Together, Getting Better - Sports in Focus Our definition of learning is "getting better", preceded by "together", as is indicative of the unity represented in our tight-knit community. We'd like to take a moment to acknowledge the learning focus of sports development as students continue to work Together, Getting Better with a physical focus. Last week, two bus loads of students made their way to Bandar to compete in Brunei Junior Sports League (BJSL)’s athletics competition. We are pleased to announce that our students demonstrated skills and determination, supported by many parents and staff in attendance. Rewards for their efforts were recognised through the final results with P5 winning first place and P6 and P7 in second place, resulting in Panaga School being placed second overall at this competition. This week, Teraja and Melilas students participated in their school Sports Day. Next week, Nursery will hold their Sports Day, with Rampayoh Sports Day already taken place. Sports Days are a day where everybody takes part, doing their best to have a go, with the opportunity for our sporting greats to demonstrate their skills. Next week, Melilas students will travel to JIS to compete in netball, football, squash and tennis competitions. On Thursday 1st July, Panaga School will host the BJSL T Ball competition at the Padang. Mr Nathan will communicate relevant information to those involved. We look forward to hosting this event, which will provide parents with greater access to come along and cheer on our representatives. Thank you to Mr Nathan and Miss Melissa who work tirelessly both within Panaga School and across the international school communities (Panaga, JIS, Hornbill and ISB) to create sporting fixtures and events for our students. P5-M2 Parent Information - ISA Results and Reporting System Parents of P5 to M2 students, who wish to learn more about this year's International School Assessment (ISA) results, are welcome to attend a meeting on Friday 25th June, in Teraja Meeting Room at 8.00am. The purpose of the meeting is to provide parents with an overview of the performance of the P5-M2 students who sat the ISA tests in February. For those parents that are new to ISAs, we will also share the report format that ISAs provide for each individual. You will receive your child’s ISA report with the end of year school report on Friday 2nd July. School Calendar We are down to the last three weeks of this academic year, with our calendar full of a variety of events. Please see this week's PSW events page to help you keep informed of what is happening in our school community as we get set to close out another fabulous school year.

In Mendaram, we are learning Spanish this month. We were fortunate to have Zoe, who is a member of our community, come to help us with our learning. Zoe taught everybody how to say hello, goodbye, to count from one to five and sing a little song. Muchas gracias, Zoe, we will certainly keep practising our Spanish skills. By the Mendaram Team

In our “Once Upon a Time’ IEYC unit, we are learning the story of ‘The Gingerbread Man’. The storyteller left us the book, along with a mystery gift of ingredients, to make gingerbread cookies. We have also been learning to retell the story too. By the Nursery Team

We used our mark-making skills to make Wanted posters to try and catch the Gingerbread Man!

On Thursday 10th June, wonderful Eid celebrations took place in Rampayoh, with great opportunities for the children to deepen their cultural knowledge.

A huge thank you to all of our amazing parents who supported our children as they developed some new skills while gaining an understanding of cultural diversity in support of international mindedness.

Dear Melilas Community, Following the half term break, we leapt straight into Assessment Week, introducing a new assessment system for English, Maths and Science attainment. GL Education provides a widely-used assessment system for UK and British international schools across the world, including our high school transition schools here in Brunei. The new assessments in our core subjects offer rigorous, age-standardised sets of data. This information provides individualised results that feed into Term 3 Reports to parents, due Friday 2nd July. In addition, Melilas reports are created from these tests that give us a reliable benchmark comparison against M1 and M2 standards, outside of Panaga, with a detailed breakdown of outcomes against the national curriculum for England. The results have been outstanding and affirm excellent teaching and learning, with close home to school relationships, that produce such academic outcomes in Panaga School’s Middle Years. Melilas, as a group, are operating at a level significantly above the age-standard. I’d like to acknowledge and thank parents for your contributions to these results. Your attendance at parent information evenings and contributions to wider discussions on assessment changes in our Middle Years have added significant value to our school vision, Together, Improving Learning. Your feedback continues to be positive and your support is appreciated.

Middle Years Assessment Data The assessment data represented here demonstrates that 84% of our children are at least at year group expectations for English, and 93% for Maths and Science. Comparatively, UK and British international schools are at 77%. More significantly, a huge 54% for English, 49% for Maths and 46% for Science are exceeding year group expectations, compared to 23% taken from UK and British international standards. Congratulations to Melilas students, teachers and parents for these outstanding results.

Transition Week This week, our P7 children, who are soon-to-be new M1 students, joined Melilas for Transition Week. New students to M1 from our wider community also attended transition activities and classes, fitting in immediately, as many are already close friends.

During Transition Week, P7 children met our Melilas staff, to whom they may not have been too familiar with, taking part in a selection of Middle Years subject classes. This offered a taster of what Melilas life is like, in readiness for next school year. A P7 to M1 parent information session was also conducted this week, to further assist our students’ transition into our Melilas community. Feedback from the children attending Melilas Transition Week was excellent. I think these quotes from our new incoming M1 students sum up the general sentiment: 'The place seemed really big, but now I'm happy about next year.’ 'The teachers were great. We got to light a fire.' (Assuming that quote is from Science with Mr Simon!) 'I'm much happier. I liked my new class and my classmates were really friendly.’

A huge thank you from the participating children and our Melilas and P7 teaching team for making the event a success. We look forward to working with our new M1 families after the summer break.
