cooking in today’s kitchens? A: Open floor plans. Sleek styling. The isolated work island -- it’s all business, all on one level and not at all about coziness and kibitzers, let alone kids doing home-

work while you cook. As seen -- and reported by New York kitchen expert/author/blogger Leslie Clagett, the “modern” kitchen island floats alone, seatless, in the middle of the floor. That’s the news from Living Kitchen 2013, the trend-forward trade show that happens every two years in Cologne. This year, some 160 exhibitors showed off their furniture, design ideas and some way-out technology that may soon be showing up on this side of the globe, Leslie told the New York Chapter of the IFDA (International Furnishings and Design Assn., ifda.com). Innovations to watch for -- or watch out for: the independent work island, (“Go sit in the next room while I cook”.) Hidden cooktops. (push a button to raise or lower to suit your cooking height.) Articulated faucets that dispense chilled water with/ without carbonation. Smart counters that offer recipe advice -- set out whatever ingredients you have and it will suggest dishes that combine them (see Intel’s “OASIS” -- Object-Aware Situated Interactive System). Dare leave the ice cream out, and OASIS will warn that it’s melting. Also in the works: in-refrigerator cameras that look around and tell what you’re running out of. As if we really need another device that’s programmed to be a nag! n

The Eyes Have It body, and my self esteem, but they awoke my inner being and helped me find myself at a young age. This spiritual experience illuminated my path and brought me in touch with a creative energy. That energy empowered me to believe – not in what I, or others saw in the image in the mirror, but rather the inner spiritual energy that defines my soul.

César A. Lara, M.D.

There is a process, an opportunity, that each of us have and by which we can change ourselves and learn to recognize and develop the gift of being unique individuals with common bonds, goals and dreams. It is that uniqueness that brings forth the creative forces that make the impossible possible. These creative forces can transform our dreams into reality, and that humbly makes us aware of our spiri-

tual evolution. It is my wish that as you see yourself in the mirror, you limit your time in looking for imperfections. We all can see our love handles, our belly, and the look we don’t like in some of our clothes. Instead of using the full length mirror, look into a facial mirror, or even better, the rear-view mirror of your car (when the car is stopped), With a smaller mirror, you won’t be distracted by other areas of body imagery. Looking deep into those eyes, acknowledge to your inner spirit how beautiful, intelligent, strong, healthy and sexy you are. It is this awareness that will transform the color of your image not only for yourself but those around you. In the journey of change to be the best that you can be, it is imperative that you acknowledge and become an active participant in your thought development and execution. With the positive forces behind you, you will be able to focus your energies in learning how to eat nutritiously and empower your body’s biochemistry as you shed pounds off and learn to strengthen your body by keeping an active lifestyle. As you learn and participate in awakening your unique gifts and appreciating yourself, you will come to be humbled by the creative energy that will transform your dreams into reality. When you look into the mirror, know that you have the power to color what you see with your thoughts. Learn to live the life that you wish for and don’t let others take control of your thoughts. Take the leap of faith and see beyond the body by looking into your eyes and seeing your own inner beauty. n

hen one looks in the mirror, the images that the eyes perceive and are sent to the brain are metaphorically like drawings in need of coloring. The coloring is done by our psychosocial imprinting, derived by millions of messages that we have been given, and continue to receive, from society and our friends and family. I received such a message loud and clear as a 12 year old immigrant student. On the way home from school one day with my younger sister in Chicago, a gang of tough guys attacked me. As they punched my body and face, I told my sister to run home so she wouldn’t be hurt. As she ran, I saw her tearful eyes full of fear. After I managed to get away and return home, I felt the embarrassment and shame of feeling like a failure to myself and my family. My mom and dad were working hard to feed and support my four sisters and me, and here I was struggling with English, struggling with my grades, and now I couldn’t even defend my family, my sister or myself. I felt that that my life wasn’t worth the sacrifice my family was making for me. I believed at that time the world would be best without me. I was in the bathroom crying, and trying to find the courage to end my agony and leave the world. Suddenly through the mirror, I saw the anguish in my face and swollen eyes. From those eyes, came forth an energy that made me laugh. I laughed so hard that I no longer could cry. In that moment, looking in my own eyes, I realized there was a purpose for me, and I was meant to make a difference in this world. Those thugs may have attacked my

dent signed an unprecedented bill into law that gives Monsanto protection from being held accountable or liable. No corporation in American history has caused more harm or questionable research and managed to wrangle protection from the highest level of government. Many people are fed up with Monsanto, and are getting organized across the country. “March Against Monsanto” is a grassroots effort to draw attention to the pervasive threat of GMOs in our food system and demand labeling and accountability. On May 25, across the nation there will be many small marches and events aiming for these goals:

e consumers really don’t know what were getting anymore when we buy food from a grocery store. Genetically Modified Organisms are so pervasive in our food system that it is very difficult to avoid purchasing or eating them. Foods containing GMOs are unlabeled in our grocery stores mainly because the big biotech giants who put them there fought to keep that a secret from you. For example, the growth hormones from GE organisms known as rBGH, which is given to cows to make them produce more milk, were banned in Europe and Canada after the authorities found out about the health risks resulting from drinking milk from cows treated with rBGH hormones. Some American milk producers started labeling their milk “rBGH and rBST free.” Monsanto, which sells the bovine growth hormones 16

under the brand name Posilac, began suing dairy producers to force them to stop labeling their milk. Monsanto won many of these lawsuits making it expensive and dangerous for farmers to label their products. In addition to most milk products, GMOs can be found in most commercially farmed meats and processed foods on store shelves. In our country, 89 percent of all soy, 61 percent of all corn and 75 percent of all canola are genetically altered. Other foods like commercially grown papaya, zucchini, tomatoes, several fish species, and food additives like enzymes, flavorings, and processing agents, including the sweetener aspartame (NutraSweet(r)) and rennet used to make hard cheeses, also contain GMOs. In fact, most processed foods and fast foods are likely to contain GMOs because of the multitude of processing chemicals and additives. What’s so bad about these GMOs is that they have never been truly tested for their impact on human or ecological health. Additionally, negative side effects have been largely ignored; remember Starlink Corn and how it caused allergic reactions in some consumers? he summer is hot at Suncoast Pilates with beach body slimming workouts in our Pilates private and group equipment sessions and Pilates Mat classes. Joseph Pilates created his amazing system of exercise which he originally called “Contrology”, which has since been called “Pilates” in his honor. Joe, born in 1883, developed his large body of work using By Patricia Welter, B.S. PMA®-CPT, the floor and various pieces of equipLolita San Miguel Pilates Master™, ment he designed (Reformer, CadilSecond Generation Pilates Teacher, lac, Chair, Barrel, Pedi-Pull, Magic Balanced Body Faculty and Circle) during the early 1900’s. He Suncoast Pilates Owner immigrated to the United States in 1926, and opened a studio in New York. Joe was quoted as saying “In 10 sessions you will feel a difference, in 20 sessions you will see a difference and in 30 sessions you will have a whole new body.” The uniform development of muscles and the body form in general is one of the hallmarks of Pilates training. To develop a uniform musculature, which is most attractive and functional, workouts need to be full-body workouts. Workouts should not be about certain body areas. For example, the abdominal muscles have become an obsession in our culture and Pilates certainly is top-of-the-line abdominal exercise; but abdominal work done out of context and without a fully integrated approach to body development is not Pilates and will never produce the kind of efficient, graceful, movement that balanced Pilates training will. Pilates is not just exercise. It is a program of fitness meant to enhance body, mind, and spirit. Workouts should leave one feeling good, better able to accomplish not only the physical the tasks of daily life but able to take joy in living and in play, which Joseph Pilates defined in his book Return to Life Through Contrology as “every possible form of pleasurable living.” Pilates Principles take Pilates workouts out of the realm of general exercise and into the realm of body/mind/spirit integration, one of the goals of Pilates as described by Joseph Pilates himself. The Pilates principles are centering, concentration, control, precision, breath, and flow, distilled from Joe’s teaching. If you do not at least sense an underlying foundation of these principles in the classes you take, you might be doing exercise, but you are not doing Pilates. In addition to Pilates sessions, clients are sweating out the summer in our hot, hot Barre fitness classes. Barre classes utilize the Ballet Barre as the main prop in this standing floor class workout. Suncoast instructors have created their own signature Barre classes utilizing Pilates principles. Suncoast Pilates offers many options to fit your summer lifestyle and needs. Come in and get your summer sizzle on!

on Shepherd is a professional Photographer and Videographer located here in the Tampa Bay area. He has been fortunate to find what he loves to do in capturing and securing history and memories all while following his passion for the last six years. Don didn’t initially choose this line of work. The funny thing is his photography and videography business chose him! Don’s friend, business partner and Future NFL Hall of Famer, Derrick Brooks chose Don. It’s a long story that Don would love to share with our readers sometime, but let’s just say Derrick saw his talent and hired him to work personally for him and The Tampa Bay Storm. Don also volunteers for his Derrick Brooks Charities events, both public and private providing photography and video. Don’s primary company’s focus is to always provide affordable and complete media coverage for all of his clients, no matter how big or small. With so many great photographers not only in the Tampa Bay area but all over the country, Don has been able to create a niche market for himself. “I have been told that I am able to see and capture moments that most would overlook. I prefer to keep it simple and clean with a little twist of flair!” Don lives in the moment and in the day, not liking to think too much about what will happen five or ten years down the road. “I take every day, a day at a time. I am thankful for yesterday and I look forward to tomorrow, but I will make the most of this day!” Although Tampa Bay is home for Don and his family, he has been very fortunate to work all over the world! FLORIDA ORCHESTRA Concertmaster Jeffrey Multer

On a Cultural Exchange Making Music in Havana BY HENRY ADAMS

G

oing to Havana recently was far removed from a vacation scenario in the tropics for Jeffrey Multer. As the concertmaster of The Florida Orchestra (TFO), the visit was part of TFO’s on-going, multi-year cultural exchange with some of Cuba’s major musical and cultural institutions, which included being the violin soloist with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba (NSOC) in Havana’s Teatro Nacional de Cuba this past Mother’s Day on May 12. The idea of traveling to exotic locations is standard fare for professional musicians, but the music always comes first. You may be surrounded by monuments, historic buildings, expansive plazas and other sights, but the main sight for Jeff Multer was his sheet music stretched out in front of him in his room at the Hotel Presidente, that is when he was not in rehearsals at the concert hall. In the U.S., it’s practice, practice, practice and in Cuba it’s “practicar, practicar, practicar.” In rehearsals, Jeff showed a wonderful blend of leadership and a shared sense of comradery and love of the music with his Cuban colleagues. It also provided a chance to renew acquaintances with some musicians who had come to Tampa last fall and meet others for the first time. Everyone worked well together reflecting the positive collaborative spirit that has grown out of the cultural exchange program, all of which resulted in a wonderful concert that week. With Jeff leading the orchestra from the concertmaster chair, the first half of the concert exuded a mixture of charm and lively turns of phrase in a lovely set of chamber orchestra gems: Handel’s “Entrance of the Queen of Sheba” from Solomon; Bartók’s Rumanian Folk Dances and Bach’s Suite No.3. On the second half of the program, under the baton of Music Director Enrique Pérez Mesa, Jeff soared on his violin throughout the bold Romantic passages and the hauntingly rhapsodic moods of Sibelius’ Violin Concerto, resulting in an enthusiastic standing ovation from seasoned concertgoers, music students and others from all walks of Cuban life. Leaving the “culture” of the concert hall to walk the streets of Havana, one is struck by other cultural riches. Ha-

COVER UP SHARON MOSLEY

T

ime to run for cover and check out the latest swimwear coverups that are getting rave reviews on and off the beach. Designers have packed up the tents and pulled up stakes on the cover-ups of the past, launching a whole new way to step out of the pool and join the party. So if you’re not into hanging out in that bikini all day, here are some of the best ways to wrap up for fun in the sun this summer (and not worry about the lumps and bumps most of us encounter along the way)! Start with a dress. Yes, swimwear designers have taken a cue from casual clothing favorites and given us all a way to mix it up this year. That little v-neck knit dress you bought at Gap last year can now be found snuggled between the bathing suits at your local department store. Loaded with color, these little dresses are the hit of summer, and they are as easy to throw on over a swimsuit as they are to wear on their own. Snatch these up in several colors. You can wear them with leggings this fall. Then go long. The maxi dress is another winner of a cover-up this summer. Celebrities are big followers of this trend going with the flow in stripes, ikat prints and geometric designs. Long skirts paired with swimwear tops are another stylish way to layer on a little modesty in mixed company. Add details. Cover-ups have come a long way since the days of the muumuu, and it shows. Beads, crochet and lace are

just some of the ways that cover-ups take on a more glamorous look this summer. Yes, you can wear these tops over your swimsuit or on their own. That’s why you always need to check out the swimwear department now. You may be surprised to see what you find. I found a wonderful beaded top to wear to a summer wedding last year right beside an itsy bitsy teensy weensy yellow polka dot bikini ... and I passed on the bikini! Punch it up with ponchos. There are so many variations on this theme. And you do have to think about just how much you want to cover up to make these work. Sheer tunics that are longer are often a better alternative. However, breezy caftans and kimono styles are also fun to mix and match with swimwear, shorts and short or long skirts. Don’t forget scarves. Think sarongs and pareos are perfect for the beach. Try

to find large scarves in soft cotton -- the batiks from Indonesia are great, but you can also find the decorative scarves in areas that cater to tourists. There are lots of ways to wear these sarongs, but the easiest is to tie them around your waist -- hoping you have swimwear or something else underneath. Or you can tie it above your bust. Or just wear it over your shoulders to dinner over your maxi dress. Have a pajama party. What could be more comfortable than wearing your pajamas to the beach? Some of the best ways to cover-up while soaking up the sun this summer are roomy knit pants -- just like your pjs. For even more fun, try a pair of harem pants. Just pull them up over swimwear and lounge like a lizard. The relaxedfit pants are a welcome change from clingy leggings and capris. Then you can layer with tunics or swimsuit tops. And then you can really let the party begin! n

Bronzers and Braids are HOT for Summer!

Andrew Ashton LaPosh Salon

W

ant to hear about two hot and easy trends for summer? Braids and Bronzer! We are seeing

braids everywhere; from runways to movies and television shows. It is one of the fun ways to change up your hair and makes the most sense during summer months. And braids are not just your three-stranded basic braids anymore. One of the biggest and most popular looks is the fishtail braid. The fishtail braid consists of a two-stranded braid that may appear complicated, simply involves dividing hair into sections. Take a piece of hair from the outside of one of the sections and add it to the opposite side. Keep alternating back and forth until you reach the end of section. Secure the bottom with a band. For a dressier style, pin braid into a low bun or chignon. A couple of things to remember: clean, slippery hair is more difficult to braid so use a little Aquage Detailing cream or rePear Forming Paste to help grip the hair better. Secondday hair is even better. Also, don’t think the braid has to be perfect, sometimes a little messier can be an ideal summer look.

We know how that sun-kissed look is attractive for the summer but getting rays from the sun can cause skin damage in the years ahead. This is where a great bronzer, like Andrew Ashton Faceworks Bronzer, comes in. You want to make sure you are not choosing a bronzer that is too dark, as it may wind up making to your ‘tan’ look fake or muddy. Go for a bronzer that is 1/2 a shade darker than your natural skin tone. Remember we just want that sunkissed look, not to change the overall shade of your skin. Apply to your face with a big powder brush and use circular motions. Start around your hairline and jawline. Without adding anymore bronzer to the brush and again using a circular motion, buff it with rest of face to blend out the jawline inward. Flaunt those braids and a bronzy glow! ou wear sunscreen. You’re diligent about monthly facials. Frown lines? What frown lines?! In the battle against aging, you take advantage of the amazing surgical and non-surgical facial treatments available and you have the youthful glow to prove it. But it’s not your crow’s feet giving away you true age. It’s your hands! Sound familiar? Hands are the most telltale signs of aging, yet we neglect them and, well... it’s showing. Because hands are rarely covered and receive more exposure to harsh environmental elements and the damaging rays of the sun, they usually age more rapidly than other parts of the body. Skin becomes thinner as we age. Loss of fatty tissue, less oil in the skin, and sometimes less flexibility over time, leaves the hands looking shrunken, wrinkled, boney, veined, and discolored with age spots. Not a good look with your ageless face! Here’s the good news: Many of the same procedures used so effectively on the face work wonders on the hands as well. Hand rejuvenation procedures add fullness to boney hands, lighten or rewww.PanacheVue.com

move age spots, and firm up crepe-like skin, leaving hands younger, smoother, and more attractive. Hand rejuvenation can be accomplished in a number of ways. Microdermabrasion is a painless, skin resurfacing that helps eliminate fine lines, and hyperpigmention, while stimulating new cell growth and collagen production. Chemical peels remove irregular pigmentation from sun damage, resulting in smoother, evenly toned, retextured skin. Absolutely amazing outcomes are achieved with laser resurfacing. Lasers target and remove damaged skin in a precise manner, layer by layer. Fraxel Laser, in particular, penetrates 3-5 times deeper than standard lasers, stimulating newer, smoother, firmer skin to form. Even the prominent hand veins that accompany advancing age can be eliminated with little or no downtime, as well. Sclerotherapy, the technique used to remove unsightly leg veins, may also be used to remove hand veins. With sclerotherapy, saline is injected into the vein, lightening the color of the vein and causing it to shrink and eventually fade. And last but not least, injectable dermal fillers

(like Juvederm and Radiesse) work like magic erasers, reversing the signs of aging by adding volume to aging hands and hydrating the skin, making hands appear more plump and youthful. Best of all, results are immediately visible. Typically, a variety of techniques is most successful in turning back the “hands of time”. No matter which combination of hand rejuvenation treatments you choose, you will want to continue to protect your hands from future damage with regular use of sun protection. Consistent use of sunscreen significantly prolongs your improvement! Next to your face, your hands are the most visible part of your body. So, go ahead — add fullness to boney hands, remove unsightly veins, eradicate age spots, and thicken skin. Your younger, smoother, and more beautiful hands will complete an otherwise youthful appearance and keep those ageists guessing! n Call 813.874.2332 for an appointment or visit www.LecadaTampa.com. dow. In our new house, there’s no window wall, and it doesn’t work. It just looks lost against the bare wall. What to do? A: You’ve got to accentuate the negative. Put something important on that bare wall so it forms a unit with your low couch. Give it stature, if you will. A couple of easy suggestions: Stand a tall, attractive screen behind the couch (you can make one yourself from wood shelving boards hinged together and then wallpapered). A variation on that theme: Hang a large tapestry, quilt or other interesting fabric on that wall. Even more dramatic, take a leaf from gifted designer Jennifer McConnell of Pearson Furniture, who turned a ho-hum wall into a focal point, creating visual architecture with a dozen reproduction

woodcut portraits of ancient Roman rulers. The portraits are actually quite small, but Jennifer aggrandized them with oversized picture mats and frames, hung close together so they form a unit over the sofa. Who could resist coming in for a closeup look at the art (from Chelsea House, Inc., chelseahouse.com) and then lingering on the elegant tufted sofa below it? This study in red, white and blue also features classic tufted chairs, benches that prance on little bronze hooves, and a centerpiece of a red ottoman, a surprise stand-in for the usual cocktail table, all new from Pearson Furniture (www.pearsonfurniture.com). Q: What’s a three-syllable word for great design? A: Italy. That’s the considered opinion of veteran editor/designer/trends reporter Melissa Feldman, who took members of the IFDA (Intl. Furnishings and Design Assn.) on a virtual tour of what was happening at this year’s Salone del Mobile in Milan. A lot is happening! And we’ll soon be seeing on this side of the world, Melissa believes. “It used to take years for European trends to make their way to the U.S.,” she said. “Now there’s a rush from Milan to the ICFF (Intl. Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York every spring),” so Americans quickly see what the fuss is all about abroad. Among Melissa’s sightings: neon colors; rotational-molded plastic furnishings (seats and such that resemble the windblown designs by Dame Zaha Hadid, the Iraqi-British architect); pieces made on 3-D printers (FYI, the Museum of Modern Art in New York is selling 3-D printers for home use); revivals of classic pieces that have stood the test of time, such as Alvar Aalto’s 80-year-old bestsellers and contemporary takes on classics by the likes of Baccarat, which showed an unsettlingly off-center version of its traditional crystal chandelier. Besides being a treasure hunt for trend hounds -- Salone del Mobile spreads out all over Milan every April -- Melissa marveled at how seriously ordinary Italians take good design. “Whole families get together and come to the Mobile to see what’s new. That hasn’t happened in the U.S. yet.” n

GREEN LIVING

Giving back in a

GREEN KINDA WAY BY GENE MCDONALD “THE COUNTERTOP ROCK STAR”

I

have been doing Countertops for many years now, which means there will always be leftover materials in my shop. The materials I have the pleasure to work with are too beautiful to send to a landfill. I always love the way I feel when I am helping someone. I can admit I am one of those guys who get a better feeling inside when I am helping someone then when I am not. Whenever a customer is buying a kitchen and baths, I usually suggest having their kids make

28

their own bathroom countertop, the idea is always sold. The kids put in what they want and get to brag to their friends about their seashell and glass mix top. I came up with this similar idea one day staring at about 40 pieces of small scrap that I just couldn’t throw away. A friend of mine got me in touch with CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) http://www.casa-stpete.org/ and I spoke with the organization about my idea for the Holidays. I really got excited about this as my heart felt like a freight train that can’t be stopped. I then cut my scraps into the shape of fish and left the inside open for the kids of CASA to fill up with whatever recycled materials they could find. I set up a work table with the amount of kids who were coming and I was able to give a little ten minute speech to the kids about the philosophy of “Green”. Basically, I helped them understand that what most people may throw away can be turned into very nice things. The kids loved it; they actually understood and were so happy which of course swelled my heart up even

more. I did not have much money to pass on to these charities in which I would love to give too, so I thought I could at least do this in a Green Kinda way to help the kids smile a little more brighter than it did yesterday. After this day the kids learned that not everything you throw away is garbage, they got hands on art training in a shop with their own safety glasses, they expressed themselves with colors of glass, and then in return felt the power of giving back by giving these fish to their moms as a present. That is a multiple winner. I then shared this on Facebook and it was nice that a similar business started this in California. So please if you have a business, STEAL THIS IDEA!!! If you don’t know how to get started, please contact me I will help you convert your scraps into an idea where you too can feel this power of Tampa Bay Love. n Gene McDonald, aka “The Counter Top Rock Star” is the President of Refresh Interiors Design.com. FINANCE

DOES IT MAKE SENSE

to Prepay College Tuition? BY CARRIE SCHWAB-POMERANTZ

Dear Carrie, We just sent our daughter off to her first year of college -- and wrote a big, fat check for her private university’s tuition, room and board. We don’t qualify for financial aid, but the school does offer a program that will let us prepay at current rates. Does this make financial sense? --A Reader Dear Reader, It’s a bittersweet moment when your child goes off to college, isn’t it? You’re proud that she’s making this important step towards adulthood, and you’re heartbroken to see her gone. And if you’re anything like most parents of college students these days, you might be a little sick at the amount of money you’ll be paying over the next four years.

EDUCATION: A BIG TICKET THAT’S GETTING BIGGER

With good reason. Higher education is hugely expensive, and tuition costs continue to rise at about twice the general inflation rate (the government-calculated Consumer Price Index is currently at 3.6 percent). Ac30

PANACHE VUE’

cording to the College Board’s “Trends in College Pricing 2010” report, tuition and fees at private colleges have increased at an annual average rate of 3.0 percent above inflation over the last decade. At public universities, tuition and fees have gone up even faster, outpacing inflation by an average of 5.6 percent annually. Take Dartmouth College in New Hampshire as an example. Tuition for the 20112012 school year is $41,736, a 4.4 percent jump over 2010-2011. If we assume tuition will increase by that amount over the course of the next three years, 2012-2013 will cost $43,572, 2013-2014 will cost $45,490 and 2014-2015 will cost $47,491! If you assumed a 6.6 percent inflation rate (in line with historical averages), the difference would be even more substantial. So what is a parent to do? If you can swing it, one possible way to at least take the sting out of the inflation increases is to pay for more than one year upfront.

HOW PREPAYMENT WORKS

First, I want to be clear that when I say “prepayment,” I’m not referring to some of the original 529 plans designed to let parents of young children prepay tuition at today’s rates -- essentially, an investment to hedge the long-term effects of college inflation. The tuition prepayment plans I’m talking about are generally offered by the institution (mostly private universities) once a student is enrolled. Typically, the terms are straightforward: You pay two, three or four years’ tuition but at the current tuition rate -- reducing your inflation risk to zero and potentially saving you quite a bit of money (in my hypothetical Dartmouth example, paying four years in advance would save you $11,345).

That would be a big check, obviously: $166,944 to cover four years of tuition. Of course, you could invest that hefty sum, but if the money is earmarked for her education, it wouldn’t be prudent to invest it aggressively given the short time horizon. And in today’s interest rate environment, it’s hard to beat the general level of inflation, and even harder to outpace college inflation. Of course, you should check with your school about its policies. Most schools only offer this option to students not receiving financial aid, and the offer only applies to tuition (room and board and other annual fees will still need to be paid, of course, and are still subject to inflation). The biggest concern for most parents is what happens if their child leaves school unexpectedly, but it’s less risky than you might think. Most schools refund prepaid tuition on the same prorated basis as they would a normal tuition payment. If a student transfers between semesters, most schools refund the entire remaining prepaid tuition. Tuition prepayment is a very good opportunity to lock in the cost of a big-ticket expense that is almost certainly going to be more costly in the future. And there’s some psychological comfort in knowing you’ve covered the lion’s share of your daughter’s college expenses in advance.

OR YOU CAN SPREAD TUITION COSTS OUT

Most parents won’t be able to prepay multiple years -- even one year can be a challenge. Many colleges and universities will let you spread payments over the course of a year (typically 10 installments), often with the help of a third-party payment processor. Most of these plans are interest free, although the payment processor typically charges a modest fee for set-up and account maintenance. But be wary, especially if you choose to pay your installments by credit card. The payment processor may charge late fees if you miss a payment, and most charge substantial fees for the convenience of using a credit card (as much as 2.99 percent per transaction). Read the fine print -- and if you don’t see any fine print, call and ask for specifics! (There are better ways to borrow for college costs than using your credit card, but that’s a topic for another column.) I hope your daughter thrives in her freshman year! n

OUTDOOR SPORTS

Most redfish caught during the summer months average between 20 – 30 inches but the larger bull reds will occasionally make an appearance.

Summer

A Great Time to Experience Inshore Fishing

F

rom late April through July, inshore fishing is at its best. Big seatrout and redfish become active as waters warm in the spring and, once temperatures reach into the high seventies, snook become the focus of many anglers. All three can be caught in abundance in the early summer months. The large seatrout tend to thin out a bit as water temperatures move into the high eighties…usually sometime in June, but redfish and snook fishing remains excellent well into the summer. The six or seven days surrounding the new and full moons offer the best fishing opportunities as the big tides seem to motivate the fish to eat. A typical pattern fished by many experienced inshore fisherman is to target snook on the strongest parts of the tides (most water movement) and to fish redfish on the high tides. With a high tide in the middle of the day, a logical itinerary would be the following:

www.PanacheVue.com

Snook, thought by many to be very elusive, are quite abundant and catchable from April through July off of Pinellas County Beaches

fish snook early to mid morning and then again in mid afternoon, and fish redfish in between for 2 – 3 hours around the high tide. Snook gather each summer to spawn in local passes. Spawning aggregations may number from a half dozen to as many as 80 fish. Look for deep cuts or holes in and around these passes as areas that are likely to hold fish. Once snook are located, the best approach is to present live un-weighted baits such as pilchards or grass grunts. If current is present, let the bait drift down current naturally and unrestrained for best results. Be patient. Snook will refuse baits for a half hour and then turn on and eat with reckless abandon for ten or fifteen minutes straight. When targeting redfish, mangrove shorelines, oyster bars, grass flats with sand holes and residential docks represent the best target areas. Although crabs

probably make up the bulk of their diet, redfish will eat just about any fish bait presented to them. Among their favorites would be live pinfish and pilchards, as well as cut pinfish, pilchards, ladyfish and mullet. An effective technique for redfish is to lay baits in against structure (docks, mangrove shorelines and oyster bars) and let them sit until a redfish finds them. A split shot weight is useful for holding the bait in place to prevent it from drifting into a snag. Unlike snook, redfish are almost always aggressive feeders so, if an area is not yielding bites, move. Fish are probably not present. Whether snook or redfish are preferred, summer is a great time to catch both of these species. So before another summer comes and goes, get out and take advantage of this great resource available to everyone in the Tampa Bay Area. n Captain Stewart Ames Gone Fishing Charters (727) 421-5291 www.Tampa-Fishing-Charter.com

TRAVEL & ADVENTURE

Just off mainland Bali, Tanah Lot temple is a favorite tourist destination. Photo courtesy of Barbara Selwitz.

VAST INDONESIA BY ROBERT SELWITZ

T

Is a World in One Country

here’s no place quite like Indonesia. The world’s fourth most populous country, its 237 million citizens occupy roughly a third of the more than the 17,500 islands that comprise this archipelago nation. Tourists flock here for many reasons, including extraordinary animal sightings such as orangutans on Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) or Sumatra and Komodo dragons on their namesake island. But one of the most visited Indonesian destinations is Bali, a wildly popular -- and often wildly overcrowded -- island that draws masses of beach, surf and party seekers. But Bali also draws those wanting to savor the island’s Hindu heritage, particularly fascinating since it thrives in the midst of the country with the world’s largest number of Muslims. Bali’s traffic is a constant challenge, but reaching your destination almost always makes the effort to get there worthwhile. The culture is best experienced at its ubiquitous temples and in surrounding villages. Every town and village has its own temple, and each celebrates two festivals per year,

38

PANACHE VUE’

so the chances of encountering one while you tour the countryside are quite high. Though the temples are definitely Hindu, the difference in architecture between those in India and Bali is striking. Balinese temples are virtually idol-free. And while they are important community gathering places, they are not centers for the poor to pass their days. Among those not to be missed is the temple on Mount Batukaru. Surrounded by a tropical rainforest, it is one of Bali’s largest. It is known for its otherworldly atmosphere because the climate is often misty and drizzly, with shrines covered by moss. The contrast between the coolness of this temple and often-steamy areas below is quite striking. Also visit the Besakih Temple complex, the holiest Hindu temple in Bali, also known as the mother temple. Here there are actually 22 temples, one for each of the original families who first populated Bali more than a millennium ago. One reaches 11 stories, and all are accessible for viewing (but not entering) via rising staircases that can become challenging to ascend.

Much of what you see today is not original, since it was largely rebuilt following a major 1917 earthquake. Because it was spared during the subsequent 1963 event -when surrounding areas were devastated and thousands killed -- it is particularly venerated. Then there is Pura Tanah Lot, a popular coastal temple (pura means temple), quite close to Denpasar. Known for its stunning islet location -- accessible from the mainland only during low tide -- it was originally erected during the 15th century. Much of what you now see, which is best viewed from mainland heights, resulted from massive 1980 renovations that stabilized the crumbling structure. Beyond main tourist draws, some of Bali’s best experiences happen inadvertently. For example, en route to Tanah Lot, our guide spotted a village cremation ceremony in progress. We waited while he talked to local officials who welcomed us to view this amazing event. Thus we were able to see the tower, which carried the coffin in a procession from the village, and the black paper bull into which the coffin was temporarily in-

serted before everything was burned. We heard local musicians playing songs that created an upbeat, definitely non-funereal atmosphere, and we watched as what was supposed to be the cremation of the body morphed into a burial. The reason, according to our guide, was that village elders feared that if the corpse was burned, smoke might float over nearby Tanah Lot, disrupting good works its local airborne spirits might want to do. In Bali, a savvy guide can make experiences of this kind happen. Most will comfortably transport you to major temples, the island’s signature terraced rice paddies, Ubud (once a serene island gem but now overrun by tourists), and to interesting craft shops and markets. We were fortunate to have someone who went beyond the standard script, exposing us to the essence of mystically enveloped Bali. The land-based attractions of the relatively nearby island of Lombok pale by comparison with Bali. Its scenery and Muslim temples are not particularly special. What is special, however, are Lombok’s snorkeling and swimming spots. The seas www.PanacheVue.com

are much calmer, so many flock here to enjoy the laid-back appeals of Lombok’s Gili Islands and other aquatic draws. To the north, in central Java, are the amazing ruins of Borobudur and Prambanan and the dynamic city of Yogyakarta that sits between them. Seven-tiered Borobudur, covered in masterful stone carvings, was erected during the eighth and ninth centuries. One of the world’s largest Buddhist structures, its levels represent the stages of life passed through by Siddhartha, who transformed from a prosperous prince into the Buddha himself. Statues surrounding each level reflect the transition, and at the top there are manifestations of Nirvana, which Siddhartha was finally able to achieve. It takes about an hour to ascend and view the sculptures. It’s a fascinating visit and not overly arduous, but you can only visit with a guide assigned to you upon entering. Borobudur is best scaled early in the morning before crowds, temperatures and -- during the rainy season -- chances for thunderstorms rise significantly. Prambanan, dating to the 10th century, is another massive temple complex, with

the main site dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva. There are also temples devoted to Brahma and Vishnu, and three more honoring the animals that serve each of these gods. Here access is restricted due to structural weakenings following volcanic eruptions. Indeed, climbers must wear hard hats, a good idea in any case since many of the moves one makes during the climb are in fairly tight spaces. All of the temples are covered with intricate stone carvings depicting scenes from the great Hindu Ramayana epic. Personally guided tours to Borobudur and Prambanan should occupy a full day each, in part because there are many other notable sites -- particularly other less-visited temples in small towns -- to experience along the way. Borobudur is 24 miles northwest of Yogyakarta and Prambanan 11 miles to the northeast, so it’s a good idea to resist the temptation to see both on the same day. As for Yogyakarta itself, this bustling urban center has several draws that make it more than a jumping-off place to see nearby archaeological sites. These include the Kraton, the multi-pavilion royal palace of Javanese sultans dating back to 1745. Heavily restored following a 1985 fire and not terribly well maintained, it’s still worth a several hours’ perusal. Also of interest are the 17th-century Water Palace, a former Dutch colonial fort and several museums. Some 340 miles to the northwest is Jakarta, Indonesia’s traffic-clogged but intriguing capital. Mainly a business/government affairs destination, it does boast several fascinating attractions. These include Kota, the city’s poorly maintained old town, where Dutch colonial structures surround a bustling square; the National Museum of Indonesia with four centuries of stunning artifacts; and the city’s bustling port. n For general information: www.indonesia.travel.
