Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear School Community, Residentials As we progress through Term 2, our students and teachers in P5 to M2 are preparing for the beginning of Term 3, where we will offer a unique learning context through our Residentials experiences. Residentials are embedded in our school curriculum. It is for this reason that students’ participation in our Residential programmes is expected. A variety of parent information sessions and correspondence have been offered to inform parents of planned programmes, links to the curriculum and logistics. We have a previous history of all the locations for P6, P7 and M1 trips having relevant accreditations. In line with BSP HSSE guidelines, we review and conduct up-to-date risk assessments of all locations prior to the trips and all trip leaders are currently involved in organising these. Once completed, final details and consent forms will be sent out by all teams, as mentioned in all parent information sessions. Our P5 students work with the British Army Garrison, as they participate in a Survival Night that is school-based. P6 will visit Kota Kinabalu, P7 - Kuala Lumpur and M1 - Singapore during the week beginning 15th April. All three of these Residentials will have members of the school’s leadership team in attendance. I will remain in Panaga, on call throughout this Residential Week. As mentioned, the relevant accreditations of these P6, P7 and M1 Residential locations have been deemed fit for purpose. M2 students will attend their Residential in Brunei, the week beginning 22nd April. The logistics of this Residential will require high levels of independence and interdependence of students, in the way of cooking and cleaning for themselves. Students will also visit a range of local businesses that demonstrate the creativity and culture of local people.

A follow up pre-visit to finalise this programme will be conducted by 11th February. It will be soon after this time that a parent information damianbrady@panagaschool.com session will take place for the M2 Residential. I will also attend M2 Residential.

If you wish to discuss any of these Residential experiences further, in the first instance, please speak with your child's class teacher.

Updates from the Principal’s Desk School Nurse Panaga School will gain a School Nurse in the near future. This valuable school staff role is currently being advertised locally. The role of the school nurse will be to support first aid, assist with teaching and learning in line with health education topics and support families with child health related matters, including immunisation. Our school community will be kept informed accordingly of our progress as we pursue the addition of a School Nurse to our staffing.

School photos This week, Kristy (our PTA Treasurer) and Alex (Panaga kite surfer extraordinaire and volunteer school photographer) teamed up to create exceptionally high quality class photos. Kristy and Alex worked together, as a dynamic duo, over the course of two days to provide families with these wonderful keepsake photos. Photo purchases will generate funds for Panaga School's Parent Teacher Association (PTA) to operate from. All of the sand pits, gardens and most of the toys used at playtimes are the result of continued PTA funding. In addition, periodic larger purchases, such as the (currently in design phase) timber cubby house for Mendaram, are also made available to the school as a result of our PTA. Parents are able to place orders for class photos through either school office over the next two weeks. Tremendous thanks again, Alex and Kristy, for your efforts with class photos.

Thank you parents, from all staff At the end of 2018, parents worked together to offer thanks to school staff for the work they do every day by gifting a range of snack items. This has proved to be a gift that keeps on giving. Thank you to our school community for this kind gesture, which has gone a long way to fuel Panaga School staff, particularly when staying back for late evening meetings and when energy levels are dropping.

What an exciting event we had on Tuesday afternoon, our local community sale. A massive thank you to everyone who helped us with this project. The proceeds of this sale will help fund a garden project that the P6 children are helping Pusat Bahagia with and the possibility of an outside physical activity space that P7 team are supporting. We loved the creativity of their artwork and we enjoyed their visit to our school. Also, it was a good opportunity for us to use our Personal Goals; it helped us to communicate more with the people and show our respect during the sale. It enhanced our learning as well, especially in Maths, with all children working out the correct bill and change needed. By P6MM

Learning from our community - kitesurfing in school P1 were lucky enough to have two of our community kitesurfers come and visit on a rainy Friday last week. Eva shared a video with the children before we all went outside to look at the equipment that she and Alex had very kindly brought to show to the children. The P1 children behaved beautifully and sat and listened most attentively as they were told about the equipment, the safety aspects and how to kite surf and wakeboard.

The children then asked some questions before being offered the chance to have a go on the boards. Some of them took to it like naturals and really got into the swing of it. A big ‘thank you’ to Eva and Alex for sharing one of their passions with the P1 children. By the P1 team

International Mindedness: Learning about Our World in Brunei P2 had an exciting and experience-filled visit to the Belait Museum in KB this week. If you have never been, you must go! Located at the end of Jalan Maulana, at the junction with Jalan Sultan and opened in 2016, this museum is housed in the former British District Commissioner’s residence. This modern museum offers insights into the indigenous communities of the Belait district, the history of oil and gas in the region, colonisation in the area over the past centuries, and artefacts of cultural importance. The natural history of Belait is showcased with special exhibits of the local flora and fauna of the area: birds and mammals, shells and plants. A special thank you to Miss Mariani, Public Relations Coordinator of Brunei Museums, and her staff, who made this fantastic visit possible. By the P2 team

What an amazing way to end ‘Jungle Week’ last week. Middle Years and Pre-Nursery came to Nursery to all join in with some fun activities and the grand finale, ‘The Jungle Dance’! Middle Years painted animal faces on the children and taught them some cool new moves. A fantastic way for the oldest and the youngest children to learn from each other. The Hornbills of Brunei Last year, on 26th January 2018, the first ever Hornbill Day was celebrated. Around this day, 11 years ago, the first Oriental Pied Hornbill chicks hatched from a Panaga nest box, donated by BSP and PNHS. Around Panaga, we can see a lot of Oriental Pied Hornbills. However, did you know that Brunei actually has 8 species of Hornbills? Two of which have been occasionally spotted around Panaga. As you can see from the pictures below, each species is quite different in their colouring.

They do have a lot of things in common as well, one of which is that they are slowly disappearing from our planet. Apart from the Oriental Pied Hornbill (least concerned), they are either nearly threatened, vulnerable, ‌...endangered or critically endangered.
