Welcome to another wonderful edition of Panaga School Biweekly, where we celebrate learning through an abundance of photos that speak a thousand words! Our students are settled back into face to face learning after such a long time for most learning online. The return to face to face learning has provided us with even more of an opportunity to practise and develop our Personal Qualities. Panaga School’s Personal Qualities are: Communication, Respect, Cooperation, Integrity, Reflection, Resilience, Adaptability, Enquiry and International Mindedness. Growing in Knowledge, Skills and Understanding of our Personal Qualities supports the development of a learner mindset, as well as healthy social relationships.

We are really focused on getting the most out of our learning, especially as this academic year draws closer to an end. In addition, teaching staff are managing the planning that is required to support student transition into the next academic year. Reliable student numbers are crucial in helping us to manage this process in our everchanging expatriate world.

Jake and Gijs at the till settling the huge bill.
We must not forget the toys.
On Tuesday 31st May, Jake (P5D) and Gijs (P6S) went to Nimanja pet shop to buy cat and dog food for the Love Paw Sanctuary. They bought 5 huge bags of dog food (100 kg) which will feed the dogs for 3 weeks, and 8 bags of cat food (70 kg) which will feed the cats for 3 months. The last 30 dollars was spent on dog and cat toys. They spent a total of 560 BND in the shop, money they raised from setting ingenious food ventures. Jake raised 200 BND by opening a Pop Up Drive Through. For his IPC food project, he had to open a restaurant at home. He decided to take it a step further by actually selling hamburgers and chips from his kitchen window. What a genius idea! Gijs did something similar. For his IPC unit, Gijs had to make a presentation showing how he could help the environment. Like Jake, Gijs decided to actually raise money by making delicious Dutch Boterkoeken and selling them. He raised 360 BND. Fantastic friends as they are, they decided to put their money together and buy as much food as possible for the sanctuary. This is a truly outstanding achievement from both students. They could have spent the money on Lego, instead, the money went towards food for cats and dogs. We definitely need more of these young people in the world as every little helps.
Delivering the food to a very surprised Tessa who runs the sanctuary.
Let’s go to the sanctuary to drop off the food.

It is the time of year in The Netherlands where people of all ages gather to walk 2, 5 or 10km per day for four days in a row. This tradition is carried out to build a sense of community, unity and resilience and to promote health and wellbeing outdoors, to be in touch with nature.
This week, The Dutch Committee organised the 2022 edition of Panaga Walkathon. Over 150 children and adults participated this year, creating a wave of orange exploring Panaga camp. Dank u wel to everyone involved!

Road Safety “Stop, look and don’t forget to listen...before you cross the road” was the soundtrack in Mendaram recently, as the children all learnt about road safety. This is the song they practised. They also learnt the importance of listening out for bicycle bells and how to correctly use the zebra crossing. By the Pre-Nursery Team

The Sunbears and Orangutans went for a safety walk in the school carpark. We looked for safe places to cross and used our looking and listening skills to decide if it was safe to cross. By the Nursery Team

The children of P2 have been busy engaging in their IPC topic: Let’s Celebrate! First, they thought of all the celebrations that they knew and documented their knowledge in thinking bubbles. Next, they researched these celebrations and added them to a calendar. They then researched how different cultures use Body Art in celebrations and used their skills to create their own body art designs using lines and patterns.

Creating Celebrations calendars
Each child became a clothing designer and designed a celebration outfit. They went to the classroom fabric store to purchase suitable fabric. The most fun was had as they created their outfit while ensuring it met the guidelines of their design. - P2 Team

In P3, we have been looking carefully at our faces, thinking about the distances between our eyes, nose, mouth and ears. We have used different media to create self-portraits.

Pokémon cards about France When learning French, students also need to learn about the country, France. Miss Steph came up with a great idea to combine the well loved Pokémon cards with various topics about France. Students had to choose 3 things about France that were of interest to them. The choices were endless, from different cheeses to French cartoon characters. They could choose anything that tickled their fancy. Before creating the Pokémon, they first had to find two interesting facts about their chosen topics. They then were allowed to make Pokémon cards using a special app. Suffice to say, within a short time, they have become experts at making Pokémon cards.

Cautiously creeping and crawling into the Teraja meeting room, and appearing from the shadows behind the sofa, our mystery guest told the story of Zelda's Claw to our P6 students. Unexpected screams of frightful delight filled the room as the P6 children listened to our story, drinking hot chocolate with marshmallows by the open fire. A scary WOW to start off our ‘Tale of Fear’.
I was terrified...

For our ‘Roots, Shoots and Fruits’ Exit Point, P6 embarked on a beach walk with Mr Tobias who shared his knowledge about local plants and seeds found around Panaga. The children learned the names of many trees and plants and which of the seeds were edible. They also learned about how seeds disperse and in particularly those carried by the ocean currents.

We finished our beach walk by actioning two UNSDGs - 'Life On Land’ and ‘Life Below Water', by participating in a beach clean. We were astonished with the amount of plastic bottles that had washed up onto Panaga beach. For some of us, this was a new realisation and we had a follow up discussions about sustainability and how we all can take action. By P6
Today, I learned that the Beach Almond Tree grows in Brunei. I realised that there is a lot more litter on the beach than I expected. We can stop littering. Will you join us to help save the environment?

In Geography, the M2s are currently studying the topic of climate change. As a part of their learning, they did a case study on the Republic of the Maldives. Case studies are real life examples that can explain different geographical issues and are an important part of our Geography curriculum. Through a live connection, the students interviewed Mr Basith Mohammed and Mr Musannif Zahir, two Maldivians who are involved in marine conservation projects through the Maldives Whaleshark Research Programme.

For the Maldives case study, students did a SPEED analysis on the impact of climate change on the Maldives. In groups, they studied the Social situation, Political situation, Environmental impact, Economic situation and the Demographics of the island nation. They presented their acquired knowledge in a collaborative fact file. Social

Mr Basith’s and Mr Muchi’s expertise supported the M2s to understand how lives are already affected by climate change. To find out more about the Maldives Whaleshark Research Programme, visit their website: https://maldiveswhalesharkresearch.org/.
