Panaga School Yearbook 2016-2017

Page 1

PanagaOurSchool Yearbook 2016/2017 learning is an art form!

The nature of education is complex. Schools, parents and governments all play important roles in ensuring that students are happy, well-educated and will become productive members of society. But what are we truly searching for in education and as parents? What do we all want for our children in this ever-changing world? We are constantly challenged by society with conflicting models of what we should value as parents and as educators. A feature of schooling is to teach dispositions that help equip children to manage some of the rapid changes they will encounter later in life. Often, these skills and understandings are hard to measure, however, they are potentially the most important elements of a student’s learning toolbox. Some dispositions include: Problem Solving, Critical Thinking, Agility and Adaptability, Curiosity and Imagination. At Panaga School, we also aim to develop Self-Regulation, Confidence, Positivity, Self-Reliance, Resilience and a Sense of Humour. Across the school, we teach these dispositions in multifarious ways. They may not always be obvious, but they are indeed embedded in all that we do. Our residential trips programme, community events, Physical Education lessons, Digital Education lessons, Music, and the progressive International Primary Curriculum (IPC), on top of Maths, Science, the Arts and Languages, all play their part in developing these dispositions. We all need to ensure that our children are exposed to and are offered the opportunity to develop each of the above dispositions. The schooling we received in the latter part of the last century will not prepare our children for the modern world. As Thomas L. Friedman highlights, “The future workforce will need employees to reinvent, re-engineer and reimagine a job if they want to advance in it.”1 Our curriculum and ‘Ways of Being’ at Panaga School are future-focused. Across this Yearbook, you will see clear evidence of how we constantly strive to develop and prepare our students for, with the hope they will thrive in, the challenges that lie ahead for them. As ever, thank you to all teachers for your creative, colourful and captivating pages. Thanks especially to Damian Brady and his team for the hours they have spent checking and compiling each page to ensure consistency. At the end of every school year, we sadly say goodbye to several Panaga families, as they move on to other locations in our global village. We also have some teachers leaving us this year; the teachers leaving this summer have an average tenure of 5 years, which is a positive reflection on the school. A special mention goes to Andy Ryan, Head Teacher of Teraja. Andy has played a hugely positive and productive role in the school at every level. We wish him and his family well in Turkey. Good luck and best wishes to all of you who are departing Panaga. Sincere thanks to all parents who continue to support Panaga School in all that we do. Many of you give so much of your time, so freely. It is greatly appreciated. Happy holiday reading to you all. Best wishes, Tim Robinson 1

RAMPAYOH Friday 10th March

The children arrived at school to the most shocking news; Feathers had become lost on his travels! Feathers desperately needed the children to showcase their team-building, problem solving and communication skills in order to find his location. Throughout a morning of racing, building, creating, thinking and decision-making, the children solved the case and were able to rescue Feathers from his holiday in Mexico.

In January, our Chinese community welcomed, ‘The Year of the Rooster’. Children at Rampayoh celebrated the New Year by wearing traditional Chinese costumes and wearing the Chinese lucky colours of red and gold. Some children in P2 also made lanterns to welcome in the New Year. It is usual for the Chinese community to give gifts of money at this time and all of the children received a chocolate coin to wish them a Happy New Year.

Panaga School Choir has had an exciting year singing their hearts out preparing for another project for Voices Around The World. The new song, ‘Sunshine’, brightened up the rehearsals and inspired the children to think about what the song meant to them. This year, we joined forces with a group of very talented singers from Chung Hua Middle School and St John’s School, both in Kuala Belait. Voices Around The World is an ongoing music project that involves young people from around the globe in making an international song and video release each year. The project is free to enter and all proceeds from eventual song and video download sales go to help needy children in different parts of the World. Currently, funds raised are going to help children in Njombe, Tanzania. Funds are used to help to improve the buildings, facilities and quality of teaching. Facilities and resources for teaching are currently very limited. So far, VATW has enabled work to build new classrooms for the school and has helped to establish school development plans. Work has also been done to introduce school gardens, where produce is grown that goes into the school meals. Our joint choirs spent a morning filled with joy and song recording ‘Sunshine’ at the Panaga Club Jam Factory. The children learned about the music recording process and used incredible amounts of resilience, adaptability, communication and cooperation throughout the recording session. Well done Panaga School Choir!

Where do we go? During our orienteering session we learnt how to use a compass - we had all the skills we needed...but sometimes got caught out by hidden clues!

I bet Joppe was hoping that the sodium polyacrylate had soaked up all the water!

The Petrosains Science Discovery Centre provided opportunities for us to explore scientific theories and have lots of fun! We saw a chemistry show all about how different materials absorb water and we watched a small gas explosion in a water container!

The cave was awesome - we climbed 611 steps in total...and then had to climb back down them all! We spotted lots of interesting faces and symbols in the natural curvature of the rock...as well as lots of bats!

P7 Trip

We conquered our fear of heights and whizzed down the zip line at super speed! The teachers were impressed with our bravery!

Having a splashing time! We went flat water rafting which was so much fun, but hard work on the arms! We learnt ‘defensive swimming’ which will help us if we ever have an emergency on the river.

We have also spoken in assemblies, encouraged health and safety awareness and shared the thoughts and views of the student body with teachers. Plus, we have learned many new playground games. Besides English and NTC (Dutch), Panaga School offers French, German and Spanish mother tongue classes. The classes ran once a week and consisted of children from P4P8. All three classes followed the National Curriculum of their respective country. As well as keeping up with their mother tongue, children learnt about the culture of their home countries.

So, what was P8 all about this year?

Portraying the world in different ways...

I see the world in my own way...

We had to think about how news reflects values.

...For ‌ And go mars!!! to Mars!

Knowing about history can help us decode art...

We found political messages in art from around the world.

P8L Learning Activities We decided on our p8 values and communicated them through our own reporting.

My news tells you all about me.

We also made the news...

Time to leave this planet...

...And so do I. I know why we have our own views now as well.

Mars? Sounds like a challenge. We need to develop our technological and science skills and knowledge. Good job someone can cook...

We certainly can!

Teraja

And we can show our science learning at The same time!

Then what?

I’ve got a lot of lines to learn...

P8 migrated (temporarily) to Singapore to learn more about a city that has been shaped by the movement of people throughout its long history. But the trip did not just connect to our IPC learning. We used our drama skills to tell a story of Singapore during WWII. We carried out a series of forensic tests to solve a crime at the Science Center. We can now vault, roll and hang having taken part in a parkour workshop. We found out about the architecture of the ArtScience Museum. We also, like all good tourists, ate a lot of great food, went shopping in the market in China Town and took a lot of selfies!

P8 Trip

Shakespeare’s Richard III was transported to 1920s Chicago by P8 this year. Two rival families compete for power...

Some people will do anything to rise to the top.

And there is lots of violence.

Ghosts haunt the villain.

Love or is it even more hunger for power?

There’s corruption, ambition and betrayal.

(And a few songs along the way!)

On 15th October 2016, the Panaga School community were shocked by the sudden passing of our much loved Learning Support Assistant, Christina Nuyah anak Mangka. Christina began working at Panaga School in 2013 in Mr Martin’s P2 class after originally being employed as a teacher at a local government school. Our sincerest condolences to Christina’s mum, Suan, and father, Mangka. You will always be in our hearts, Christina.
