Staffing Updates It is with great excitement that we announce our final teacher to arrive for 2020-21, Miss Karachi, and her husband, Dimbo, are now a part of the Panaga School Community after finishing quarantine this week. School Strategic Planning Student learning data, questionnaire responses, company directives and curriculum developments inform Panaga School’s strategic direction. Parent engagement sessions have started this term and will continue throughout the year. These will include updates on school developments. The following focuses are whole school strategic learning priorities: •

• •

Additional Needs - differentiation to cater for the learning needs of students functioning outside mainstream curriculum expectations (lower or higher) and/or as a result of English as an additional language. Mathematics and English Curriculum Development curriculum reviews and updates in line with curriculum authority guidance. The Learning Process - developing a shared understanding of the language of learning to promote self aware learners. International Curriculum (IC) - embedding new curriculum units and terminology for IEYC and IPC.

If you would like further information about school operations or strategic developments, please reach out to a member of our school leadership team. Term 2 Learning Reflections The active partnership between parents and teachers, in support of student learning, was evident throughout this week, as P2 to M2 Parent Teacher Conferences (PTC) took place. (PN-P1 PTCs were also held at the beginning of the month.) Together, improving learning drives the incredibly strong collaboration that is fundamental to our school culture and is reflective of our tight knit community. Thank you for your attendance. This afternoon marks the beginning of two weeks school break. We wish our students a safe and joyous holiday. We look forward to welcoming everybody back to school for Term 3 on Monday 5th April.

If you have any old adult or large size children’s clothes, our Nursery children would love to dress up in them. We also like to use our imagination and creativity when we play with accessories such as bags, hats and shoes.

Can you help to support learning in Nursery?

Any donations of wood, natural items or dressing up items can be dropped into the donation boxes in the Mendaram foyer. Thank you!

We have been learning how to use woodwork tools safely, refining our sawing, drilling and hammering skills. We would really appreciate any smaller pieces of wood or driftwood for our woodwork area. - Miss Alex & Miss Louise

Mendaram and Rampayoh Science Day 2021 This year’s Science Day proved to be a wonderful learning experience for all of our students. The children were able to make their way through four areas: Air, Earth, Metal and Water, where they were exposed to creative and exciting investigations, led by a team of dedicated parents and teachers. The children were able to grow their knowledge across many different spectrums: how volcanoes work, investigating about floating and sinking, how to make paper airplanes airborne, to name just a few.

The stimulating ‘classroom without walls’ environment allowed our children to further develop a wide variety of skills and hone their scientific understanding in such an impacting way. They made predictions, took measurements and used careful observation to draw conclusions. This is definitely a morning that created long lasting memories

A huge thank you to all the parents who were able to partner with us, to help develop a love of science in our students. - The Science Day Team nowledge,

P2 Exit Point ~ Our World Muzium Daerah Belait

By the P2 Teaching Team

We expanded our knowledge by reading everything.

P2’s trip to Muzium Daerah Belait was a chance for the children to use and expand their knowledge of Brunei. They made connections and asked questions about items displayed.

This takiding is used to carry goods and farm produce like fruit and vegetables.

Fabric is made by using a loom.

I cannot believe the bowl is so old. 1500 years is a long time ago!

What did they use the baskets for? Do you know what it is called?

Wow! Look at this house! Can you see inside?

Children were encouraged to interact and develop new knowledge and skills of traditional games. The museum staff were very helpful and patient while teaching the children how to play the games.

Did you know Zazu, in the Lion King, is a hornbill?

Look up!

I wonder if it is made of wood?

This week, the P3 children came together to perform a play based on a gripping Bruneian legend. They shared new knowledge of ‘Jong Batu’ to all students, teachers and parents. The P3 to P7 choir sang melodious songs both in English and Malay. Their singing skills whisked away audiences, complementing the drama evoked in the play.

Jong Batu is a rock outcrop located in Kampong Ayer on the Brunei River. It resembles a sinking ship, with the bow sticking out of the water.[In Brunei folklore, the legend of Nakhoda Manis tells of how an unfilial son, his ship and those onboard were turned into the rock known as ‘Jong Batu’.

This week, P5 have been showcasing their artistic talents in their Saving the World IPC unit. After studying the textures and patterns found on tree bark, the children of P5 then created a piece of artwork in a Batik style. This involved the children sketching tree bark textures onto a piece of fabric before going over these patterns with hot wax. Following this, the children mixed dyes to create the colour textures they desired before applying these to their fabrics. The children have used many complex skills along the way to get to their finished products. Good job P5!

STEAM

(Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths)

ASA

The children have been using enquiry skills to plan, create and critique some great STEAM projects this term. Some of our fabulous inventions this term ranged from straw rockets, to suspension bridges, to marshmallow catapults, to marble runs. We worked well to communicate, collaborate, critically think and create! We have been amazed at the diversity in each design and creation and how everyone cooperated using their knowledge and skills to solve the problems together!

P7 Moving people This week, P7 celebrated their “Moving People” IPC learning with their families. This began with a brief assembly promoting the importance of responding to migration in a humanitarian way. After this, the children shared their individual learning journey with their families. They visited the Art room, where they displayed their knowledge of historical art within their host country. Classes then took their families on a virtual tour of a refugee camp during a near pod session. In P7, children use their IPC books as well as a variety of virtual learning environments (VLEs) to present their learning.

Children took part in a near pod lesson with their parents. VLEs allow group, individual and paired learning experiences. They also allow parents to give realtime feedback on the learning.

Dear Melilas Parents, This week, I’m including learning from one of our most important but often overlooked subjects: Personal, Social and Health Education (PSHE). PSHE is our programme for developing personal skills, attributes and behaviours for success and wellbeing, as well as input into life skills in the wider world, such as: media literacy, e-safety and financial understanding. During Middle Years, when our children are developing physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially at such a rapid rate, this is key. Our focus this week was on ‘Teamwork’ and mixed teams were set a challenge, whilst staff observed and shared how different teams collaborated (or not) to reach success. We then discussed the elements of effective team behaviours.

My attention was also particularly grabbed as I covered a History lesson for Miss Mandy and our M2 students shared their depth of knowledge and understanding of their WW2 in the South East Asia Conflict unit that they have been studying. They also ably demonstrated their analysis of sources skills when examining some of the data on regional POW camps. If you are a parent of an M2P child, please ask them what gruesome history this photo demonstrates:

PE Uniform Finalists I’m pleased to announce that Alessandra, Toby and Youssif are joint finalists in our PE uniform competition and will go on to work with designers to produce our new Melilas PE uniforms. The decision was incredibly difficult: there was no design that didn’t contain desirable elements and the quality of submission was outstanding. This is reflected by the fact that we have a joint designs moving forwards. As a group of designers, we all had the opportunity to look at each other’s designs and everyone received feedback. Well done to all who submitted a design and who worked so hard to produced their entry. - Mr Rob

Seri Mulia Sarjana

and Panaga School

On Monday 15th March, Rampayoh and Mendaram staff offered Professional Development to Seri Mulia Sarjana School (SMS) teachers, LSAs and the Senior Leadership Team. This day had been a year in the making, as due to COVID-19, it was unable to take place last year. The two schools began working together 7 years ago and the collaboration between the Early Years and Primary School has continued to grow and develop with teachers sharing best practice to help improve learning. Our staff regularly visit SMS and the professional relationships across the schools has really widened and deepened with more staff becoming involved. In the last four years, both schools have been driving their teams forward in developing the knowledge, skills and understanding of the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) as they move towards accreditation. The journey has allowed for training opportunities and professional learning conversations which has led to increased understanding and growth in confidence of those delivering the IPC.

Panaga School staff from Pre-Nursery to Primary Two opened their classrooms and allowed teachers to observe and learn new skills during the morning sessions, and in the afternoon, our teachers provided training workshops to support key areas of development for Seri Mulia Sarjana School. For the first time in our school partnership, some of our LSAs also offered training to the LSAs from SMS following the lead and guidance of Miss Sur. Miss Donna and Miss Claire worked in partnership with the senior leaders from SMS, acting as critical friends, helping them to self reflect and consider current practices and next steps for their school.

It was a hugely successful day, due largely to the professional skills and expertise of Panaga School staff demonstrating... ‘Together, we improve learning’.

Local Schools Professional Development Conference, Friday 12th March Panaga School teachers support local schools by offering professional development workshops on an annual basis. We work closely with Cluster 6 schools to identify the areas that they feel will help them, to improve their professional practice. This year, a number of our teachers worked collaboratively to prepare and deliver workshops in nine different areas of learning. The areas covered learning in specific subjects such as Maths, the broader area of effective classroom strategies and personal, social and emotional learning. The workshops provided visiting teachers the opportunity to be involved in hands on learning activities, where they were put in the role of a student, as well as theoretical learning activities. In some cases, they were also able to visit some of our younger classes and interact with some of our older students.

The Love Paw Sanctuary and CAS benefit hugely from your kind generosity

Thank you to each and every one of you for your food and money donations during Animal Dress Up Day. The total amount raised was $800 and a huge amount of cat and dog food.

The money and food was shared equally between The Love Paw Sanctuary and CAS (Care and Action for Strays), two local volunteer groups that work tirelessly to care for and feed stray animals here in Brunei. The money donated will be used for vet bills or to purchase additional food for the animals. On Friday 12th March, Rampayoh invited Miss Tessa along to the Rampayoh assembly where she talked with the children about her volunteer work for the animals and how meaningful the donations are. She then collected the food and money on behalf of both groups and delivered it to them.
