OVERVIEW The Open University Program (concurrent enrollment), administered by UCSB Extension, is the gateway to classes at UC Santa Barbara. Open University allows qualified students to take advantage of undergraduate and graduate courses at UCSB without formal admission to the university. Students experience the rewards of learning from distinguished faculty, attend classes with matriculated students, pay for courses on a per unit basis, and earn transferable units.
BENEFITS Open University is an ideal program if students wish to: Finish a degree Investigate new courses of study before enrolling in a degree program Earn units for transfer to another university Stay ahead of new developments in a particular subject area Explore a new field or enhance a current one Take courses for personal enrichment.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS Open University is offered on a space-available basis; all UCSB matriculated students must be accommodated before Open University students will be admitted. Permission from the instructor is required for all courses. Certain courses require additional permission from a teaching assistant and/or the department chair. Admittance to UCSB regular session courses, discussion sections, or labs is not guaranteed, and the instructor’s (or Department Chair’s) decision is final. Open University students must meet all course prerequisites listed in the UCSB General Catalog at my.sa.ucsb.edu/Catalog/Current/Index.aspx and the UCSB Schedule of Classes at my.sa.ucsb.edu/public/curriculum/coursesearch.aspx and should be prepared to provide evidence to the instructor or department that prerequisites have been satisfied. Note: Class attendance, participation in discussion sections, completion of assignments and exams, grading options, and deadlines are the same for Open University students as for matriculated students.
