Term 1 Student Reporting - Timelines and Updates Today, families will receive student Term 1 reports through email. These reports are fundamental to conversations that will take place in Parent and Teacher Consultations (PTCs). Bookings for PTCs are now closed. In the event you need to discuss PTC bookings, please communicate directly with your child’s teacher. All students are to be congratulated for managing the challenges of remote learning, as are all parents and teachers. For some, adapting to remote learning is exciting and preferred. For most, social connections with face to face learning is favoured and missed. Let’s take the end of Term 1 as an opportunity to reflect and celebrate all levels of learning, adaptation and resilience that has been required by all of our community. Panaga School - Wellbeing for All We are pleased to inform you that Professor Michael Bernard is scheduled for an online talk titled, “Flourishing during difficult times” on Tuesday 7th December. See the brochure in this week’s PSB for more information. We are also pleased to provide you with links to the videos of Dr Angie Wigford’s sessions that have formed part of our series of “Wellbeing for All” presentations: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/14I_EQwVroxve12gEZ_U0M6XENbGD-N7?usp=sharing Thank you for the fantastic contributions of wonderful learning in this week’s PSB. Our pages were swelling so big that you will find more than 30 additional pages of our P7 interview articles and Modern Foreign Language contributions included as hyperlinks. This is our second last edition of PSB, prior to the end of term break that begins on Friday 10th December, when our final edition is due.

Special Edition As you may know, 2 weeks ago Panaga School launched outdoor classroom, with the aim to take students outside to engage in activities that celebrated the outdoors and provided connections with nature to promote health and wellbeing. This is particularly relevant with remote learning currently keeping everybody indoors more than would be usual for most. In Melilas middle years, we offered some great outdoor learning activities that have sustained beyond our outdoor learning week. The following articles about Science, English and Drama reflect the creativity and hard work of Melilas teachers, while demonstrating the dedication, effort and resilience of our students managing their learning. Science During outdoor learning week, pupils in Melilas planted native trees in their gardens. This supported learning targets in Biology, and in particular the current M2 topic on ecosystems and processes. Learning was also linked to the UN Sustainable Development Goals, 13 Climate Actions and 15 Life on Land. Over the week nearly 50 Penaga Laut, Ketapang, Pandan Laut and Ficus saplings were planted around camp by our budding gardeners. All of the trees were germinated from seeds collected around camp over the previous year by Mr Simon and Nick Hoggmascall, president of Panaga Natural Historical Society (PNHS). Panaga comprises coastal beach forest and mixed swamp forest habitats, which are now becoming locally,as well as regionally rare due to coastal land development. It is an important diverse site which relies on continued occupation by local and overseas residents for a stable existence. This was our small contribution to continued management of the vegetation in our local area.

Special Edition English In M1 students had the opportunity to take their learning outdoors to become one of the characters from our class novel ‘Holes’. They wrote, performed and recorded character monologues, making good use of character opinion, emotion, setting, costume and props. In M2 our students completed a novel study of ‘The Hunger Games’. They celebrated the joy of reading and the beauty of the outdoors, simply by reading outside. This process led to the discovery that books are actually as mobile as phones and provide stiff competition in this technological era. https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1F3cxq4AQWwCH_vxs-Ix5XP-ApVyDV1cz

Drama In M1 Drama, students learnt lines and rehearsed monologues outside for upcoming performances. Miss Peta encouraged them to walk and perform on the beach or somewhere in nature where no-one could hear them. This encouraged greater confidence as actors with less inhibitions! Meanwhile in M2 Drama, students got outside and observed nature to explore biomimicry in Costume design: Designing a costume for a character in Suzanne Collins novel 'The Hunger Games', using nature as inspiration.

P6 have been very fortunate to have enhanced our online learning experiences through guest speakers. The Skype a Scientist programme connected us with Dr Holland in Australia, from whom we learnt so much knowledge about how cows and sheep can play a positive role in climate change. The children used many of their Personal Qualities to engage with and ask Dr Holland questions.

Tourist posters of Panaga in French

In French, both P6 and P7 students have been working extremely hard. They have looked at how to look up words in a French dictionary; how to identify if a noun is masculine or feminine; how to put regular and some irregular nouns in the plural form; how to use colour adjectives with the correct masculine and feminine endings. They even completed their first online test and everyone that took part excelled. I am extremely proud of all the students - what they have covered so far has been quite challenging, especially as many of these grammatical rules do not exist in English and they had to do it online. They took it in their stride and have been applying the grammatical rules ever since. They know exactly what article to use in front of a noun, even in the plural form. In the last two weeks, they have been asked to create Posters of Panaga for French Tourists-not only did they have to take photos/draw pictures of Panaga, they also had to describe the pictures using the correct articles (masculine/feminine/plural) and the correct adjective endings. As you can see, the results have been outstanding. Not only have the students been very creative, they have also taken beautiful pictures of what they think represents Panaga. We definitely have some great photographers/artists in P6 and P7. Furthermore, they also showed great computer skills and thought very hard about the layout of the posters. Well done to all the students of P6 and P7. Enjoy the beautiful posters of Panaga in the below link.

Les cartes postales de Panaga - Postcards of Panaga In French, we have been studying the topic ‘holidays’. For the last two weeks, students in Melilas have been hard at work creating postcards of Panaga. We combined the lesson with an ‘outdoor activity’ and they were given a type of scavenger hunt in French. Their task was to go out and take certain pictures of Panaga that would describe their staycation in Panaga, as well as pictures of their own choice. They had a choice of either creating a funny or a serious postcard. Their next task is to actually write about their staycation in Panaga in French. As you can see from the postcards, their staycations have been amazing and students have been very imaginative. If you need to find a good place to eat, a great swimming pool or an hotel, you know who to contact. The postcards have shown that Panaga is full of great food choices, places to sleep as well as different types of swimming pools and activities. I was not aware that there were so many five star hotels in Panaga! PASSEZ DE BONNES VACANCES À PANAGA! Those who say that you cannot have fun in Panaga, are certainly mistaken. Take a look at our postcards following the below link:

Special Edition

Thank you to the Scheck family who have kindly passed on the following physics experiments linked to Christmas, that may be of interest to others. Dear "PiA - Physics in Advent" friends, Under the motto "still 24 experiments until Christmas" we offer 24 entertaining physics experiments to do yourself again this year. Due to the great interest from abroad, physics in Advent will, as in previous years, also be available in English.

Who may take part in Physics in Advent?

PiA is designed for pupils in grades five to ten and from 11 to 18 years of age. However, based on the experience of previous years, parents, teachers, students or those simply interested in physical phenomena also take great pleasure in it. This year, adults in companies, departments and circles of friends are also encouraged to join in as a team and solve the riddle. You can watch a simple experiment every day from 1 to 24 December on YouTube, which you can be easily do yourself using standard household materials. Afterwards you will try to explain the phenomena, with four possible answers. The next day, the solution is available - again via YouTube video. If you wish, the results can be evaluated: individually, for a school class or even for whole schools.

Anyone can register!
