THE PLACE PASEO DE GRACIA, 96 BARCELONA The chosen stage for the latest Massimo Dutti fashion show is one of its most emblematic flagship stores: Paseo de Gracia, 96— right in the heart of Barcelona. The store, located in a building that is a tribute to Catalan Modernism, was restored to its former splendour thanks to the brand’s renovation and heritage recovery works. The Massimo Dutti flagship store is the epitome of the cuttingedge design associated with the brand’s essence and evolution over the last decade. Its 2,000 m2 features the WOMEN’S, MEN’S, BOYS’ & GIRLS’ and PERSONAL TAILORING collections, as well as the LIMITED EDITION collections, all presented under a new boutique concept that includes the latest technological advances. All of the collections are showcased in an impressive interior where innovative architectural and decorative elements are combined with the original features of the building. One of the rooms on the main floor houses the Limited Edition collections. As the name implies, this includes exclusive pieces only available in certain stores, such as this one.

ASUNCIÓN BASTIDA THE GOLDEN AGE OF HAUTE COUTURE Around the 1950s, the main floor was occupied by the haute couture label Asunción Bastida, recognised as one of the so-called Big Five, along with Pedro Rodríguez, Manuel Pertegaz, Santa Eulalia and El Dique Flotante; all of them were creators of the Haute Couture Cooperative, responsible for re-expanding the fashion sector, something that was needed during the post-war years. The already-existing stairwell from before the renovation work was modified to incorporate a visible elevator that stops before the upper coffered Artesonado ceiling. 86

RAMÓN CASAS I CARBÓ A CUTTING-EDGE ARTIST A painter, draftsman and poster designer linked to impressionism who promoted Catalan modernism; Ramón Casas was an outstanding portrait painter who, in terms of aesthetics, looked to Paris. He lived there for several years until, on his return, he settled into his house— a studio he had commissioned Antoni Rovira i Rabassa to build in Barcelona at Paseo de Gracia 96, the nexus of modernity in the city.

The new Massimo Dutti store is in line with a new concept of commercial space where everything consolidates the identity and lifestyle of the brand, transmitting values such as quality and exclusivity, values inherent in all its collections. On the main floor, the lounge of the old Carbó House, which is presided over by the old fireplace, exhibits the various Massimo Dutti accessory collections.

INTERIOR GARDEN At the end of the store is the beautiful interior courtyard, restored to its former splendour. The prestigious British landscapers Harry and David Rich were responsible for a haute couture project that was completely in synch with both the historical characteristics of the building itself, as well as the soil’s geological conditions to ensure that all selected species thrive.

VINÇON ICON OF MODERNITY AND DESIGN

REGALOS HUGO VINÇON

In 1941 Enrique Levi and Hugo Vinçon chose the ground floor of the building for the opening of the first Regalos Hugo Vinçon gift shop. A year later the Amat family joined the project which, under the name of Vinçon, would set the standards of modernity in Barcelona until it closed in 2015. During this period, some original decor elements of the building were preserved, such as the magnificent fireplace, an important part of the home, and the impressive interior patio; today, they are still present in Massimo Dutti’s flagship store. 87

Massimo Dutti turns the art of illustration into a creative experience coinciding with its latest fashion show at the label’s emblematic flagship store on Barcelona’s Paseo de Gracia. Hoping to impress guests and customers, the label takes us back to the different universes of the particular cosmos through a series of original works that bear the stamp of the renowned illustrator Montserrat Salvat.

The store occupies a building that serves as a reference for 19th century Catalan Modernism.

Every time I need to make professional decisions I try to tap into my intuition, and put heart and mind in the equation. Lately i only do what “feels right”. I am paving my own road with what is meaningful to me. Of course some times I’m tired so I may not be drawn to do something, but i try to take the time to decide if it’s important for me to make that extra effort. Other than that, managing it all for me goes through a mix of proper organisation and letting the stars align themselves like they are meant it. Plan but let things also happen. I’m extremely grateful to my team for making it all possible and my husband above all for seeing me and supporting me in my work.

What is your earliest memory in terms of fashion?

My mother designing and producing a clothing and shoe line when we were living in Cairo. Her costumers still wear the items today, and i have inherited some very special items.

How do you celebrate your uniqueness?

I try to stay true to my instincts, to hear my own voice first without trying to conform. And that reflects in everything from the choices i make in my life to my fashion choices.

“Think timeless, over trends” could be one of your motto?

Of course! I never really followed trends. It was more what i was personally into, as my style has evolved over the years. But I always choose quality first and things that seem like they can stay with me for a long time.

What would you like to change about the current state of fashion? Radical change in the sustainability of materials used and the fairness of production chain. A change in the message of sales towards including and more responsible and aware consumption. The immediate abandon of single use plastic. More dept in the choices of the role models who are supposed to inspire the world. themselves ! and also the fact that we are already after only a few years entered the public school in Italy!

This year we are conducting our first in dept monitoring and evaluation studies to be able to extrapolate some more precise data on the results. But so far to me success is when parents tell us how much evolution they are seeing in their kids who come home and want to share what they learned , when the kids in Egypt and in Italy so excitedly tell me that they want more Funtasia in their life , that this project made them feel for empathic, and more confident, that they see the results themselves ! and also the fact that we are already after only a few years entered the public school in Italy!

How do you evaluate the success of Funtasia’s project?

From where does your desire to create a charitable foundation?

The charitable foundation is now turning into a social enterprise because it seems that innovative education which focuses on creating safe spaces where individuals are encouraged to express and explore their personal is very much in demand in the world, from Egypt to the USA The goal of our educational programmes is to develop life skills such as conflict management , active listening , taking initiative, and the result is that you effectively contrast bullying, school drop out rates and use of violence. We benefit those who can’t afford through our non profit but more and more schools (we are in talks with someone in Spain) are hiring us to train their teachers and educators and support them to implement Funtasia educational programmes both in morning , traditional classrooms, and in after school centres. This year we were called to go to Mexico and Morocco and we are very excited about this!

As my personal life my hope is to continue this work of healing I’m doing. 246


I want to see Funtasia becoming an approach used around the world much like , and alongside Montessori. The long term financial sustainability for Funtasia is also something very important to me, and I work on how this project that fuel itself further to the more old fashioned ways of raising money for development. Professionally I would say that’s the primary thing for me. As my personal life my hope is to continue this work of healing I’m doing , to get rid of all the behavioural patterns I have developed as a survival mode, so that I can live in as much harmony and peace as I can, with the effect that this has also on the people I share a bit of my path with. I want to see my children thrive. And I wish to see the world continue to take action and make the difference we want.

What are your hopes and dreams for the future?

Do you have any other philanthropic projects?

Funtasia is my full time job, but I work with Tania Fares in the USA for the USA Fashion Trust. She developed this membership programme to support USA fashion designers.

Is there any message that you wish to instill in new generations?

What I want more than anything is to create opportunities for human connection and self expression, I want to contribute in strengthening the level of self awareness and awareness of the world in youth.
