Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Brunei National Day Today, our local staff will present Brunei National Day assemblies at both Rampayoh and Teraja. As a now regular feature of our school calendar, our local staff lead emotive and educational assemblies that demonstrate the national pride and history of Brunei’s independence. Best wishes to all Bruneians as we join together to celebrate 35 years of independence for this great nation. Please be reminded that Monday 25th February is a Public Holiday in recognition of Brunei National Day.

Parent Representative Meeting Next week, all Parent Representatives will attend a meeting with Mr Mark (Head Teacher, Rampayoh/Mendaram) and me. There are a range of topics on the agenda, including reporting and the Parent Teacher Consultation (PTC) changes made earlier this academic year. If you have any comments that you would like considered about school operations, please present them to your Parent Representative, as such meetings are powerful consultative forums for Panaga School leadership consideration. Parent Representatives are thanked for the important role they play in assisting with school communication and building a sense of community. Cycling Safety - Rampayoh/Mendaram

Panaga School Weekly editor: Please assist with cycle safety, particularly at the Rampayoh/Mendaram site. Damian Brady The large walkway between the Mendaram building and Rampayoh foyer is a damianbrady@panagaschool.com dual emergency access point, as well as a pedestrian pathway. It is acknowledged that line markings in this area need improving, with a safety and facilities team currently considering how to best manage this need. In the meantime, please dismount bicycles at the pedestrian crossing outside the Mendaram building and walk them during peak arrival and departure times to avoid unnecessary collisions. Also, please ensure children are walking bicycles in and out of bicycle rack areas. Thank you for remembering to wear helmets and for leaving the front foyer area of Rampayoh clear of bicycles. Wishing everybody a lovely long weekend! Regards, Cindy

Panaga Football Tournament

Many thanks to the army of volunteers who assisted with the successful running of last weekend’s tournament. These events are only able to function through the generosity of the parents who come along and support through refereeing and coaching. On the pitch, Panaga School performed magnificently winning the U7, U8 and U9 categories. We were also runner-up in the U13 Boys competition and placed 3rd and in three other categories.

P5 popcorn and lemonade stand During the Panaga Football Tournament on Sunday, some P5 students and parents sold popcorn and lemonade, made by P5. Selling for $1.00, the proceeds are going to buy books for one of the local schools who were at the tournament. $307 was raised on the day. Many thanks to all who supported this community venture. Recently, several classes completed an optional ‘14 Day Challenge’, set by Doodle Maths. It was a global competition with schools competing from all over the world. Every pupil in the participating classes was encouraged to complete at least one activity every day for 14 consecutive days. The winners were the class with the highest percentage of active days per pupil. Both P5T and P5H were highly commended participants but P4SM managed to finish second overall, narrowly beaten by a school in the UK. The children demonstrated great resilience, especially as they managed to complete their daily activities during Chinese New Year. Well done to all the participants!

If you lose your streak you can always make it up the next day.

150 day streak!

I like that you can customise your own character with the stars that you earn.

27 day streak!

Doodle Maths helps me learn and I like the games and daily questions.

32 day streak!

I like that Doodle Maths lets you revisit what you have learnt in class.

83 day streak!

I like to set myself goals (like complete a 10 day streak). I feel really proud when I achieve it.

54 day streak!

International Mother Language Day The UN Convention on the Rights of the Child states that all children have the right to practise their own culture, language and religion. As a part of this right, we celebrate International Mother Language Day at Panaga School. Children from across Teraja presented an assembly teaching others how to say a variety of phrases in their mother language. In addition, Anika (P5), recited a famous Bengali poem, ‘Where the mind is without fear’, by Nobel Prize winner Rabindranath Tagore, in both Bengali and English. The children who celebrated their birthdays last week had ‘Happy Birthday’ sung to them in both German and English.

Thank you, thank you, thank you to our amazing Garden Gang parents. We are truly in awe of your dedication and commitment to improving our environment. Thank you also to Guilia’s mum, Hanneke, who is sadly leaving our community at the end of this week. She has very kindly donated her whole garden to Mendaram. It was great to see our janitors, Garden Gang and teaching team work together to enhance our three garden areas. We truly appreciate the great sense of community that is ever evolving in Mendaram and feel so privileged to have such a great team of positive and proactive people.

M1 are now confident enough to sketch out their self-portraits and add a variety of subtle tonal shades. They worked from lightest to darkest tones using different grade pencils to achieve contrast and detail in their work.

Using their prior learning, each student was able to create well-observed skin tones and challenge themselves to record accurate details and reflections in their portraits. Miss Josie & Mr Zaim Art & DT Department, Teraja and Melilas

Last week’s puzzle again (No.8)

How many students were at school today? Surprisingly, there was only one correct answer last week and it came from a teacher. I won’t embarrass Miss Suzanne by telling you who it was. I repeat the puzzle here (above) in the hope last week’s incorrect entrants will try again and maybe some new challengers will attempt it. Here is this week’s puzzle below too. - Mr Simon
