Updates from the Principal’s Desk Dear Parents, How is your thinking? You Can Do It! With the COVID-19 developments taking place in our local community, many, if not all of us, will be wondering what responses may result. Many of us may be questioning how much longer we can continue to cope under currently restricted movement and services, work from home and remote school learning. However, in the words of Shakespeare, that we teach to our students, “Things are neither good nor bad, but thinking makes it so.” Our current situation provides a fantastic opportunity to reinforce the You Can Do It! (YCDI!) teaching and learning approaches from Panaga School's social and emotional development programme. We do have power over our thoughts and our thoughts produce our feelings. For the most part, our thoughts fuel our actions and reactions to life events, something that we can learn to manage through developed skills. This is where the YCDI! “Catastrophe Scale” comes in, to support us with a strategy to "catastrophise" a given situation. This doesn't mean we dismiss things when they are really bad. Problems need to be acknowledged. What a Catastrophe Scale does rather, is it helps us to consider how bad things are on a scale of 0 to 100. Sometimes when challenging life events present, we can have a highly emotional response. Thinking through the realities in relation to what we have to be grateful for and what could be a worst-case scenario, helps us to build perspective, an attitude of gratitude, and provides us with emotional resilience to cope with varying levels of adversity. Adversity on varying scales is a reality of life. A fantastic family activity to help all family members personalise and internalise the skill of catastrophising is to draw your own Catastrophe Scale. (An example of a Catastrophe Scale is pictured right.) It is suggested that this is done when people are feeling rational. On that scale, decide with your family what some ageappropriate references are.

In times where circumstances begin to feel too much to manage, reflect on your family’s Catastrophe Scale or suggest to your child to do so, as a way of helping to manage thoughts and subsequent feelings, actions, and reactions. To help families cope with the current situation, we will continue to be transparent with any possible changes or updates to remote teaching and learning. School bulletins will continue to be distributed via email, also WhatsApp messages will be sent with any such information when it becomes available. Remote learning webinar - parent perspectives Fieldwork Education, across the group of Shell Schools, are offering parents a webinar, providing an opportunity to hear from parents of other international schools of the challenges and successes during school closure and remote learning. DATE & TIME: Friday 15th May 2020 at 4:00 pm (Brunei time) DETAILS OF WEBINAR: Challenging, successful, confusing, fun, insecure, roller-coaster of emotions are just some words parents have used to describe their experience of the school closure period and remote learning. Join us in exploring an area that for many across the globe is the new ‘norm’, yet only months ago seemed inconceivable. During this session, participants will have the opportunity to hear from parents from other international schools, with children spanning the Early Years to Middle Years age range. Our speakers will share their personal experiences and provide an insight into where they have encountered challenges and success. There will also be an opportunity for participants to join in a question and answer session. Once again, I would like to acknowledge the wonderful contributions from everybody in this week's Panaga School Weekly. These pages are all brilliant examples of the diversity that is learning taking place across our community. It is also fantastic to see our Nursery team provide such a supportive message of encouragement and togetherness on the front cover. Wishing everybody a safe long weekend. A reminder that Monday will be a Public Holiday in recognition of The Revelation of Al-Quran. Kind regards, Cindy

Mouth-watering pizza Last weekend, Aaric had so much fun with the challenge of making pizza at home, assisted by his elder brother,Aiden(P4J). Although it was their first time, their pizza turned out to be as delicious as if it was from the pizza restaurant. I love how well they cooperated diligently to make the pizza taste delicious.
