International Mother Language Day 21st February 2021 Did you know that there are more than 190 countries in the world, but more than 6,000 languages?! At Panaga School, we have children from all around the world with diverse mother tongue languages. The 21st of February marks International Mother Language Day to celebrate the importance of our languages and our identities. The theme of the 2021 International Mother Language Day, “Fostering multilingualism for inclusion in education and society”, recognises that languages and multilingualism can advance inclusion, and the Sustainable Development Goals' focus on leaving no one behind.
On Rampayoh, the children learned about this special day, how our languages may be the same or different to our friends. Thanks to Miss Sarah and Mr Menno, the children have also been learning songs in order to say ‘Hello’ in many other languages too. Children enjoy singing ‘Hello’ in other languages
At Panaga School, International Mindedness means embracing our curiosity about the world, understanding others and being a global citizen. At our school, the children learn about languages through their International Learning, NTC and in Modern Foreign Language lessons. As well, both Teraja and Rampayoh libraries have bilingual language books which you may want to share with your child. Learn more about International Mother Language Day here at the UN website: https://www.un.org/en/observances/mother-language-day

Many bilingual books are available in the school libraries

Rampayoh DE further learn the importance of “online reliability”, as a part of Safer Internet Day
“On Tuesday, 9 February 2021, we celebrated the 18th edition of Safer Internet Day with actions taking place right across the globe. With a theme once again of "Together, for a better internet", the day called upon all stakeholders to join together to make the internet a safer and better place for all, and especially for children and young people.” - www.saferinternetday.org Prior to Safer Internet Day, P1-P3 conducted an assembly which explored our nderstanding of the reliability of people we may engage with and the information we read and view online. During the assembly, we all learnt that trust is something that should be earned and explored. Firstly, knowing who we can trust automatically (our own instincts, our close friends, our parents and teachers). Followed by the need to use our enquiry kills to read, check and re-read, across many sources of information, facts presented by people we are not initially close to, to see if they show integrity . We now that not every stranger has good intentions and that not all of what they share online is genuine. We need to be “wise owls” whhhoooo follow these tips if something or someone online does not feel right or safe: KEY VOCABULARY:
reliability
untrue
genuine

In class this week, we all reflected on what trust, reliability and genuine information are in the context of our DE and extended home learning. Speaking of owls again, among some of the activities, we were presented some facts about owls. Using our instincts and sharing nowledge between us as peers, we could identify some facts we believed were true and untrue. We also had to look a few up. Do you know which of the following statements about owls are correct and which are incorrect? What can you do if you are unsure? HINT: See infographic on previous page.
Which of these are true? Which are false? How can you find out?

On Thursday 4th February, the P2 children had a fantastic treat for Chinese New Year, organised by the P2 parents in our Chinese community. This was a lovely opportunity for children to deepen their knowledge of the traditions of Chinese New Year, develop skills in a variety of traditional Chinese arts and crafts and gain more understanding on why this is an important celebration around the world.

For our IPC unit, Jobs, we learnt about things people do both in and outside our community. In Technology, we learnt different skills: from selecting materials, to sewing; to create our own safety jackets. We later applied our knowledge and these skills to help our parents to make a jacket suitable for cyclists. Lots of COOPERATION and COMMUNICATION between the children and parents were needed!

For our new unit, “It’s Shocking”, we explored with wires, batteries and lightbulbs to make a lightbulb light up. We also tried to read a secret message by cracking the Morse Code.
We explored how Plasma balls worked as a group and even found out that Plasma is often called “the fourth state of matter”.

Melilas News
Back to school after our wonderful Chinese New Year. This week, Miss Perminder and I explored ideas with our older children (P6, P7, M1, M2) about how we might develop our library area for our Teraja/Melilas site. The result was a wonderful array of suggestions from our students and some food for thought for us and our wonderful librarian, Miss Tessa, who is passionate about our library space.
How would you develop this space below?
Please come and give your ideas to Miss Tessa in the library or speak to Miss Perminder or me.
Please don’t forget to check out our Panaga School Brunei Twitter feed: @PanagaBrunei. Some great Science learning this week with M1 introducing chemical reactions, and excellent quote analysis and discussions on A Midsummer Night’s Dream’s levels of disorder affecting relationships between characters, from M2. I learnt a lot! Well done Science and English Teams. Our Top 10 Bankaroo earners will return next week...Have a good weekend. Rob Unsworth, Deputy Principal, Melilas
In lessons this week, M2 pupils began to think about sound as a vibration. We used a signal generator, oscillator and Chladni plate to visualise different sounds as standing waves. One teenage commentator was heard saying, “That’s really cool!” That’s physics for you…
