Characteristics of a Good American by Benjamin Wayne Houston of Omak, Washington - March 16, 1942

If you were asked, what does it mean to be a “Good American” what would you say? I’m sure that this common idea has been pondered by many people through the years, including great writers! I feel safe in saying that none were written better and with more true American Heart & Spirit than Benjamin Wayne Houston. Wayne was a family member who I fondly recall was a nice man with a big heart! He wrote this as a young high school student in the spring of 1942, just a few months after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. These were his words: A good American has many, many good characteristics. The most valuable and important characteristics a good American can possess is honesty. He does not cheat anyone but then gives the other fellow the best deal. He threats all the situations fairly and squarely. A good American has faith in himself, in the government, and in other people. He trusts them, always believing that they are being honest toward him. He puts all his knowledge into the better welfare of the public. He is always generous. He does not try to be a miser, but he shares and shares alike, with all his fellow men. He helps the other "guy", does some of his work when he is needed. He is not afraid of work but is always willing to do his share and a little overtime. He co-operates with the public and sympathizes with them. A good American is not impatient. He takes his time and reasons out the different problems that face him. He has and preserves tolerance. That is, he endures offensive persons and opinions. A good American keeps his promise. When he tells someone that he will do something he keeps his word and does it. He never goes back on his promises. A good American always does his best work, toward duty to God and his country. He is physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. A good American has good manners. He uses these all the time. When he is in danger he stands back and helps the women and children out before himself. He always shows courtesy to women. He is trustworthy. He is loyal to all to whom loyalty is due. A good American is friendly. He does not go around hating everyone but is cheerful toward all.

A good American is thrifty. He puts his money into Defense Bonds and Stamps for the security of his country. He works faithfully, wastes nothing, and makes the best out of his opportunities. He is brave. When faced with a danger he does not turn and run away but faces the danger squarely. A good American is reverent. He is reverent toward God. He is faithful in his religious duties, and respects the convictions of others in matter of customs and religion. A good American believes in the United States as a government of the people, by the people and for the people. He loves his country, obeys it's laws, respects the flag, and is willing, at all times to do his part to defend it against all enemies. He is willing to sacrifice all his pleasures, even his life, so that other people may enjoy life's pleasures better.

Uses a 12x18 (half sheet) pan*

FOR BARS:

• 2 1/2 cups King Midas flour* • 1 Tbsp baking powder • 1 tsp salt • 2 sticks unsalted butter, softened • 2 cups white sugar • 2 eggs • 2 tsp almond extract* • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract* • 1 (15oz) whole milk ricotta cheese • 1 bag sliced almonds* (for topping)

- Preheat oven to 325 degrees. - Grease bottom & sides of 12x18 pan.* - In medium bowl, sift flour, baking powder, & salt. - In bowl of electric mixer, beat 2 sticks butter & sugar till light & fluffy. - Add eggs & beat thoroughly. - Add almond & vanilla extracts. - Add ricotta cheese till just combined. - Spread batter in prepared pan & bake 35-45 minutes till edges are lightly golden. -Cool completely on wire rack.*

Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will present its 31st annual Old Time Christmas event on December 4, 5 and December 11, 12 with candlelit tours leaving every 15 minutes beginning at 2:30 p.m., with the last group going out at 7:00 p.m. More than any other holiday, Christmas celebrations center on the traditions of our families and our heritage. Begin a new tradition with your family this year during an outing to Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, where the Christmas

From the softly glowing lantern light to complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, Old Time Christmas is sure to become a favorite holiday pastime for many years to come. Gather around a bonfire while you wait for your visit to the 1800s to begin. Guides in period clothing will lead guests on their journey into the past beginning with this year’s Victorian skit. Glimpse an 1890s Christmas as the family reminiscences and makes new holiday memories. Before you leave take a peek at their Christmas Putz, a homemade nativity and village scene, that was a custom the Moravians began and was soon enthusiastically adopted by the Pennsylvania Germans. Afterwards it’s on to the living Nativity located in the barnyard which includes the Quiet Valley farm animals and offers a look at the foundation of this special

Panorama Community Magazine has its own character name, squishdate which is likened to a birthdate, collector number, character backstory, and of course, the all-important -- and God forbid you remove it-- printed tag. In fact, I was interviewed about appraising collectible Squishmallows recently and the 20-something reporter admitted that she and her friends are wild about collecting the cuddly creature toys, too. SJM Annual Christmas Tree Display in The Valley

Steve Martonick, owner of SJM Auto Sales and Repair, was raised in West Hazleton. Growing up, Steve and his friends would go over to McKenna’s Corner (Broad Street and Winter’s Avenue) and enjoy the large Christmas Tree, displayed there every year. Later in his life, he moved to the Valley with his family and started his business. He believed it would be a good idea to give back to the community by putting up a large tree like the ones of his childhood at SJM for everyone to enjoy. Five years ago, he drove around the area looking for a tree that would be appropriate for his plan. From there, he asked the owners for permission to use the tree and recruited area businesses to help move it. They craned, cut, and transported the tree to the SJM parking lot, where the hole was excavated and the tree was carefully secured. It was then decorated with over 5000 lights and other decorations. It has been an annual event ever since. This year’s tree was donated by the Wagner Family of the Conyngham Valley. In addition to the tree celebration, Martonick made SJM a Toys For Tots drop off. Each year, he plans an eventincluding live reindeer, Santa Claus, and refreshments- to raise awareness for this charity. This year's event is Saturday December 11th form 1pm to 3pm.

Holidays & Model Trains The sounds and sights of model trains circling under the Christmas tree are a part of the memories of the holidays for many. The tradition of model trains on a small circle of track or more elaborate layouts are as much a part of holiday memories as Visitors to the Anthracite Model Railroad Society clubhouse are invited to take a step back in time to the 1940s and early 1950s, the era depicted in the custom built, 21 by 48-foot HO scale layout. The layout will be closed that weekend. Club members have spent thousands of hours recreating the routes of the Lehigh Valley and Central of New Jersey Railroads and some of the communities they served in northeast Pennsylvania. Work on the layout continues year-round with the newest addition a depiction of Pottsville. Visitors are invited to experience historic Hazleton stretching from Church Street on the west to Cedar Street on the east. Visitors will recognize historic Hazleton structures including Hazleton’s Lehigh Valley Station, the Blue Comet Diner, Kresge’s, Deisroth’s and the Markle Bank building. Adjacent to Hazleton, the Lehigh Valley yard features storage tracks and accessory buildings. In Ashmore, visitors will see an engine terminal with a "half-circle" roundhouse and turntable, facilities for coaling and watering steam locomotives and a multi-stall diesel shop. Visitors will also see the Drifton and Jeddo breakers as well as a section of underground coal mine. The village of Eckley includes the original breaker, Company Store, Immaculate Conception and St James’ Churches,

the Emerald House, workers’ houses, and mule barn. On the lower level, visitors will see historic Mauch Chunk (Jim Thorpe) including detailed models of the CNJ station, Court House, Asa and Harry Packer Mansions, Lehigh Navigation Building and St Marks Church. In addition, visitors will have a chance to see models of the now destroyed Lehigh Valley Station and the Hotel Wanetah. Also featured on the lower level are the Packerton Yard, Bethlehem Steel Mill, the Lehigh River, and the Lehigh Canal with mule drawn, coal hauling barges. The tradition of opening the display to the public started soon after the club found its first home in the 1980s. Club members enjoy sharing their labors with railroad fans of all ages. Some model enthusiasts make the pilgrimage from out of state, while other visitors are close neighbors. Some are brought in by a love of trains; others come to be reminded of the Hazleton area of their childhood. Parents and grandparents enjoy sharing the excitement that all children have for model trains. The club will host a special Thomas and Friends weekend December 4th and 5th. On that weekend the club will feature a display of Thomas and Friends locomotives and rolling stock. Area children will recognize many of their favorite engines like Thomas, Percy, Emily, and Spencer rolling along the

Jim Thorpe’s 40th Annual Olde Time Christmas Weekends bring you the place to celebrate the holiday season all December long as the snow falls, the bells ring, and everyone is feeling jolly. The legend of Krampus is thought to originate in Germany. According to Norse mythology, he is the son of the

goddess Hel, who is a daughter of Loki. Though the tradition of young men dressed as hairy, horned, and goatlike Krampii to scare away the ghosts of winter pre-dates the celebration of Christmas, became intertwined with the legend of Saint Nicholas. In many European Alpine towns, it is Krampus who punishes naughty children while Saint Nicholas rewards the good. Traditionally, Krampus, who has cloven hooves and goat horns, visited children alongside St. Nicholas; St. Nicholas would reward well-behaved children with modest gifts (such as oranges, walnuts, or chocolates) while naughty children would receive punishment from Krampus. Krampus predates the traditional Christian

A Letter From Brandon's Forever Home I’m sure when we all look back on the past year and a half we can all agree that our lives were thrown into a tailspin and no one expected it. So many aspects of our day to day lives went from routine to upside down. While the world struggled to adjust to the new norm of life during a pandemic, Brandon’s Forever Home, our staff and programming also redirected to meet the demands that COVID-19 set upon us. We saw a community of people suffer sickness, job loss, family loss, and hidden child abuse and with every new need we quickly planned to face it head on and continue to provide our services to now a much broader client base. For those unfamiliar with our mission, Brandon’s Forever Home was created in the heart of downtown Hazleton to serve the surrounding community’s abused and neglected children. What once was the drop off of a few donations in a founder’s garage has grown into its own site, a hub, for activities, services and material assistance. Brandon's Forever Home offers free clothing, school supplies, hygiene products and more to children in foster care. We also provide tutoring, scholarships, and free monthly activities for families and those in our mentoring program. We offer a support

group as well lead by a licensed therapist. Additionally, our food distribution which operates weekly is income based and open to the general public. With all of this said, we could not have accomplished any of these tasks without the outpouring of help from volunteers, the tremendous amount of donations we received, and the unity of other local non-profi t agencies. Each time the storm became stronger we would rise up to meet it. Thank you to CEO, who we have partnered with to feed our local families each week without pause, the local organizations such as Leadership WilkesBarre, Junior Leadership Wilkes-Barre, Saint Jude’s Church Mountain Top, our devoted staff and volunteers, our teen mentors, and all of the individuals who reached out to us privately with monetary donations, material assistance, clothing, diapers and more. We have been behind closed doors for much of this time due to health and safety restrictions but please know that every effort you have made to support this mission has made all the difference. We truly could not have continued to provide what we had without this support. Please continue to spread the word of our mission, pray alongside us for the health and safety of the world’s

Project 113’s locomotive will pull Schuylkill County’s only steam-powered Santa trains in December

Steam-powered Santa trains will operate from Minersville on two days this year: Saturday, the 11th of December, and Sunday, the 12th of December. Three trips each day will travel from the Minersville Station to south of Schuylkill Haven and back, a fifteen-mile, 70-minute round-trip, with departures at 10:30 a.m. and 1:00 and 3:30 p.m. Santa rides every train and talks with every child! Railway Restoration Project 113 maintains and operates the steam locomotive that pulls the trains – Schuylkill County’s only steampowered Santa trains in 2021 – and the Reading & Northern Railroad provides the coaches. Tickets cost $17 for every person 12 years old and up and $9 for every child 3-11; those under 3 ride free. Every rider of every age requires a ticket. Families and anyone else wishing to ride may order their tickets by sending a check, made out to Project 113, to Project 113 Santa Train, 113 East Sunbury Street, Minersville PA 17954. Trace the outside border of the Christmas trees with the melted candy, then fill inside the borders, using a toothpick to move the melted candy around. Freeze to harden, about 5 minutes, and set aside at room temperature. 9. Pour 3/4 cup of the lemon-lime soda into a small saucepan, sprinkle over the gelatin and whisk to combine. about 5 minutes. 10. Add the granulated sugar to the gelatin mixture and heat over medium-low heat, whisking occasionally, just until the gelatin and sugar dissolve, about 5 minutes. 11. Pour the gelatin mixture into a large liquid measuring cup and stir in the remaining 2 cups lemon-lime soda. Use a spoon to scoop away any bubbles at the surface. Let sit at room temperature until the gelatin just begins to thicken and is the consistency of thin fruit jelly, about 20 minutes. Add the silver glitter and stir with a spoon. Scoop away any bubbles or lumped up sprinkles at the surface. 12. Pour the mixture into the cavities of a 5-cavity silicone half-sphere mold with 4-ounce cavities and scoop away any bubbles at the surface. Refrigerate until the gelatin has thickened and is slightly set on top but still very wobbly, 6 to 8 minutes. 13. Push a tree straight down into the center of each cavity and hold for a few seconds to allow the gelatin to split and fill back up around the tree.

Refrigerate until completely set, at least 6 hours and up to overnight. 14. To assemble: Fill a 9-by-13inch glass dish with warm water. Set the half-sphere mold into the water and let sit until the gelatin spheres have loosened from the mold, about 5 minutes. Lift the mold from the water and invert onto a baking sheet. Set aside in the refrigerator. 15. Carefully unmold the cheesecakes from the mold. Put the white nonpareils in a small bowl. Carefully dip the top of each cheesecake into the white nonpareils and transfer to a serving platter. Add a gelatin snow globe on top of each cheesecake.

INGREDIENTS • 1 pound almond flour • 1 1/2 pounds confectioners' sugar, plus more for dusting • 3 large egg whites • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract • Nonstick baking spray • Finely ground semolina, for dusting • 3 tablespoons meringue powder • Food coloring, optional

DIRECTIONS 1. Arrange a rack in the lower third of the oven and preheat to 300 degrees F. 2. Add the almond flour and 1 pound of the confectioners' sugar to a food processor. Pulse about 10 times to combine. Add the egg whites and vanilla extract. Run the processor for about 20 seconds until the dough forms into a ball; it will be slightly sticky. Remove the dough from the food processor and form it into a disc. Tightly cover with plastic wrap and let it rest at room temperature for 20 minutes. 3. Spray the kransekake molds with nonstick spray and sprinkle with semolina, tapping off any excess. 4. Wake Up The Echoes: Frank Leahy and Leon Hart

Frank Leahy was born on August 27, 1908 in O’Neill, Nebraska and died June 21, 1973 in Portland, Oregon. He played tackle for his idol, Knute Rockne on Notre Dame teams by Rev. Connell McHugh in 1928, 1929, and 1930. The 1929 and 1930 teams were National Champions. After graduation, Frank Leahy became a line coach for Georgetown in 1931 and for Michigan State in 1932. From 1933 through 1938, Leahy was line coach for the excellent Jim Crowley Fordham teams. Their line was called the Blocks of Granite. The great Packer Coach, Vince Lombardi was a guard on the 1935 and 1936 Fordham teams. After being a successful line coach at Fordham, Leahy became the head coach of Boston College for the 1939 and 1940 seasons, guiding them to a 20-2 record. In 1940, Boston College defeated Tennessee 19-13 in the Sugar Bowl. In those years the National Champion was selected before the Bowl Games and Tennessee was selected, but Boston College was viewed as National Champion since it went undefeated and beat Tennessee 19-13 in the Sugar Bowl. Frank Leahy began coaching Notre Dame in 1941 and mentored the team in 1942 and 1943. When World War II escalated, Notre Dame, like many colleges suspended their Football Program. His career record at Notre Dame was 87-11-9, the second best percentage behind Knute Rockne. Overall he was 107-13-9. In 1970 Leahy was selected to the College Hall of Fame as a coach. Frank Leahy was Notre Dame’s Athletic Director from 1947 to 1949, but he gave that position up to concentrate on football. “Moose” Krause, the basketball coach succeeded him. Frank Leahy resigned as Football Coach of Notre Dame after the 1953 season for health reasons. He did serve as the General Manager of the L.A.Chargers in 1960, the inaugural year of the AFL. Leahy coached Notre Dame to National Championships

in 1943, 1946, 1947 and 1949. He had 6 undefeated seasons. His 1953 team was selected as number one by several polls. A controversial 114-14 tie with Iowa cost them the consensus National Championship. Notre Dame scored at the end of the first half and near the end of the game to earn the tie. Both times Notre Dame was out of time outs and both times a player faked an injury to stop the clock. Some writers referred to them as the “Fainting Irish”. Four Heisman Trophy winners played for Frank Leahy: Angelo Bertelli and Johnny Lujack, both quarterbacks, Leon Hart who excelled at offensive and defensive end and Johnny Lattner who was a halfback and punter for Leahy’s last team. In addition, Leahy also recruited another Heisman Trophy winner and NFL star, Paul Hornung. I can remember at the age of 7 watching the Highlights of Notre Dame’s 1953 team games on Sunday nights. I looked forward to each Sunday evening. I can, after all these years remember the starting backfield of this 9-0-1 team: quarterback Ralph Guglielmi, halfbacks Johnny Lattner and Joe Heap and fullback Neil Worden. The entire backfield made the NFL but none became stars. Leon Hart was born on November 2, 1928 and died September 24, 2002 in South Bend a little over a week after attending the Notre Dame/Michigan game of a perforated ulcer. Hart also had bypass surgery and cancer

earlier in his life. Leon Hart is a great example of a winning player. He played football at Turtle Creek High School, a short distance from Pittsburgh. Hart’s team went undefeated in all his high school years. During his years at Notre Dame, 1946 through 1949, Hart’s team went 36-0-2. They won 3 National Championships. In 1949, Leon Hart won both the Heisman and Maxwell Trophies. Hart was the last lineman to win the Heisman. He is only one of four players to win a Heisman Trophy, a National Championship and be the 1st pick of the NFL draft. At Notre Dame., Hart played both offensive and defensive end from 1946 through 1949 under “The Master” Frank Leahy. Leon Hart was a first team All-American in 1947, 1948 and 1949. He began playing for Notre Dame as a 17 year old in 1946. Hart was captain of the 1949 National Championship team that went 10-0 and outscored opponents 360-86. In 1949 Leon Hart was the Associated Press Athlete of the Year with 104 points outdistancing Jackie Robinson with 55 points. Hart was an excellent student and graduated in 1950 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. The Detroit Lions selected Hart as the Number 1 pick in the 1950 NFL Draft. He signed a 3-year contract for around $20,000 a year, big money for that time. Hart played his entire career for the Lions, 1950-1957. While he did not play on undefeated teams, he did play in the Golden Era of Detroit football. The Lions won the NFL in 1952, 1953 and 1957 with Bobby Layne at quarterback. Hart played 92 games for the Lions at both offensive and defensive end and a fullback. Leon Hart gained 3,111 yards from scrimmage and 2,499 passing yards with 32 career touchdowns. In 1950, Hart married his high school

Panorama Community Magazine girlfriend, Lois, in St. Coleman’s Roman Catholic Church. The couple remained married until his wife’s death in 1998. Leon and Lois had six children. Their son, Kevin played end on the 1977 National Championship Notre Dame team. Sports Illustrated ranked the 4 year stretch of Notre Dame’s Football Team from 1946 through 1949 as the second best dynasty of any sport in the 20th Century, trailing only the Boston Celtic Teams from 1957 to 1969. That dynasty won 11 NBA titles. Sports Illustrated also ranked Leon Hart among the 50 greatest athletes from Pennsylvania. When Leon Hart was the Heisman Trophy winner in 1949, the 2nd and 3rd players in the voting were future NFL stars: Charlie “Choo Choo” Justice and SMU’s Doak Walker who became a teammate of Hart for the Detroit Lions. Frank Leahy used to say to Hart, “Leon don’t get hurt because you gotta play

anyway.” Hart, in addition to being a fine pass catcher, was also a great blocker on offense and an excellent pass rusher on defense. Leon Hart was a strong believer in two way players even in his later years. Hart was a successful businessman after retiring from football. He ran his own business which manufactured parts for trucks. Leon Hart remained loyal to Notre Dame throughout his life and was active in the school’s affairs. He also worked very hard to see that NFL players from 1959 and earlier received proper pensions. Leon Hart is in the College Football Hall of Fame and is still regarded as one of the greatest ends in the

history of college football. Hart appears on Bowman Football cards from 1950 through 1955 and on Topps Cards in 1956 and 1957. The Bowman cards from 1950 to 1953 run $20 to $50 depending on condition. The 1954 and 1955 Bowman cards and the 1956 and 1957 Topps cards cost approximately $10 to $15 in nice condition. The rare and most expensive card of Hart costs upward of $300 and was manufactured by Leaf in 1948. Frank Leahy cards appear in Notre Dame produced sets and in Trading Cards manufactured by the Collegiate Collection Inc. out of Louisville, Kentucky.

What, No Spare Tire? Its hidden far away in the recesses of the trunk. Out of sight out of mind. Not needed until you hear the dreaded low tire alarm and the strange icon appears on the dash. Flat tire, no problem. I can put the spare tire on and be on the road in no time. Open the truck and to your surprise there is nothing but a can of fix a flat, the stuff you used to fix your bicycle tires when you were a kid. Or maybe a tire inflator kit. Wow, a new car without a spare! Where did it go? Did they forget to put it in your trunk? Not too long ago a spare tire used to be standard equipment in cars and trucks. The new car market is changing in ways that may leave some drivers stuck on the side of the road. Automakers have become so focused solely on fuel economy requirements, trunk space and safety concerns that they have shifted toward smaller temporary tires or in many cases, no spare at all. Full size spares are the same size as the other tires on the vehicle and usually match

the others. But there has been a 49 percent decrease since 2007 of vehicles that still provide a full time spare. Temporary spares, often called “donut tires” can be found in 52 percent of 2014 plus model year cars. But these tires are designed to be used on a temporary basis because they are smaller and are not made for speeds over 55 miles per hour. “Run flat tires” normally require no spare at all. These tires have reinforced sidewalls that give them the strength to operate with little or no air at all. They are designed to go up to 50 miles at speeds under 50 mph in order to make it to a repair station. These tires give the motorist the advantage of not having to stop on the side of the road to change it which can lead to a dangerous situation. But they are not immune to blowouts from hitting potholes which usually litter our area. Some new car manufactures are not including any type of tire at all. 7 Indoor Air Quality Myths - Debunked (BPT) - Air quality has become a hot topic. COVID-19 heightened our awareness of all of our surroundings - especially the air we breathe. Because people spend 90% of their time indoors, especially during colder winter months, sorting fact from fiction about indoor air quality is crucial. Trane Technologies, a global climate innovator, is helping debunk common myths about indoor air quality and offering tips to improve the air you breathe: Myth 1: Outside air is always better. Debunked: Not always. It's healthy to get a dose of fresh air, but sometimes when you bring in outdoor air you can invite allergens, smog and humidity into your home. Myth 4: Vaccinated people don't need to worry about the air quality. Debunked: Vaccination is a protection against specific viruses, but not all. Without proper ventilation, filtration and humidity control, there is a higher risk of contaminants circulating indoors and conditions that can encourage exposure to airborne viruses. Gases, particulate matter and other pollutants can also affect your health, especially if you have asthma or allergies. Myth 5: You can't see air quality so you can't feel confident about the air you breathe. Debunked: Sophisticated sensors and technologies are available that help you know and control air quality. According to Jason Bingham, "The first step is awareness and knowing the air quality within a home or building. Debunked: Humidity plays a big part in air quality and comfort: too high or too low can cause health problems, discomfort, mildew and unhygienic air. Indoor spaces that are the right temperature but don't have adequate ventilation can contain high concentrations of carbon dioxide, which can lead to drowsiness and headaches. Myth 7: Thermal comfort (how we feel) has nothing to do with air quality. Debunked: Thermal comfort is based on temperature and humidity, and humidity plays a significant role in air quality. For example, airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is found to be more transmissible in dry air. As a result, researchers recommend relative humidity of 40% to 60%. Tire pressure monitoring systems also provide a sense of security because the system warns you of a tire pressure problem. But according to a 2013 survey, one in seven cars bought today come without a spare tire. For drivers without a spare what happens if you experience a full blowout or the tire becomes shredded and you are on the side of the road out of

Use the internet and find out which manufactures cannot supply a simple spare tire when you purchase a brand-new vehicle. It may change your choice in what brand of car to buy. An Oral Health Holiday Carol

A recent survey found that 81% of American adults wish they had taken better care of their natural teeth. More than half wish their parent(s) had instilled better oral hygiene habits when they were younger, and 43% admit that tooth pain or oral health issues negatively affects their productivity or ability to focus. Oral health involves more than just keeping those pearly whites looking their best. Maintaining good oral health could be an important factor in living your life to the fullest. Poor dental health can lead to overall health issues and can negatively impact mood, confidence, ability to carry out daily tasks, your social life and your love life. In fact, more than a quarter of Americans feel others would find them more attractive and about 1 in 6 feel they would have a more active dating life if they took better care of their teeth. If you continue down the path of lax oral hygiene, things are not looking good for safely unmasking and kissing that special someone under the mistletoe this holiday season. Many also believe that, if they were to take better care of their teeth, their self-esteem would improve, and they would have more money due to needing fewer dental exams or procedures. (Ebenezer would like the sound of that!) 1 in 5 Americans report that increased levels of stress during the pandemic have manifested into teeth grinding (bruxism) or brushing their teeth too hard. And in the era of COVID-19, the AAE is closely monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure the health of patients, families, endodontists, and dental staff and teams. It is safe to visit your oral care provider during the pandemic, and there's a Patient Toolkit available with more information about those measures. Vaccines Work

For those who still refuse to get the Covid vaccine, consider this: you may not be alive today if enough people like you refused the smallpox and polio vaccines. Consider too that as of this writing 70% of Americans have received at least one Covid vaccine and are doing their best to protect themselves and others from serious disease. To date 750,000 Americans have died from Covid. Oh, and speaking of vaccines, consider last month’s medical headline: “Cervical Cancer Cases Dropped by Almost 90% Thanks to HPV Vaccine, Real-World Data Show”. HPV stands for human papilloma virus, the virus that is sexually transmitted and causes genital warts. HPV also causes cervical cancer. So, preventing HPV also prevents cervical cancer (and

probably many oral cancers as well). Back to Covid, from a touching article in the Washington Post entitled Covid-19 killed my brother and sister a week apart. It didn’t have to happen: “When the call came that my brother and sister were both in the hospital, I said, “Covid.” It was a statement, not a question. I knew. Despite our begging and cajoling, they had both refused the vaccines. I know they could have been with us longer had they been vaccinated. My heart is doubly broken.” And this article: “A North Dakota GOP lawmaker helped organize an anti-vaccine rally. Then he got covid and couldn’t attend.”. To quote from the article: “The Minot lawmaker is the latest public figure who railed against mask or vaccine mandates to test positive for the virus. At least four talk-radio hosts who shared anti-vaccine and anti-mask sentiments died of the virus in August.” And yes, the vaccines are not 100% effective. Those vaccinated can still get sick from Covid. But here’s one more thing to consider: the unvaccinated now account for 95% of the Covid deaths in the US. Enough said.

Site Preparation Started for Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton A new state-of-the-art cancer center is coming to Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)– Hazleton in 2023, bringing more leadingedge cancer care services to the local community. Demolition has begun on the building that formerly housed the Hazleton General Hospital School of Nursing, and an official groundbreaking will take place later this year or early next year. When completed, the new cancer center will have three floors and include physician practices, an infusion center and radiation oncology services. Currently, infusion services are provided at an off-site medical office, and patients needing radiation treatment must travel to other locations. “The need is very clear, and this expansion will allow our patients to receive many of their treatments in a centralized location,” says Terrence Purcell, President, Lehigh Valley Health

Network (LVHN) Northwest Region. “Our community will benefit greatly from this advanced cancer facility, and we are very proud to build upon and enhance the current cancer services we offer.” The new cancer center will be part of Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, which offers state-of-the-art cancer treatments and clinical trials to individuals within their own community. The Cancer Institute is also one of only three cancer centers in the country participating in the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Cancer Alliance, which provides patients with additional lifesaving care options close to home.
