As Term 1 draws to a close, I would like to extend tremendous thanks to all members of our school community who make Panaga School a fantastic environment where the learning and wellbeing of children is central to all that we do. Our school calendar is always bursting with fantastic learning experiences. Examples of these learning experiences throughout Term 1 have been demonstrated in hundreds of photos captured in Panaga School Weekly. Thank you to our contributors, chief editor Mr Damian, and loyal followers in the community.

International Day 13th March 2020 Next term, we will celebrate International Day. This is a much anticipated day on our school calendar, where we have the opportunity to dress in a way that represents who we are and connect with the many countries that are celebrated at the event. For those of you who are yet to experience an International Day at Panaga, I feel that the day provides an ‘around the world holiday’ in one day.

Thank you to those in attendance at our last Parent Teacher Association (PTA) meeting, who planned the agenda for International Day. Last week, an enthusiastic group of approximately 25 parents and staff markwalters@panagaschool.net members came together to discuss and plan further for the event. Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk For many schools, the final week is an opportunity to slow down and approach the holidays gently; not in Panaga! This week, the children have had a full week of excitement, adventure, and most importantly, learning. There have been shared Exit Points, Splash Days, Spelling Bees, performances, Trips, Winter Markets, not to mention, evenings of Parent Meetings. What a wonderful end to such a busy term. I wish you all a very happy holiday. - Mr Mark

Safety focus of the week Over the past few weeks, there has been an increase in the number of cars left unattended with the engine still running. This is a very dangerous practice and puts children at risk. It is also illegal within Brunei. Can we request that this does not continue in the new term.

PRE-NURSERY “TO THE RESCUE” EXIT POINT We were so happy to invite all of the parents to come to our Exit Point this week. As a part of our “To the Rescue” unit, we have been learning about Super Heroes. We think that all the Mummies and Daddies are the most important heroes for the children in Pre-Nursery. We invited the parents to join us for our international snack celebration. The children had so many different dishes to try from all around the world. - Pre-Nursery Team

To the Rescue Exit Point Nursery had so much fun at our Exit Point for our IEYC topic, ‘To the Rescue!’ We had to complete superhero challenges to get our party food back from the pesky Mighty Freeze. Fortunately, we had parents to help us complete our challenges… and then share our snack! We truly appreciate the support shown, and the children loved sharing their learning. Thank you! Communication

Last week saw the children of P1 share their learning about Space with the P7 children. This involved the children using their knowledge about Space and planets to solve clues which then led them to a skill based activity which they had to complete to win a planet for their solar system. They then had to place the planets in the correct order in the solar system and demonstrate their understanding. The P7 children demonstrated the Personal Qualities of: adaptability, resilience, cooperation, communication and reflection at all times throughout the morning and encouraged the P1s to do the same. It was a wonderful way to end this unit of learning and we look forward to supporting the P7s in their learning about Space in Term 3. - P1 Team

Reflecting on our learning: P1 visit P2 for The Magic Toymaker Exit Point This week, P1 visited P2 for The Magic Toymaker Exit Point. P1 saw the puppets P2 have made in Design and Technology throughout the unit. Then, P2 children taught their younger schoolmates how to make paper bag, shadow and glove puppets using the skills they had learned this term. The children demonstrated the Personal Qualities of communication and cooperation while also reflecting on their learning. The P2 children remembered being in P1 last year, and their visit to P2 then. They rose to the challenge and every P1 child developed a new skill and a new toy to play with. The children also spent time playing together. The P1 children were able to take back a lot of learning and fun to share with their classmates. By the P2 Team

A HUGE thank you to all of the parents who helped to organise a fun, educational and inspiring trip to BSP HQ on Tuesday 10th December. We had our very own safety briefing in the atrium. The children visited different departments to see lots of people in huddle meetings, at their desk and moving around the corridors. We were all amazed at the efforts our community went to in order for this trip to happen! Learning was brought to life in many creative ways. By the P3 Team

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-Seven, 13th December 2019

In P3, as a part of our IPC unit, ’A Day in the Life’, we have been designing and making safety jackets for our teddies. Our aim was to make sure that our teddies could safely travel and work at night if they needed to.

We were lucky to have a visit from Mr Ben, from BSP, to tell us all about safety equipment and to show us what some of the workers wear. We researched the colours and materials that were used to make the equipment, and we looked at how the materials were joined together.

After carrying out our research, we practised joining materials in different ways. We thought about which method would make the strongest join, which looked best and which would be most comfortable.

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-Seven, 13th December 2019

Next, we made a paper template of our jacket, and checked that it fitted our teddies well. The jacket also needed to be easy to take off and put on.

We carefully drew around our paper templates onto bright material that would be easy to see in the dark.

We had to measure an extra 2cm around our templates, to leave room to sew a hem. Then, we cut the material out.

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-Seven, 13th December 2019

We used sewing and the glue gun, to attach accessories to our jackets. This made them even brighter. An adult ironed the hems for us and we helped to sew them up, using a sewing machine.

Our Success Criteria:   

It fits. It is easy to see in the dark. It is easy to take off and put on.

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-Seven, 13th December 2019

Finally, we invited all of the parents in to tell them about what we had learned and to show them our amazing designs!

On Wednesday 11th December 2019, P6 children showed their understanding of the historical periods they have studied: The Maya Civilization, The Kingdom of Benin and The Golden Age of Islam. Their parents were able to use a range of sources to answer a quiz. It was great to hear lots of learning conversations happening.

P7 Go with the flow... P7 children and their family members enjoyed a wonderful Exit Point to their "Go with the Flow" unit. The children were able to teach their family about making thinking visible and how this impacts learning in the classroom. The children modelled how learning is shared and parents completed a rich question task. During the remainder of the time, parents were able to visit the art room to view and contribute to a piece of shared art; complete an Edmodo activity giving feedback on the session; construct a hydro power water wheel and even had the time to review and share the wonderful rivers home learning projects produced by the children. This year, the home learning projects took a variety of forms, including a variety of cakes, Lego constructions, posters and even a model with a working water pump. The children in P7 showed and shared their creativity and learning journey. Learning was evident in a variety of forms. Well done P7! -P7 Team

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-Seven, 13th December 2019

Thank you to the P7 Parent Helpers Wednesday was full of end of term fun for the P7 children. The fantastic P7 parents organised an end of term activity that not only was fun and creative but also supported the P7 children in their You Can Do It! Goals and Personal Qualities. The P7 children showed cooperation, communication and reflection skills when designing their cookies. All of the children enjoyed the event and were very appreciative of the experience. The cookies tasted pretty amazing too. P7 wish everyone a happy holiday!

Panaga School Weekly, Issue Forty-Seven, 13th December 2019

Reflecting on Term 1, by P7 Wow, what a super fast Term One! We cannot believe that we are already one third of the way through our P7 learning journey. We have already completed so much learning this year. We have taken part in some exciting learning experiences that include: an Art Entry Point with our families; a talk from Akash’s mum about solar power and using our Personal Qualities when teaching and working with the P1, P3 and Pre-Nursery children. We have also had the chance to take part in lots of BJSL events. We have spent time learning about brain friendly learning and have worked on making thinking visible in the classroom. We are now starting to “slow think” about or next IPC topic - “Moving People”. Written by Cailee and Leshvanthraj
