As I flick through the Yearbook, I can only feel extremely proud of the rich and stimulating experiences that we are able to offer at Panaga. All schools should aim to ensure that children ‘shine’ in numerous areas of school life. Many of our students’ successes will be found amongst the traditional academic areas that we as parents found success with too. They will be strong and able mathematicians, scientists and writers; all of these attributes will no doubt lead to a happy and content life. Other students may take a less traditional route. The creative arts, for example, is something that many of our students show genuine potential in. I hope that all of our students continue to develop their passions and dreams and I hope that Panaga School has played a part in supporting them in their exciting life’s journey. A highlight of our school’s progress over the last few years has been the development of the service element of education. ‘Giving back’ is so important and this does not always mean in terms of materials, it can simply mean with time. Across the Yearbook, you will observe several examples where our community have worked with and amongst other communities, offering support and help when needed. Hopefully, several of our students will play important roles in supporting others around the world in the future.
A constant theme that we see across the Yearbook is the Personal Goals; such an important part of the development of our children. I see them as the most valuable part of our school, as I have highlighted many times before. The Personal Goal of Resilience, for example, is, I believe, a key ingredient for success and happiness and self-contentment in the future. If you have resilience, you are able to manage most of the challenges that life will throw at you with a sense of proportion. This kind of publication is an immense undertaking for any school. The schedule for its completion commenced several months ago. The editor, Damian Brady, runs the operation like a finely-tuned Swiss clock. The process is complicated and involves several people who all play a part in making the book such a success. Thank you to all teachers across the school for their wonderful pages which provide another abiding memory of a happy and successful year. Special praise again to Damian for his diligence and passion for the Yearbook and his attention to detail. I wish you all the best for the future. Wherever you are, I hope that the coming years are successful and that Panaga School and the community will always hold a special place in your memories. Tim Robinson

Teraja and Melilas Brunei National Day
This year, a first for Panaga School - the youngest (Mendaram) and eldest (Melilas) students have joined forces to raise awareness and money for the endangered species of Borneo. There are many species in this beautiful part of the world that are on the endangered list or close to extinction. As the children live in this part of the world, they decided to help in any way they could to protect these species. In Term 2, we held various fundraising events as well as an assembly to showcase what we achieved by working together. We set the bar very high and our aim was to raise 5000 BND. The question is - did we raise this amount? Follow our journey and you will find out how we raised a total of 5230 BND. In January, Nursery started their IPC Animal unit. For the Entry Point, M1S organised an animal fundraising disco. The disco was a huge success with both old and young children. The first event raised a staggering 271 BND. In November 2017, Mendaram and Melilas students met up for the first time. To Two weeks after the animal disco, we saw our break the ice, they painted 150 rubber ducks, which were kindly donated by Steve second fundraising event - the first mural. A lot of hours, as well as resilience, went into creating this Bell, the former PTA Chair. mural. It was completed within a week ready to be hung up for Hornbill Day. The mural was a huge paint -by-numbers project which was cut into 288 pieces. The pieces were painted by children across all four sites and reassembled. It would have been impossible without our supportive parent volunteers. The mural raised 1300 BND. Ruud Straatman, designer of the first mural and the wildlife Warrior T-shirts.
Wildlife Warriors
As part of our initiative, we also found our one-of–a-kind Wildlife Warrior T–shirts. We sold 6 different colours and all were, without a doubt, very popular. We took 4 different orders and sold over 320 of the T-shirts to both children and adults. They are now the ‘rage’ in Panaga and can be seen everywhere. The Tshirts raised a total of2330 BND.
At the beginning of March, the Wildlife Warriors held an assembly; another first for Panaga School as never before has there been a joint assembly for Mendaram and Melilas children. In the assembly, we showcased what we achieved so far regarding our fundraising. In addition, we raised awareness of the endangered species of Borneo. All the children were amazing, especially the Nursery children. To make this day even more special, we invited three Bruneian wildlife organisations: Bruwild, Biodiversity and PNHS (Panaga Natural History Society Society). They set up an exhibition to demonstrate how they protect the flora and fauna of Brunei. The exhibitions were enjoyed by everybody.
The Wildlife Warrior Team
Another fundraising event was the Safari Day - the midpoint of Nursery’s IPC Animals unit. The M1 children joined in with this event as animals and park rangers. With their self-made binoculars, cameras, jeeps and backpacks, the children went in search of the ‘Big 5’. It was an amazing day and all ‘Big 5’ were found. The event raised 369 BND.
In March, we started our second mural. The design is from the book “The Wild Treehouse of Borneo”. The illustrator gave us permission to replicate one of the pictures. After hours of painting and touching it up, we finally completed it. This was no doubt a very challenging mural. The mural raised 960 BND.
The Wildlfe Warrior Team would like to thank everybody for their contributions. We would like to say a special thank you to our honorary Wildlife Warriors, Sarah Collicutt, Alex Loi, Elsie Philimon, Vanessa Lubniewski, Anna Berredo and Daniela Swientek for all their help, especially with the murals.

Performing Arts Exit Points The Performing Arts Exit Point Presentations were a new feature to our Teraja School Calendar this year. The Performing Arts Exit Points give students the opportunity to perform their creative projects for an audience. This is an important part of the learning process as it allows students the chance to experience the impact their creation has on an audience. During this process, they develop confidence, team skills, leadership qualities, as
well as planning and development strategies. The students across each year level in Teraja have worked hard to successfully create and perform three different presentations over the year.

We enjoyed making new friends and learning new skills, whilst developing our resilience, at the Ipoh Earth Camp in Malaysia.
P7 Trip
This year, many P7 children decided to learn French as a second language. They focused a lot on Speaking. The students held presentations in front of their fellow classmates. Suffice to say, they truly outdid themselves. Every single student managed to present without reading from a script. In addition, many are able to write complex sentences using high end connectives, the correct conjugated verb and adjective endings - which is no mean feat. Some have already started experimenting with conjugating different verbs. Well done to P7 for your amazing effort this year in French class.

No one does characters quite like Shakespeare does characters. I admire Julius Caesar but at the same time I can sympathise with Brutus. This is a history so we do know what is going to happen, but at the same time, I really want to know what is going to happen next!
This is a great story... but why? I care about the main character and what happens to him, but also I like the way there is a back story as well which helps me learn more about the characters’ histories. The structure is really helping me get involved in this book!
We learn to look for messages in the texts that we read. Holes is the perfect Middle Years book – Stanley Yelnats is taking responsibility for changing his ‘destiny’, independently using his initiative, with lots of scope for reflection. What is the message in ‘Animal Farm’? I am starting to see some connections to Humanities...
Melilas English
The characters in this story are not just characters but also symbols of ‘Big Ideas’ – science, religion, animal instinct, the future, the past. One ordinary person somehow embodies all of these things... The plot is trying to tell me something about the relationship between these ideas and us as ordinary people, but it will take some unpicking so it’s probably time to start a discussion...
Visualisation M2 students used the concepts of rounding, estimation, averages and scaling to produce piles of rice where each grain represented one person. Here, we can see the population of Panaga School as compared to the entirety of Brunei. When measuring, they made judgements about the level of accuracy required. When numbers became very large, they used standard form.
Melilas Maths
Communication Throughout the year, students take the mathematics and vocabulary they have learned and use it to communicate ideas and solutions to problems. Sometimes they present ideas on a poster to each other, other times they work in pairs to solve puzzles and problems.
Photosynthesis and respiration M2 pupils investigate energy content of different foodstuffs and also look into the production of starch in leaves.
Cells, structure and function of body systems M1 were learning how to observe the small scale structures and individual cells that make up all living things. They created and sold “cell cakes to demonstrate their learning. Here, M2 students are passing digested food from their model small intestine to the large, in preparation for water to be removed.
Waves, sound and light The ever-popular marshmallow wave machine helps students learn the vocabulary and mechanism of energy transfer in waves. This then forms the basis of their learning about the creation and propagation of sound and light. When learning about the ways we see the world, students used their own pinhole cameras and lenses to form images and then related these to the human eye and the cameras in phones.
Research and self organised learning Having learned about the organs and processes of the digestive system, M2 students find out about diseases and problems that can occur when things don’t work as expected.
Melilas Science
We have been designing and making our own protective aprons for use in lessons.
Techniques learnt: Applique Reverse Applique Patch Working Pattern Cutting Seaming Techniques Creating Straps
Mae is creating a fabric sample to see how fabric paint behaves on calico. She is then ready to cut out her apron shape. Stephanie is hunting for the perfect fabric piece. Eleanor is having fun applying fabric dye by hand to create an ombre of shades on her fabric - she has proven to be very confident with her applique skills and has made this beautiful cushion to prove it! Molly is busy measuring, it is important to be accurate with the newspaper template in order to get a good fit. Then, it is time to start experimenting with the fabric paints.
Melilas Technology
Students have worked hard in the Art Department this year. We have learned many new skills with new materials and we now have new workshops! Students focused on developing their observational drawing skills and colour mixing techniques as well as becoming confident with the use of CAD design packages as a part of the design process.
Melilas Art
M1 and M2 have showed dedication, bringing enthusiasm and creativity, to Performing Arts this year. They have worked with varying stimuli and genres to create artistic pieces across Music and Drama. The M1 students created exciting performances with their presentations of Holes, Julius Caesar and their short films. M2 showcased their talents with the construction of their ‘Power’ Performance Art, Pygmalion and even more short films.

There has been a wide and diverse range of activities on offer this year to our Middle Years students: Badminton, Basketball, Dance, Golf, Gymnastics, Softball , Swimming and Tennis, plus many more, have kept our students fit and healthy.

We have also developed our public speaking skills and our ability to present in front of our friends. Aligned with this, we have been encouraged to debate and listen to the opinions of others to form and articulate our own conclusions.
We have been exploring issues and topics that affect us now and as we move forward into adult life. Areas such as politics, religion, ethics and finance have all been explored this year in Citizenship lessons.
Melilas Citizenship
Studying our home countries as well as our host country, Brunei, today...
‌ and in the past...
We learn about connections to help us understand more about the similarities between the different nationalities in our Middle Years classes but also about the differences that make us unique, continuing to develop our respect for each other and the communities that help us feel at home.
...helps us to see how our countries have connected throughout their histories...
...and also why they remain connected today.
Melilas Humanities
There’s definitely more to Singapore than shopping but China Town was just one popular destination for M1. The ArtScience Museum gave us the chance to think about buildings’ structures and then interact (or play?) with the Future World exhibition. At the Science Center we became forensic investigators solving real life crime. We learnt about the 20th century history of Singapore at the Battlebox and Former Ford Factory museums. The parkour workshop was a physical challenge, stretching muscles that some people didn’t know they had! There was a quick trip to Sentosa and Gardens By The Bay but the best way to spend an evening in Singapore has to be watching Shakespeare in the Park!
M1 Trip
M2 took responsibility for planning their own residential trip to the Melilas longhouse here in Brunei. They organised their own ’camp’ inside the longhouse independently, they prepared the shopping list for their meals, cooked for themselves - and cleaned up afterwards! They managed the resources they used, in particular, taking care over the use of water - a precious resource away from the continuous water supplies of Panaga. They were also able to contribute to the development of a new kindergarten classroom in Melilas school, using their initiative to decorate the walls and design play area games. There was also time to get to know the people of Melilas - learning traditional skills of weaving, dancing and playing musical instruments and going exploring in the beautiful surrounding jungle with local experts.

M2 Trip
JuliA Caesar Inspired by Shakespeare, Written, performed and produced by M1 Julia Caesar has defeated Pompey to become the Panaga School Sport Captain. But is all of her power going to her head? Does she want to bend the rules and become a permanent team captain? In Panaga School everyone has always taken turns to lead the team – it wouldn’t be fair to change the rules, just for Julia. Especially not just for Julia. Not everyone in the Panaga team is impressed with her leadership and some team members have started plotting against her. The Soothsayer (the kid in M2 who loves horoscopes!) predicts trouble for the Ides of March. Will Brutus and his teammates make Panaga a fairer place by putting their plan into action at the training session planned for the 15th day of the month? Will the Panaga team be better off without Julia around? Or, could taking action against her lead to even more problems for the school? Nobody knows how Antonia, Julia’s best friend, might respond to a plot against Julia and what powers she might have…

PYGMALION
George Bernard Shaw’s play, Pygmalion, was first performed in 1913. Professor of Phonetics, Henry Higgins, takes on the challenge of transforming a common flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, into a real ‘lady’. He will know if he has succeeded, if Eliza can pass undetected at a royal social occasion. Higgins works with his friend and fellow phonetics expert, Pickering, to change not only how Eliza speaks but also what she speaks about, as well as how she dresses and acts with other people. In our version, Violet is an expert, highly popular ‘vlogger’ who believes that she can make ‘Oily’ George ‘cool’; so cool that he can be admitted to the VIP area of Vidcon, where only the best, most popular Youtubers can go. Will she succeed? Violet believes that she has the power to make George into whatever she wants, and why would George object? He is weak because he is unpopular. As Violet shapes her subject, does he become more or less weak? What does the experience ultimately say about Violet’s ‘power’ and her identity when compared to George? M2 make their audience think...

M2 Production
Since the beginning of this academic year, M1 and M2 have been given the opportunity of learning two foreign languages French and Spanish.
Ghazy presenting his weather report.
Utkarsh and Harshita practising their speaking.
Both language classes have been set various challenges to enhance, among other areas, their speaking skills. In the Spanish classes, for example, they presented a weather report. In the French classes, as one of their units, M1 and M2 presented ideas on what would make up their dream school. We truly have fantastic linguists in the making at Panaga School. Melilas MFL
