Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Matilda’s story Prior to the last school break, Matilda (P3R) talked to me about a goal she had set: to climb Mount Kinabalu. Matilda went on to explain that she was going to try her best, give it a go and just see how far she gets in the climb. At school’s return, Matilda casually informed me that she had in fact climbed all the way to the top of Mount Kinabalu (pictured above with her father at the summit). I praised Matilda for her ‘have a go’ attitude, the resilience she showed throughout the journey and belief in herself. She giggled and said words to the effect: “You sound just like my Dad, he is so proud, he just keeps telling everyone!”

Principal: Cindy Bin Tahal (+673) 3372355/8777028 email:

Matilda, I am so proud of you too. Your achievement is very impressive. I may also be a bit like your Dad, as I find myself telling everybody too.

IFM - thank you This week, the Integrated Facilities Management (IFM) leadership team conducted a seatbelt check and weekly team meeting at Rampayoh. Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Dear Parents, As you are all aware, on next Friday 28th June, we will have our annual International Day celebrations. Thank you to all parents who have volunteered to be involved and are busy preparing various items for the events. We do have some very talented and creative individuals in the community. If you are still interested but have not come forward, please do come and speak to me as soon as possible. There will be a final meeting this coming Wednesday 26th June. This week, we were delighted to welcome the team from IFM to our school. As a part of their role across the community, they have been observing the safety of our children as they travel to school. Following their visit, can I please remind parents of the following rules to ensure the safety of everyone travelling to school. 

All passengers - children, parents and other adults - should be suitably restrained in the car using the correct safety belts.

Children should not undo safety belts until the vehicle is fully stationary.

If you are running slightly late, please do not speed through Panaga or the car park.

In addition, can I remind parents that the drop off zone on Rampayoh closes at 7:40am when the bell rings. Any parents or adults arriving after this point are requested to park their vehicle and escort the children into school. The safety of all of our school community is so important to us and these simple steps can make a huge difference. Mr Mark

17th June 2019 Rampayoh and Mendaram staff and children all took part in our first Outdoor Classroom Day to celebrate and inspire outdoor learning and play. During the day, teachers commented on whole classes and year groups that were excited to learn and children taking the lead with their learning. We saw children collaborating and communicating their ideas prior to carrying out their research outdoors, the ‘big questions’ that came from the children were very deep and inspiring. Play is not only central to children’s enjoyment of childhood, but teaches critical life skills such as problemsolving, teamwork and creativity. As a staff, we have been discussing and learning how we can develop our environments and teaching and learning to support a more play and inquiry based approach.

On Monday, Nisa Halim and Marie McCready from ‘The Last Straw’ met with the cleaning and maintenance team at Panaga School. Nisa Halim presented information about how everyone can do their bit to have a positive impact on the environment.

It was great to see everyone engaged and sharing their own pledges, including using reusable containers for take-away, turning off lights and ACs not in use and disposing of waste responsibly. Have you made your pledge yet?

During the past two weeks, the Nursery children have been learning all about safety on our bikes, in the car and when walking around camp. Last week, we held a bike clinic and parents came in to check the children’s helmets as well as the tyres and brakes on their bikes.

This week, we went on a walk around camp. We practised our mantra - STOP, LOOK, LISTEN before we cross the road. The children were amazing. They walked holding hands, they listened to the adults and were super observant, noticing all of the warning signs along the way. Many thanks to the Security team who also helped to make sure we were all safe.

Last Thursday, the children in Nursery learnt about the Hari Raya celebration. Hari Raya is a festival to celebrate the end of a month of fasting for Ramadan. During Hari Raya, Muslims will visit their mosque and then return to their family and share a meal together and exchange gifts. For children, Hari Raya is a very exciting time; they enjoy wearing special clothes and eating delicious treats while spending time with their families. Thanks to Fatimah’s Mummy and Zahyaan’s Mummy for making our Nursery Hari Raya celebration so special.

Dinosaur Experts Our Early Years IEYC unit is ‘Dinosaur Detectives’ and P4 came to visit us this week to help the children with their dinosaur learning. In PreNursery, they told stories and researched about dinosaurs. In Nursery, we made models from junk, Lego and play dough and drew pictures of dinosaurs. In P1, they looked at skeletons and made dinosaur footprints in clay. Thank you so much P4, you really are experts and we learned so much. We hope you will come and play with us again!

This week, Miss Amy and Miss Laura were joined by Small World and Role-play ASA from Rampayoh and Scottish Dancing from Teraja.

There was lots of rubbish after the high tide. The children needed lots of teamwork to pull up rope buried deep in the sand and were able to collect more seeds for Miss Aly’s collection. Great work everyone!

A massive thank you to all the children and adults who have helped with the beach clean this term.
