Panaga School Yearbook 2020-2021

Page 1

Senior Leadership Team Foreword It has been a privilege to lead such a wonderful, tight-knit community through another challenging year, stemming from the ongoing impacts of a global pandemic. Acknowledgements to all members of our school community, who have come together to deliver care and world class learning outcomes for our 422 international learners, who represent more than 30 different nationalities.

For many of our community members, it has been well over a year since we have travelled to connect with home and our extended family and friends. Parents and teachers are to be commended for generating successful community events all throughout the year, including during school breaks. These events have provided joy, social connection and much needed respite for all. The pages of this Yearbook provide you with the sense of community and learning focus that is Panaga School. Thank you to the many contributors, producers and editors, who together, have made this sensational keepsake a reality! Together, Improving Learning is a vision that we hold true each day. Students at Panaga School are aware of the learning process with knowledge providing learning foundations, skills generating capabilities and understanding resulting in meaningful learning connections. The pastoral care provided at Panaga School underpins our academic focus to develop and grow our Personal Qualities. Personal Qualities establish Respect, Communication, Cooperation, Integrity, Reflection, Adaptability, Resilience, Enquiry, Creativity and International Mindedness. We are fortunate to learn and play beside the South China Sea, amongst Borneo’s fauna and flora, in the safety of Brunei, The Abode of Peace. May the pages of this year’s Panaga School Yearbook provide everybody with fond memories for years to come of a special place and wonderful community. Together, improving learning

PANAGA SCHOOL SENIOR LEADERSHIP TEAM (L to R) Donna Bonham-Russell (Deputy Principal) Perminder Sanghera (Deputy Principal) Rob Unsworth (Deputy Principal) Cindy Bin Tahal (Principal) Claire Richmond (Deputy Principal) Cyla Ahmad (Business Service Lead)

The PTA AGM, held in October 2020, saw the handover of the President role from Yinka Idowu to Christina Landry-Boullion. Yinka’s contribution to the Panaga School Community has been significant and the school is a better place thanks to her contributions over the years. Since October, the PTA has been the driving force behind a number of fundraising initiatives including Panaga School’s first ever Carols by Candlelight in December 2020 and the Picnic in the Park in March 2021. These events served to not only raise funds, but provide an important family experience for our community who could not visit their home countries due to COVID-19. The Panaga School PTA raised around $9,000 in the first eight months of the year. One particularly memorable initiative was when children from P2A wrote to the PTA requesting funding for a sofa in their classroom. The PTA pledged to match any money they raised. The children organised a cupcake stand to raise money to buy their sofa and learned a lot from the process.

Above: Sarah Harrison (Secretary), Kristy McGrath (Treasurer), Christina Landry-Boullion, (President). Below: October 2020’s PTA Annual General Meeting.

The money raised by the PTA has gone towards great initiatives include a discretionary fund of $1000 for each site, mud kitchens, sofas, play equipment, morning tea for Teacher CPD Days, soil and sand for playgrounds and shade tents.

A special thank you to Miss Cyla for her talent and tireless efforts throughout the year. Without her support, many PTA initiatives would not have been possible. Thank you also to the volunteers from the PTA who generously gave their time and energy to support our Panaga School Community.

P3 children came together to perform a fabulous Brunei Legendary Assembly. They shared knowledge about a legendary tale called ‘Jong Batu’ to the whole school and their parents. The P3 to P7 Choir sang melodious songs both in English and Malay. The singing and acting skills mesmerised the audience.

A rock outcrop located in Kampong Ayer on the Brunei River resembles a sinking ship, with the bow sticking out of the water. In Brunei folklore, the legend of Nakhoda Manis tells of how a disloyal son was turned into this rock, known as ‘Jong Batu’.

Building cool models and setting things on fire... In Science, you get to do both at the same time!

M1 pupils developed their observational skills and worked carefully and safely to prepare some textbook-quality microscope slides. Pupils learned how the correct use of new technologies allowed scientists to develop more complex and accurate theories of the world in which we live. Some cracking bacteria on that cheek cell!

The ever-popular Marshmallow Wave Machine and Slinky Spring introduced knowledge about waves. A converging lens was used to recombine a dispersed spectrum to white light, deepening our understanding of colour and refraction.

Identifying, assessing and mitigating risks are some of the important skills developed in M2.
