What an incredible Sports Day! The children continuously cooperated and communicated with their teams. They showed resilience and respect throughout the whole morning. The children were able to show how hard they have trained/practised. Most of all, everyone had fun! Your smiling faces said it all. I am so proud of each and every one of you. I would also like to say a big thank you to Miss Danni, Mr Steven and the P7s for coming over to our Sports Day. Your leadership, enthusiasm and encouragement made it extra special for us. - Miss Melissa

Thank you to our 15 parent volunteers and 285 students who turned up to dance the night away at this week’s school disco. A special thanks to DJ Miss Cyla who got everybody up and moving. This week’s disco generated more than $1,000 for Panaga School’s Parent and Teacher Association (PTA), which will be used to enhance learning and play for all children.

Excited for the parade

On Thursday 25th February, Early Years celebrated Brunei 37th National Day. Students and staff dressed up in Brunei flag colours, and wore the traditional dress called “Baju Kurung” for the girls and “Baju Cara Melayu” for the boys respectively. We started the morning with a parade. Our cute little boys and girls showed their patriotism by waving small flags during the parade followed by the singing of the National Anthem. This was a fabulous opportunity for the Early Years to gain more knowledge about their host country. Lots of interesting activities were set up for them to develop their skills and understand the traditions better. - Early Years Team

Primary 4 visit The Royal Brunei Armed Forces Training Camp, as a part of their IPC unit, Shaping Up – Health and Wellbeing The students were welcomed to the camp and given a brief history of the Armed Forces in Brunei as well as a safety briefing.

We then moved on to the Physical Training Centre where the soldiers gave a demonstration of some of the combat exercises that they are trained to do.

Next, it was time for the children to test their own fitness levels by doing the same exercises!

The classes then went over to the parade ground to observe the soldiers marching. The children also had the opportunity to call out the instructions to the squad and to try out some of the marching steps.

At the Small Arms Range, pupils used the virtual range to aim at targets.

After all of the exercises, parading and target practice, it was time for a welcomed break. The children went to the canteen, carried their food to their table, waited until everyone was seated and then ate their lunch.

Children learnt about the history of the Brunei Armed Forces and about why health and fitness are important. They had the opportunity to practise their physical fitness skills as well as marching skills. Students developed their understanding of life in the Armed Forces in their host country.

This week has been a busy and productive week for our Melilas students. For many subjects, this means that current units, topics and learning are drawing to an end and our students have been working hard consolidating, assessing and evaluating their learning across different subjects. I’ve included some highlights of Melilas’s learning below but for regular, frequent communication about learning in our Middle Years, don’t forget to subscribe to our Twitter feed: @PanagaBrunei. Parent Discussion Groups I would like to take the opportunity to thank all parents who attended our Melilas parent discussion sessions that we ran over the last 2 weeks. It was a wonderful opportunity for me to meet more of our Melilas community, match parents to children and discuss our vision for our Middle Years section. I very much appreciated the chance to hear your views and perspectives. I can’t overstate how important it was to listen to and gain insight from your experiences of our education in Melilas. I will be returning to you shortly with dates for a meeting to bring together our stakeholders and articulate our vision for Melilas. PE Uniform Competition deadline extension: We have had some exciting new entries for our new PE uniform design competition. Some of our Melilas students have asked if they can have a little more time to perfect their designs so we will extend the competition deadline until next week. This will allow us to collect the maximum number of entries from our budding young sportswear designers. The winning design will go on to work with professional designers to translate their design into reality. Top Ten Finally, a special congratulations for our Top 10 students this week for demonstrating Resilience as our focus Personal Quality, as well as more general examples of positive behaviours from our Middle Years. Have a good weekend.

nowledge,

Rob Unsworth, Deputy Principal, Melilas

Ross, the weatherman, visits M1 In Geography, the M1s have been learning about weather and climate. They deepened their knowledge about several aspects of the weather like precipitation, clouds, air pressure and weather extremes such as heatwaves. They practised their weather reading skills, now being able to predict the weather by looking at the clouds, and to work with several weather reading equipment.

This week, we found ourselves very lucky with the visit of Mr Ross Bannister who worked for New-Zealand’s Meteorology Service. Mr Ross helped us understand the Panaga weather by explaining the Intertropical Convergence Zone and how Air Masses affect the weather. He also helped us build our own weather reading equipment. Thanks Mr Ross for the informative and fun morning! - M1 Team
