Currently, PTA class photos are on sale. Approximately 200 class photos have already been purchased. A reminder to secure a copy of your child’s class photo by visiting one of our school offices with your $5 Principal: payment. Updates from the Principal’s Desk Adopt-A-Beach Panaga School congratulates and thanks The Last Straw committee for their work in launching the Adopt-A-Beach campaign. Panaga School staff and students have adopted three designated areas, with school representatives signing pledges at this week’s launch to commit to two years of regular cleaning and maintenance of these stretches of coastline. Term 3’s After School Activities (ASA) programme is set to include a rotational beach clean session for all groups. School Community consultation, risk assessments and consent processes are underway in preparation for this initiative to become embedded in our school operations. Many staff have already attended the adopted stretches of beach to make a positive impact, ahead of our Term 3 school launch.
All members of the community are reminded that the Panaga Club has available all required equipment for volunteers to conduct their own cindybintahal@panagaschool.com clean ups of the beach at any time. Gong Xi Fa Cai Children from Teraja and Melilas and their parents led school celebrations for the Lunar New Year last week. The occasion is celebrated by more than 20% of the world’s population and is one of the biggest holidays celebrated throughout Asia.
Students shared traditions that families take part in during the holiday, and performed a traditional tale from Ancient China. The assembly ended with rather a lively and colourful lion dance from local lion dancers. By Jackie Campling, ANT Department

Panaga School supports ‘Adopt-A-Beach’ project On Wednesday evening, Panaga School pupils, parents and teachers were out in force to support The Last Straw’s 'Adopt-A-Beach' initiative. Families representing all sites, Mendaram, Rampayoh, Teraja and Melilas, were on hand to assist in collecting over 70 kilograms of waste in just 30 minutes! The Adopt-A-Beach programme aims to keep the beaches of Panaga beautiful by allocating a section to those committing to regularly clean it with their families and friends. The children were particularly proud of their role in creating a better, and safer, environment for coastal wildlife. Mendaram and P1 have been working with Reef Check to learn more about the ecology of the oceans and its protection. Through IPC, children in P2 have been learning about habitats, the impact rubbish has on sea life, and how we can all be agents of change. Well done to the children of Panaga School for setting an example as environmentally responsible citizens. And a huge appreciation for The Last Straw campaign who initiated the Adopt-A-Beach programme.

We went on Safari! We had a fabulous day in Mendaram last Thursday when we went on Safari as a part of our IEYC unit, Animal Rescuers. We spotted the Big 5; elephant, leopard, lion, buffalo and rhino.
We made our own jeeps to drive around in. After our Safari, we hopped back on the plane and arrived at Nursery in time for snack! By the Mendaram team

Did you know that Brunei has three types of langurs? Maroon Langur The Maroon Langur is also known as the Red Leaf Monkey. As the name suggests, this monkey mainly eats leaves. It does however also consume large amounts of flowers, fruits and seeds. It has huge chambered stomachs, like that of a cow, which helps it to break down and digest its food. It lives in troops of 2-13 individuals. The troop is led by an alpha male. It is arboreal, spending most of its time in the canopies. It hardly comes down to the forest floor. Photo by Shavez Cheema
Silver Langur The Silver Langur (also known as the Silver Leaf Monkey or the Silvery Lutung) lives in big groups led by one alpha male. It is a folivore, eating mainly leaves. However, it does also eat fruit, seeds and flowers. Infants are bright orange for the first three months of their lives. This is so they can be easily seen and be protected by the rest of the troop.

The Hose’s Grey Langur is a very rare species and is endemic to Borneo. It mainly lives on a folivorous diet. This means that it mostly eats leaves, but it will also eat fruits, seeds, flowers and eggs of the Grey-Throated Babbler. It normally lives in small troops of 6 to 8 individuals. A troop contains one adult male and two or three females and their young. It is threatened due to habitat loss. It used to be hunted for its meat and bezoar stones. A bezoar stone is a hard indigestible mass of material, such as hair, plant fibres, or seeds, found in the stomach or intestine of animals. Bezoars were formerly considered to be antidotes to poisons and to possess magical properties. Written by the Wildlife Warriors

Recycled Art Contest launched at local school On Saturday 9th February, a team of Panaga teachers and students, with the support of Marie McCready from The Last Straw Group, presented an assembly to the children of Sekolah Rendah Panaga about recycling. We invited them to take part in the Recycled Art Contest that was launched at our school on January 18th 2019. The message given to ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ was received with lots of enthusiasm. We can’t wait to see their competition entries and will share the top 3 winners, following our next visit to judge on 9th March. It is great to see collaboration on shared initiatives throughout our wider school community and we look forward to building on this new partnership between schools.
We want you to create a piece of art from waste You need to: create artwork using clean litter – it can be flat or a sculpture in 3D. Make sure it is selfcontained and safe to be left standing up. All winning pieces will be displayed at various locations throughout the Panaga Community. Please include the following on all artwork: 1. Name; 2. Age/class; 3. Explain what you used and why (e.g. a sculpture built using 20 yoghurt pots – A Week of Yoghurt – the number of plastic pots one family gets through in a week). Closing Date: 15th March (All entries to be handed in to your class teacher) Prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd Places will be awarded If you have any questions please speak to either Miss Claire or Miss Louise in Mendaram. Learning all about SCUBA with Mr Menno
We need to go up!
Look out for the shark!
The P1 children were very excited to have a visit from Mr Menno, as a part of their Sand and Water IPC learning. Mr Menno brought all of his Scuba equipment to show the children. The children were very attentive as he explained all of the equipment and how it worked. He even let them try some of it on. He showed them his diving knife…which was very exciting. Mr Menno and Miss Jo had a ‘Scuba conversation’, with the hand signals they use when they are diving. The children practised a few and then showed Mr Menno that they had remembered them all. Thank you Mr Menno for teaching us. By the P1 team

P1 Making Monsters
To support the Talk for Writing unit, ‘Defeat the Monster’, the children in P1 have been designing and making monsters. The children each came up with a unique and interesting design. By following their design carefully, the children were able to apply all the skills they have been taught about joining materials to create their own monsters. They displayed great resilience and cooperation along the way. Well done P1 on you fantastic monsters! By the P1 team

Community Sale @ Panaga School, 29th January 2019: 22 bags SOLD!
P6 students preparing the stall
Students from P7-M2 came together in our Textiles ASA, to create reusable drawstring bags from 100% recycled materials. The fabric was sourced from donated clothing and the logos stenciled onto repurposed bed linen. Quality control was tight, but after a whole term’s work, the busy students managed to sew an incredible 40 finished bags. 22 bags were sold at our recent Community Sale. There are now just 18 ‘Limited Edition’ bags available from the glass cabinets in the reception area of the Panaga Club. The bags are a great alternative to the plastic fruit/veg bags given freely at supermarkets, and are suitable for takeaway food orders from the club.
P6 will use funds raised to build a garden at the Pusat Bahagia Learning Centre, Kuala Belait. Priced at just $4, they are handy to have with you every day. I hope you will support us with this worthwhile initiative by buying yours today! By Miss Josie & Mr Zaim Art & DT Department, Teraja and Melilas
