Dear Parents, It has been so very good to see the children back in school - it almost seems like we haven't had a holiday! I hope all families had time to rest and spend time with loved ones as we celebrated the New Year. 2024 has certainly started off with a bang! School has seen us focus on being artists, dragons have been found, treasures discovered, exploration of our active planet, migration and experimentation with forces! Please read on to discover more. P6 had a wonderful trip to the Malay Technological Museum and Brunei Historical Centre and the School Chess Competition is in full flow. As I write this, we have just completed our Teraja and Melilas Sports Day and what a fantastic event it was. So many great events with the students being the star attraction with their determination and collaboration on constant display. Thank you to the parents that were able to join us and help create such a super atmosphere and our teachers who always ensure the activities are fun and safe. A huge thank you to Mr. Nathan for organising everything including the cool weather! Sports continues over the next few weeks with Cross Country, T-ball and football fixtures. I am delighted to announce that Ms. Sarah, our Music teacher, will be returning to school next week. As you will know, Sarah has been off work following a very serious illness since September and has made tremendous progress since then. Sarah will be making a phased return to work, ably supported by Ms. Wendy (who has been substituting) and other staff, over the coming weeks and months. I know the students, staff, and parents wish Sarah all of the very best on her return. Thank you to the parents who provided valuable feedback on our recent set of reports and PTCs. I will provide a summary of this, and elaborate on our future plans for how we communicate on your children's progress, in a parent meeting before the end of this term.

We are working very hard in the background on the transition with JIS from the 1st August. We will be spending more time this term, communicating the steps we are taking to ensure it is a seamless process. A gentle reminder to complete the re-enrollment process on our new admissions portal, 'Open Apply' by the 31st January. We are in the final preparation stages for our year group Residentials in April and May. I know this causes much excitement amongst the children as we look to provide memorable and safe experiences where students can demonstrate and develop their personal qualities. Further details will be released in the coming weeks. Have a lovely and safe weekend. Best Wishes, Brian, SLT and all of our staff

“I am an artist!”

Mendaram’s Entry Point “I am an Artist” generated lots of creativity and fun. The next day, we opened a Mystery Box with items and information inside to help us learn about Jackson Pollock and create art in his style!

This Term, P3 are using Scratch Junior to create presentations about the Myths they are learning about in English. This week, they started with the Ridgeback Dragon of Brunei!

P4 Entry Point - Treasure P4 learned how ‘treasure’ can be something different for everybody. We loved listening to parents share why certain items are treasures to them. “Treasures don’t have to be old or expensive.”

Issue 146 | 19th January 2024

“Treasures can give us special memories.”

“Treasures can be passed down from one generation to another. We saw a treasure that was 250 years old.”

“Treasures can be items that are important to our religion, culture, family and where we are from.”

P6 visit to Malay Technology Museum and Brunei Historical Centre

During our visit to the Malay Technology Museum, the children learnt about the history of Brunei. They found out about fishing, how homes developed and we were also able to see some of the beautiful craftwork of the people of Brunei.

At the Brunei Historical centre, we learnt about the Sultans of Brunei and the country’s social and political development. As our children return to their home countries, they will be able to share their knowledge of our host country Brunei.

P6 Entry Point: Fairgrounds: Forces Our new IPC Unit is fairgrounds and we will be learning all about Forces. For the Entry Point the children took part in a range of activities that involved the use of forces. Monster Ball The children had to use the small balls to move and control the larger ball to score a goal against their opponents.

Paper Planes The children made paper planes of different designs to see which they could throw the farthest, they also used their own designs!

Issue 146 | 19th January 2024

Marble Run The children rolled marbles on different surfaces to see which marbles would roll the furthest They also investigated what would happen if you rolled the marbles down slopes and how you could make the races fair.

Floating and Sinking Why do some objects float and others sink? Children had fun challenging themselves to make objects float.

Teraja/Melilas Chess Competition This year’s chess competition began this week with 91 children from Teraja and Melilas taking part. Over the next two weeks, the children will play against other children in their year group, with the winner of each year group competition earning a trophy. Following that, the six year group winners will play against each other to determine the school champion. The final game will be held in the Teraja Hall in front of an audience of interested spectators. Here are some photos of the games played so far. I hope to be able to report who the new school chess champions are in the next edition of the newsletter. If you have any chess-related questions, please contact me at the following address - matthewfagg@panagaschool.com
