Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community,

Issue Forty-Six 6th December 2019

Panaga School IFM/4, BSP Company Sdn Bhd, Seria, KB 3534, Negara Brunei Darussalam (+673) 3375728/3372139 (Teraja/Melilas), (+673) 3372694 (Mendaram/Rampayoh) Principal: Cindy Bin Tahal (+673) 3372355/8777028

I would like to thank the hard working and capable Panaga School teachers, who consistently deliver excellence in teaching and learning. As we near the end of Term One, teachers have been working extra hours in readiness to provide parents with meaningful information about children’s learning. Parents are a crucial element in the success of children’s learning. The tight knit community of Panaga allows a great union between teachers and parents to continuously work... Together: Improving Learning for all children.

Next week, parents will join teachers in Parent-Teacher Consultations (PTCs) for students in P2 to M2. Our Early Years PTCs concluded last week, with a move to regular parent-teacher engagements supporting home-school learning connections in more meaningful ways for our younger students. Children in Pre-Nursery, Nursery and P1 receive End of Year Reports (or Leavers Reports) only.

End of Term Reports for children in P2 to M2 provide an overview of student academic achievement, with a reflection on learning attitudes cindybintahal@panagaschool.com and the development of Personal Qualities. This End of Term Report provides a reference for teacher and parent discussion, with the parent Head Teacher: and teacher consultation aimed to create an aligned understanding Mark Walters about children’s learning outcomes and next steps in the learning markwalters@panagaschool.net journey. Exit Points Exit Points are providing an opportunity for students to own their learning, sharing their new knowledge, skills and understandings with parents. Please see next week’s calendar for more Exit Points dates. Nativity Many thanks to Miss Donna, Miss Claire and Miss Kate who have created a memorable P1 After School Activity for children, bringing to life this year’s Nativity. All students and parents of actors will be entertained and educated next week with this year’s Nativity. Inclement weather Monsoon weather conditions experienced this week have created flooded areas across Panaga and our school grounds. Such weather creates significant hazards.

Panaga School Weekly editor: Damian Brady Please know that you will always be supported with late arrivals or early damianbrady@panagaschool.com pick ups in such situations, in support of the safety of children and everybody in the community. Regards, Cindy

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk The term is rapidly drawing to an end and as we all prepare for the upcoming break, we also take time to look back over this term. The start of the term in August seems a distant memory and the development of the children over this term has been incredible. This week, I enjoyed spending time looking through children’s work and allowing them time to share with me the progress they have made. Taking the time to show a child the work they produced only a few months ago to the work they produce now is really inspiring and not just for the student. The enjoyment of an Exit Point As the term comes to an end, many of the children are going through the Exit Points of their current IPC/IEYC topics. This is an opportunity to celebrate all the children have achieved with their peers. This week, P3 were able to share their Safety Jackets and other work with their parents (who apparently are quite adept on the Cat Walk). Whilst P1s shared their Space learning experiences with P7 children. Allowing children to share their learning with others helps bring learning to life. Thank you to all those who have been involved in making these Exit Points so exciting.

Weekly safety focus This week, I would like to focus on the correct use of the school car parks. There have been a number of incidents of cars speeding within the car park and drivers being very impatient with children and adults walking across the pedestrian crossings. With the recent rain, we have also noticed a number of drivers parking in non-designated spaces. The rules of the car park are set up to ensure all of our children's safety. It may take a few extra minutes but ensuring we all get home safely is essential. Please be thoughtful of others and help to set the correct example for all of our children. - Mark

Nursery are delighted by our new train sets, which were kindly donated by Evan (P6), and his parents Allison and Malcolm. We have had so much fun setting up tracks, exploring mechanisms and trying out different trains. In the words of Matilda, “The trains are cool and go super fast! Thank you so much for your generous donation, it will be greatly appreciated for years to come! By the Nursery Team

Real-life Superheroes This week in Nursery, we have been learning that not all superheroes wear a cape and fly through the sky. The children learnt that we have superheroes living in our house like mum and dad as well as people who help us in the community. Many thanks to all of the Superhero parents who have supported the children’s knowledge and understanding of their jobs. By the Nursery Team

Marie is a super nurse who helped us to learn about story massage.

Gonnie is a super doctor who helped us to understand how to look after ourselves.

Chaoying is a super scientist who taught us all about the microscope.

On Tuesday 3rd December, P5 were fortunate to have Jenna come in and teach us about solar energy. This has sparked interest about how we can be kinder to the environment and take care of our world. During the week, children also examined other forms of renewable energy. Thanks Jenna for helping to make links with our learning and the wider community. By the P5 Team

Panaga Choir’s performance at Santa’s Grotto Last Sunday, our very talented Panaga Choir singers joined musical forces with the Panaga Club adult singers at this year’s Santa’s Grotto at No.49. They helped create a festive feel by singing some Christmas songs and having fun in the process. Well done to all of the children involved; you are all singing superstars! Panaga Choir is open to all children from P3 up to M2 who enjoy singing. We have lots of fun projects in the pipeline for the rest of the school year. If you wish to sign up please email me: sarahhutson@panagaschool.net.

It has been a busy term in Humanities. M1 have been studying plate tectonics and disaster management. They have mapped tectonic plates onto globes and 2D maps.

The M1s went on their Geography field trip to investigate river use, change and development and then headed down to the beach to learn about long shore drift.

M2 have been studying resources, resource management and climate change. They had a visitor from the Department of Agriculture to discuss Brunei’s plan for food security in the future.

Melilas students came together at the event to run an impressive Sustainability Market. All products were designed and made by the children during their Middle Years Design and Technology lessons and at home. The event was a huge success; in total the children raised 623 BND. They have donated 263 BND to Future Energy Lions, Brunei, to fund tree planting projects and 328 BND to #Team Trees, an online donation site to fund tree planting in the USA. Lastly, 32BND was donated to the Oceania charity.
