P2 to M2 Term 2 Student Reports Parents of children in P2 to M2 will receive Term 2 reports today. Your child’s report offers you an overview of their performance in relation to core curriculum outcomes and Personal Qualities presented this term. Term 2 reports are offered in conjunction with Parent-Teacher Consultations (PTCs). We pride ourselves on catering to your child’s individual learning needs, given the transient and diverse nature of our unique school context. PTCs will take such matters into further consideration. An end of year written report will be provided in July, including standardised assessment results and subject-specific teacher comments. In addition, parents of P5 to M2 children can expect International Schools’ Assessment (ISA) reports next term. Student Leaver reports will be generated for departing students, where applicable, negotiated on a case by case basis. Parent and Teacher Consultations (PTCs) While school and ISA reports offer formal, written feedback to parents about children’s learning journeys, conversations at PTCs personalise such information. PTCs provide parents and teachers with the opportunity to discuss the holistic needs of our children, including social and emotional development, next steps in learning and determine learning priorities. P2 to M2 PTC bookings are now finalised in readiness for next week’s all important home and school conversations. Bookings are now locked. Please contact your child’s class teacher or tutor directly, if you need to make any modifications to PTC bookings. Intraschool Football Tournament - Friday 19th March All of P4 to M2 will participate in the Intraschool Football Tournament next Friday 19th March, between 7.30am and (approximately) 10.30am. All P4 to M2 students will participate, unless teachers are advised of medical reasons that they cannot. The event will take place at the Padang. Parents are welcome as spectators. Students will require sports attire for the day, including house shirts and trainers. Please also remember water bottles, hats and sunscreen. A reminder, there are no after or before school sports or After School Activities (ASAs) next week. This includes Running Club on Friday. Wishing everybody a safe weekend.

Wednesday 10.3.2021 - A day of dressing up fun, while pledging donations to local animal shelters. Some photos below from across our school to enjoy this week. Outcomes from fundraising efforts will be reported in a future edition of Panaga School Weekly, with early indications demonstrating a very generous community. Thanks to all of our wild and brave parents, children and teachers.

A great time was had by all in our Rampayoh Gymnastics ASA this term. We have been learning about balance, travelling, jumping and cooperation. We have explored a wide range of equipment and really persevered to learn and refine new skills. P6 were delighted to be able to go to Bandar and visit the Kota Batu Archaeological Park. This was so exciting. We got a glimpse into the life of an archeologist we think it is hard work now! After this, we went to the Brunei History Museum where we learned about The Spice Trade and the interesting history of Brunei.
I wonder what we will find?
We were Archeologists for a day. We had to solve puzzles and pan for artefacts. I found some coins!

- Rob Unsworth, Deputy Principal, Melilas
Dear Melilas parents, At this time of year where assessments are taken and reports are administered, the focus is quite naturally on academic knowledge, application and skills. This is as it should be as I have seen numerous examples of fantastic learning in Melilas this week as subject units and themes progress: 3D art and collage, Shakespeare, Dynasties in Humanities, shapes, space and measures in Maths, reactions and sound in Science... However, this week, I have also seen two wonderful examples of student-led initiatives that demonstrate other skills, attributes and behaviours (across several Personal Qualities) that are being developed in our Middle Years and that are arguably the most important part of school life.
On Friday, we saw our ‘Language Leaders’ programme, where 25 M1 and M2 students delivered language lessons to our younger P2 children, which they had been preparing for over a period of time. This was a great success under the guidance of Miss Steph and Miss Rachel (Please see their article.) This was then followed by an assembly for International Women’s Day 2021 that every student in Melilas contributed to and resulted in an amazing and vibrant shared experience reflecting on different aspects of gender inequality and the role of women in our global society. Again, ably coordinated by Miss Peta and Miss Mandy. Both of these demonstrated our Melilas students’ abilities to stand up in front of an audience and communicate effectively to groups of people; to work together to produce presentations, learning, and speeches with effective teamwork; to develop self-esteem and confidence and to exhibit confidence and creativity. This might be concise research on gender inequality data, a fantastic slam-poem or an impromptu moment of support from an M2 girl to an M1 girl, as she had a moment of nerves (understandably) in front of the whole of Melilas. When we think about the kind of students we want to produce at Panaga School and in our Melilas section, last Friday was a fantastic and clear exhibition of those skills, attributes and behaviours that can’t be measured academically but are the key to future success in life. - Rob

The provision of Modern Foreign Languages (MFL) at Panaga School is developing in line with our School Improvement Plan. Since 2018, Melilas has been running a Language Leaders course for M1 and M2. This year, the course has proven very popular with 25 participants. Every Wednesday lunchtime, since the beginning of this academic year, these students have attended the Language Leaders course. In the first part of the course, we taught the students the necessary skills and theories of language teaching. They also learnt about lesson planning, pace of a lesson, the voice to use in a lesson and how to create resources for the lesson. Last Friday, the Language Leaders taught their very first Modern Foreign Languages lesson to the P2 students. The Language Leaders chose the language and planned their own lesson, including the resources. Whilst they taught the lesson, they were observed and videoed for future reflection and feedback. Every group taught an excellent lesson with truly amazing resources and lesson ideas. The Language Leaders ensured that the lessons had a good pace, keeping the P2 students on task at all times. Classroom management is very hard and takes years to master, not so however for these amateur teachers. They created age-appropriate resources and invented new lesson ideas which Miss Steph will definitely use in future lessons, like: ‘Pass the Parcel’, ‘Old McDonald’ in French and ‘Guess the Fruit’ starter activity. One group used ‘syllable clapping’ to introduce the words in French. This was very effective as the children found it very easy to remember the words.

The Aims of the Language Leaders course are to: • Offer a rewarding context for students’ language learning • Give purpose and context for their language skills • Develop their communication and leadership skills • Reflect on themselves as learners • Give a better understanding of the role of the teacher • Enhance their self-esteem and confidence • Improve their evaluative and analytical skills • Increase their personal attainment in a foreign language
Tasting the fruit we learned about!
All of the adults observing the lessons were deeply impressed by the high quality of teaching. This normally takes years to master. The Language Leaders course has definitely enhanced the students’ confidence and self-esteem. They have also learnt that it is not easy to teach a language and that a lot of thought goes into a lesson. We cannot wait to see them in action again. They are all definitely teachers in the making! Today (Friday, 12th March), local Bruneian school teachers from nine schools are registered for the workshop, ‘Setting up a Language Leaders programme in your school’, led by Miss Steph and Miss Rachel. Together, you and me, our community!

This week, we celebrated International Women’s Day. All of our Melilas students spent time reflecting on gender equality. They considered the women throughout history who have inspired them, researched and unpacked statistics around inequality and gender bias and passed on inspirational messages of hope to each other regarding what individuals can do to feel empowered and step forward to make a difference. Each student made a pledge for #choosetochallenge, #IWD2021. It was wonderful to see our male Melilas teachers lead the way in making pledges for change to inspire our young men to do the same and in doing so, ‘reduce the gap’. We celebrated with music from songwriters who lead the way, urging our young women to do the same. It is said, “All the girls with dreams, become women with vision”. Seeds of dreams were planted this week.
Our students should feel very proud of their efforts and contributions to our International Women’s Day assembly. May they be the change we wish to see. Happy International Women’s Day to you all!

Hopscotch KNOWLEDGE - Knowing that... What do we need to know? 1. How to draw a 10-square hopscotch board on the path with chalk. 2. The rules: • Each player needs a marker - traditionally a small rock or shell. • Each player takes their turn to throw his/her marker on the board, starting with the first square. • The player hops on one foot to each square to the end of the board. • If two squares are next to each other, use both feet. The player must hop over the square containing their marker, then turn and hop back, retrieving their marker. • A player loses a turn if s/he steps on a line or his/her marker bounces out of the square when tossed. The first to get her marker to 10 wins.
SKILLS - Being able to do something What skills do we need to use? •
•
•
We need to practise using our communication skills when playing with others. We need to be able to practise our handeye coordination as we throw our markers onto the correct square. We need to be able to practise balancing on one leg while bending to pick up our markers.
UNDERSTANDING - Making meaning When we understand the game, we will be able to teach others to play it too. We will be able to vary and extend the rules to make it more challenging.
