Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Greetings from Utrecht in The Netherlands. I generate this week's Updates from the Principal's Desk while attending Shell NXplorers’ "Increasing Creativity by Exploring Keys to Success" Conference, which has followed a Shell School Principals, Head Teachers and Fieldwork Education session. As mentioned in last week's Panaga School Weekly, creativity is important for both Shell and our planet, as the world aims for renewable energies and sustainable global developments. NXplorers is a Shell education programme that encourages creativity in young people to address these needs. Shell NXplorers is embedded in practice throughout Melilas’s curriculum. "NXplorers is an innovative educational programme that introduces young people to the complex and creative thinking needed to bring about positive change." nxplorers.com/en
Shell NXplorers offers Melilas children an integrated curriculum and active citizenship, where all Specialist teachers in our Middle Years work together cindybintahal@panagaschool.com to share their expertise and offer coaching and mentoring for our students to own their learning and drive it forward. Across Terms 2 and 3 during Global Citizenship lessons, Melilas students developed sustainable Panaga School Senior initiatives and products for our local community. Using Shell NXplorers Administration Officer: problem solving strategies and the UN Sustainable Development Goals, Jalinah Bte Ali students worked in teams to explore common sustainability issues, to (+673) 3375728 create solutions to change the world we live in. email: jalinah.ali@shell.com

The community is invited to attend Satu Impian (One Dream) on Saturday 22nd June, between 10am and 3.30pm, at KB Sentral Shopping Centre, where outcomes from this learning will be presented through a business market, performing arts spectacular and short film festival. Attendees at this week's Shell NXplorer Conference include Dirk Smit (Shell Vice President Research Strategy), Oleksiy Tatarenko (Shell Strategic Projects Manager) and Rahul Singh (Harvard University Professor), as well as many other reputable education leaders and professionals that make up our intimate group of 38 participants.
Panaga School Weekly editor: Henk van Hout (Head of Shell Education Services), Robin Belles (Shell Damian Brady damianbrady@panagaschool.com Schools consultant) and Theresa Forbes (NXplorers creator) are also amongst participants at the conference and all are very aware of Melilas's Satu Impian work. Henk and Robin have observed this learning in action. I am delighted to report back to the Panaga School Community this learning is held in very high regard by these international education leaders. Harry Brekelmans (Shell Project and Technology Director), who has been a significant supporter of Shell NXplorers evolution, also joined for some of the conference. Henk and Harry informed those in attendance of the work taking place in Banglore, India, by Shell to create renewable energy, prominently produced by using waste, with recent success in fueling cars.

In addition to the conference focus on Shell NXplorers, keynote speaker, Professor Kyung Hee Kim, presented her newly reported findings of the correlation between high academic results and levels of creativity. A desirable and necessary element in teaching and learning to enable students to reach their full potential is creativity. Professor Kim (pictured above with one of her final slides) uses the Sun, storms, soil and space as metaphors for learning, suggesting that with the right conditions, creativity will be ignited to produce unique and useful or effective results.

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk This week has been another busy week across the school and the children have once again been fully engaged in their learning. As the half term comes to an end, I have been enjoying the delights of our IPC Exit Points. This week, I was invited to a ‘Mini-Bug Ball’, where I was able to observe a wide variety of bugs and insects dancing to a selection of bug songs. Who would have known how well Ladybirds and Preying Mantises can dance when given the opportunity? I was also invited to a fashion display from the wonderful future designers in P3. We clearly have a lot of talent in the school. Across the school, these Exit Points take place at the end of each IPC unit and they are a wonderful opportunity for you to engage in your children’s learning. Whilst the topics may end in school, they are just the starting point for children’s curiosity and imagination. Please do allow them to explore further and learn together. Thank you to parents who attended the International Day meeting this week. We are all looking forward to a truly global event on Friday 28th June. If you were not able to attend but are interested in setting up a stall or working with others to celebrate our diverse and wonderful community, please contact hannahzakaria@panagaschool.com. Or come and speak directly with me. Kind regards, Mark

P1’s Beautiful Bug Ball Exit Point On Monday, 21st May, the P1 children prepared for a ball. They planned and made their costumes using all sorts of different paper, glue, colours, fabrics and lots and lots of tape. After an hour of hard work, where they showed lots of resilience and cooperative skills, they were ready to welcome the Nursery children to share in their parade and listen to the songs they had learnt. The Nursery children came in and paraded before watching the P1 children proudly show off their costumes. They then performed an insect song, led by the children from P1A, and then along with all the adults sung the “Ugly Bug Ball” song and joined in with the actions. The children had a wonderful time dancing and showing their classrooms. They then returned to the P1 snack room, which had been decorated with all of the 3D bugs they had made. They collected their Beautiful Bug placemats and sat down for snack. After finishing their snack, they had a treat of wiggly worms, bee biscuits and some chocolate kisses. What a wonderful time we all had at the Beautiful Bug Ball. By the P1 Team

Panaga Club Arts and Crafts Section supports P2 learning P2 were warmly welcomed at the Panaga Club Art and Craft Section recently to learn about scrapbooking, as a part of our IPC Celebrations unit. The children were able to learn how to make paper craft which could be used for a book cover, or as a picture frame for their favourite celebration photograph. Hanim Ghaffur was on hand to teach the children techniques of design, paper folding, cutting and stamping to create unique designs. Children carefully considered their themes and made creative works of paper art. An enormous thank you to the members of the Arts and Craft Section for opening their doors to our Panaga School children and offering them the opportunity to use this beautiful space. The children were proud of their work and expressed interest in doing more Art at the Panaga Club again. The Art and Craft room is definitely a hidden treasure within our community. P3 IPC Holidays Souvenir T-Shirt Exit Point On Tuesday 21st May, P3 children, parents and teaching staff enjoyed an exciting and entertaining IPC Holidays Exit Point in Rampayoh Hall to celebrate our IPC Holidays learning. This Exit Point modelled holiday-themed souvenir T-shirts that our P3 children created. To gain ideas and inspiration for this creative project, the children first looked at holiday-related T-shirt designs from around the world, then set about developing their very own original designs. As a part of a rigorous 9-step process, the children initially created four different designs from which they then selected one to go forward. Among the challenges they faced was to be able to incorporate bubble writing. These designs, with images and themes spanning the planet; from London to Louisiana, Jerudong Park to Universal Studios, Mexico to Malaysia and points in between, were presented ‘to the world’ during this Exit Point when the children got to model their own T-shirt creations in front of a packed house. The results, as you can see, were imaginative and colourful, and very wellreceived by our P3 parents who got to see first hand their P3 children modelling their own creations on the catwalk, to warm applause and wide smiles, putting Calvin Klein again on notice!
