Dear Parents, I hope you all enjoyed a restful and safe half term break. It has been wonderful seeing the children back at school and they have certainly 'hit the ground running'. This edition highlights our animal rescuers, healthy habits, aliens, 'who am I?', the magic toymaker, a pizza party, and job fair (many thanks to the fabulous parents and community members that provided such engaging presentations for our children), female explorers, a digital dance party, the UN's SDGs, Mayan festival, European Language Day, particles and stearic acid freezing, and contour mountains. Congratulations to all of the students that applied to be members of the Melilas School Council. I look forward to seeing what the Council will propose and implement during this academic year. Thank you to those parents that joined our meeting before half term with Mr. Nick Sheehan, CEO and Principal of JIS, regarding the transition to their management and operation of our school from August 1st, 2024. Some of the main talking points were centred around: ● ● ●

Melilas Deputy Principal: Mandy Russell amandarussell@panagaschool.net

Business Service Lead: Cyla Ahmad cylaahmad@panagaschool.net

Panaga School Biweekly Editors: Hannah Zakaria & Donovan Dolamit publications@panagaschool.net

the future of M1 and M2 (this will remain the same) admissions for the school (this will remain the same) curriculum (this will essentially remain the same unless, as in every school, reviews, research and demographics prompt us to look at change) teacher recruitment (we will continue to retain and recruit the best teachers available) collaboration between the two schools (lots of scope for this in terms of management information systems, professional development for staff, access to sharing of specialist staff, student competitions, applications for membership to internationally recognised school organisations etc).

Issue 142 | 3rd November 2023

There were also some more specific questions centred around the current operation of the school e.g. language provision, uniform and these discussions will be ongoing throughout the year. The school will be publishing a Strategic Plan by the end of term 3 and part of this involves a consultation with the parents and wider community over our current operations: I will provide further details regarding this at the start of term 2. As you will see from the front cover of this edition, our PTA coffee morning, raising awareness of cancer, in conjunction with Outpost, was a huge success, with 1057 BND raised. Congratulations and thank you to everyone that attended and a special thanks to those that organised. The PTA are launching a drawing competition for all students with the winners' entries forming the annual school family planner (please find further details within). A gentle reminder to keep an eye on the weather forecast and pack a raincoat for your children, when necessary. Have a lovely, safe and relaxing weekend.

Brian, SLT and all of our staff.

Animal Rescuers

Mendaram Entry Point 1 TO THE RESCUE!

To launch our new IEYC unit, Animal Rescuers’, the children were very excited to receive a phone call at the Animal Rescue Centre to help some cats that were lost or stuck in a tree. The children then took them back to the centre to care for them.

Animal Rescuers

Mendaram Entry Point 2 ‘Tangled’

Another call was received and this time some poor animals had got stuck in some rubbish that had been left in the garden. The children took the equipment they needed and then we talked about how important it is not to leave rubbish lying around.

Finally, the last call came and some animals were stuck in the mud! We hurried to the rescue! The children pulled them out and gave them a good wash. Animal Rescuers, you are AMAZING!

The Aliens Have Landed! Earlier this week, the children in P1 made a strange discovery as they arrived in school. Mysterious footprints had appeared. The children followed the clues to discover a family of Aliens had crash landed in school!

This led to many problem solving and mark making opportunities as the children thought of inventive ways to find one alien that appeared to be missing.

The children will now consider what visitors to the school might need to make them feel safe and welcome.

And will move on to learning more about space and our Solar System.

P2 Entry Point-The Magic Toymaker On Wednesday, we found our classroom locked with a postbox outside and a magical looking key! We received a letter from The Magic Toymaker. He told us that there was a box of toys inside our class but when we opened it, there were no toys, only junk! We realised that we needed to use our minds to make some toys.

P6 Mayan Festival On Thursday 19.10.2023 the great Mayan cities of P6-enitza and P6-Tulum met under the tent at Teraja school, Brunei, to discuss the trading of corn and jade. This ceremony was the result of weeks of planning by rulers, priests, and nobility. Even the craftspeople, farmers and slaves helped to plan and take part in the event. Two weeks earlier, P6-enitza sent a messenger to Tulum, asking to trade their life sustaining corn in exchange for beautiful precious jade stones. Tulum replied by messenger saying that they were prepared to meet at Teraja tent to discuss the trade and maybe make a deal! The two magnificent Mayan cities made their way to the meeting point on Thursday afternoon. Each city loudly played drums and shakers to announce their arrival, as well as chanting their city names. All of Teraja knew about the event. One P4 child commented, “We heard your class on the way to the ceremony. They were so loud, we had to stop reading.”

Once everyone had arrived, the rulers opened the ceremony with their speeches, explaining why they were there and the terms of their trade. Then the bargaining began! Eventually a trade was agreed. In exchange for all of P6-enitza’s corn, Tulum would offer half of their jade. Once the arrangements of the trade were in place there was only one thing left to do to decide if the trade would be made:a Pok-A-Tok match! Scan QR code to watch the festival

Both teams were strong and defiant in the lineup. As the ball was thrown in there was a scramble of bodies as the competitors chased after the ball, remembering that they could only use their knees, elbows and hips. After moving up and down the pitch eventually the Tulum team managed to get the ball through the hoop. The crowd clapped and cheered as they watched the goal. After the match, the priests came forward to make their predictions about the future of the cities and two sacrifices were made to end the first part of the ceremony. As the two cities made their trades and declared peace with each other, there was then a feast of hot chocolate and popcorn to end the ceremony.

P7 - “Halfway there” assembly..

The P7 children performed their assembly to a rock star crowd of parents and children last week. They provided the school with a timely reminder that whilst we are at the halfway point in relation to the goals and their targets, there is still a lot to do. For those of you who missed the assembly, use the QR code bto the side to have a little look. Thank you to all who joined in and made the P7 children feel like real life rock stars!. Together, making a difference!

Celebrating languages in our school On the 26th September, we celebrated the European Day of Language. This is an event which is celebrated across Europe and every year the European Commission run various events. This year, the European Commission ran a competition whereby the students were asked to produce a creative poster celebrating the various languages in the student’s class/school. We had a lot of submission from P4-P7 students. The posters were truly creative and it was hard to find the top five winners.

Our top 5 winners

All the students who submitted a poster received a certificate

Melilas School Council Melilas School Council Elections took place just before half term. After an introductory assembly, interested students were then invited to complete a short application to their form. Positions were popular and all candidates provided excellent blind applications. This was a great opportunity for students to experience the election process and we look forward to sharing the work of the school council with you across the year.
