MUM
MOTHER I LOVE YOU 1 Cut scallops across the top of a 9.5cm x 12cm piece of yellow striped paper. Adhere to the top of a white top-fold 12cm square blank. Cover the remainder with green dotty paper. 2 For the mummy bird, punch one 1”, one 2” and three 5/8” circles from patterned papers. Cut each circle in half. Stick the three smaller halves in a fan to the right side of the largest half and the remaining one to the centre. Snip a small triangle from yellow paper and attach to the left side. 3 Repeat to make a smaller bird, except with the tail on the left. Instead of a triangle, cut a small trapezium from yellow paper, then trim a triangle from its base to make an open beak shape. Fix on the right of the body.
32 papercraftermagazine.co.uk
4 Attach the birds to the yellow part of the blank and doodle in legs, head curls, musical notes and bees with a black fine liner. Print a sentiment onto white card, trim into a banner and attach centrally to the green dotty section. Finish with a few gems.
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY 1 To make a shaped top-fold blank, die cut two of the largest Labels One shapes. Score a line 1cm in along one side of one label. Line up and attach to the other, making sure you only apply adhesive within the scored edge. 2 Create and print a sentiment onto white card. Cut with the largest die, trim to 2.5cm deep and attach to the bottom of the blank on the unscored side. Create another label from orange dotty paper, trim and attach to the top of the blank.
Create and print out a page of assorted sentiments so you always have one to hand
3 Stamp a flourish heart onto white card in orange ink. Cut out, matt onto black card and attach to the orange section. Wrap and tie black twine around the blank above the sentiment and add a black gem to the heart.

f you're looking for something a little different to do with all your paper and card, this make by Katie Skilton is just the thing. Such a pretty birdhouse is sure to impress and, with our handy template, is much easier to make than you might think. Embellish with gorgeous papers, kitsch mini bunting and cut-out birds and butterflies. You can hang this make on the wall, sit it on a shelf or give it as a stunning present.
“My birdhouse is 18cm x 28cm, but you can make one in any size simply by making the template bigger or smaller. You could make a stunning mobile out of lots of tiny ones” KATIE SKILTON, DESIGNER
You will need
Craft essentials (see p92) Online template from papercraftermagazine.co.uk
Die: fence Punches: bird, scallop-edged border Distress ink: brown Stickers: heart, flower Paper butterflies Vellum Lolly stick Twine 1 Using the template provided, cut all the pieces from strong cardstock. Piece together the house and roof using double-sided tape. Add vellum to the two cut-out windows. Cover each section of the house with patterned paper. Cut the window edges from coloured cardstock and adhere. 2 Attach the roof to the house and cover with patterned paper. Cut two 3cm x 17cm strips of co-ordinating paper and punch along one edge to create a scalloped border. Attach these to the edge of the roof. 3 Fix a section of twine across the birdhouse, underneath the top window. Cut small triangles and rectangles from patterned card and stick on the twine as bunting, adding heart stickers to finish. 4 Die cut the fence sections, ink the edges and adhere to the base of the house. Add some flower stickers. Punch out a bird shape and adhere to the side of the lower window.
Top tip
5 Distress a lolly stick and attach a sentiment to the top. Stick this behind the fence. Decorate the roof with sticker elements and butterflies.
USE EXTRA-STRONG DOUBLE-SIDED TAPE TO STICK THE BIRDHOUSE TOGETHER SECURELY

GREETING Boost your quilling confidence by mastering this 3D flower by Corinne Bradd
You will need
Craft essentials (see p92)
Quilling papers:
NICE F NEWBIOR ES
5mm, pastel
Quilling tool Alphabet stamps 1 Create the centre peg of the flower by tightly winding a 5mm yellow strip around a quilling tool, followed by a strip of lemon. Stick the end down and slide the shape off the tool. Attach to a scallop-edged 8cm circle of yellow paper, slightly off centre. 2 Trim a 5mm dark pink strip in half and wind loosely around the tool. Allow the coil to open out to 1cm in diameter before glueing together. Pinch one end to form a petal shape. Make three more dark pink petals and four light pink ones, then adhere around the centre peg as shown. 3 Cut three short pieces of green strip and loosely coil the ends in opposite directions to form swirls. Glue between the petals. Create eight leaf shapes from green paper, using the same method as for the petals and attach alongside the swirls. 4 Create six tiny flower buds and three leaf buds by winding quarter sections of pink and green strips tightly around the quilling tool, glueing down the ends before sliding off. Fix these around the swirls. 5 Mount the decorated circle onto a 8.5cm pink scallop-edged paper disc, then centrally onto a 10.5cm cream card blank. Use alphabet stamps to create a sentiment on a small piece of rectangular card. Punch a hole in the end and thread through embroidery cotton, securing above the flower.

Finding
the right words How to make your sentiments as extraordinary as your creations ow that you’ve designed a gorgeous greeting, it’s time to make every word count — although for some of us this doesn’t always come naturally. There are so many ways to make your cards more personal, but nothing is quite as effective as a well-worded sentiment. Depending on the recipient and occasion, try these handy tips to help you say it best.
N
Words by Samantha Lewis
LAUGHTER’S THE BEST MEDICINE Humour is a great way to put a smile on a loved one’s face and if you know what makes them tickle, your card is sure to be a big hit! Most people enjoy laughing at themselves but to avoid causing offence, make sure you are harmless and tasteful with what you mention. If you’re a little stuck, reminisce about a funny time you shared — the more embarrassing the better!
CHANNEL YOUR INNER SHAKESPEARE We’re not all poets, but heartfelt greetings are the ideal keepsake gift, so it’s important to ensure they’re as touching and memorable as possible. Don’t be afraid of sounding cheesy! The beauty of a slushy gesture is that you can take someone special right back to a key moment you spent together, simply with a few thoughtful lines. This is also a great opportunity to say thanks for all the little things they do for you.
A SHOULDER TO CRY ON This is never an easy card to write, but it’s the perfect chance to let friends and family know that they are in your thoughts. When sharing your condolences, sometimes less is more, as every loss is specific and bad news affects everyone differently. A simple ‘I’m here for you’ can really show you care.
LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE There’s nothing better than when someone close makes you unbelievably proud. Whether your greeting is to celebrate a graduation, job promotion or the birth of a new baby, a congrats is definitely in order. We all love to be recognised for our accomplishments, so have fun with your words, express your happiness and refer to a bright future — a bottle of champagne wouldn’t go a miss either!

E
mily McDowell
is the owner of a greeting and gift company based in Los Angeles. Her business is best known for its fantastic selection of unique and witty cards, so we caught up with Emily for a quick chat about writing successful sentiments. Visit her store at emilymcdowell.com
“This is one of my favourite cards that we sell because I feel it’s a surprising and original take on the concept of modern love and companionship”
IS A SENTIMENT JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE DESIGN? Definitely. I usually write first, then I choose a design direction that will best support or enhance the message. I think the main reason people pick up my cards is that they connect with what I say. If you get it right, your customers feel like they’ve found something that was custom-made just for their relationship, and I think it’s a little more difficult to craft that kind of connection through design. WHAT INSPIRES YOUR CHOICE OF WORDS? For me, I read articles and consider my own and my friend’s relationships to uncover a true insight into emotions and situations that are universally true and relatable to many couples. Then I try to express those feelings in new ways that haven’t been done before.
EM ILY HAS A CARD FOR EVERY OCCASION!
“The nicest greeting message I received was from my daughter a few years ago. It read: ‘Happy Birthday mum. Thanks for all you do for me, especially for always having faith in me, even when I didn’t have faith in myself’. It was really touching” SHELIA WRIGHT, PAPERCRAFTER READER
HOW DO YOU AND YOUR TEAM COME UP WITH YOUR UNIQUE IDEAS? I worked as a creative in advertising for ten years before starting my company, so I have a lot of practice in coming up with ideas. Mostly, I steal time to write and draw; I usually come up with a ton of bad ideas for every good one. My subconscious is constantly working on new things and I have lots of sketchbooks strewn about my house at all times, just in case! WHAT ARE THE MOST IMPORTANT FACTORS OF SENTIMENT WRITING? Write what’s true to you and don’t give up too easily! It can sometimes take a lot of writing to get where you want. Always try to put your own spin on ideas for a really personal touch.
