A message from the Head Teacher of Rampayoh and Mendaram and the Dutch Stream Though it has been a short term in terms of number of weeks, term 2 has been full of many activities and achievements across both school sites. Beginning with the school expansion, it is fantastic to see the many hours of hard work by several workers’ hands coming to fruition this term with the recent opening of state of the art buildings and facilities on Rampayoh. The new Music/Drama room, for example, is a wonderful room - a wide open space with well-defined acoustics. We have also started using the new Special Needs room and the new Staffroom. The new Library is now being stocked and organised. Pre-Nursery have moved into the Mendaram building and the children and teachers are enjoying their new environment. Once again, a big thank you to all of the workers involved. The Teraja building works are coming along very well and we envisage occupation at the beginning of in April. Brunei National Day was again a wonderful community occasion and a highlight of the school calendar. We were very lucky to welcome and witness St John’s School Choir’s wonderful singing and the Kumpulan PUTRA Seni Theatre Group’s engaging portrayal of traditional Bruneian songs and tales; among just some of the many acts on the day. Plus, our LSAs put on their own memorable performances. Events like these make us very proud to be living and working in the Abode of Peace. Not every day a school is lucky enough to welcome the world’s fastest man on land, however, last month we were extremely fortunate to have Andy Green excite us with a wonderful presentation. Andy will attempt to break his own world record next year and exceed 1000 mph in South Africa. Andy is promoting science in schools and his small tour of Brunei was aimed to encourage children to become more interested in science. Overnight success here at Panaga, Andy! Challenge Day was again a great occasion, this time under the theme, “Movement”. Children and teachers alike across both sites were dancing, bending, maneuvering, testing, sign(language)ing, and jumping all morning; displaying an excellent array of Personal Goals, particularly Resilience and Cooperation. On the sporting pitches, Panaga School has achieved a great deal this term. From our excellent performances up in JIS at the athletics competition to our dominance in the recent BJSL football and T-ball games, to the growth in popularity of touch rugby, we are indebted to the efforts of our PE Specialists, Mr Tim W and Mr Nathan, our many supporting parents, the teachers who assist, and most of all, the children for showing such wonderful commitment and effort. Well done! Speaking of great effort, thanks goes to Miss Teresa for organising once again an engaging and learning enriching Authors Abroad event featuring two talented writers, Nick Toczek and John Row (featured on the front cover). John and Nick’s assemblies, workshops and readings across both school sites not only had adults and children rolling with laughter, but left their minds filled with imagination and inspiration. Finally, just a reminder, school will close at 11.50am on the first day back from holidays - Monday 31st March. Our International Stream teaching staff will be engaged in an equally imaginative and inspiring week of “Talk for Writing” and for the Dutch Staff, ‘1 Zorg route’ training and learning activities. To maximise the training, we intend to run a whole school staff session on Monday afternoon, starting at 12.30pm and running until 6.00pm. This will mean closing the school from lunchtime on this day. School will be open as normal for the rest of the week. So much happening at school as always! Time now though for all children, teachers and parents to have a well-deserved rest. I wish you a very happy and very safe term break! Kind regards, Meino

Andy Green—the world’s fastest man on land comes to Panaga We were delighted to see so many students and teachers attend Andy Green’s events last week. Building the world’s fastest car certainly seemed to interest audiences and we hope that he has been able to inspire more students to study Science. As Andy Green pointed out in his talk, there is a huge shortage of engineers, even in Brunei, and the exciting Bloodhound SCC programme can be an effective means to promote Science. Pre-Nursery Celebrates Chinese New Year

Pre-Nursery enjoyed an exciting morning on 6th February when they celebrated the arrival of the Year of the Horse. Some of the parents from the Chinese community supported the staff in setting up some wonderful activities to enable the children to develop a little understanding of the Chinese culture, and more importantly, to have fun whilst learning something new. The children made beautiful Chinese lanterns, made Chinese cakes with red and yellow play dough and made sparkly firework paintings. They also played some traditional games and watched some dragon dances on the screen and danced along. The children then had a lovely surprise at the end of the day when they found a traditional envelope with a special coin in their tray to take home. Thank you to everybody who supported us in this great morning. By the Pre-Nursery Team

News from our neighbours St John’s School celebrates the Year of Horse St.John’s School, Kuala Belait marks another event of the year, celebrating “Happy Horse Year 2014”. The event started when exciting troupes of two lions entered the school premises in the morning. Thereafter, to the school’s Principal office to perform the dance as well to receive the ‘ang pow’. The two troupes of lions made their way to the school’s multipurpose hall with the resounding thuds of hand-beaten drums. The fascinating event was witnessed by the School Board of Governors, Principal, teachers, students, parents and nine teachers from Panaga School. The troupes performed the lion dance that consists of the ‘sleeping lion’ to entertain the audiences. Later on the lions were fed some oranges, pineapples and salad leaves. It was such an exhilarating, fascinating and spectacular event that everyone enjoyed. This year’s celebration attracted more spectators than the last year’s celebration. Parents did not miss the opportunity to get photographs of the lions with their children even outside the school hall.

National Flag raising at St John’s School It was a memorable day recently for all students of St John’s School, Kuala Belait, when two school prefects raised the given flag by the Kuala Belait District Office that aims to flare up nationalistic pride for the country. The campaign was organised in conjunction with Brunei’s upcoming 30th National Day, with the aim to cultivate and enhance local citizens’ awareness about their roles and responsibilities to hoist and display the national flags during the nationwide celebration. It also aimed to further enhance the respect and affection of the nation’s people towards the national flag, which acts as a symbol representing independence, sovereignty, the people and the country. Besides that, the raising of flag aims to attract youths to participate in activities relating to the solidarity of communities, religious activities, leadership and national identity. The event started when students performed the national anthem, as well as other patriotic song.

P4 Singing Concert The children of IP4 performed a concert in February based on the theme of International Mindedness. This involved songs from around the world sung in various languages. During the performance, children explained the history of their songs and where they originated from. The boys performed a fierce traditional Maori Haka from New Zealand and the girls, a dance from Malaysia. By the night of the show, some of the boys had lost their voices! The artwork surrounding the hall showcased the fabulous painters in IP4, with the paintings representing the idea of ‘opening doors and minds to the world through music’. Thank you to all parents, children and teachers for dedication to a great show!

Panaga School Magazine P5 Concert – Wilbur and the Web

After months of hard work, the week of the P5 concert, ‘Wilbur and the Web’, finally arrived. The children performed the concert three times, two dress rehearsals for the rest of the school and the big finale to parents on the evening of Wednesday, 29th January. The show was a great success with fantastic acting, singing and dancing. The costumes, scenery and props all looked great and everyone involved played their part in making the show so special. Most importantly, as many parents commented, the children really seemed to enjoy themselves throughout. A big thanks to the many parents who helped prepare for the concert by working so hard on the backdrop, costumes and choreography and to Miss Rose and Miss Haniza for all the fantastic displays and props. Thanks also to Miss Sarah for the music, the P5 teachers for directing and organising and, above all, to all the children for their patience and effort. Great job, great concert! By the P5 Team

PTA News

Hip Hop And We Don’t Stop Thursday 9th January saw approximately 350 B-boys and B-girls from P1 to P8 head to the Teraja hall looking extra fly. Thanks to the efforts of PTA hip hop legends, Adrienne Brocklebank and Catherine Fielding, the hall was transformed into an urban wasteland ripe for freestylin’. Mix master Rob De Bree looked the business in leopard print as he pumped out the beats and the Panaga Dance Crew and Gelo Newskool busted some sweet moves and represented with a fully fresh hip hop demonstration. All up, there were three disco sessions running between 4.30pm and 8.00pm, none of which would have been possible without the assistance of the crew of dedicated parent volunteers who collected tickets, distributed snacks and supervised as the children got jiggy wit’ it. The PTA would also like to give a shout out to MC Dave and MC Andy for tearing it up on the mic. By Anna Sanderson

Are Panaga Kids Smart? There is no doubt that there are many talented and hardworking students at Panaga School. They write enthralling stories, solve complex maths problems, master physical challenges, create thought-provoking artworks, make captivating music and put their Personal Goals into action. These skills are extremely valuable but there is more to being ‘smart’, especially here in Brunei. Year-round sunshine is one of the perks of Panaga life but the sun has a dark side. Too much UV exposure from the sun is the major cause of sunburn, skin and eye damage and skin cancer. With this in mind, it is time that we all expand our definitions of ‘smart’ to include being ‘sun smart.’

Sun exposure in the first 10 years of life is a major factor in determining future skin cancer risk. This is why Panaga kids need to get smart about the sun and follow ‘The Outside 5’.

1. Slip on sun-protective clothing. 2. Slop on SPF30+ sunscreen and re-apply every two hours. 3. Slap on a hat that protects the face, head, neck and ears. 4. Seek shade. 5. Slide on sunglasses Hats off to these sun smarties and their sun smart tip: Bare shoulders are commonplace on the Panaga School playground, especially with our girls. A random sun smart spot check carried out on a single day last week found that over 30 children had come to school wearing clothes that did not cover their shoulders! Slip Tip: Say ‘no’ to strappy sundresses, short shorts and singlet tops. Instead, choose loose fitting clothing that covers as much skin as possible.

Check out the next issue of the School Magazine for sunscreen tips and remember that children often learn by imitation. If teachers and parents smarten up about the sun children are more likely to do the same. By Anna Sanderson

Panaga School Magazine A moving Challenge Day on Teraja

All across the school, children and adults alike were shaking to the beat of a wide variety of ‘Movement’ activities to celebrate our second Challenge Day of this school year. The day on Teraja began with a vast array of dances, orchestrated by rock stars, Mr Rorie and Miss Bianca. Children danced up a storm (on both their feet and heads) showcasing their many, varied kinesthetic talents. Most teachers proved excellent exponents of the “Chicken Dance”, however, it was Miss Salbiah and Mr Andy R who were the undisputed “Harlem Shake” champions. After the assembly, children engaged in a kaleidoscope of movement-based learning tasks involving political movements, sign language, forces, art, wind socks and even more dancing - to name but a few. The morning was concluded by DJ Gelo and his Panaga School troop of Hip Hop homeboys and girls spinning us around and flexing our now-aching muscles one more time. The Green team were crowned house winners of the day, but all teams deserve a ‘moving’ round of applause for showing large quantities of Resilience, Cooperation and RESPECT! By Damian Brady

Fruit Fridays in Nursery Along with No Car Fridays, Nursery have now been participating in Fruit Fridays in order to promote healthy eating. The idea is to encourage children to make healthy choices, create healthy eating habits and lead a healthy lifestyle. Most of the children help pack their snack boxes on Fridays with pieces of fruit to enjoy during morning break. We have had apple sauce and creative things such as fruit kebabs. We appreciate your help and support with this and look forward to many more Fruit Fridays.

Personal Goals in Drama Einstein said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. For knowledge is limited to all we know and understand, while imagination embraces the entire world, and all there ever will be to know and understand.”

The Panaga School ASA Drama Club has proven to be very successful amongst students. Even the quietest have taken only a short time to build their self esteem and actively take part in sessions. Students are encouraged to participate in various drama activities which require them to think on their feet and generate new ideas. By using their Personal Goals, children create strong friendships as they laugh, learn and grow together each week! Thoughtfulness In every session, children are encouraged to listen to each other's thoughts and ideas and take turns. When children work closely together in small and large groups, they learn the importance of considering each other’s feelings. Adaptability During drama classes, students work independently as well as together to learn the process of creating actions which they produce into a performance. They learn to improvise and practice quick-thinking solutions to problems in role play and respond imaginatively to a range of pretend scenarios. Communication During drama classes, children actively engage each other. They learn games, songs and participate in ‘pretend play’ taking on the language of the character or role they are playing. Children are encouraged to express themselves verbally, through facial expressions and body language which are essential skills to making them more effective communicators. They also improve voice projection, fluency of language, articulation of words and persuasive language. Resilience Children are provided with plenty of opportunities to take risks in class and perform for an audience. This teaches children to trust their own ideas and abilities and improves self-confidence. Performing in front of a large audience is never easy for anyone! Respect Children are encouraged to act out various roles from different situations. Putting themselves in others’ shoes promotes compassion and tolerance for others’ feelings and viewpoints. They also use their active listening skills to be a respectful audience. Morality Children are exposed to many different acting and thinking activities which encourages decision making and enables them to explain their actions. Thinking about their choices and developing moral standpoints enables them to be sensible and do the right thing. Enquiry Children have a natural curiosity and by acting out different scenarios and emotions in a safe, fun environment they are able to find out and learn new things. Each week, we explore a range of themes and introduce children to different, real and imaginary situations, sparking their interest in the world in which they live and making them more inquisitive. Cooperation During Drama class, students’ creative ideas flourish through the processes of discussing, negotiating, rehearsing and performing. Students learn to work together to make decisions and enhance the effectiveness of their overall performance. Drama turns ideas into creative actions! By Miss Nicole

P2’s Celebrations This term, the Primary 2 children have been learning all about the different celebrations people commemorate around the world. It all started on our IPC Entry Point day where some parents came in and showed us how they celebrate the Hindu festival of Diwali. The children played musical instruments, designed their own Rangoli patterns and even ate some traditional food!

As the term went on, the children learnt about many more celebrations. We first looked at Chinese New Year and the children made Chinese Masks, acted out the Chinese New Year story and choreographed their very own Lion Dance! We then went on to learn more about Diwali and the story of Rama and Sita. This led to the children making their very own Diwa lamps out of salt dough and using paint to decorate them. Next, we learnt all about the festival of Eid or Hari Raya as it is also known. After our trip to the local Mosque, Church and Chinese Temple, the children produced some stunning ‘silhouettes’ art work of the different places of worship to a sunset background. By weaving coloured paper, the children also produced their own Ketupats which took time and Resilience but were a great success! By the P2 Team

Panaga School Magazine Shell Schools Mascot Project

Our intrepid travelling Hornbill and Panaga School mascot Feathers has been having a ball. He spent Christmas in Australia AND America. He first went to America where he met Alyssa’s dog. It was an encounter he was lucky to survive. Once recovered, he then headed to Australia where he got to visit lots of cool places like Ariel's Grotto in Port Campbell and Lorne Beach. He even got to go snorkeling and meet some of the locals. Now in Russia, Feathers was getting into the spirit of the Winter Olympic Games. He has been ice skating and even been playing ice hockey on a recent trip to Zima with his new friend, Miron. In winter at Zima, they flood the outside tennis court and basketball courts to make ice skating rinks.
