International Schools’ Assessment This week, our students from P5 to M2 participated in the International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) in Mathematics and English (Reading and Writing). We would like to congratulate our students for the way in which they completed these academic challenges, applied their enquiring minds and reflected on the test questions. As communicated to Melilas parents, M1 and M2 students will complete one segment of Mathematical Literacy testing in the week beginning 15th February, with all other year groups now finished their ISA. The ISA team are currently working remotely. Parents can expect further correspondence when test reports are returned. Bruneianisation Panaga School teachers pride ourselves on the professional development opportunities created for local Bruneian teacher colleagues. Such professional development is a requirement of our expatriate staff in support of company targets. Last year, 256 local Bruneian teachers received more than 35 hours of professional development, with most training conducted in local school settings. This year, Panaga School will once again host a local teacher conference in March. These teacher training sessions are appreciated by both the Ministry of Education and Panaga School, where all important relations and networks strengthen our capacity as educators, building our professional learning community and improving our connections to Brunei as our host country. Chinese New Year Members from our Chinese Community are thanked for offering all of our students an opportunity to celebrate and learn more about Chinese New Year. A whole school assembly, as well as a visit from lion dancers, helped us all grow our international mindedness this week. International mindedness is about being able to respect and celebrate sameness and difference. Such learning also helps us to break stereotypes, where we find out more about the diversity within one culture or country, such as the diversity that exists in China and Chinese people worldwide. Wishing our Chinese Community a very happy Chinese New Year and everybody a safe break from school next week. We look forward to welcoming you all back to school on Monday 15th February.

Nursery’s Safari Adventure Nursery have been learning all about the Savannah animals that live there. A Porcupine sent us a map and instructions about where to find the Shy Five and the Little Five, so with bags packed and binoculars at the ready, we set off on a Safari Adventure!
We followed the map and the clues to get to the secret location and once there, we searched for these unusual Savannah animals. We also went on a lion hunt! Later we had a picnic and enjoyed leaving messages for the fairy at the magic tree. What an amazing adventure!

Savannah Camping Trip! We came across two people camping on our Mendaram field and wondered why they were there? We discovered that they wanted to show the children what it’s like to camp on the African Savannah. We were so lucky to have Ben bring his jeep to Nursery so that the children could learn what you might need if you went on a real safari and how to stay safe from the big animals. Jo brought all of her camping gear and we learnt about cooking on the Savannah, about ostrich eggs and how people collected and saved water. Thank you so much to Ben and Jo for helping the children with their learning!
By Miss Louise and Miss Alex We know that different animals live in different places. We can talk about and recognise some of the animals that live in the Savannah, especially the Big Five. We understand that a map can be used to find different places.

This week, Margriet Vonno, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Singapore and Brunei, along with Jeroen Dieles, Dutch Honorary Consul, visited Panaga School’s Nederlandse Taal En Cultuur (NTC) teachers and students. NTC is a Dutch language and culture programme available to students who are Citizens of The Netherlands, as well as Dutch language speakers. The programme is partly funded by the Dutch Education Overseas Foundation and is a fitting addition to Panaga School’s available programmes of study, given our school and company’s Royal Dutch Shell beginnings. Cultural connections, leadership conversations, pancakes and stroop filled a one hour visit between P3 to M2 NTC students with our special guests. The visit also provided our NTC learners with valuable connections and insights into their country’s leadership representation in our local area. Thank you to our NTC families who contributed to our shared lunch.

Melilas News
This week, as I’ve dropped into learning across our Melilas sector, I’ve seen wonderful examples in PSHE of students developing their ideas and views on different mindsets, examples of Expressionism and use of colour to communicate feelings and emotions, and some excellent interpretations of Shakespeare scenes in Drama, performed from different perspectives.
Please don’t forget to check out our Panaga School Brunei Twitter feed - @PanagaBrunei - where I also post examples of Melilas learning regularly throughout the week. A highlight this week, as a science teacher myself, was a video showing a creative and very visual demonstration of different volumes of elements in the human body. Finally, a special congratulations to our Top 10 students this week for demonstrating Resilience as our focus Personal Quality, as well as more general examples of positive behaviours from our Middle Years. Have a good half term break, Rob Unsworth, Deputy Principal, Melilas
