Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Dear Parents, Welcome back to another action-packed half term at Panaga School. The children have returned refreshed and eager to learn more. This week, for many of the children, new topics have begun and it has been wonderful to observe the excitement of new learning and the wonder of the children as they learn new knowledge, skills and understanding as they explore the world around them.

Class photos

A reminder that this coming week we will be having out school class photos. These will take place on 4th November for Rampayoh and Mendaram and 8th November for Melilas and Teraja children.

Toy Makers and a “Day in the life”

I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the enthusiasm within P2 and P3 grow as they begin their new IPC topic. P3 are busy learning about the jobs people do and several times this week I have been pinned down by a team of interrogators armed with an Ipad and notebooks to grill me on my job and why I do it. P2 have received letters from the Magic Toy Maker and have been busy communicating with this mysterious person across the week. They thoroughly enjoyed making new toys to send onto them. We look forward to watching their learning and enthusiasm grow in the coming weeks.

Fun in the Pool

This week, our P1 students had their first swimming lesson at the Panaga Club. It was a delight to see them enjoying themselves and demonstrating so many of our Personal Qualities throughout their time at the pool. The children enjoyed meeting their new coaches and all look forward to next week’s session. The ability to swim is often something that we take for granted but it is such a vital life skill for people. Each and every child showed their willingness to enter the pool and whether they were new to swimming or experienced swimmers, they all demonstrated resilience throughout. - Mr Mark

Community News: Autism and ADHD awareness workshops and events The Army Welfare Services Community Support Team at the Army Garrison is running a series of workshops and events to raise awareness on Autism and ADHD in the local community. These will be led by Dr Annie Clements, UK Founder of the multiple awardwinning Social Enterprise Autism & ADHD. Annie has over 30 years’ experience in working with young people, families and communities around living with disability and has been involved in several research programmes that have changed the lives for the families she passionately fights for www.autismandadhd.org. They are holding an informal coffee morning and conversation about the subject at the Chit Chat Community Centre at the Garrison from 1000am-1200pm on the morning of Wednesday 27th November. This is for any families wishing to meet with Dr Clements and chat about any questions they may have. Annie will talk through common issues in a short and easily accessible way. Being the mother of 3 autistic children herself, she has a unique insight into how to support, work with and value children with additional needs. Annie has a strong message on the value of inclusivity and community and will be available for discussions on a range of support strategies. This service is provided free of charge. We would encourage any families in all communities who wish to know more about what can be a very emotive issue to attend and meet with Annie.

Pre-Nursery Entry Point Enter “THE MIGHTY FREEZE” We found two interesting boxes in the classroom and a letter from someone asking us to look after it and then...OH NO...in came the BIG FREEZE. He waved his magic wand and made us all freeze. We danced and he made us freeze. The MIGHTY FREEZE played a trick and hid our boxes. When we were unfrozen, we searched and found a trail of snowflakes which we followed and HORAAY, we found our boxes.

Where can the boxes be?

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-One, 1st November 2019

Inside the boxes, we found Super Hero masks and craft items, so we decorated our masks, ready to be SUPER HEROES! By the Pre-Nursery Team

P1 IEYC Unit: Blast Off! This week, the children in P1 were amazed to find a space rocket that had crash landed in Rampayoh. Thanks to the information provided from three P7S students (Jules, Sam and Tom), we were able to quickly locate the ship. The children were keen to rebuild the broken ship once they found the alien family that was stranded in our classrooms. The aliens had kindly made a space workshop for P1 to aid rebuilding the space rocket. It was all hands on deck with protective space clothing and rocket designs being brought to life. The children can’t wait to learn more about Space with their new friends, ‘The Starbeam Family’, to help.

In P3 we have been finding out about two artists, who play with shape and contrasting colours, to create optical illusions.

As we made our own artwork in a similar style, we found ourselves using a lot of mathematical language.

I can make two triangles out of a square!

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-One, 1st November 2019

How many edges does my star shape have?

These are squares, even though they are tilted onto their sides.

I made my heart shapes by folding the paper in half and then cutting, because hearts are symmetrical.

I have only used circles to make my artwork.

P4 had an exciting week working with different year groups. We cooperated with P1 to create collages of the Personal Quality animals and we showed resilience when P6 came to teach us how to make origami hearts. In the IPC assembly, we communicated a song through sign language.

The M1 pupils practised their measuring skills in Maths when they were tasked with estimating and measuring the dimensions and perimeters of objects. By conducting this kind of practical work, it helps the children to develop frames of reference for standard metric units as well as encouraging them to start thinking about reasonable levels of precision and accuracy. It also has the advantage of allowing them to take their learning outside the classroom.

The M1s have also been enjoying solving maths problems posed on the interactive displays in the Melilas area. Here, they had to place the all of the numbers in the correct columns and rows according to their properties. To make the problem extra challenging, they had to first decide which column and row headings should go where. After a lot of discussion, reasoning and perseverance, they cracked it. Well done! - Mr Paul
