NKRUMAHISM
About this Course Defined as the ideology for a new Africa, consciencism (or Nkrumahism), published 1964, is arguably Dr Kwame Nkrumah’s most critical work. This course is a study of this and the other critical works of arguably Africa’s greatest son. Over two days and four sessions, this program is designed to deconstruct each of the guiding principles of Nkrumahism (i.e. humanism, materialism and egalitarianism) in order to reconstruct them as a body of political consciousness that guide students to a formative anti-imperialist awareness. Students will develop a conceptual understanding of society and federal/nation state, plus develop firm grounding in the development ideas that made Kwame Nkrumah such a threat to the West. During the sessions, students will be encouraged to debate the fundamentals of Nkurmahism on the context of their own world view. The course is also designed that these fundamentals challenge students on what it means to be a Pan Africanist, presenting the often misunderstood technical theories and concepts of Pan Africanism and Pan Africanist philosophy. The course draws on a range of disciplinary perspectives outside politics and economics, including philosophy, trade and industrialisation, history and science. Not only will students be engaged, informed and equipped to theoretically challenge the neoliberal and neo-colonial mainstream and identify policies that serve the economic and political development of Africa.
