Panaga School - A community united in learning
As I flick through the pages of the Yearbook, memories come flooding back of another positive year of learning. It is important to recognise that learning can be viewed in many contexts; it is not all classroom-based and many activities that develop Personal Goals will also take place outside the classroom. I think in this Yearbook, we see a plethora of activities that develop learning in both formal and informal contexts. With so many fantastic moments taking place, it is too difficult to mention all of the year’s events. However, some of the highlights have been the wonderful shows and concerts that the children have performed in over the last year. Their confidence and ability to ‘hold’ an audience’s attention at such a young age is inspiring to see. As mentioned earlier, learning takes place in many contexts. The school’s residential trips programme offers many opportunities for children to develop and demonstrate many skills that cannot be observed in a classroom environment. Residential trips provide an arena for children to display and develop resilience, adaptability and cooperation; all of which are key elements in a developing child.
other schools will help develop further the IPC Personal Goals that we all cherish. All of these events do not happen without a dedicated team of individuals supporting our students. Many thanks to all of our committed teachers and Learning Support Assistants who work tirelessly to provide a learning-focused environment for our students. This enables them to develop and fulfill their potential in a number of ways. We also receive much assistance from a supportive team of Governors, a very active PTA, and of course, BSJV. We would also like to thank all parents for their positivity and support they offer to our school community. Thank you to our security, maintenance and gardening staff as well for providing a very safe and attractive place to for us all to learn and work. As many of you are aware, this will be the last year of the Dutch Stream as it will integrate with the International Stream at the start of next academic year. Many thanks to all of the team who have supported the transition process. We have had several committees supporting the students and we would like to thank all involved for their input.
As usual at this time of year, we have to say goodbye to some We have had several successes in the sporting arena this year too, teachers, students and families as they depart Panaga School to winning many competitions and demonstrating excellent head to new locations and adventures. For the Milepost 1 Concert, IP2D dressed up as skeletons to perform their dance to the song, “The Hairy Scary Castle”. It was a wonderful performance by the children.
In Maths, the children were learning to use directional language to direct a friend around an obstacle course. It took a lot of adaptability to get their friend around the circuit.
To finish our Toys IPC unit, the whole of P2 visited Grand Seria Bowling Complex. We all had a great time practising our bowling skills and playing on the arcade games.
As an Exit Point to our Celebrations IPC unit, the children became ‘Mini Teachers’ and taught their parents how to make different celebratory artworks, including Christmas trees and Hari Raya ketupats.

Our excited students experienced different activities involving dance, drama and music from around the world. In one activity, the children worked together to learn a Greek dance and found out about various other European dances. Another popular activity was traditional African singing, dancing and drum playing. The children were also involved in helping to make the fantastic scenery for the Milepost Concert, ‘Oh What a Knight’.

These photos show some of our learning in IPC during our unit on Dinosaurs. We enjoyed creating ‘cast fossils’ of our feet and dusting the sand off just like real paleontologists. In Maths, we explored and compared weights of dinosaurs. In preparation for our assembly there was a lot of drama and dancing too. As you can see from our happy faces we had a lot of fun!
In Maths, our learning takes place inside and outside the classroom. Here, you can see how we worked in a team to explore shapes. By using string, we measured the lengths of different items.

BJSL This year again saw our students participating enthusiastically in the Brunei Junior Sports League. The students were highly committed and dedicated to preparing themselves for competitions. Although results varied through the different sports, the school enjoyed much success on individual levels and at a whole school level. The highlights would have to be: finishing as equal winners of the Boys Touch Rugby competition and being crowned overall winners of the BJSL Football Tournament.
Mr Nathan and Mr Andy V would like to congratulate all students who took part this year as well as those who tried out for the different sporting teams. We look forward to next year’s competition.

Panaga Football Tournament 2015 96 teams from across Brunei competed in this year’s Panaga School Football Tournament. The games were played with tremendous spirit as each team competed with great determination in the hope of taking home a winning trophy.
With over 700 students participating, there was little time for rest; some finals even progressed to penalty shoot-outs. It was great to witness so many happy faces, regardless of the results.
Many thanks to all school staff members, parents and the many other volunteers who willingly gave up their time to make this year’s tournament a great success.

Making new materials! P7 created a material that was both a solid and a liquid. It was messy but we learnt a lot!
We learnt about people’s struggle for freedom across many centuries.
We showed creativity in our ‘Go with the Flow’ unit!
We applied our historical knowledge to create timelines. In doing this, we learnt how to place events in chronological order. We also learnt how events shape the history of a place.

Communicating using puppets!
Cooperating while creating geodesic designs.
Puzzling Settlements! We pieced together pictures of settlements using our knowledge of the features of towns, cities and villages.
Interesting artefacts!
We worked together well when exploring our IPC topic: ‘Building a Village’.
We researched famous developments in the history of settlements around the world and created artefacts for a class museum.

Resilience Our resilience was tested in this IPC challenge! We had to create our own shelters with very few resources.
Creating planets to scale is tricky! However, with a sprinkling of teamwork, mathematical knowledge and the use of our imaginations, we made our own solar system.
We enjoy working both collaboratively and independently.

IP8L are using their enquiry skills to find out more about the factors that affect the speed of simple cars. They cooperated with their group to construct their car and then designed an experiment to explore the impact of changing one variable. Sharing their learning helped to design and build even faster cars!
IP8L show off their thoughtfulness (and their dramatic side!) while learning about the escalation of emotions of different characters in Shakespeare’s play, Julius Caesar. Here, Portia is more and more desperate to know what her husband Brutus is up to, and Brutus is more and more annoyed with his crazy wife!

It was an amazingly busy week away for P8 in Singapore. We found out more about Singapore’s history at the Changi Chapel and Museum and the National Museum of Singapore. We explored the River Safari and the Night Safari. We travelled on the cable car to Sentosa and climbed to the top of the Merlion. We took part in a drama workshop, exploring characters and themes of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, before watching the play at Fort Canning Park. We investigated a crime scene at the Science Centre and then explored the Gardens at the Bay. There was just enough time for a quick shopping trip to Chinatown and then everyone was definitely ready to come home for a rest, but, as you can see, still smiling!
P8 Trip
Friends, Romans and Countrymen gathered in Panaga on Wednesday 18th March for the theatrical success story that was P8’s performance of ‘Julia Caesar’. Adapted by the pupils from Shakespeare’s Roman tragedy, the children retold the tale as the story of a Brunei Junior Sports League team captain, who reached too high and was brought down by her peers.
P8 Concert
Panaga School Teraja Choir joined forces with St John’s School Choir to record ‘Listen To Us!’ written by famous songwriter/performer/composer, Howard Jones. They recorded the song at the RTB radio and television studios in Kuala Belait. ‘Voices Around The World’ is a completely free global project for choirs and schools with the aim to link up young people all around the world and help them to ‘Sing Out, Speak Out and Change The World!’. This year, the release of the song will raise money to help support schools in Africa. It will also be presented to all of the world’s leaders, hoping to open their eyes to how the children of today would like to change the world they live in, to make it a better place. Teraja Choir are singing superstars!

After 6 wonderful years in Panaga, it is finally time to leave. We came as just the two of us and leave as three; Henry has been the most amazing addition to our family. Brunei will always be in our hearts. We will greatly miss the friends we have made here, the fantastic wildlife and the fun parties. The school has been an amazing place to work and we shall miss the staff, brilliant children that are always excited to learn and the supportive parents, as well as Friday snack of course! We wish everyone a happy future and we may see some of you again soon in Gabon! Yvonne and Philip The children in my class have been brilliant to teach! I could not have wished for a nicer group of learners. Many members of the staff have made this a good teaching experience. Izzy I will always have fond memories of Panaga School and will miss working with such a professional and dedicated teaching team. Thank you to the wonderful children and families who have made my time here so special. It is not goodbye to Brunei just yet as I look forward to having more time to spend as a parent at Panaga School. Anne
