Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community,
Issue Forty-Nine 17th January 2020
Together: Improving Learning This week, Shell Schools Education Consultant, Janice Ireland, was welcomed back to Panaga School to conduct teacher training in Looking for Learning, The Panaga School Neuroscience of Learning and International Early Years Curriculum (IEYC). Janice IFM/4, also attended the first Additional Learning Needs and Inclusion Working Party BSP Company Sdn Bhd, meeting, as this area of the school is being further considered in our school’s Seria, KB 3534, strategic development. Negara Brunei Janice’s teacher training generated further reflective and collegial teacher practice as teachers came Darussalam together during learning time to listen to students’ voices to determine if learning is ‘going on’, if learning is ‘appropriate’ and if learning is ‘sufficient’. Such conversations help teachers in the (+673) enormity of constantly reflecting on and improving learning for our students. It has been a privilege 3375728/3372139 to have Janice join us this week and I am both proud and excited by the outstanding educators who (Teraja/ constantly enact our school’s vision of Together: Improving Learning. Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk New PCs Technology has evolved so much over the past decade and as we start a new decade, it is essential that as a school we equip children with the skills, knowledge and understanding of how to use technology effectively. We are delighted to be in the process of installing new PCs throughout our school. These new PCs will ensure we are able to run the most up-to-date versions of school software and allow the children the opportunity to develop new skills with the new programs in place. The installation of these PCs has to date been seamless and staff are enjoying the increased speed and usability of the new computers. A big thank you to Mr Donovan and Miss Cyla who have worked closely with the installation team to ensure everything is working correctly. In the coming weeks, all classes and offices will be have these new PCs in place. We look forward to seeing what these computers can do over the coming months.
Hornbill Nesting As you may be aware, we have resident Hornbills within the school, and at present, they are busy setting up their nest for some possible arrivals in the coming weeks. All children have been informed of the need to be careful and quiet around the nesting area. The children are all keen to learn more and we will update them in the coming weeks. We would ask that if you are on the Teraja site that you are mindful of our local residents too. - Mark
Last term, Sophia-Marie and Vethista in P3G decided that it would be fun to have a stage in the playground. The children already have a range of dressing up clothes to play with and they felt that having a stage to perform on would make the playground an even more exciting place. After discussing their idea, they wrote a letter to Mr Mark and Miss Cindy to see if their plan could be put into action. As a result of their initiative, we now have a brand new attraction in the Rampayoh playground! Well done girls.

Panaga Football Tournament - sign up and volunteer! We will be running our annual Panaga Football Tournament on Sunday 9th February 2020. This is a great sporting event with an opportunity for our students to compete and have fun with students from other schools.
Please click here to register your child’s interest in participating in the tournament. The success of this event relies greatly on the support received from volunteers within our school community.
They play an integral part in the day by taking on key roles which assist in ensuring games run smoothly. Please indicate if you are able to support this event by filling in the second part of the above form indicating if you would be able to referee. Unfortunately, without enough referees, we will not be able to go ahead with the tournament.

New Calculation Policies Find out more - Calculation Policy Parent Meeting Wednesday 22nd January 2.45pm-4.00pm In 2014, the UK Government updated the Mathematics Curriculum for England. Since then, Panaga School has embarked on the journey of implementing and embedding the new recommendations. To support our understanding of the statutory requirements, we have invested in CPD from various professionals, acquired new resources and implemented many new initiatives. This is a continuous journey, and as such, our Maths practice in school is constantly evolving. With this in mind, the Maths Action Team have been working hard to bring the school’s old calculation policies in line with the new Maths Curriculum. This is now ready for us to share with parents. You can find the Rationale and Calculation Policies on the school website. The Maths Action Team will present the Addition and Subtraction Policies to parents on Wednesday 22nd January from 2.45pm-4.00pm. The Multiplication and Division strategies will be shared at a later date.
Please assist us by clicking here to RSVP if you wish to attend. The form will be available until 10.00am on Wednesday morning. The venue will be either the Teraja Meeting Room or Teraja Hall. A notice will be placed in the Teraja entrance at 2.00pm on Wednesday confirming the location. After an initial introduction, we will be branch off into various classrooms to demonstrate the strategies outlined at different stages of the policies. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday. - Perminder Sanghera, Rosie Hawkins and the Maths Action Team (Miss Amy, Miss Georgina, Miss Jo, Miss Hayley, Miss Danni, Mr Daniel and Mr Paul)

Categories of how we learn New learning: When we learn something new we didn’t know before. New learning is often insecure, fuzzy and unstable. Consolidated learning: When new learning becomes more secure, and eventually automatic and established. Treading water: When we are engaged in learning that we already know - we are busy but not busy learning. Drowning: When we are in a state of confusion or uncertainty – we have become too confused to consolidate our learning.
