Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, Issue Fifty-Three 14th February 2020
International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) This week, P5 to M2 students participated in the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) for Mathematical Literacy, Reading and Writing. All completed assessments have now been sent away Panaga School for independent marking, with individual ISA reports due in April. ISA reports provide academic IFM/4, BSP Company Sdn Bhd, performance measures on an international scale. Whole school results are used by teachers and school leaders to consider school strategic developments. Last year, more than 66,000 students Seria, KB 3534, participated in ISA from 64 countries. Our students are congratulated for the way they approached this Negara Brunei assessment week with focus and determination, representative of our Personal Qualities. I would like Darussalam to take this opportunity to acknowledge Miss Perminder, who does a fabulous job of leading the ISA (+673) programme for Panaga School. 3375728/3372139 (Teraja/ Melilas), (+673) 3372694 (Mendaram/ Rampayoh) Principal: Cindy Bin Tahal (+673) 3372355/ 8777028 cindybintahal@ panagaschool.com

Melilas Strategic Development Over the past week, parents of current P7 and M1 students met to consider past histories and future developments for learning in Panaga School’s Middle Years. In addition to parent engagement sessions, current P7 and M1 families will complete a survey to offer input into strategic developments for Melilas. Parent Representatives from P7 and M1 have come together with Miss Josie and me to form a Melilas Working Group. This group will consider student and parent survey results, as well as further logistics, to provide recommendations for the new academic year. Further parent engagements will be considered with this Melilas Working Group, in response to developments. Celebrating Student Leadership A group of P7 students, led by Alessandra, have been using their enquiry skills to find ways to support ethical community projects. In doing so, this team of students have communicated with relevant teachers, school leaders, BSP’s Commercial External Affairs Team and One Stop Borneo (animal conservation) to grow this concept. Alessandra and Chloe (pictured with customer, Dr Ceri Powell, BSP Managing Director) were seen at the Panaga Bird Race selling handmade bracelets in support of their initiative. Congratulations to these young ambassadors who are helping to make the world a better place! Congratulations Miss Steph At this weekend’s Panaga Bird Race, Miss Steph was recognised by Dr Ceri Powell for the significant work she does in support of animal conservation. Miss Steph has been instrumental in leading a community project that has seen the publication of a cartoon book that promotes wildlife conservation in Borneo, in addition to many other initiatives.

passion for animal conservation, particularly Hornbills. Anna continues to educate people from The Netherlands about Hornbills and is helping us monitor the animal cam that Mr Neil has installed at Teraja’s nesting box. Anna has provided a great video of a morning feeding session from the nesting box this week. Shared right for your pleasure.

Updates from the Head Teacher’s Desk It is amazing that another half term has flown by already. I often state this, but it is wonderful to see how much the children grow and develop within their time in school. This half term, the children have learnt so many new skills, have consolidated their knowledge and built a greater understanding of the topics covered. During the break, I encourage you to take time to reflect on the work they have done and allow them to share with you all they have learnt. From the youngest children in Pre-Nursery through to M2, the children all have exciting learning to share with you. Encourage your children to explore new ideas and concepts and create new experiences which allow them to develop a lifelong love of learning. Thank you to all of our P2 parents who were able to attend this week’s Exit Point. Much fun was had by all as the children were able to share their experiences of their IPC topic, ‘Our World’. The children and parents clearly enjoyed working together and sharing learning.
Over this half term, I have been working with M1 on the Transatlantic slave trade. This is often a very difficult and challenging topic to cover with children as it highlights such a dark past for so many countries. Over the half term, the children have been keen to learn about the history of slavery and have shown such maturity in their desire to understand how such a barbaric development was allowed to happen. As an international community, the children are so welcoming and thoughtful towards each other and all show such compassion. Difficult topics from the past are often challenging for us to talk through with children, but I encourage you, as your children grow, to spend time talking through the past. Children can learn so much from the mistakes of our ancestors. This week, the M1s focused on the Underground and have been preparing presentations for each other. - Mr Mark

International Mindedness: Learning about Brunei
This week, P2 visited the Daerah Belait Muzium to learn about Brunei, as a part of this term’s IPC unit, “Our World”. The museum offers a wide range of information and activities showcasing the rich cultures, history and natural resources of Brunei. We were able to see how the Belait district has changed over the past 100 years, learn about how oil and gas is produced, find out about plants and animals native to the area, and consider how people of the area live. We were even able to play some traditional Bruneian games! The museum is located at the end of Jalan Maulana, in the former district commissioner’s house. Do visit if you have the chance!

Pepijn has been studying Photography as a part of the M2 Design and Technology and Art curriculums in Melilas. One of his home-learning tasks back in Term 1 was to take a photograph that could be entered into the Borneo Bulletin Photo Competition. There were 5 categories open to entrants of all ages: People and Culture, Places and Landmarks, Industry, Food and Sports and Energy (Oil and Gas). Pepijn’s photograph was judged against over 700 entries! He was rightfully awarded Second Prize for his stunning photograph shown below in the Energy (Oil and Gas) category. He was the youngest prize winner, proudly representing Melilas students at a prestigious awards ceremony at One Riverside.
