GRDS-755-OL Typography Studio II Professor Merrick Henry Summer 2011
Out of all the words I thought of, I believe that the idea of a balloon flying away is the one that has more potential. At first, I was searching for a word that was an action verb, but it was too obvious and expected. Brainstorming lead to the concept of a balloon being inflated, deflated, and flying away when it was completely inflated. Animating my idea will definitely be a challenge for me.
1. The animation will start with an empty keyframe, in order to create the effect of expansion since the beginning. 2. The balloon made up from letters, will be blown from the left side of the animation.
1.
2.
3. The balloon will keep on growing, the same way it would if someone blows up a balloon. 4. 7KH EDOORRQ ZLOO GHテ.WH D little bit, mimicking the way D EDOORRQ GHテ.WHV ZKHQ D person blows up one.

5. 7KH EDOORRQ LQÁDWHV D OLWWOH bit more. 6. 7KH EDOORRQ GHÁDWHV RQH more time. 7. 7KH EDOORRQ LQÁDWHV DQG this is the last stage of the balloon, being “fully blown”.

8. The balloon follows a wind path until it disappears from the screen, through the right side of the animation. A string (made up from letters) will be attached to the balloon.
THANK YOU for your time and your suggestions, but a word popped out of my mind while working on the “balloon concept. From this point on, I decided to change my word with the approval of several of my peers and of course, the Professor.
I found the following images as i was researching and looking for inspiration:
* Unfortunately, results in Flash CS5 were not effective during the attempt of animating it. I decided once more, and with the suggestions of several peers, to change the storyboards.
1. Letters appear one by one on the screen, until completing the word “BALANCE”. 2. 7KH ÀUVW OHWWHU RI WKH ZRUG is blown up, creating unbalace on the word. 3. The last letter of the word is blown up in order to create balance on the word. 1.
2.
3.
4.
4. Letters on the word continue to attempt to try to balance the word in any way.
5. Last letters of the word are blown up, creating so much weight, that the letters fall and appear back on the screen again. 6. Once again, letters attempt to balance the word.
5.
6.
7. The middle letter of the word is blown up, creating balance and working as a pendulum or scale. 8. Letter A is blown up, creating an effect of pendulum, while the rest of the letters try to balance each other until they come to a point that is balanced on both sides, thanks to the pendulum.

Typeface chosen for animation: HELVETICA NEUE: Regular ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ Why? So far, it is the most balanced typeface in my opinion. It is widely used, but effective for this animation that intends to demonstrate the word “balance. I did not choose a serif font because visually, serifs could create a sense of unbalance because of their idividual weight.
