Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk This week has been another fun filled and action packed week for the children within the school. There has been so much for them to enjoy. P4 enjoyed an active Entry Point for the new IPC topic this week and it was great to see so many parents get involved. The children have thought carefully about their activities and demonstrated excellent cooperation in running their events. Although, I do think that many of the activities were simply designed to either get people wet or test you to the limits of your fitness.

Practical Mathematics

Visiting classroom within school is always an enjoyable experience and this week I was fortunate enough to be in P3 Maths lessons. The children were keen to demonstrate the skills they have been learning and it was good to see them using a variety of practical equipment to help them complete a series of addition questions. Providing hands on experiences for children is a vital part of their learning and allows them to visualise number concepts which can often be abstract. I would continue to encourage you to use practical maths at home to help develop your children’s skills further.

Weekly Safety Focus - Animal safety As a community, we are so fortunate to live in such a unique and diverse environment. On a daily basis, we encounter wonderful wildlife and observe animals within their natural surrounding. As a school, we are keen to ensure that the children are aware of not only how incredible this is but also the need to be vigilant and to keep safe when we encounter these animals. We regularly discuss this topic with your children and would encourage you to do the same to ensure all of us are kept safe.

Simple tips to help your children 

Don’t stare or scream at the animals.

No wild or sudden gestures, such as hand waving, stick shaking, etc.

Adult supervision is important to ensure safety of the children.

Keep calm and back off slowly.

Thank you PTA Huge thanks to the PTA for generating cash to fund a wide range of playtime equipment for the children to enjoy. The new equipment purchased this week includes footballs, mud kitchen utensils and equipment for the sandpit on the Teraja playground. BSP Fire Department visit Mendaram as a part of our IEYC unit, ‘To the rescue!’ On Thursday 21st November, PN children had the opportunity to meet a real life hero! BSP Firefighting Crew came into class and talked about their job as a firefighter. The showed what special clothing they had to wear and equipment they use. Next, we went to see the fire truck and learnt how to hold a hose nozzle. The firefighter crew helped us to climb on and off the truck. They finished each group’s tour of the truck with a siren and light display. We sang songs about driving a fire truck and made a fire truck pictures.

Celebrating Diwali in Pre-Nursery We would like to thank the members of our Indian community that invited us to join in with their Diwali celebrations. They decorated the classroom beautifully and then spent time with the children explaining the story of Diwali.

We ended up receiving lovely gifts to help us join in the celebration.

Thank you to Mr Jaiye and Mr Mike who came to class to help us with our knowledge and understanding of the Ancient Kingdom of Benin.

We created a little museum with a range of sources. We had to examine and evaluate different sources of evidence about Benin and say what they can teach us about Benin culture. Posters

We are developing our understanding about The Ancient Civilization of Benin and are starting to see connections between this civilization and the Mayans. By Maura Murphy

Melilas Updates

- Josie Kidd, Middle Years Leader

The Middle Years students from Panaga School will run a Sustainability Market as part of this event from 3pm - 5pm on Sunday 1st December at BSRC. Each student has developed their own stall to raise awareness, promote or sell products and information around the theme of sustainable living. The older students have created a 'Be the change' calendar and a photographic exhibition that will also form part of this event. The Middle Years students have been working tirelessly over the past few weeks in their Design and Technology lessons, ASAs and at home, to create products and experiences that will be thought-provoking to all that visit the event. We hope to see you all there.
