Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community,
Issue Forty-Five 29th November 2019
With only 2 weeks left of Term 1, learning continues to take place in many forms, while Panaga School and Community calendars remain packed with various events.
Panaga School
Cross Country Unfortunately, due to the torrential rain overnight, the BJSL Cross Country was cancelled this morning. An average team of 30 students on Tuesday and Friday mornings before school had been training for this event. Special thanks and acknowledgement to Mr Nathan and Miss Perminder, who led these sessions and helped contribute to a love of running for so many.

We are currently investigating an alternative date to offer this event. Satu Impian Do yourself a favour and head to BSRC this Sunday for Satu Impian - a fantastic Eco Festival for all of the family. This event is a Future Energy Lions initiative, in collaboration with Panaga School, Melilas staff and students. We wish our Melilas students well, as they present and sell their prepared Design and Technology learning products at this event. Panaga Kids Carnival The Indian Section are hosting a Kids Carnival this weekend also. There is a lot on offer, however, the organising committee are still looking for storytellers to share folk tales from their country. If you are able to support this request, please contact indiansectionpanaga@gmail.com or WhatsApp Vikas on +6738273701 for more information. Thank you to the Indian Section for providing such a wonderful opportunity for the children of Panaga and wider community. Beautiful Borneo 2020 Calendars Do yourself another favour and purchase a copy of this year’s Beautiful Borneo 2020 Calendar. It features high quality photos presenting the unique wildlife of Borneo. These calendars cost $20 each, with every cent generated given straight back to the many initiatives of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) school enhancement projects. It is on sale now at our school offices. A reminder of next week’s Parent Coffee and Conversation event at 8am in Teraja Staffroom to discuss this year’s International Day and plans towards a Swimming Gala with Coach Gianfranco.
damianbrady@panagaschool.com Wishing everybody a wonderful weekend. There is a lot on. Well wishes also to those celebrating at Santa’s Grotto. Regards, Cindy

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Another busy week has flown by within the school and the children and teachers are in full flow. Every lesson I have visited this week has been so engaging for the children and the knowledge and skills the children have developed over the term is so evident in conversations with the children and the work they are producing. Children do develop so quickly and each of them have made such progress over the term in their overall understanding.
This week, I was met with a number of sad faces in P1 who informed me that the aliens that had been visiting them have now returned home. P1 did such a fantastic job repairing their ship that they were able to leave. We hope they will return to see us all again. Standardised testing Over the past few weeks, children from P2 upwards have been completing a series of standardised tests in Reading and Mathematics. The results of these will be shared with you in children’s upcoming reports. These tests are a vital part of our school assessment to ensure that the children are performing at the expected level, in line with students across the world. The test are then used to help teachers plan and to ensure your children are given the correct support they need to develop their skills further.
Weekly safety focus I would like to bring to your attention the need for safety and respect of others when using the drop off area on the Teraja site. This week, a number of cars have been noticed travelling at quicker speeds that the required 20 km/h limit on the road. Whilst we do understand that mornings are often quite hectic, we are also keen to ensure the safety of not only our children in school but also all members of the community. Speed limits are in place for a good reason! - Mark

World Nursery Rhyme Week What a wonderful week in Early Years, learning five new nursery rhymes. The children then came together at the end of the week to perform to the Rampayoh children. It was lovely to see the older children joining in. Our youngest children certainly demonstrated their communication skills as well as their resilience and adaptability. We are so proud of them all! A huge thank you to our Nursery parents, Michelle and Wendy who made it all even more special by accompanying us on the cello and piano.

Real Life Superheroes in Nursery! On Thursday 21st November, Nursery were very excited to meet some real life superheroes! We met the BSP firefighters, who came in to Nursery to tell us about their job. They showed us their equipment, and we even got to try some on. We were also able to see their fire truck and got to sit inside it. We really enjoyed their visit and are very grateful that they took the time to come and see us. By Kate Circuit

P1 visit Anduki P1 visited Anduki to help the children develop their knowledge of vehicles that can fly, and in particular, a search and rescue helicopter. The children were very fortunate to have Mr Fraser (Gracie’s Daddy) support with the trip. He was able to share his own personal experiences of having to rescue people. The children saw inside the helicopters, experienced being in a winch and watched the helicopters take off and land - such an exciting day of new learning! Thank you so much to Mr Fraser and his team at Anduki for making the children so welcome and finding the time to answer their many questions. By the P1 Team

P1 blast off to a world of books! On Thursday 21st November, P1 had a wonderful library experience at the Panaga Club. Heather (Ellis’s mum) and Javaria (Zahyaan’s mum) had both organised a library challenge to test the children’s understanding of their Space unit while developing their library skills. The children had so much fun dodging meteors, walking on the moon and searching for planets.
Thank you so much to both parents for making learning exciting and memorable. When children have an emotional connection to an experience then their ability and motivation to learn is considerably increased. This was evident during this trip with all children actively engaged in their learning.

The Magic Toymaker comes to P2 This half term, P2 have been enamoured with the Magic Toymaker and his shenanigans in IPC. He wrote the children a letter asking for help in creating some toys out of junk modelling materials, and through the Magical Message Centre, the children have been sharing messages with him and he has been writing back! He even sent a video with instructions on how to make a paper puppet. At the beginning of November, the P2 teachers were able to attend professional development hosted by JIS with Greg Bottrill, author of ‘Can I Go Play Now’. We have been successful in embedding the Message Centre and Drawing Club to support early literacy development in a joyful and child centred way. The children have also learned about the History of their own lives through the toys they have played with. In Design and Technology, they made a range of puppets including shadow, paper and glove. In DE, they are using Makey Makeys to make their box puppets and toys come to life! The children will share their learning with P1 soon and will themselves become teachers to their younger peers. Tasty fractions learning in P5 In Mathematics learning this week, the children of P5 improved their understanding of fractions by exploring chocolate fractions. This tasty activity was designed to activate the children’s prior knowledge on fractions. During the lesson, the children were comparing and ordering fractions. It was great to hear all of the excellent mathematical vocabulary being used such as: numerator, denominator, whole and equivalent. Great Mathematical discussion were had surrounding 1/2 and 3/6. Although these fractions are mathematically equivalent, because we were dealing with different sized wholes, the children wanted 3/6 as they got more chocolate! We look forward to learning more about fractions over the coming weeks! By the P5 Team

Brunei Archaeological Park and Brunei Historical Centre 3.05 - TBAT explain how the lives of people in one country or group are affected by the activities of other countries or groups. 3.10 - TBAT find out about the past from a range of sources.
On Wednesday 27th November 2019, we visited two sites in Bandar to help with our learning in History. We learned about the Spice Route and trade with Europe in the past. We were able to see links with the other civilisations we have studied. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to see some artefacts from this period and also to learn about the work of an archaeologists. We also learned about our Host country, Brunei, and we were able to see a range of precious primary sources. One newspaper was 122 years old!! Lots of new learning for us!! This was great fun and my favourite activity. My team found lots of treasure when we were sieving. -Oscar
We learnt about and drew different interesting artifacts. It was fun! -Akachi

Pupils in M1 have been investigating the abstract world of forces. Having spent a few lessons deep in the invisible and often counter-intuitive world of these invisible vectors, the pupils finally got to take off their “forces spectacles” and put on some safety goggles to investigate how forces warp objects. They applied their new learning about tension, compression and reaction to find out about Hooke’s Law, elastic limits and how scientists use lines of best fit to spot interesting trends in their data. Meanwhile in M2, we have been learning about ecosystems and the chemical processes that drive them. Stripping back the large scale and very visual differences between organisms and looking down into the chemistry that drives life really gives an insight into the interconnectedness and similarity of life on earth. Outside the lab, pupils have looked at the distribution of different plants in a small habitat. They counted tiny flowers on the school field using quadrats. We used a spreadsheet to help visualise the data and with the application of maths learning on averages and area, we calculated an estimate of 50,000 little flowers in our play space alone. In the lab, pupils investigated aerobic and anaerobic respiration, in themselves and in microorganisms. They learned about factors that affect these processes and how our bodies solve some of the problems associated with the release of energy. By Mr Simon
