Updates from the Melilas Deputy Principal’s Desk Dear Panaga School Community, It is with great excitement, honour and some relief that my family and I find ourselves out of quarantine and finally in this wonderful school. Middle Years Updates and Personal Introduction As new Deputy Principal for our Melilas phase, I have enjoyed getting in to lessons and meeting our Middle Years students and staff. The picture of Panaga School learning has been positive: our Melilas students are articulate and well-able to IFM/4, BSP Company Sdn Bhd, discuss their learning and share their views and perspectives about our Seria, KB 3534, school. This week, I’ve seen ‘The Scream’ by Edvard Munch used as a Negara Brunei springboard for expression using wax as a new medium, Shakespeare Darussalam analysis and fantastic use of Elizabethan insults, engaging practical work in science investigating thermal decomposition, balancing of algebraic Phone: +673 3372139 Teraja Office expressions in maths that really provided relevance between the abstract and +673 3372694 Rampayoh Office the real world...the list continues and that’s only in under a week. I look forward to the coming weeks and months. Principal: Cindy Bin Tahal

As well as a leader, I’ve also been impressed as a father at how forthcoming and welcoming our students have been in helping my daughter and son feel at home at very different ends of the school - P1 and M2 - but consistent in their friendliness. This is a credit to our children, our families and our community that as a family we have felt so welcome. I have also been building links between Panaga and JIS and ISB and anticipate mutual visits to develop our networks between Middle Years phases in our respective schools and set agendas for collaboration. This is of course important in supporting transition from Melilas to the next chapter in our students’ education. 2021/2022 Academic Calendar Please be aware that we are currently working through final approvals for next year’s academic calendar. As soon as this is finalised, we shall provide a copy to all members of Panaga School Community. This is expected in the next few weeks.

School Discos With thanks to our Parent and Teacher Association (PTA), two school discos are planned for students on Wednesday 3rd March and Thursday 24th June. These events are marked on our school calendar. We look forward to parent volunteer support to enable these social events for students. More information will be published closer to the date. On a final note, I would like to communicate very early on that my door is always open for families that wish to discuss our education here in Melilas, be that academic, pastoral and future transition. I’m at the end of an email at any time! I wish you a good weekend.

Bike Workshop in Pre-Nursery Thanks to parent volunteers, Job and Kristy, we set up a wonderful bike and scooter workshop in Pre–Nursery. The children got to have hands-on bike maintenance and cleaning. It was a great opportunity to develop vocabulary and see how things work. - Pre-Nursery Team

On Friday 15th January, parents joined Miss Rachel, Miss Sur and Miss Claire to learn about how phonics and reading is taught at Panaga School. The main aims of the session were to provide our parents with: • A greater understanding of Phonics phases • Ways to support reading at home • Spelling rules • Deeper knowledge and understanding of the pronunciation of sounds It was an interactive session and we were very pleased to have so many parents involved. We will be offering a second session on spelling and will advertise this through the Panaga School Weekly and our class reps next half term.

In IPC, we learnt how to make a safety jacket for our teddies. One of the skills we learnt was how to operate a sewing machine with the help of an adult.

We were really lucky to have Mr Warren, Miss Nikki and Miss Eva come in as our parents volunteers to help us with the sewing machine. It was definitely an unforgettable experience. A huge thank you! You are indeed “sew amazing.

ICT IN MATHS In Maths, P4 have been learning about position and direction. We used our knowledge of 1/4, 1/2, 3/4 and full turns as well as clockwise and anti-clockwise to program beebots. We also described how many right angles make each turn.
