Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Issue Fifty-Five 9th March 2020

Thank you, Mr Nathan! Mr Nathan, thank you, along with our fantastic teaching team, for creating a most joyous intra-school Football Tournament for P4 - M2. Adaptability has been a significant Personal Quality exhibited by all Panaga School staff this year as external factors continue to disturb school operations. Last Friday’s intra-school IFM/4, BSP Company Sdn Bhd, Football Tournament was an excellent event, where our students had the chance to engage in healthy competition and practise their sportsmanship behaviours, as a result of the “can do” attitude Seria, KB 3534, demonstrated by our staff. International Day - Friday 13th March The other major event on our calendar, which deserves everybody’s attention, is this year’s International Day. If you haven’t attended a Panaga School International Day before, you are in for a treat. All parents are welcome to attend at any time during the day. Where possible, we all dress in culturally traditional or representative clothing. The International Day parade and assembly will include all of the Panaga School Community, so please come along if you can. P1 Turtles During my class visits last week, my heart absolutely sang watching enthusiastic learners experience various levels of success with ‘mark making’ in P1. These young learners are aged 4 to 5 years. It is at this stage of a child’s development that their interests, stimulated by age-appropriate events, lead to the engagement and understanding of writing. While visiting P1, I mentioned to Elliott and Iyi that each week I need to think about important messages to communicate in our Panaga School Weekly (PSW). Elliott asked if she could write this edition’s news, Iyi asked if he could help too. How could I resist? These young children, whose curiosity is captured by engaging in the International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC) units, proved their deep understanding of the “news”, as they reflected on their last IEYC topic, ‘The Weather’. They learnt through play, in a very convincing news reporting play area, how to contribute to this issue of PSW. Enjoy the following article from Iyi and Elliott (pictured):

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk Once again, another busy week at Panaga last week, filled with ongoing events and so much learning. Unfortunately, the haze returned and I would like to thank all parents and staff for their reaction to this situation. We will continue to monitor it in the coming months to ensure that your children's safety is a priority. A number of events occurred last week including the Nursery Ocean Treasures Exit Point, the P1 Mini Bugs Carnival, BJSL, and finally, we were able to offer P4 to M2 an intra school Football Tournament. Brunei’s 36th National Day On Friday 28th February, Mendaram celebrated Brunei's 36th National Day with a wonderful array of activities, informative displays and creative decorations, put together by our team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs). PreNursery joined Nursery and together paraded around the playground, waving flags and listening to Bruneian-style music. The LSAs performed a traditional dance and the children were invited to join in, learning the steps and tapping coconut shells to the beat. The children had the opportunity to learn more about the customs and culture of Brunei, making ‘ondeonde’ (coconut balls) with play dough, smelling ‘bunga rampai’ (fragrant pandan leaves and flowers), weaving paper into ‘ketupat’ decorations, contributing to a large collage of the famous mosque and writing postcards. There were more opportunities to dance and play instruments and we had fun taking snaps in the photo booth! Thank you to the LSAs for taking the lead and teaching us about the wonderful country we all currently call 'home'.

On 27th February, P1 celebrated Brunei’s 36th National Day with many children coming in to school in different shades of yellow and wearing traditional dress called “Baju Kurung”.

The morning began by watching short videos on how National Day was celebrated in 1984 and recently in 2020. The children had a go at making traditional foods like “Onde – Onde” from playdough, coated with grated coconuts, “Cincin” biscuits and “Chap”. They also painted the big flag of Brunei and national flower called Simpur, and played traditional games. We had lots of fun joining in a traditional dance. We ended our day with lovely group photos.

Making a splash in Nursery! Ocean Treasures Exit Point Parents and children got creative at our Exit Point last week. We kept with our environmental theme and asked the children to use only junk items to create an ocean creature or something linked to the sea. We had sea turtles, octopus, fish and whales, to name just a few...We even had a few swords and shields! Thank you to all of the parents who came to support their children in their learning. P1 teachers have been working with a local school in KB to support phonics teaching and learning with their younger students. P1 staff have visited the school over several Saturday mornings to teach and model phonics lessons to provide coaching for the class teachers and the school with their phonics programme. It was a great opportunity to share knowledge and skills to help further develop learning opportunities for these students. The children and staff were very appreciative of the time given, and having now established this working relationship, we hope to have future sessions together to continue this journey. It is another great example of teachers from Panaga School sharing good practice with the wider community. By the P1 team

Shared learning: P2/P3 papermaking Last week, P3 taught P2 how to make recycled paper. Following on from P2’s learning about recycling in IPC, P3 shared their knowledge and skills in making new paper from scrap. P3s taught P2 how to soak, blend and colour the scrap paper to make the pulp needed. Then, they demonstrated how to create and decorate the paper with natural and manmade materials. Finally, all of the paper was laid out in the hot Brunei sun to dry and transform into beautiful paper ready for decoration or special messages to family and friends. This collaboration highlighted the excellent Personal Qualities within the year groups. The P2 children said they cannot wait to be in P3 next year and do more paper making again! Humanities Focus

Throughout this term, M2 have been studying the Second World War in the Pacific. They have focused on the conquests of the Japanese army throughout Malaysia and surrounding countries. As a part of the study, they have been looking at military strategies and how well planned the Japanese army were. Last week, we studied the attack at Pearl Harbour and the consequences for the World War following this. The children really enjoyed learning about this topic and have been very reflective in their view and understanding of the process of war. Below are a number of facts the M2s have discovered about the War in the Pacific.

The Japanese army moved with such speed and ferocity that no one could stand against them.

The Japanese were able to captue almost all of Malyasia in just over two months.

Approximately 3 million Japanese people lost their lives during the war.

The Japanese army were so well planned. They kept completely silent as they made their way to Pearl Harbour.

The dropping of the atomic bomb was agrred to try and brng the war to an end and to stop the loss of even more lives.

At Pearl Harbour, the first Japanese prisoner of war was captured.

It took only one week for Japan to conquer Singapore.

The Japanese troops were well trained and very well disciplined.

The final Japanese solider surrendered in 1974. Almost 30 years after the end of the War. He was hiding in the Philippine jungle.

This week, the M2 classes will be discussing the dropping of the atomic bomb and will be debating whether this decision was justified or not. We will be discussing opposing views and allowing the children to draw their own conclusions.

Japan did not want to start a war with America they just wanted to stop the American fleet to allow them to access the oil and rubber in Malaysia.
