What a wonderful way to end the 2023/4 academic year. The last few weeks have been jam packed with events, celebrations, and of course, lots and lots of learning: Sports and Maths Days; Language Leaders and Wildlife Warriors; and the memorable P1-P3 production of Jack and the Beanstalk and M2's Hunger Games Physical Theatre Performance. There have been some spectacular Exit Points over the past few weeks and I'm sure you will have seen how much your children have developed, in so many areas, during the course of the year.
There have been lots of parties and celebrations this week, where the childrens' learning and successes have been recognised. It has also been a time to reflect on how this has been achieved and to thank those responsible. The children themselves, are ultimately responsible for their own learning, through developing a range of knowledge, skills and qualities. This wouldn't be possible though, without the unwavering support of you, their parents, and the immense skills, passion, energy and care provided by our fabulous teachers and LSAs, ably supported by our support staff of admin, cleaners, janitors, gardeners and security guards. It is indeed a team effort and we sincerely thank all parents for your continued support. Aspecial thank you to our Parent Reps and our PTA of Maree, Kamila and Kerry, who do so much to help this three way partnership to operate so effectively.
As we complete this academic year, we have also been busy planning for the next academic year. You will have received your class lists this week; lots of time and care is taken to ensure all children are placed appropriately, ensuring there is a good balance within each class. The school calendar can be found here; there will be events and activities added throughout the next academic year but we aim to provide you with, at least, two week's notice for these additions. We are very excited about what next year will bring as we transition to JIS operating and managing our school. Panaga School is such a unique and special place of care and learning; this will continue with a plethora of further opportunities to broaden and deepen children's activities and experiences.
This is also a time to reflect on where the school has come from, since being established in 1948. BSP has built a tremendous school in this time through a significant investment of finance, time and energy. Thank you to the previousAdvisory Boards and Leadership Teams, who provided their considerable expertise and time, in guiding the school in its continued development. Thank you, especially, to this year'sAdvisory Board led by Karl Lenk, and IFM's Lead, Mazlina Maawia, who have done so much to aid the school and navigate us through this transition year.
A final farewell to those children, families and staff that will be leaving us and moving onto pastures new. Your work, support, energy , humour, kindness and passion have been very much appreciated: THANK YOU for everything that you have done to contribute to the continuing development of this wonderful school. Please do keep in touch, remember us fondly, enjoy the new adventures that await you, and take very good care.
We look forward to welcoming all returning and new students and families back to school, when we reopen onTuesday 27thAugust. Have a wonderful summer everyone and stay safe!
Best Wishes,
Brian, SLT and all of our staff

P5 Rainforest Masks
As part of our IPC learning on ‘Vanishing Rainforests’ P5 were inspired to make some tribal masks which reflected elements from nature, colours and Iban patterns.
We invited our parents to come and enjoy our cafe, providing them with time to look at our IPC learning, visit our art gallery to appreciate our jungle masks and animal bakik, as well as enjoying our tribal dances and moving Mother Earth song.
We raised a brilliant $230 from parents donations to put towards our chosen charities; Sun Bear conservation and Orangutan rehabilitation here in Borneo.
Thank you to all our P5 parents for your support and participation in our exit point andallyear.
P6 Weather and Climate Exit Point
As part of our unit on Weather and Climate, we learned about some different ways to join materials. We then wrote step by step instructions and drew labelled diagrams, to design our own wind chimes.
Our success criteria for our windchimes were:
• To look good
• To sound good
• To be strong
We invited our parents in to help us carry out our plans and create our windchimes.
P6 Weather and Climate Exit Point continued
We had to be adaptable and make changes to our design if our first ideas did not work, or if we thought of something even better.
We really enjoyed having our parents come and help us with building our designs and by the end of the session we had a beautiful selection of very diverse wind chimes.

Wildlife Warriors’ visit to P2
On the 11th of June, the Wildlife Warriors (WW) were invited by Miss Sam to lead activities about the wildlife of Borneo. This was perfect timing as two days later our Wildlife Warriors would be visiting SAMSA, a secondary school, where they would be leading the same activities. The activities tied in perfectly with the IPC topic P2 were learning about. It is so lovely to see different year groups working together.
At the beginning, the WW were a bit nervous, However, after a while they got the hang of their activities.
Thank you P2 for having us. Both the WW and the P2 students learnt a lot during this session. Our WW will are definitely ready for Thursday. Can we please come back again next year?
Wildlife Warriors’ visit to SAMSA
On the 13th of June, the Wildlife Warriors (consisting of 28 students from P4 to P7) were invited to SAMSA, a secondary school in KB. Our students led various activities about the wildlife of Borneo, a great way to get other students interested interested in the fauna of Borneo. The idea behind the Wildlife Warrior (WW) club is to make others aware of the beautiful species they have on their doorstep and how important it is to look after them, before they disappear. Miss Steph and various staff from Panaga have visited different schools in the KB area to share the same activities. However, it is much better if children teach other about the wildlife as their words are more powerful and more believable.
For the last 6 weeks, the WW have been coming to Miss Steph’s room on Mondays to prepare for this event, ensuring they knew their activity with the relevant information inside out. Most of the activities are quite challenging and are actually covered in Science and Geography in KS3. Our students also had to prepare for random questions. Furthermore, on the day they had to lead the activities for 196 students from Year 7 and 8, students they had never met before.
The event was held in a large hall and we set up the activities using the carousel approach whereby the SAMSA students moved from activity to activity every 10 minutes. Our WW repeated the activity 8 times in total and every time they would lead the activity with 15- 20 people. Our students were quite nervous but got the hang of it after the first round. We are not sure we would have been as resilient as them at their age. Just imagine being bombarded by a big group of older children every 10 minutes, children who are not native speakers of English. Our students also had to communicate at the right level so that the SAMSA students could complete the tasks..
Many teachers at SAMSA were not aware that our students were so young. They expected much older children to lead these activities. They were simply amazed by our students’ confidence and resilience. This meeting was not only about our WW spreading the word, it was also about our students and SAMSA students working together and building connections. Many of our pupils have never spoken to Bruneian students and vice versa. In the beginning, the students of SAMSA were also quite nervous even though they were much older. At the end of the activities, you could see the students mixing, despite the age gap. Miss Steph has been at Panaga School for nearly 10 years and according to her this day has been one of her highlights since being at the school.
At the end of the activity, the principal had a debrief with our students. Like the other teachers, he was truly impressed with our students and he told them that they were truly inspiring. Mr. Stephen, the principal, hopes that students of his school will join our WW and together visit other schools in the area.
Well done to all the Wildlife Warriors! You are all truly amazing and inspiring. Continue to spread the word, changing the world one step at a time.
Language Leaders
It has been an extremely busy and successful year for the Language Leaders. The Language Leaders programme started 6 years ago and this year we have finally managed to collaborate with local schools. Our Language Leaders have taught French in a secondary school and English as a foreign language in a primary school. They have also led a team-building activity for our P3 students and a local primary school. Two of our students also collaborated with two students from Merangking and together taught a Malay class to a P4 class at Panaga School.
In the second half of the Language Leaders programme, students were also given the option of teaching one of Miss Steph’s French classes, regardless of the foreign language they were learning themselves. Hana and Maya from Panaga with Bella and Ameera from Merangking School teaching P4
Lila, Elena and Camilla teaching P5 French
On the 8th of June, we took M1 LL to SAMSA to discuss future collaborations with SAMSA. We are planning to return on the 12th of October and our LL will be teaching conversational English class to Year 7 students. We would like to congratulate all the students for their unbelievable achievements this year. Also, a huge THANK YOU to Miss Sonia who will be truly missed. The LL programme will be lost without you.
The Hunger Games 2024 have been a huge success! The M2 students have finished their novel study with a BANG! They solved problems from transport, to shelter, to fashion and makeup design to water. It was a fabulous day, enjoyed by all! A special thanks to Mr Matt for his support in bringing the games to fruition. We wish the M2’s all the very best in their onwardjourney.
