Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Bad weather and safe travel to school In the event of inclement weather, parents and guardians are relied upon to make decisions that keep everybody safe. When lightning or severe storms present at home times, teachers and staff will intervene to stop students from cycling or walking home independently. If a storm is present at your child’s home time, adults are encouraged to collect children from class as soon as arriving at school, to assist with a staggered departure. This helps to reduce car park congestion. If bad weather presents at drop off time, we urge you to take your time and stay safe. Your family’s safety is our highest priority and if this means being late to school, we would prefer that this is the case than an accident, injury or worse.

2019/2020 staffing and class arrangement planning are underway. A significant variable in a company school such as Panaga School is the transient nature of our students. We ask that families please assist this process by informing the school office of planned departures as soon as possible. Thank you for your assistance with this matter. Next Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Meeting The next PTA Meeting is on Thursday 20th June at 7pm, in the Teraja Staffroom. This group of volunteer parents and teachers generate community projects and funds for school enhancements. Leslie Mennie, our PTA Secretary, and her family are soon to depart Brunei. We thank Leslie for her years of service and are looking for a new Secretary at our next meeting.
Panaga School Weekly editor: All are welcome. Hope to see you there. Damian Brady damianbrady@panagaschool.com

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk One of the most wonderful aspects of Panaga School is the diversity of our students. Living in an expat community allows us not only to be immersed in the Bruneian culture but also to experience other vibrant nations from around the world. As a school, we look to embrace this diversity and allow the children to share their own experiences with each other. Recently, a number of our parents visited P2 to share various celebrations from their home countries. It was wonderful to see the children asking so many questions and learning new songs and customs from around the world. As a part of this experience, we are now preparing for our upcoming International Day on 28th June. This in an opportunity for the school community to come together and celebrate each other’s heritage and culture. So far, the following countries will be represented: China, Ukraine, India, Pakistan, Spain and Latino countries. If you are interested in celebrating your country and culture with the school but have not signed up yet, please contact: hannahzakaria@panagaschool.com. There will be the first of three pre-event meetings next Wednesday 22nd May in the Rampayoh Meeting Room at 8am. If you are interested in representing your home or another country, please come along. Kind regards, Mark

International Schools Assessments (ISAs) results and reports P5-M2 classes sat for their ISAs in February. This week, students were finally able to see how well they performed as ISA reports were issued. We are very proud of our students overall performance in the tests this year. Panaga School averages are above the ‘All Schools’ average, reflecting good results in all of the four domains assessed: Mathematical Literacy, Reading, Narrative Writing and Exposition. The results were shared with parents during a parent information morning on Thursday 16th May. If you were unable to attend but would like to view the results and presentation, please visit: www.panagaschool.com/assessment-reporting - Perminder Sanghera, Deputy Head Teacher, Teraja & Melilas

Pre-Nursery welcomed many new families this week as we hosted our first Stay and Play session for our 2019-2020 Pre-Nursery cohort. It was wonderful to see these young children happily playing as they got to know their new environment. Stay and Play sessions give your child the opportunity to meet other children from their year group, and allow our teachers to get to know the children. They also help you as parents to meet and make connections as you become part of Mendaram community. There will be two more sessions to help with the transition process: Monday 20th May and Friday 24th May from 9.00am-10.00am. If you have a child who will turn 3 between September 1st 2019 and August 31st 2020 and have not yet signed them up, please speak to Miss Zu in the Rampayoh Office. By the Mendaram Staff

Up, up, up
Pre-Nursery had great fun exploring and investigating balloons!
We kept them up in the air in PE, we travelled with them to far away places, we found out that they can pick up little bits of tissue paper if you give them a rub, we built a balloon hovercraft, we witnessed a balloon rocket zip across a string and we relived the story of The Blue Balloon.

On Monday 13th May after school, the P4 team (Miss Jo, Mr Steven, Miss Susanne and Mr Menno) went to the Old People’s Home in Seria to finish the garden area for the residents. They worked tirelessly for over 3 hours laying slabs around the concrete area created by IFM. The whole team demonstrated great resilience and adaptability to learn a new skill.

It was wonderful to see so many parents join P5’s Exit Point last week. Children exhibited their spectacular artwork based on rainforest tribes, using their preferred medium. As a part of the unit, we looked at what we can do to help save the world. Children discussed with their parents changes they could make at home as a family. There were lots of fabulous suggestions. Let us know how you get on! By the P5 Team

This week, Miss Amy and Miss Laura were joined by The Lion King Props and Computers group from Rampayoh and Lego Robotics club from Teraja. Working together, they were able to collect over a dozen bags of rubbish! Next week, Mini-Chefs (Rampayoh) and Board Games (Teraja) are adopting an area of beach to clean in their ASA time.
Remember:
Make sure you have completed the Permission Form.
On the day, bring hats, sun-cream, bug-spray and water bottles.
Children are to be collected from their normal ASA location.
