Curriculum Developments As an International Curriculum (IC) school, a shared understanding of the language of learning helps our community engage in conversations that make us more aware of the learning process. Celebrations of learning within PSW demonstrate how our Knowledge, Skills and Understanding come together, as we dive deeper into the learning process. Knowledge, Skills and Understanding are represented at Panaga School through images in our Early Years, and as , & in all other classes, including learning celebrations here in PSW. Did you know that the blue “K” represents ‘knowing that’? These are the facts and information that we can recall that underpins our learning process. “S”, coloured red, represents ‘being able to do something’. The purple “U” is a result of combining (blue) knowledge with (red) skills to gain (purple) understanding. Understanding is where we make meaning of our learning. The following paragraph is taken from the International Primary Curriculum, Implementation Guide 2020-2026, from Fieldwork Education, London:

Take the time to visit our competition page, where students have the opportunity to design images to bring to life ‘new learning’, ‘consolidating’, ‘treading water’, and ‘the learning pit’, which are familiar terms in classes, as we consider our level of engagement during learning experiences.

Have an enjoyable long weekend!

Pre-Nursery Celebrate Koningsdag We were joined by Sara and Job, parents from the Dutch community, to celebrate the birthday of Willem Alexander, King of the Netherlands, this week. The crowning achievement for many of the students was to make suitably regal headgear which they proudly wore while taking part in a range of speciallydevised activities, including: ezeltje-prikje, zakdoekje leggen and spijkerpoepen.

And of course the colour of the House of Oranje was everywhere to be seen. - Pre-Nursery Team

Book Week in Mendaram We enjoyed watching the Wonderful Words Vocabulary Parade. We spotted some great costumes and brilliant words. Then it was our turn to parade.

Did you see any Story Doors? Can you guess which story was Mr Damian’s favourite?

We shared books with P7 children. We loved hearing the wonderful stories they chose for us.

We had lots of Mystery Readers in Nursery and PreNursery.

Thank you!

On Monday 19th April, the Book Week Fairies shared lots of exciting ideas of what may happen during Book Week. They even suggested that words were edible because a book was packed in a lunch box. Could a book really be delectable? A challenge was set by the Fairies…

Can you decorate your classroom door to represent your class’s favourite story?

We were so lucky, students from Teraja and Melilas came to read to some classes. They are very good readers and answered our questions about the stories. As we got into our learning, a strange sound happened...oh! We did ‘STOP, DROP and READ!’ This was so much fun. Every time we heard the sound, we had to get a reading book and immerse into a story. It was soooooo much better than writing. On Friday, our doors were ready for ‘Guess the Story’ and we dressed up for the Vocabulary Parade. There were a lot of interesting words and outfits paraded on the catwalk. Miss Donna was in total character all day as Miss Trunchbull from the story Matilda and had the children laughing hysterically with her antics. (You’re definitely not scary, Miss Donna.)

We hope you enjoyed Book Week. From The Book Week Team

Linking to P2’s learning about Reduce, Reuse and Recycle, P2 children cooperated with P3 children to learn how to make recycled paper with any old scrap paper. Everyone had a great time, experimenting to make different coloured paper with their chosen dye. Later, they decorated paper with flowers and leaves they collected from the garden. I learnt that mashed up paper is called pulp.

It was so much fun!

I didn’t know that old paper can be used to make new paper!

We all had a P3 to help us and it felt like they were our teachers!

It was so cool to watch them blend the papers, it looked like juice!

We reused flowers from the garden to decorate our paper.

I really liked squishing the pulp mixture!

We are the “Global Goals” Goal Keeping ASA team. Each week, we will be learning about the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals projects. We will be creating a weekly competition and awarding Personal Qualities House Points to all of those who enter. We might even award extra points for special efforts. We will be keeping track of our weekly plans on the platform below: https://padlet.com/dannielecairns/sustainablegoalsasa

Challenge One Spread your knowledge of the Global Goals by taking a picture of your family wearing the Global Glasses. Remember to talk about the Global Goals with your family. Outside Miss Danni’s room, you will find Global Glasses for you to take home and cut out. Paste your pictures in the week one challenge area of the Padlet above.

P5 performs in Poetry Idol! During Book Week, the children participated in a poetry competition, involving the recital of a favourite poem. The focus was on expression and having a ‘wow’ factor! Our honorary judges proved to be quite a hit! Well done to Rijula of P5D who won the competition with her fabulous recital of ‘My puppy punched me in the eye.’ Well done to all P5 children as the standard of finalists was very high. - P5 Team

Dear Melilas Community, Last week was our fantastic Book Week. In Melilas, we very much linked this to our novel studies in contemporary fiction, as a part of the English curriculum. In M1, we have been working on ‘Holes’ by Louis Sachar, exploring themes of fate, nature of friendships, discrimination, justice and integrity. The novel is set in a fictional juvenile detention camp. As a result, M1 were dressed for the part and engaged in scenes from the novel to link with their superb English learning. For M2, they are studying ‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins. This is contemporary fiction set in an alternative dystopian reality. The book looks at themes of identity and appearance, power and control, loyalty, betrayal and social injustice. For this, our M2s dressed as Districts from the novel, each with their prescribed identities and appearance. Teachers across Melilas also took the opportunity to read short stories or extracts from some of their favourite writers. This offered the chance for students to see their teachers in a different light, experience a variety of fiction and simply enjoy the experience of being read to: an increasingly rare occurrence in our digital world.
