Easy inking Follow our simple steps to create punny greetings perfect for all the family

Blend it

Creating inked backgrounds is a useful technique for many crafting projects. From a smooth blending of similar colours to a striped plaid effect, putting ink to paper gives exciting options. Adding ink straight to card may seem tricky initially, but there are different ways that can make it easier, and there’s also a variety of craft tools that can help you create the look you want.

a good starting point. Begin by inking onto scrap paper next to the area you want to add colour to and move the tool in a circular motion towards the card.

Mix and repeat

When you join two colours together, start with a small amount of ink and build up gradually. Add a lighter colour overlapping the inked area to help the colours mix

Round and round

The most inexpensive tool you can try is a makeup sponge. Creating a shape with soft edges is the best way to avoid lines when blending, so look for a curved sponge. Applying less ink with gentle but constant circular pressure is

Bunny love

1

Blend yellow, orange and pink ink in a circular motion onto an 11cm x 13.5cm panel of card. Overlap each colour with the previous shade, then stamp the bunnies onto white card, colour in with blue pens and cut out. Adhere the bunnies to a 1cm thick piece of brown card and pierce a hole in both sides. Thread twine through each hole and secure on the reverse. Add to the inked panel with 3D foam pads and secure the twine to the back of the panel. Stamp a ‘Some bunny loves you’ sentiment in black ink onto a small piece of white card and attach to the panel using more foam pads. Trim some curved pieces of green patterned paper to create hills and layer onto the front of the panel. Glue the entire panel to a 12cm x 14.5cm blank.

Cupcake

POM-POMS

I

Give your crafts cupboard a rest and raid the kitchen instead!

n the eyes of a crafter, nothing is sacred and nothing is safe. We see the potential in everything, and we’re always on the lookout for unusual items we can adopt into our stash. Cupcake cases tick all the right boxes because they’re available in great colours and patterns, easy to work with and, best of all, they’re cheap. Corinne Bradd has made flowers using polka dot and swirl patterned liners, then used them to create giant pom-poms perfect for hanging at a tea party or to simply brighten up a room. You almost certainly have a stack of paper cases in your pantry right now, so get crafting!

Cake and craft

1

Bend 5cm of wire into a hoop, then press the ends into a polystyrene ball. Thread a 60cm length of twine through the hoop, tie off, then push the hoop in with the knot underneath. Use a knitting needle to make 1cm deep holes over the entire surface of the sphere, leaving 1.5cm between each.

2

3

Turn a red cupcake case inside out, then lightly press in half. Pinch the centre and gather up the paper with a few loose folds. Twist the centre of the liner into a stalk, apply a dab of tacky glue and gently slot the flower into a hole in the polystyrene. Repeat with pink, blue and green paper cases until half the surface is covered. Leave the glue to dry completely, then fill in the rest.
