Incoming Staffing Updates The BSP HR team continue to work with relevant authorities to gain required approvals for our incoming teachers. Since last week’s update, Miss Alex (Nursery), Miss Sonia (P4), Miss Charlotte (P5) and Miss Mandy (Middle Years) now have a mid October arrival forecast. Miss Katrina (P6) is confirmed to arrive in country on the 20th of October, with required entry approvals complete. Miss Ali (P2) and Miss Chris (NTC) have an arrival forecast at the end of October/beginning of November. Updated arrival forecasts will be provided in next week’s PSW.
Additional Student Needs - Important Updates This year’s Additional Needs Team (ANT) staffing model includes only 2 teachers, with Miss Mia as Special Education Needs and Miss Rachel as English Additional Language specialists, both holding additional teacher qualifications and significant experience in these roles. Miss Mia, as our ANT Lead has formal qualifications and many years experience as a SENCo (Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator), as Panaga School Senior well as currently undertaking further post graduate studies in this area. Our ANT offer Administration Officer: specialist teacher support and resourcing, in support of students’ additional learning needs. At Panaga School, as many as 70% of students in a class may have English Jalinah Bte Ali as an additional language. Ideally, we plan for small class sizes at Panaga (on (+673) 3375728 jalinah.ali@shell.com average 15 to 18 students) in support of student learning, where quality first teaching and Learning Support Assistants (LSA) can meet the needs of all children. Smaller class sizes are achieved by deploying more of our teacher staffing allowance into classrooms. Unfortunately, small class sizes are currently compromised by our Admin Support, Rampayoh/Mendaram: delayed new teacher arrivals. A situation that is set to improve. I’d like to acknowledge the hard-working efforts of our teachers and LSAs on the ground who are currently Zurimah Bte Jumat z.jumat@shell.com absorbing the impacts of a reduced staff, to ensure quality teaching and learning prevails. If any parents would like to discuss any of this information further, please do not hesitate to contact Miss Mia (Additional Needs Team Lead Teacher) or myself. Admin Support, Teraja: Hasmah Bte Hj Salleh P4 to M2 Cross Country hasmah.salleh@ Next Friday, 9th October, Teraja and Melilas students will participate in an in school shell.com cross country running event. Parents are welcome to attend and are asked to observe
social distancing if in attendance. Please see Mr. Nathan’s editorial inside this week’s PSW, which offers further information. Outcomes and celebrations from next Friday’s cross country will be conducted back at school in a student only assembly. Kind regards, Cindy

In PE, We know that our bodies have internal and external parts that help us to exercise and to keep us healthy. We are able to use parts of our bodies to travel and find a good, safe space while communicating the best way to move with our peers. In Music, We know what a semibreve, minim and crotchet are and we are able to play the correct rhythm and melody on our glockenspiel.

In our first IPC unit we have been learning about what a complex organ the brain is. • We played a variety of games to help improve our short term and long memory. • We found out that our reflexes are an automatic action that keep us safe. • We discussed how emotions can impact our learning .
We took some close up photographs of objects around the school. Can you make links to previous knowledge and work out what they are? (Answers at the bottom of the page - but don’t cheat!!)
Answers; 1) Playground floor under the tent. 2) Tyre 3) Tree bark

P5’s Mathematical Mindset Monsters At the start of year, P5 created their very own mathematical mindset monsters to scare away their fear of maths and promote positive thinking. The messages on the monsters have been put to great effect this week as we have looked to develop our mental mathematic skills. ‘Is there more than one way to do this? - Yes!’ ‘You can do it!’ ‘Maths is about learning—not performance.’ ‘Have a growth mindset.’ By the P5 Team

PHYSICAL COMPUTING MIDDLE YEARS The BBC micro:bit is a pocket -sized codeable computer with motion detection, a built-in compass and Bluetooth technology. In M2 we ran an experiment using the temperature sensor in the BBC Micro:bit computer to see what effect a sun shade has on keeping a car cooler. This gave students real world experience with physical computing of coding, collecting temperature data, and analysing data. Physical computing means creating or using devices that interact with the world around us. A physical computer, such as the BBC Micro:bit senses its environment, processes that information, and then performs some action. Physical computing can make debugging a little more complicated. Problems may be caused by the robot’s design (hardware) or the program running on the robot (software). M2 learned how to overcome such challenges by testing each piece of hardware and software to identify problems. Mr. Neil
