Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Disco Fun for young and old took place in the Rampayoh Hall this week at Wednesday evening’s school disco. Many thanks to staff and parents who volunteered to run this PTA event. Particular thanks to Miss Rosie, who led the entire event.
Middle Years The Middle Years at Panaga School is growing in age and size. Almost a decade ago, Panaga School introduced the first year of Key Stage 3 (National Curriculum for England, Year 7). Excellent high school teachers in this area of the school have been maintained to grow this programme into what is now M2 (National Curriculum for England, Year 8). Students in Melilas are offered personalised learning through high school specialist subject expertise representing all curriculum areas. Incredibly high teacher ratios to Principal: low student numbers also continue. From August 2019, Melilas teacher to Cindy Bin Tahal student ratios offers 1:7 in two M1 and two M2 classes. Miss Josie will lead (+673) 3372355/8777028 the Middle Years from August 2019, continuing a Middle Years handover email: and seamless leadership transition since September 2010. There will be a cindybintahal@panagaschool.com Melilas Parent Information Evening on Monday 1st July at 5.30pm in the Teraja Hall. This event is aimed at parents who will have children in Panaga School Senior Melilas next year, however, everybody is welcome to attend.

Reporting to parents This week, end of year student reports were sent home to families. Each child’s learning journey is unique. The learning process is cyclical in nature, rather than a linear pathway. End of year reports assist to formalise communication from teachers to parents about progress taking place for each child. Conversations between parents and teachers are crucial to assist each party to understand and support children in their learning. Formal parent teacher consultations are not scheduled at this time of year, as it is understood that many ongoing conversations are already taking place. Parents are invited to reach out to class teachers and Melilas tutors directly to book parent consultations. Thank you to our teachers who have committed hours of work to provide personalised and detailed end of year student reports for families.

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Dear Parents, As I write this article, preparations for International Day are in full swing. Tables are being planned, cultural dances are being practised, quizzes are awaiting completion, passports are ready to go and the odours of food preparation fill the Panaga air.
Over the week, I have had the opportunity to discuss the event with a number of children across the school. Whilst the food does seems to be the one thing all of them wanted to discuss, they also shared how much they enjoy learning about different cultures and understanding more about each other's countries. The international community they are growing up in allows an opportunity for a true uniting of the world beyond borders. I would encourage all of you to spend time beyond International Day sharing tales of your homelands along with embracing the diversity of our wonderful world with your children. More photos of today’s exciting event will appear in next week’s newsletter. Following on from last week's safety visit from IFM, we have been delighted to observe more children and adults strapped up safely on their journey to and from school. To continue our focus on road safety, can I please remind parents to only park in designated parking spaces in both school car parks. In addition, concerns this week have been expressed by cyclists on the designated cycle path, with the increase in drivers using the driveway of Number 49 for U-turns. Please can we avoid this at all costs. A number of our youngest children use this route and ensuring their safety over an extra few metres to the roundabout is clearly more important. Mr Mark

A message from the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) President Dear Panaga School Community, It has been a wonderful year in the Parent and Teacher Association (PTA), with the most amazing team who constantly offer their unwavering support. These enthusiastic, creative and relentless supporters of the PTA consistently volunteer for the benefit of our children and their place of learning. One of our aims as a PTA has always been to raise funds so that we can provide support for projects which are geared towards further enriching the experiences of our beautiful kids in the school. This year, the PTA organised a Movie Night which was thoroughly enjoyed by all of our kids as they strode in with their precious soft toys and cushions, ready for a very different experience at school. The School Disco was another of that kind, with the kids (and adults) dancing with reckless abandon. The PTA calendar was very unique, with a lot of hard work going into producing and selling them. Might I add that we have some really talented photographers here in Panaga. The class photo was an initiative welcomed by many to raise funds for our various suggested projects and to have as a memento for all of our kids. With our combined effort, we have been successfully able to raise funds to provide support for projects as diverse as furniture purchases, sand play toys, balls, skipping ropes, significant gardening projects, a pool table and an animal cam in this school year. On a personal note, I have enjoyed being part of the PTA team and would like to thank each team member for enthusiastically giving up their free time in support of everything we do. The PTA committee has been outstanding, thanks to Lesley (Secretary) and Kristy (Treasurer) for all their help. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank Lesley for all the hard work she’s put in as she will be leaving at the end of the school year, while we welcome Sarah Harrison, as our newlyelected PTA Secretary. Lesly (pictured) was thanked at our end of year PTA meeting for her years of service to the Panaga School PTA. Lesley offered comment that of all of her volunteer roles in the community, her work with PTA was one of the least demanding, yet very rewarding, as she could see the benefits for children and felt greater connection to the school. If you would like to get involved with the PTA, please get in touch with Kristy, Sarah or me. The PTA comes together on an average of 3 times a year, with smaller sub committee and focus groups working together on various initiatives set at the beginning of the school year. Please come forward with all of your brilliant ideas and observations to inform us on how we can make the school a better learning place for our kids. All ideas are appreciated and will be looked into by the PTA. Our first PTA meeting in the new school year is Thursday 19th September in Teraja Staffroom at 7.30pm. All are welcome! On behalf of the PTA, we hope you have a wonderful holiday and look forward to seeing you all at school’s return. Warm regards, Olayinka Idowu PTA President

The children from P4 visited the Old People’s Home in Seria on Monday 24th June to officially open the quiet garden area that has been our main community project this year. We were joined by the team from IFM2 who helped to create the area and Mr Steve Phipps who built the beautiful outdoor furniture.
Everyone enjoyed the songs sung by Mr Menno’s ASA group.
Cards were given to the residents and to IFM.
Everyone enjoyed the delicious food brought in by the P4 children.

Language Leaders
Language Leaders at the start of the course
Since December 2018, 16 students from M1 and M2 have participated in the Language Leaders Award. It is the first time we have run this course at Panaga School. Normally this course is aimed at Year 9 upwards. However, I felt that our students would have no problem completing this course as their language knowledge is amazing for their age. In order to take part in the course, they had to fill in a Language Leaders application form to explain why they would like a place on the course and why they think they would succeed and achieve this award.
Groups introducing their starter activity for the very first time
The course helps students learn to lead, using language teaching as a medium. Throughout the programme, they developed their leadership and linguistic skills, growing in confidence and enhancing their future careers. In small groups, the students prepared and taught either a Spanish or French lesson for P1.

During the course, the students have realised that it is not easy to prepare for and teach a language lesson. They have micro-taught parts of their lesson before and received feedback from myself and fellow students. They quickly came to realise that every step of the lesson needed to be thought of carefully, from creating the actual activities to delivering the lesson. Before they taught their lesson, we visited P1 and they observed me teaching Miss Louise’s P1 class. At the end of the lesson, they gave me constructive feedback including things they thought I could improve on. Last Friday, after hours of preparation, it was finally their turn to teach. Suffice to say, they were very nervous, even during the dry run with me the day before. Group 1: Zacky, Olivia, Molly and Finlay This group decided to teach family members in Spanish. They introduced the family members using a song they found on the internet. Whilst teaching the words, they introduced a hand gesture for each word. In the end, the P1 children could say the words whilst they showed the gestures.
Group 2: Aliza, Lotam, Elisabeth, Olanna and Akshita This group decided to teach 6 colours in French. They also used hand gestures with the different colours. The plenary took place in the garden. They shouted out the different colours and the children ran to the right colours.

Group 3: Raymond, Pepijn, JJ and Ruby This group also taught the colours in French. In the starter, when they introduced the new vocabulary, they took their time going backwards and forwards repeating the different colours. For the main, they played the ‘yes/no’ game where they would say the right/wrong colour and the children responded with yes or no. Group 4: Lauren, Lucy and Jessica This group taught the colours in Spanish. They really thought about their audience by creating a Powerpoint using the ‘Mr. Men’ characters to engage the children from the start. They finished their lesson with a ‘Dora the Explorer’ song, celebrating the learning of the new words. All groups prepared a proper lesson, starting with an introduction to the new language. This was followed by various main activities to practise the language. Every lesson finished with a plenary. To ensure the children remained engaged, all of the plenaries took place outside in the playground where the children had the opportunity to practise the language whilst running around. Every member of the group had to lead an activity.

Language Leaders with their P1 classes
Miss Louise giving feedback
Whilst the students taught their lesson, Miss Louise, Miss Jo, Miss Amy and Miss Sur filled out an observation form, especially created for this course. There are various categories they will be graded on such as subject knowledge, pace of lesson, use of resources etc. At the end of the lesson, each group received constructive verbal feedback from the class teachers. They all received their T-shirt for completing their lesson the day before.
They were all truly amazing. The P1 teachers were very impressed with their delivery and resources. The P1 children thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and all learnt new words in a different language. They will soon receive a written report and a certificate. Well done to all the students who participated in this course. I am extremely proud of them all as they all showed true leadership skills and perseverance. Thank you to P1 for having us, especially Miss Louise for helping with the organisation.
