Bali is situated in the heart of the Indo-Pacific, the world’s richest marine biogeographic zone. There are more than 2,000 species of reef fish in Bali’s waters, and then there are the eels, crabs, lobsters, turtles, starfish, shrimp, and nudibranchs … in addition to Mimic octopus and Wonderpus, Ambon Scorpionfish, Rhinopias, Mandarinfish, Pyjama and Banggai Cardinalfish, Ghostpipefish, Pegasus Seamoths and Flamboyant Cuttlefish to name just a few. The pelagics seen include Manta Rays, Whalesharks and, from July to mid November, Mola-Molas (the weird-but-wonderful Ocean Sunfish). The reefs contain profuse hard and soft corals, Gorgonian and other seafans, coral bushes, and sponges including some massive barrel sponges... Bali’s dive sites offer great diversity: vertical walls and sand slopes; steel and wooden shipwrecks; limestone shorelines and black, volcanic outcrops; peaceful bays and ripping currents; deep, coral-covered ridges, shallow seagrass beds and big bommies, as well as both shore- and boat-diving. … so, with so much to offer, it’s no wonder that in 1999 Annabel Thomas (PADI OWSI 462621) and Wayan Suanda (PADI MSDT 460177), AquaMarine’s Director of Diving Operations, established AquaMarine Diving – Bali (PADI 5 Star Gold Palm Resort 6344). AquaMarine has been under continual ownership and management by Annabel and Wayan since that time. AquaMarine is the only British owned dive company in Bali, Indonesia’s first Project AWARE Go ECO Operator and recipient of the PADI Green Star Award. Reasons to choose AquaMarine Diving – Bali: - AquaMarine only offers diving at Bali’s better dive sites. - Our dive staff are employed full-time and have minimum PADI Divemaster certification (50% are PADI Instructors). - Maximum ratio of 1 dive guide for 4 divers. - We have the three best custom-built dive boats in Bali. - Minibuses customised for maximum space and leg room. - Emphasis on safety and enjoyment.

Get Wet! 1 Day Introductory Adventure Diving Programme 1 dive USD115; 2 dives USD130 AquaMarine designed this programme for people who either do not have time for a PADI course or would just like a taste of scuba-diving. We usually conduct this on Tulamben’s world-famous USAT Liberty Shipwreck or at Blue Lagoon, near Padangbai (a favourite location with underwater photographers) – there’s no better place to fall in love with diving than Bali! Min age 10yrs. PADI Bubblemaker Pool (1 dive) USD45; Ocean (2 dives) USD130 Let AquaMarine introduce your children to scuba-diving – guaranteed fun! Max depth 2m, either in the pool or the ocean (Tulamben Bay is ideal). Min age 8yrs. Scuba Refresher Pool: USD45; Ocean USD120 (2 Dives) If you feel your scuba skills and knowledge are a bit rusty, this Scuba Refresher will reacquaint you with the necessary diving skills to get back in the water.

Day Dive Trips NORTH EAST COAST Tulamben Bay (USAT Liberty Shipwreck) USD100 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) World-famous for the 120m USAT Liberty shipwreck, Drop-off and Coral Garden, Tulamben Bay offers incredible shore-diving with very easy conditions - perfect for underwater photography. The resident marinelife includes Leaf scorpionfish, Bumphead parrotfish, pygmy seahorse and a huge school of Big-eyed trevally. Suitable for all levels, including snorkellers.

©Ferarri

©Postlethwaite

Tulamben (Batu Kelebit, Palung-Palung, Emerald) USD110 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) We use a “jukung” (local outrigger) to access dives sites at Batu Kelebit, Palung-Palung and Emerald. Like Tulamben Bay, the marine life is diverse; Batu Kelebit has a variety of sea fans, coral bushes and sponges with sand patches between. The colour of the sand is lighter than at Tulamben Bay and provides an excellent colour contrast. Large pelagics can be sighted here including dog tooth tuna, schools of barracuda, reef shark and Bumbhead parrotfishes. At the other end of the scale, we also see pygmy seahorse. Amed (Japanese Wreck) USD105 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) The reef- and muck-diving at the quiet village of Amed yield many unexpected treasures. Near Lipah Bay, 3km southeast, there is a 20m coral-encrusted steel freighter. Suitable for all levels, including snorkellers.

NORTH WEST COAST Menjangan Island (wall dives) Recommended as 2 Day/1 Night trip. Ask us for details.

©Postlethwaite

ISLANDS OFF THE EAST COAST (ex Padangbai) Nusa Penida (inc Mola-Mola sites in season) USD130 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Nusa Penida is the largest of the three islands just off Bali’s east coast and offers drift-diving in mild to strong currents. The water is cold but often startlingly clear, with gorgeous corals, prolific fish, some turtles, reef sharks and, from July to mid-November, Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish). Suitable for AOW and OW divers with some experience.

©Postlethwaite

Nusa Penida (inc Manta Point) USD145 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) As above – with the inclusion of Manta Point, on southwest Nusa Penida – a must-see! Manta Point is suitable for OW divers with some experience.

Day Dive Trips EAST COAST Blue Lagoon, Mimpang, Tepekong, Gili Biaha & Gili Selang Blue Lagoon USD100 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Mimpang/Tepekong/Blue Lagoon USD110 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Gili Biaha USD120 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Gili Selang USD140 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Blue Lagoon/Jepun: a favourite with underwater photographers. Suitable for all levels, including snorkellers.

©Bogard

Mimpang/Tepekong: some of Bali’s most stunning diving; vast numbers and great diversity of fish, abundant sharks and frequent pelagic visitors, set against chiselled black walls with beautiful, healthy corals and often superb visibility. Due to variable conditions, a Divemaster present who is experienced with these sites, is essential. For experienced divers. Gili Biaha – a little further to the north is the small, crescent-shaped island of Gili Biaha, (AquaMarine’s favourite dive site) where you may see anything from Blue-ring octopus to Mola-Mola (Ocean sunfish). For more experienced divers. ©Fatherree

Gili Selang – a small island lying off Bali’s eastern point, like all exposed sites, at times has ripping currents. We therefore restrict this to expert divers only. The interesting and rich sand slope to the north of the island has some stands of hard branching corals and occasional bommies, the deeper areas of the slope are more protected and therefore home to sea fans, soft corals, barrel sponges and coral bushes.

MUCK SITES

from USD105 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) For muck divers we can arrange Day Dive Trips to Seraya Slope or Amed (Ghost Bay). Further afield are Secret Bay (North West Bali) and Puri Jati (North Bali) – it is possible to arrange Day Dive Trips to these sites, however, we usually recommend an overnight stay. Ask about retaining one of AMD-B’s experienced spotters! Refer to the Dive Safari section of this booklet for dive site descriptions. Day Trips prices are per person and include: Return south Bali hotel transfers; diving as stated, PADI Divemaster (or above) dive guide; boat transport (Padangbai and Nusa Penida trips); diver medical insurance; mask/snorkel, booties/fins, tanks/weights; lunch and unlimited bottled water; free use of beach towel; local taxes, fees and porterage. Prices are based on a minimum of 2 divers and are subject to change. Excludes: BCD, wetsuit, regulator @ USD5/item

Special Day Trips

Mola-Mola (Ocean Sunfish) Trip USD130 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Diving at certain sites around Nusa Penida/Lembongan from late July to mid-November we have a very good chance of seeing these weird and wonderful pelagic visitors to Bali’s waters. Currents can be strong and changeable, with the Mola-Mola seen at depth and we recommend that divers hold AOW certification with a minimum of 20 logged dives or be very experienced OW certified divers. Mola-Mola & Manta Point Trip USD145 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) Combine diving at Mola-Mola sites and Manta Point on the southwest coast of Nusa Penida – a must-see and an ideal combination of sites!

©Postlethwaite

Barbeque Trips USD110 – USD120 1 dive at Mimpang or Tepekong + 1 dive at Blue Lagoon or 2 dives at Blue Lagoon. After your dives a barbequed lunch will be served to you on the beach - grilled fish, satay, salads, with Balinese vegetables and sauces. Gili Selang & Gili Biaha Trip USD140 (+USD30 – 3rd dive) 1 dive at Gili Selang + 1 dive at Gili Biaha (depending on conditions). This exciting Day Trip will take you to two of Bali’s least visited and most untouched dive locations. Conditions can be challenging so this trip is for experienced divers only. If the water conditions mean that we cannot dive at either Gili Selang or Gili Biaha, we would dive at Blue Lagoon, Mimpang or Tepekong - all fantastic alternatives! We can also arrange a Beach Barbeque Lunch for an additional USD10/person (must be booked one day in advance).

Day Trips prices are per person and include: Return south Bali hotel transfers; diving as stated, PADI Divemaster (or above) dive guide; boat transport (Padangbai and Nusa Penida trips); diver medical insurance; mask/snorkel, booties/fins, tanks/weights; lunch and unlimited bottled water; free use of beach towel; local taxes, fees and porterage, prices are based on minimum 2 divers and are subject to change. Excludes: BCD, wetsuit, regulator @ USD5/item.

Mola-Mola Code of Conduct These guidelines are designed to provide a satisfying and safe diving experience while ensuring the lowest sustainable impact on the Ocean sunfish population of Bali. The aim of this Code of Conduct is to ensure Mola-Mola can settle onto cleaning stations without being disturbed. The removal of parasites at the cleaning stations is critical to the health of the Mola-Molas. Once settled, they can remain for longer periods, offering better quality interactions for divers. ©Ferarri In the recent past aggressive divers routinely disturbed Ocean sunfish on their cleaning stations. This greatly decreased the time they spent near shore and greatly limited the number of sightings. Records collected since the early ‘90s show in earlier years “Bali sunfish” were seen in much higher numbers. More importantly, the fish were more stationary and seemingly at ease at cleaning stations - the Ocean sunfish did not show any reaction to divers and remained in position for long periods. This allowed divers to enjoy the Mola-Molas’ natural behaviour and have longer encounters with this mysterious giant fish. These encounters gave Bali its reputation as a world-class area for diving with Ocean sunfish Mola-Mola.

By voluntarily adopting these guidelines, it is hoped divers can lessen the pressure on Ocean sunfish and allow these fish to resume their natural cleaning station behaviour and previous high numbers. The quality of interaction, diver safety and the value and sustainability of this unique diver experience can also be maintained and ideally improved as the Mola-Molas will be less likely to be frightened away.

CODE OF CONDUCT - DIVING WITH OCEAN SUNFISH - Always approach an Ocean sunfish very slowly within its field of view. - If the fish are just entering the cleaning station, do not approach until the cleaning has begun and the fish have been stationary for at least 1 minute. - Maintain a minimum of 3m from the closest Ocean sunfish when the animal is at a cleaning station. - Maintain a minimum of 10m when the animal is not yet cleaning and is approaching the reef. - DO NOT TOUCH. You’ll remove mucus protecting it from infection. - Do not swim behind an Ocean sunfish as this can startle the animal. - Do not swim under the fish as your bubbles will disturb cleaning behaviour.

- Do not block an Ocean sunfish’s escape route off the reef or pathway onto a cleaning station. - If a Mola-Mola approaches, remain still. - Do not use flash photography as this often disturbs the fish. - Do not use personal underwater motorized propulsion vehicles or make unnecessary loud noises. - Be courteous to other divers and restrict your viewing time to 5mins when other groups are present. - Always, always follow the directions of your dive guide. - As always, AMD-B will restrict group sizes to max 4 divers and 1 guide; for more than one group, entries will be staggered to avoid overcrowding the site.

AquaMarine Diving - Bali

Given 29th November 2011

How your donation helps Project AWARE’s mission is to conserve underwater environments through education, advocacy and action. All donations help combat challenges facing the aquatic environment. Keep up the great work and help safeguard irreplaceable underwater environments for future generations.

$10 can involve two children in conservation with the AWARE Kids Program. 1400 children entered the International Year of the Reef (IYOR) Art Contest to illustrate the threats to coral life and how to protect reef ecosystems. “The ocean is important to the ecosystem, without it our lives and the lives of all other living creatures would be greatly altered. Every living organism down there is important and needs to be respected. How would it feel to know the next generation would not ever see a living sea turtle or dolphin? Take care of our world, and it will take care of you.” Contest winner, Casey age12.

$25 gives a volunteer dive team the tools to monitor whale sharks. The Whale Shark Project helps raise awareness about the plight of sharks and helps conserve this threatened species. It involves divers and snorkelers in a data and image collection programme to support whale shark science, conservation and management efforts.

$50 can activate a team of volunteer divers to monitor coral reefs for stress and bleaching. Over 1000 Project AWARE CoralWatch Operators raise awareness about the threat of climate change to reefs and collect data for reef species worldwide. “Being so remote, the villagers are entirely dependent on the sea for their livelihoods which makes the health of local reefs of critical importance. The contribution of Project AWARE CoralWatch Charts is engaging the community on this issue.” Lynne Shori, President Friends of Rambutso, Papua New Guinea.

$100 can go towards important advocacy to enforce protection of threatened species. As a member of World Conservation Union (IUCN), Project AWARE helped frame the next four years of the global environmental agenda. Sharks, coral reefs and climate change were at the top of the action plan. Three successful motions included enforceable shark finning bans, shark and ray catch limits and a prohibition on fishing for oceanic migratory sharks.

$500 can go towards the cost of funding critical cleanups to address the issue of marine debris. A staggering 1.4 million plastic bags were collected on International Cleanup Day in 2008. The plastic bag ranks number two in the list of Top Ten Marine Debris items according to the Global Marine Debris Index (oceanconservancy.org). “It is vital to our industry’s very existence to participate in International Cleanup Day every year. Not only does it allow us to do our bit to physically clean up the seas, but it also allows us to share our passion for the oceans.” Neil, Remote Area Dive, Australia. “In the Philippines plastic pollution is a huge problem. It is up to us to start to educate people, most people have no idea that what they are doing is wrong.” Rae, Atmosphere Resorts, Philippines.

$1000 can help install mooring buoys to assist vulnerable coastal communities protect their reefs. In 2008 Project AWARE grants helped establish mooring buoy systems in Bonaire, the Bahamas, Honduras, Hawaii, Belize,Tonga, the Philippines and Fiji. “We would like to take this opportunity to thank Project AWARE for the financial assistance to install mooring buoys. I am positive this will make a lasting difference to the health of the coral reefs in Ha´apai.” Happy Ha´apai Divers, Tonga

Beyond Bali ALOR (FLORES) Diving in the region of East Nusa Tenggara is known for its currents and unspoiled walls. The appeal of Alor’s diving includes remoteness, the huge schools of fish and pelagics, clear waters with pristine corals reefs. The scenery above the waterline is spectacular with coconut palms and pure white sandy beaches with traditional villages built half way up the mountains. AMBON (MALUKU) Ambon is undoubtedly famous for world class muck diving with a huge array of residence critters that can be spotted during long shallow dives with most sites close to the shore. There are also sites across the island that offer high quality wide-angle photo opportunities with diverse marine life. Ambon Bay has a 134m Dutch cargo shipwreck (recently identified as the Duke of Sparta). The foredeck is at 32m and the bow at over 40m. BUNAKEN NATIONAL PARK (NORTH SULAWESI) The area of Bunaken National Park offers some of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world, with outstanding varieties of coral and reef fishes, with world-class drift and wall diving. The Park itself consists of five islands: Bunaken, Manado Tua, Nain, Mantehage and Siladen, as well as a portion of the North Sulawesi mainland. Tucked away on the steep walls, you’ll find an abundance of invertebrates and small marine life forms. With visibility around 25m and water temperature 26°-30° C, this is a favourite destination for underwater photographers and naturalists from around the world. In addition to the clear waters around Marine Park, Manado Bay also has some muck sites and there is a 60m shipwreck lying at 40m which can be accessed from the shore. CENDRAWASIH BAY (WEST PAPUA) This has become one of the newest diving destinations in Indonesia and is now included in several Liveaboards’ West Papua itineraries. Near Nabire the resident whalesharks often visit the fishermen’s floating rafts. On the journey to this area, Liveaboards will visit the WWII Japanese wrecks on the Manokwari coast. More than 20 wrecks have been located. Of these, the five wrecks that can be dived on are: Pasir Putih, Pillbox, Cross, Mupi and Shinwa Maru. GILI ISLANDS (LOMBOK) Gili Trawangan is the largest and most popular of the three Gili Islands (Trawangan, Meno, Air). The three islands are located off the northwest coast of Lombok in the strait between Lombok and Bali. The Gili Islands offer interesting scuba diving for all divers (novice to experienced) and boasts an extensive Biorock reef. This backpacker haven offers an unhurried pace with no motorised transport. KOMODO This World Heritage Site has beautiful corals, macro critters, lots of pelagics, even mangrove dives ... and Komodo dragons. The corals in the Park are pristine, and marine life includes Mantas, sharks, turtles, dolphins, dugong, many pelagics, plus tiny pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, and frog fish. The sites vary from gentle easy coral slopes to heart pounding adrenalin drifts, from the warm waters of the Flores Sea in the north to the chillier waters down south in the Indian Ocean. The underwater terrain is varied with sheer cliff walls, pinnacles, channels, sandy flat bottoms, underwater plateaus, slopes, caves, and swim-throughs, all with varying colours, sizes and types of coral both hard and soft. LEMBEH STRAIT Lembeh Strait is a 12 km long stretch of water separating Lembeh Island and mainland Sulawesi. The reputation of Lembeh Strait as a mecca for divers interested in odd and rare macro fauna continues to grow. This pristine section of water in North Sulawesi is home to many unique sea creatures which include pygmy seahorse, mimic octopus, ghost pipefish, as well as other larger species. It is a fantastic dive area for underwater photographers and the diversity of smaller creatures ensures many memorable photo opportunities. LOMBOK Just a stone throw away from Bali, Gili Air and Trawangan, there are 2 distinctive regions with breathtaking scuba diving that make up the southern Gili Islands. Sekotong is a small tropical location with limited topside activities, other than snorkeling, swimming and of course scuba diving. It’s perfect for couples and families who just want to relax and enjoy the atmosphere of the southern Gilis! Belongas Bay with its challenging dive sites, is where the misconceptions about diving South Lombok and the southern coastline come from. Diving the “Magnet” and “Cathedral” is only for more adventurous and experienced divers, but other, more protected, dive sites around the Bay are suitable for less experienced divers. Scuba diving here you’ll find an unspoiled underwater paradise! Pristine reefs, intact environment, impressive diving, and an amazing marine diversity! RAJA AMPAT Known for its biodiversity, the marine life is outstanding. Four beautiful islands called Raja Ampat are surrounded by spectacular reefs swarming with fish. Brilliantly hued soft corals and sea fans, sponges, tunicates, crinoids and hard corals create a habitat for tiny shrimp, giant clams, nudibranchs, and sea stars while turtles, schools of tangs, runners and triggerfish roam the reef. Dense schools of snapper and sweetlips hang effortlessly in brisk currents and wobbegong and epaulette sharks lurk beneath. Mangrove forests fringe the islands, filtering the sunlight onto the corals just below the surface. Even more remote and still being explored are Fakfak and Triton Bay. WAKATOBI The Wakatobi National Park is named after four islands, Wangi Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia, and Binongko all in the Tukangbesi archipelago off the southeast coast of Sulawesi. Its remoteness is one of its greatest attractions both above and below the surface. Pristine reefs and vast marine diversity can be found around the islands and atolls of Wakatobi with hundreds of dives sites, many of which remain unexplored. Throughout this region the diving consists of extensive reefs with some dramatic drop-offs abounding with sea fans and gigantic sponges.
